Breeding techniques

I also went to art college and my arty firends all smoked sativas, they wante the less obvious more esoteric and subtle high.

The Sativas I like are very obvious in their effects, and not subtle at all. The haze I used to smoke, was actually indica sativa(NL5Hz) but I never saw an indica that could slice through it. However the haze would slice through an indica high like it was nothing. When I was acclimated to haze, the strongest indicas had very little effect on me. Same story with the Malawi Gold

Also the Malawi I had was a pure Sativa landrace and also much stronger than any indica I have ever tried.

The Nepalese I collected was also very strong, but strong is not the same as nice. What was the Malawi like and do you still have it?

A single corn plant self pollinates , where is the mis-understanding ? The real question is why would we look to corn , for a better understanding of how to breed cannabis ?

I agree, I've had a few very strong but not very nice sativas. Few years ago I had a Nepalese x South African that gave me pressure migraines, that one was very strong but unpleasant.

here's only been two Malawis on the market in recent years, the main one was the one from African Seeds, they were shut down by the South African govt but sold a lot of stock to Seedsman in the Uk and Seedsman sold their Malawi, Durban and Swazi until very recently. That version has two main phenos, one is a classic xmas tree type with large but airy buds, the other is a very branchy pheno that grows very long branches, the lower ones getting near horizontal, think of a menora to visualise the structure of this one. The menora pheno has lots of small buds all over a huge plant, this one is a bit more trippy than the other, aromas are complex, earthy, I got a carrot smell from most of mine. The other Malawi came from Afropips and was different but broadly smilar, had more phenos, was also highly potent.

I read the post about corn, I agree with him, just because Jesse gogoled some factoids abouit corn doesn't mean that GiTTs point about how corn pollinates in the field is invalid but typical Jesse, rather than trying to debate his point he just does a quick cut n paste then mocks any responses, that is such an arrogant and sociopathic way to behave. GiTT is correct, the way corm pollinates in a field is to cross pollinate, that is how most species pollinate. In many species the plants mature their male and female flowers at different times to avoid self-pollination, I believe the same thing happens in some varietals of corn, this is a mechanism to maintain the diversity of the genome.

How does open pollination help us in our current situation , most cant chose from thousands of plants to get us to our ultimate goal , drug type cultivator ? Corn open pollinates in the field with thousands of plants . Cannabis still exists in nature with out us , we could always take it back an start over if need be , it would take a lot of work , but it could be done . With all the technology (google sat for example) you can zoom in to someones back yard an see what kind of dog they have from SPACE . I just dont see people being able to do massive grows outdoors ,Like Corn, with cannabis anymore until its legal , i could be wrong though .

Has anyone experimented with selfed males? I'm wondering if the female progeny of a selfed male crossed with a normal female tend to show hermy tendancies also?

lol

You know other people are reading this right?

Yes I do. And most seem too dumb to use google. I'll leave you to your paranoid fantasies and your picture posting fagotry.

Mark:
I've asked everyone who I believe has selfed males about the phenotypes expressed therein...none would answer me even in private. I suspect the YY's don't germinate and they see a 1/3 females and 2/3rds male ratios...

Lol....You say that most people are dumb, which I guess you are talking about the people at this site and then in the same breath say that none has bothered to answer you in private.......Hmmmm I think I know who the dumb one is:D

has anybody ,on record, even reversed a male an grown out the resulting seed ? I think i remember reading chimera reversing DJs male , but i think the seed wasnt viable , i could be wrong , im sure he could answer . Its hard to guess if something will be 1/3 this or 2/3 that with out actually trying it . I want to eventually try FLOREL on a male and see what happens .

Hi, this is a subject I personally like, and something I want to do is breed male populations.. I have some posts saved that might interest you..

I don't have any proof of it but I would imagine that the hermie trait will pass on from males to the daughters and possibly manifest there. If hermie free cannabis is the goal I would avoid them.

True... if the male is in there it is in there to make seed. So it is doing no immediate damage... but does it pass the trait on to the girls and result in hermie females or just hermie sons of those females?

Anyone else have an opinion?
Exactly what I'm thinking...

This is one of the things I've been thinking about... Seems to me that some type of experiment could be done using reversed males to get a rough idea of what is traveling with the Y chromosome.

Could intersex males be carrying the trait exclusively on the Y?

Will the trait become more intense if a male with these tendencies is reversed and then selfed since the resulting progeny are getting a double dose of Y?

