questions for Nevil on afghani and kush lines (the other grail!)

Maple Leaf was not related to Northern Lights and didn't cross well with pure NL. Too much Indica. Hybrids of both strains dis cross well when they contained more sativa.
ML loves Skunk1. My nose and intuition tells me that these two are distantly related.

Jim Ortega is around and can speak for himself if he chooses. I get the feeling that he has spoken before and few listened.

The Afghan/hash plant is probably HPxNL1. Not a great yielder but gee it was strong.

and that was my exact recall; hp x nl, but i note you called it an nl#1. i have read various histories of the nl line, some of it confusing other than for those looking today simply to grow the plant out, nl#5 is the quest. but today nl#1 is considered to be ortega? peace-biteme

I gave Ortega HPxNL1 and HP.1xG13.
Legend has it that he's done wonders with it for 20+ years.
Seeds from these lines are being planted as we speak (thanks Jim). I'll give you a report in due course.

Hi Neville, you say NL and ML don't cross well, is the NL5 X Afghan MNS offers related to the AfgT or is that Affy different than the one used for the afghan skunk?

Out of the available G13 crosses, med man, NL5 X Afghan, NL5 Skunk and Ortega which do you feel will provide the most potent Indica meds and which do you feel is the highest quality (for an indica dom) in terms of recreational use and aromatics?

Also can you shed any light on the HP13 cutting?

Sorry to bombard you with questions!

Im gonna help field this one, and dont You Guys go repeat me on the Tom Hill forum.... Ok?
I grew it and absolutely dislike it. I wasted space on an indoor grow which I mixed 10 different varieties with DC. It was last winter. I still have DC bud that gives me a headache and doesnt hit the mark. None of it did. I like and respect Tom Hill, as I do several breeders, and That was a dead end.
To Be fair, I havnt grown the crosses I made, except one DeepChunk/SweetTooth, and it looks good. I just hope it doesnt take on DC genes

I would suggest that you use the DC males if you are worried about the majority of DC genes showing up. The mitochondrial DNA will usually be a little more prevalent in the cross. I would love to see DC or X18 put onto a Thai, Hawaiian or Haze. FWIW the DC x Jack Herer I saw was uber frosty and had a great deal of the DC flavor and high mixed in.

I found a little information about the Hawaiian indica. They came from seed stock that the BoEL took to Maui in the early '70s and was worked with there. The real Maui Wowie(Lahaina) is a very minty strain most times I have seen it. It was the only indica being grown commercially in Hawaii, and due to it's non-sativa effects it got the name wowie. It is usually lime green, but some purple tendencies show up, and I believe that those are other indica(90 day wonder) genetics showing up.

I was just about to ask the same NL5/Afghan question? I am a huge old school Indica fan, and would love to hear more.

Also what do you think the main difference between NL5/Skunk, and Afghan Skunk as far as aroma, taste, knockout stone, and over all potential?

Afghan Haze

It may have been something that I made.
The Maple Leaf cultivar AfgT had a full sister, AfgS. She was a fruitier counterpart to AfgT.
AfgSxSK1 was narcotically strong. I remember a few occasions that as group of people smoking it would suddenly get hit with a wave of warmth and then look at me with suspicion. I was inspired to cross this with the NL2xKush4, because I could detect a hint of commonality in the phenotypes. I never did find out how that panned out.

Hi Nevil,

Is AfgS the mother used for the Afghan Haze?

When I say NL5 did not cross well with ML, I mean it didn't fizz. I didn't find that many indica/indica crosses did. Indica to indica/sativa did. As a breeder who puts a product on the market, you find you have to deal with a few issues. What people say they want and what they really want. All those people who now seem to be against 1:1 matings would be the first to hammer you in public if they didn't get what they want in one packet of seeds. Remember brocolli man?
Predictability and genetic diversity do not go hand in hand. So you let them belittle you for doing 1:1 matings and they post pictures of the best buds in the world.

The market has changed since my day. Medical cannabis is more prominent. If you are looking for a particular effect, yield is not as important. If you say, forget about yield, I could blow you away, but few do.

If you are asking me questions about strains, you should (at least in your mind) preface the question with; Regarding the work you did prior to 2005........
This will limit the questions to those I may be able to answer.

I'am a medical user for me the most important things are:

1. Effect/potency
2. Tolerence/resistance to therapeutic effects with repeated application
3. Duration of effects
4. Flavor (this is always important)

Nevil - "If you say, forget about yield, I could blow you away, but few do."

Forget about what? Huh?

Please blow us all away.

BIG BUD

Hello Nevil,
Could you give me a short summery of critical mass/big bud. Yeilds you have scene, smells from diffrent pheno types, nute levels it likes, growing conditions it seems to favour, bud structure. I have been groing this strain for about a year now. I have a large amount growing right now of a pheno type that smells like overly ripe mangos and has very purple stems it also is a large yeilder. I would jus like to hear your thoughts on the strain and some of your experiences with it.

Thanks
MJ-
