Thank you very much for taking the time to put up this excellent info.

any discussion on harvest times and percentage of amber/cloudy/clear.

For those of you wondering what a SSH Blueberry cross looks like, I encourage you to look for a strain called Blue Dream...there was some available at the class, and let me tell you it was cream of the crop...I have grown and smoked Blue Dream, and as far as I know it's only available in clone form...having it in seed form, or anything close to it, would be fantastic...one of the best strains I have ever come across...quality smoke with a clear, up high...perfect for taking notes...jay:D

I must agree 100% I love that strain I heard it was a cross with bluebery and haze... I even emailed shanti and asked him what haze would he recommend to cross a blueberry with... Im not in Cali so i was gifted from a friend of a friend who came from out there and brought the sample;) he was like it depends how much haze you want he was neville haze is 75% haze and SSH, MH are 50% haze..
i didnt know it was crossed with super silver haze wow!!! Hey Jay This thread is awesome thanks for all that info man major props dude... here is a pic of the blue dream i had my lil paws on.....

I like your enthusiasm, bigherb...:D

I'll ask him as many questions as he will let me...it may take some time, but I should be able to get the answers to a few of your questions...DJ spoke of the African Black Magic a couple of times...when he talks of that cannabis, he's mostly talking about the effect...he described it as an almost instant change in reality...like walking into another world...he compared it to a substance that's supposedly ten times stronger than LSD (I forget the name)...lucid, vivid, instant alternate reality...very trippy sh-t...he said he spoke to a guy who came across it once and he had virtually the same experience with that smoke that DJ had...Short said it might be originally from Kenya, and perhaps to start there if you're looking for it...he's had his eyes and ears open for quite some time and he can't seem to source any beans...he actually encourages people to try to find the genetics themselves...whatever that plant is, it's off the charts as far as sativas go...well worth the hunt, according to him...when I say he's not working with any pure sativas, I mean he's not working on releasing any pure sativas...he's probably working with all kinds of pure sativas somewhere...he knows sativas like the back of his hand...listening to him talk about them is poetry, I swear...I highly doubt he's ever not worked with almost purely sativas...I could be wrong, but that's my feeling on him...he works on releasing plants that other people can grow, but that share characteristics/expressions of those old strains we all love so much...think of his work along the lines of Shanti/Neville creating practical haze hybrids...his plate is full at all times, so I think we're talking loads of projects all going on at the same time...Rose Bud is an old popular variety but is more along the lines of personal headstash as it does not yield very well...I do not know the genetics of that plant but I can ask...Azure Haze, and I'm not sure if he's releasing this or his son is, is a cross of a stellar SSH cut he/they have (which DJ speaks very highly of) with a Blueberry male...he said he was going to call it Sapphire Haze, but he thought that would be too confusing...I know he likes the name Azure...I like that name too...sounds good to me...hope this helps...jay:)

well im very happy for you too hav this opportunity and most thankful for your willingness to share

thanks for the info on african black magic id lov too experience those effects ,the suggestion of kenya origins is interesting as he reported

It was equatorial Black African, the supposed herb of some tribe, Pygmy group, or another equally incredible origin! It was likely an indigenous Central African herb

kenya in on the equator but more east

when I say he's not working with any pure sativas, I mean he's not working on releasing any pure sativas

i understand ,its just with som many hyrids nowadays and him havin many sat dom strains and access too proven pure sativas of yesteryear id really hope too see somthin unique

Rose Bud is an old popular variety but is more along the lines of personal headstash as it does not yield very well...I do not know the genetics of that plant but I can ask...Azure Haze, and I'm not sure if he's releasing this or his son is, is a cross of a stellar SSH cut he/they have (which DJ speaks very highly of) with a Blueberry male

i believe rose bud is an old flo select

the azure haze i was really hopin was somthin different ,his selection skills are top of the line but do we need another BB or SSH cross

thanks for clearing som things up

id also lov you to ask about his OTM i understand he doesnt hav the parents any longer but how about f2's or another project on the leendary limited edition release,im a hashplant lover and everything about that strain sounds excellent

Harvest Windows

Thank you very much for taking the time to put up this excellent info.

any discussion on harvest times and percentage of amber/cloudy/clear.

