Grail: The Ultimate Haze Hybrid

Interesting, ive done a few african varieties and i think they are the most under rated genetics out there. The raw power behind some specimens are almost indescribable. They are too much for most to handle, heart racing and intense. The flavors were very unpalattable, hit alot of peoples gag reflex for some reason. I did durban poison/skunk #1, malawi(afropips) and a swazi(afropips). Sounds promising to say the least, happy pheno hunting.

Well, they must not have changed it. I dont see how it could get any stronger then this cut I have.
Gotta admit something to You Guys. I grew one female seed of LA Conf and struck gold. I dont usually grow female seeds. I fuckin scored big time. absolute top shelf snob weed. Its actually stronger then my Headband

The thing to remember about femenized seeds...The grower who creates them is usually picking his favorite plant out of a large pool to then reverse into male form. This has made me realize through experience that femmed seeds are generally more uniform and almost always of a good quality.

However, others seem to say that in breeding these is where the problem lies, because herms tend to appear later down the line after a few generations. This has led me to simply keep my femmed keepers alive just as they are rather than to try to breed them with other strains.

:
I picked the seeded LA conf plant this evening. It was seeded on 3 branches I think. One cross is Nevilles Haze, One is Mango Haze and one is the Oaxacan/Durban/Oaxacan.
I grew the plant indoors, then took it out for the late winter Sun to finish up. It turned very purple. It wont taste like a purple though. More like a sweet lemon hash cookie.

Let us know if you need a test grow of any of these :D

Hi all.....Well today something special was found that has us both very, very excited, even without a smoke test.
We have found that the early flowering Kariba Surprise (African ) has the frankinsence smell that Nev say's was dominant with the the Haze A male.
It also has a awesome resin content and is so Haze like.
We have some early bud drying now just for a test......hopefully this will be top shelf and will be a new addition to the Grail.

So Bigherb.....dont get to much of a sore hand:D Only kidding of course.
But we have found your Frankie smell.

We would like to thank everyone for not bringing this thread down with the bickering that has been happening of late.
Dr P....Thank you also for your constant photo's of your grows, always enjoyable:D

Hmm, very interesting. As I explained to Nev, I always thought the Haze A with it's spicier palette reminded me of Colombian Gold strongly and the Haze C with it's sweeter more citric profile reminded me of Thai. That's just my deciphering from all the Haze hybrids I've smoked.

Now you're found the frankincense I've always associated with Colombian Gold in a central African.

Makes you wonder if the Colombian genepool is largely descended from African strains that came with the black slave trade?

Might I humbly suggest if you find a Colombian Gold stud you crossed him to the Karibe, I for one, love the spicy leathery woodsy palette of the Colombian so that cross would sound to me like something I would love to try.

BTW, found anything from your African stuff that smells of spicy carrots with hints of mangos?

Just ask because the best Malawi I ever saw was like that and the Zamal/Haze I had and was my best ever sativa probably was also like that so I kind of associate that spicy carrot thing with mind blowing Africans.

Hi BH.......Yeah Nev said this could make some interesting thoughts on the origin of haze:D
We have just put the first lot of CG out to sex out and will get the next lot started soon. If there is a good stud we will do a cross.
We had a Purple Mexican Thai male show under 24hrs of light and a Purple Afghani Thai female show after only 3 days outside.....any thoughts on this ???
The rest of the Africans are still going to be awhile yet, this was just a early flowering one, so we havent been able to get a good smell as yet.

We had our first test of some Hawaiian/Nam, it was a bit immature and definetly not cured.
Although not up there with the Oax or MM it was still a nice high. I have a old broken toe that gives me a hard time, plus a few other injuries and after smoking this all the pain dissapeared. There are 2 other pheno's from this strain to test yet.....but I believe this is a very good med strain for pain.

a quick story of african.

my uncle that recently passed travelled the world in the 60s and 70s, smuggling and mailing weed and hash back from several places.

one of his favorite sayings to me was," its nothing to throw out your thai stick grass for"

anyways, he told me of some black african that looked like it had black powder covering it and was the most powerful. i kind of didnt believe him, maybe he didnt see it good enough.
i didnt get a description on any flavor, just wondering if anyone knows what it was or have tried it before, and maybe if its out there it could make some nice offspring.

On the African weed thing, I must have seen hundred of kilos of the stuff, it varied a lot from stuff that barely worked to stuff that had me laid on the floor with a bass bin either side of my head chilling to deep dub.

There's a simple story behind how African weed began to flow into the UK, there is a guy from Liverpool, I can't lay my hands on my notes on this now so I can't be precise on dates and names but I will look for the notes.

Anyways, this Scouser, a black fella called Michael Showers (I think) wa a fairly bigtime gangster and in the 70s he went back to West Africa (Ghana I think) to see family and he set up a smuggling route bringing tons of African weed into Liverpool docks, it was this family conenction and the control of the docks that allowed this trade to flourish. A lot of what they brought in was crap, the market wasn't discerning, weed was scarce so even crap made them a huge profit.

But it wasn't all crap, there was even some cobs like miniature Malawi cobs, that was the stuff that had me laid on the floor listening to Lee Perry records.

Anyways, I can only speak for the north of England but we had so much African weed in the 80s and 90s here and the West African stuff grew into decent plants, most people my age or older got their start planting seeds from African import, I know some people still hold clones from old African imports.

