The SilverHazed Mind.

I just realized that I never put up a pic of SSH#10 before chopping him. Here is a photo of him.

Nice male, very sativa dominant by the looks.
I would let him pollinate my keeper cut.😄
What he smelled like?

Thank you Swifty. His leaves are by far the longest and thinnest of the entire straw. He is also the only plant to show 10 fingers so far.

Don't you worry, he is a promising candidate for f2's down the line. 😉

Not much of an odor yet, a generic "fresh" green scent with a hint of frankensence and the tiniest "generic" skunk. This is only when he is putting off a scent though. Some days all I get are green, and others I can smell the underlying aroma. Whenever I mess with the roots is when I get the most smell. At least this early.

When I have the time and equipment for f2's, I'll flower him out and see how he does. If he excells in aroma, sac development, and or frost then I will use him and see what he offers. Aesthetically, he checks the boxes for me.

@musashi if he is already so NLD for an f1. Then wouldn't a propper mating with him throw out some crazy intense NLD throwbacks? Maybe I could find something that looks similiar to Pappa Haze C? 🤞

Totally agree on Sativa dom Swifty. Your answer leads to to a question I’ve had for a while and it is: How do you guys select a male for breeding? I decide based on if I want a big dad an early or late one etc and feel late one may be the most potent but not 100% on that so another question is how do you select a potent male?

Here's a good starting point

Thanks Mu, I just started speed reading and saw something I believe in. Hollow stems…it can mean non fiber so more of the type of plant we want or one that has the right mix of water air and nutes but a good thing to consider. For myself, I like to breed similar plants with similar plants or with some of the same forefathers. For instance, a good mix to me would be NH x Holy Grail. Or my old time sativa x SSH to get more Sativa but still with enough Indy to keep it mellower. Also a Widow x Shark…just my thoughts on breeding, thanks again.

The ladies got their first dose of aerated vermicompost tea today. I tried to build it with ingredients geared towards veg for early stretch and root development. The girls/boys in veg got a dose of the tea as well.

I've a question for you. The RO water I used before brewing was ph 8, the compost tea was ph 7.6 upon completion of brewing. Both are a bit high for cannabis. Should I have adjusted the ph after brewing and before watering, or adjusted before brewing?

I pulled SSH#18 today, he declared himself a male. 0% intersex so far between the MM and SSH. :sneaky:

My first grow using bag seed had a true hermaphrodite. I was very disappointed as the plant was the most promising up until they declared themself.

I did some stem rubs today. Two or three of the SSH gave off a garlic aroma, while one gave off a bit of a Chive vibe.

SSH#5 has grown to 15" and smells of bergamot when her stem is rubbed.
SSH#7 has grown to 15 1/2".

The SSH seem to have longer petiole than the Medicine Man. SSH#13 is 13" tall with a 4 1/4" petiole.

Here is a picture of #5 and #7.

The SSH are taller than my MM. The nodes are also further apart though with better light penetration. Alot less budsites than the MM, at this stage. But the smells are stronger so far.

What about hollow stems on the female side? Or not hollow stems?

When the the time comes I have a few basic traits I'm most interested in. Strength and type of aroma, trichome development whether it be early development or amount of frost at the end of flowering, and density/size of flower clusters. Everything else is secondary for me.

Space and time permitting, once I settle on a line to work with I'm going do as @shantibaba suggest and pair up the best 3 males with the best 3 females then grow out the resulting seeds and do a progeny test. That will be the difinitive test to determine strength/potentcy and if the traits I selected for are passed from the male to his offspring.

@Swifty I began re-reading your SSH journal last night, amazing btw, & you mentioned an some aromas of your keeper which I'm findbing but haven't been able to out a finger on until you "vocalized" them.
My SSh#5 has a bergamot scent about her, like an orangeish lime.
Today SSH#8 smells slightly skunky and sweet with layers of fabric softner. Your descriptor of fabric softner fits her perfectly. Currently #8 is the strongest smelling. Just taking her height, 15 1/2", released her aroma. When the leaves were rustled ilI got the sweej skunk, when I rubbed the stem she revealed the fabric softner.

I hope I find something akin to your keeper. She sounds and looks amazing!

Btw, my SSH are the tallest and the healthiest in the tent right now.

This line certainly carries complex terpene profiles, I hope you find an even better pheno than mine!

Looking forward in seeing you finish your plants and your smoke reports.:)

I should be so lucky. 🤗

Edit:

Great! That means my first pheno hunt will be even more fun!

I promise not to skip out on the smoke report. 😉 Although, if all goes well, it may take a while to get to. 🤔😇

The real problem will be giving it enough time to cure. I'll be out of meds well before harvest.

Update: For once I got up early enough to tend to my girls before work. @Mr. Brown Nothing like a cup of some dark roasted Costa Rican coffe and pretty green gals to start the day. ;) While I waited for the gals to wake up, I checked on the clones that were up potted.
Great news, the last of the SSH got moved into the flowering tent. Unfortunately, the other SSH I recently transplanted has been declared DOA. Worry not, I have the mum backed up for next round.

I want to leave my Mr. Nice Family with a nice pic of my flower tent. It's become a veritable jungle!
Edit: I didnt realize so much of thenpic was blocked by my thermostat. I'll upload a propper, unobstructed pic tonight.

The Super Silver Haze are the two rows on the right. The middle two rows are my Medicine Man. The two rows on the left are the fems I got elsewhere.

I had an issue with high humidity for hot minute. My chemovars from Mr. Nice handled the humidity issue like champs. The only one in my flower tent suffering right now are the fems. These genetics from Shanti can really withstand a beating! :geek:

Stay hazed.