Not a problem, Angus...I am merely passing along what I consider to be invaluable information to people that appreciate it the most...one big happy community and all that other good stuff, mate...harvest times and trichomes were discussed...again, it's all relative to the strain and the pheno selected, but in general he recommends a 30x magnifier (as was sold at Radio Shack, not sure if it is anymore) to identify when you think your plant is done...he did say that this process is HIGHLY subjective, and that letting your plant go another week or even one more day changes the effects/flavors/aromas of the finished product...his advice was to play with harvest windows, and to sample the same plant harvested at different times...when you find the expressions/effects/flavors you are looking for, then you will have a better sense of the percentages of trichomes...I hope that makes sense...in essence, let the plant speak to you and play with your flowering times...find the flowering time that produces the desired expressions, then have a look at the trichs so you know what you're looking for...since no two runs are ever the same, once you know your percentages you will eventually harvest when the plant says it's time and not when the calendar says it's time...it's all about learning how to read your plant and find the traits you are seeking...coaxing those traits is the tricky bit...finding the percentages and flowering times can be tricky too...essentially, harvest at different times to 'dial in' your strain...welcome to the MNS forum and I do hope I've sufficiently answered your question...jay:)

Cheers!

Nice pics, face...so I see that you too have come across the strain Blue Dream...wonderful stuff, that...I've never heard the lineage was anything other than SSH x BB, so I cannot confirm or deny bigherb's comments...either way, it is a strain well worth trying if anyone ever gets the chance...she will not disappoint...jay;)

Notes & Quotes : Part 6

So this is the final installment, folks...I hope everyone has learned something...I know I have...we are all better for having a breeder like DJ Short...word up...:D

Notes & Quotes

On Tobacco
"The hardest part of quitting was thinking that I wouldn't get to do it ever again."
"What it's used for traditionally is communicating with ancestors/relatives."-->communal smoke
"Cigarettes are the crack of tobacco."
(DJ smokes a tobacco pipe. Very old school.)

The Movement
"Out of the compost (think 1980) it (the movement) grows."
1980-->most disillusioned/worst day of his life, Reagan was elected.
-->He warns us to never forget what happened. "This changed everything."
"(Now) We definitely have our work cut out for us, but we are getting a more level playing field."

"Don't ever smoke pollen. It's like smoking hair."

Q: What do you recommend for spider mites?
A: You're not going to like it (the answer). High elevation in the desert.

"My pH down is white vinegar."

Johnny Blaze
Neville's Haze (female) x Blueberry Sativa (male)
-->one grower took it to South America and grew it at altitude,
and new phenotypes were expressed because of change in environment.

THE END

Conclusions

PROPS goes out to the MCC Directory for having the class and making DJ Short available to the public...the benefit to the medical community is incredible...

On the second day he opened the floor to questions...that's why the topics are random...I hope you learned from the notes and this thread...I'd hoped to paint DJ in the appropriate light...I had an enormous amount of respect for him before the class, and now that respect has multiplied exponentially...

DJ is a highly intelligent man (Mensa smart)...only someone like him could even ever think to create a strain like Blueberry...it would take a person with clarity of vision to create something that unique and wonderful...it would take someone with real character to create cannabis with the character apparent in Blueberry...

Without DJ, we would not be talking about this strain...without DJ, we wouldn't be talking about Sagarmatha's Blueberry, or Dutch Passion's Blueberry, or Nirvana's Blueberry...there are so many quality Blue crosses out there it's ridiculous...that strain is so good it makes other strains better...you can't expect hacks to come up with something like that...you can only expect enlightened intelligent passionate growers who have transcended such inferior concepts as greed and profit, instead focusing on value and benefit, to even begin to breed such a plant...in my opinion, DJ has transcended the term breeder now that he has come out to share his opinions, views, and techniques with the rest of us...he is a serious individual, and the experience is not one to be missed...