I don't think it's unusual to see an earlier plant pop out of an African line, the African genepool is a proper mish-mash and short, fast individuals tend to pop out of a lot of Central African lines, a good example is the Banghi and Angola Roja from La Mano Negra and the Ethiopian Highland from African Seeds. There is a short, fast (9-10 weeks indoors) pheno of Ethiopian Highland that pops out maybe 1 in 100 and it is mindblowing, looks like a mini xmas tree and is, I suspect a recessive pheno of something from the Middle East brought to East Africa through the Arab trade.

There's not much variation at all in that Colombian line and the males and females look identical in veg so I doubt there will be much difference between the males you find. One variation that is still there is stem and petiole colouration, some are pretty purple on the stems and petioles, others stay green.

We had a Purple Mexican Thai male show under 24hrs of light and a Purple Afghani Thai female show after only 3 days outside.....any thoughts on this ???

Hmm, not seen that behaviour myself, the one that showed sex 3 days after going outside must be a heavily Afghan leaning pheno, the Afghan line I took the male parent from would try to flower on 15-16 hours of light I found.

I have seen plenty of males that showed under 24hrs of light over the years, often indicas but not always, out of the half dozen Purple Thai I just ran I had three males and three females, none showed sex until at least 20+ days of 12/12, could be a recessive Afghan dom male you found? The Mexican part of that cross came from really old seeds and we only got females and one of those grew male balls so I know that line had an intersex issue, the Purple Thai definitely doesn't so I hoped it would be a good line to cross to the Mexican. Keep an eye out for spurioys flowers on those though, the Mexican ones will be a brighter green colour in the foliage I expect as the Mexican parent was and the Purple Thai has darker foliage from the Afghan in it.

This question made me think of one of Mandala's new offerings that lists 'mango-carrot' as one of its flavor notes. I won't post the link to another seed site here as that doesn't seem cool, but it's called 'Mango Zamal' (it's not a pure African, though) Might be worth a read.

The African sativas have always fascinated me as well.

Yeah, I think Mandala either got hold of the Zamal B clone that Gerrit found from old seeds from Gypsy that originated with Claude on La Reunion or they bought some of those seeds from Gypsy and found their own breeding Zamal.

The Zamal B smelled and tasted like spicy carrots with hints of Mango. I've grown three crosses of that plant and they all contained individuals that had that same spicy carrots and mango. The spicy carrot smell/taste also turns up in some phenos of Malawi Gold.

That is intriguing ,as far as i recall a first of frankincense reported in African lines .This loine really has my attention i ope Nevil aswell.i cant wait till you harvest n smoke to hear if it can be a possible canidate for the grail

has the frankinsence smell that Nev say's was dominant with the the Haze A male

this again iswhy i wish Nevil was posting ,Soo from this post we can say with certainty that incense was present in both haze male a n C frankincense in haze A just reported n sandlewood in haze C earlier psoted by Nevil .That is exciting n got my wheels turning

Nev said this could make some interesting thoughts on the origin of haze

Id agree that is truly somthing to ponder,Damn post like these make me wish things didnt turn out how they did and nevil was still posting .

It isnt crazy to believe possible with the history of the african slaves bringing stock to colombia

Well i cant wait for all the Reports to come from the kariba n MM

Id also like to say thankyou for all your hard work and contributions ,aswell as your spreading preserving N kindness you have shown since comin to the net

It is the Purple Mex Thai that is showing the more purple colouration at the moment and it has done that since seedling stage, anyway we will be doing some pics soon and you can see then.

Interesting....We havent culled the male yet, just turned it into a eunuch for the time being:D

That's usually what I do with males too - cut em back to 2-3 nodes so they take a couple of weeks to recover and that gives me time to see what males and females I have overall.

It is the Purple Mex Thai that is showing the more purple colouration at the moment and it has done that since seedling stage, anyway we will be doing some pics soon and you can see then.

Interesting, purple veins on the leaves and purple petioles are common in the PA line and seems to have passed on in some of the outcrosses. The PA x Thai seems to be the one that has the most purple colouration, about two thirds of the plants turn purple at some point in flowering. The PA x Cheese only had 1 purple female out of 50 so there is a lot of scope for variation between those two, the shortest, fastest one are likely to be the most colourful as it the Afghan parent that was purple. I never finished my Purple Mex Thai, they got 3 weeks into flower then I had the mother of all fungus gnat infestations and the stuff I got at the local garen centre to kill em also killed my plants. Wokred a treat on the gnats though, three days and everything was dead - gnats, plants, even the silvertails in the runoff tray. Damn bottle said it was 'all natural ingredients' or some such but I'm sure there was some nasty poison in there for it to have done that.

both our heads are full of all sorts of stuff:D

I bet - MM, Oax, HawxNam etc etc

You lucky feckers hehe!

An early African with frankinsence? Wow, can't wait to here the smoke report on that. I just saw the pics, it looks like some awesome stuff, it even has a sort of Hazy look to it.

I hope it will cross really well with what you have going on there. I have had good luck crossing haze with Malawi. Seems to mesh really well with African.

Thanks for the updates and the pics.

Frankies sounds good!

Heres a Maui pheno going out back. Its at about 14 weeks or more. Real nice strong sweet twang of an odor. Real sticky. I may run a giant plant of this outdoors inground this spring. As long as the buds test out strong. Ive gotta feeling they will.

Now that plant looks to be crying out to be crossed with something non-dominant that will bulk her up and shorten the flower time but retain her resin and high. NL5 would be the obvious one but in her absence a good C99 male would be a good bet.