These reversal techniques seem like they could yield some very useful information of exactly what is on the X and Y chromosomes, with a properly structured experiment, and the ability to carry the experiment out.

Another thought... can a YY male be reversed and yield seed? This might be important to the success of any experiment like this.

and the thread were chimera mentions reversing males etc, i think he's been doing it for a few years now....

Yes coxnox you did miss something......But in all honesty what has this got to do about breeding techniques:confused:
Please mate lets keep it to the subject......nobody is going to learn anything from your question.

ok so tell me what i miss ?
and for the memory, i'm not the one that did open that debate, so pleaz go say that to the man that did open it(and not only one time, that's why i did ask that question) !!

My purpose with this thread is to help people with their breeding. IMO the best way to increase quality and diversity is to have lots of people breeding their own variants of the best lines available. We all have our own way of doing things. I'm not suggesting that my way is the only way. It's the end product that counts. One plant can change the world.

As far as I'm concerned, any tool that gets me where I want to go is a valid tool. I've found that intensive inbreeding followed by line breeding to be very effective. A study of pedigrees of other species where pedigrees are kept, also proves this to be the case. Many people choose the route of endless outcrossing and also have their successes.
All matings are 1:1 matings, the difference is that with deliberate 1:1 matings you know who the father is.
Selfing is a possible exception, but is also a valid tool for fixing a trait. I would have loved to selfed NL5 to try and exaggerate the resin production. It didn't work with that plant, but it still may work for others. Feminisation as a breeding strategy seems to work for some. Cabron showed us some heavy yielding plants, bred in this way. The only moral arguments I have against fems is that it may cause hermies, but if you've tested the mating and it doesn't, well it doesn't. The other argument is that it stops people from breeding without using specialised teks. You could fix that by including an extra packet of seeds from a M to F mating that would even act as a suitable mate for the best fems.
I'm about empowering people, IMO thats the best way to save the genepool.

All this talk about open pollinated landraces, is wasted on me, I haven't got any. How many are in the MN catalogue? Mostly the people waffling on about it don't have or sell any either. That and saving the genepool is mostly noble sounding horseshit. The genepool doesn't need saving. Cannabis will out last us. What needs saving is good genes. I thought the best way to do that was to spread the genetics of the best individual plants. I seem to have had some success.
If Chimera or Gitt want to explain how what they are doing is better, I'm willing to listen. Start with what you are growing and how it was bred. Then tell us how you are saving the genepool. If you don't want to do that, stop giving me a hard time.

I'm not here to answer every question people have. People keep sending me PMs complaining that they want answers to this and that. I read all the PMs and I try at some point to fit things in that are relevant to what I want to tell.
Maybe I should set up a phone line where people can grill me for 5 bucks a minute. Otherwise, I'm starting my life over again from scratch and I have to try and make a living. I'm sorry if that interferes with your plans.
I'm volunteering my time and I can only give you so much. I hate writing and I'm quite a slow typist. Just this post has taken me more than an hour. I can't devote hours to PMs daily. I've got other stuff I have to do and like more. All this typing interrupts my smoking too.

My problem with 1:1 seedlots or flash in the pans is varied but from a personal POV its bad to form a population from and get variance to bred with for the future. not to mention how many seedlots have vanished due to no back up and an end result of 1:1 matings, parents gone and so does the strain.

IMO to bred from a bottlenecked population you need to use selfing and apomoxis!.

So when I read you rushed on a plane to afghanistan it wasn't to preserve the stock? it was for what?

I did. It was Haze C male.
N.

Could you tell us more , like were the seeds viable , and if they were , what was the male/female ratio , and did you use chemicals to reverse or stress ?

Unclepeter , yea that was the thread , I remember being intrigued by the title .

So when I read you rushed on a plane to afghanistan it wasn't to preserve the stock? it was for what?

Off the top of my head I can think of two good reasons - to get some good Afghani seed and to have an adventure smoking some fine hash.

Nev went to Pakistan before he had any good Afghans, before he was donated the NM Afghan he used for some hybrids in the 85 catalogue, before Jim Ortega sent seeds and before Sam turned up with Afghan#1.

Nev had Colombians, Thais, Nigerians, all sativas, he would have wanted and needed some indica blood and it wouldn't have been easy to find indica seeds back in the early 80s in Amsterdam, youc could pick sativa seeds from imports but indica exports were in the form of hash so no seeds, Lowlands had some indicas but they were all outdoor breeds and I think Nev said they weren't great.