Thanks again for everything, DJ...;)

I would hope people would use these notes...my thinking is that since you already have some notes, you can just sit back and enjoy the class without having to take notes of your own...furthermore, I realized when I started pasting my notes that, rather than answering everyone's questions, this thread was actually going to create more questions than it answered...now that we have the answers to some of these rather basic questions, I would hope that the conversation would evolve in his classes...it was clear to me that DJ had to hold himself back on a couple of occasions...he is capable of going into areas of thought that not too many other people would understand...I noticed this twice...first, when he was discussing selection traits (F1s, F2s, F3s) he limited himself to four traits...I thought that was funny...the second time he did it, during a break he was asked to elaborate on his selection methods...the person that asked him the question had no idea what they were getting themselves into...let me just say that there are many levels to the way he selects plants, some obvious and most not...his selection method is as complex as he is...it took him about ten seconds to get deep enough into the process of selection for both parties to realize he was talking way over our heads...think about it...he releases F5s, so when he talks about breeding he has to stop at 4 traits and F3s so he does not 'lose' the class...he's that deep...

No matter what you learned from this thread, if you get the chance or can go, then I would say you MUST go to this class...

Not going is not an option...you will kick yourself if you don't go and you could have...I promise you...this has to be the first time in the history of cannabis in the US that a breeder has come forward and offered something this generous, authentic, and valuable...even better than his genetics, he is offering himself to the people...he cares about his plants...he cares about the patients...he cares about the movement...go and meet him and see what I'm talking about...those of you who cannot make it, I hope I have painted a detailed enough picture for you...perhaps we will be lucky enough to have DJ join our forum...

One final note...places to source landrace seeds were discussed...Costa Rica and Venezuela were tops on the list...Peru, Chile, and Bolivia were also mentioned...also, I'd like to thank all the IC people for coming through...I would post this information over at your forum too, but as I told DJ I was banned...

I will say that DJ is very thankful to the people at his helpdesk...respect to Red, Mr.Alkaline, Elevator Man, Bohempian, AgD and all those that support DJ Short and his gear...more threads to follow ('DJ Short's Blueberry' & 'Whitaker Blues')...'the proof is in the seed', so we shall see what we shall see...stay tuned all...

And last but not least, a big THANKYOU to Shanti and MNS for letting me post this information here...in our search for the truth may we all grow together...jay:)

Hello. From what I know, dj still have b133 - mother of OTM. But special sativa male used not more (he add some sativa traits to otm).
Ive read, that sometime may be re-released, but soon will be freshed up Moonshine Rocket Fuel female.
In any case, at autumn will have some F2's. And I think from verrry quality parents... so let me know after outdoor season

i hope he considers re -releasing that line ,keep me posted on those f2's id lov to hear about them

as for blue dream the common story ive come across is its a santa cruz haze crossed to a BB ,im not into fruity strains soo she didnt get my attention until an OT i highly respect told me it was very spicy and powerful also ,then i com across this post BELOW which claims an incense smell now she's got my attention

BD is very popular and common here in SoCal, but there are obviously a few different cuts going around. Original 'lore' had it that it was clone only and originated up around Santa Cruz, so that sounds like a good place to start a hunt for the cut. The cut I prefer has a loose, haze-ey look to the bud, a slight incense smell, distinctive blue exhale smoke with persistent, sweet 'funk' that hangs in the air

Thanks for welcome. Here are few more OTM pics. Also have F-13. Unfortunately rare pheno of F-13 (calyxes instead buds) I have had no more, it was A+++ smoke but very hard2keep/clone (but have simillar reversed hermie male,,, that tutti frutti smell is amazing). Both, OTM and F-13, are top notch but my heart bell for F-13. Sometime I want make bigger selection.

Once again many thanks for your notes!!! Very good to reading even for me - i cannot speak english much good.

Great information, Bo...I'm just beginning to sort out which blue lines come from what batches...different males and females...DJ did say one of the dads was lost...I believe he said it was the Grape Krush dad, which is also the father of 3(?) other strains...he said he thought the reason it died was because they kept it under 24/0 photoperiod...it was part of the conversation about why that photoperiod can be detrimental to the health, vigor, and phenotypic expression of cannabis...from what I understand now, relatively speaking males are harder to keep alive than females...I did not know that, but that explains why I lost my Cure father so quickly...as long as DJ has his Blueberry male, he's a happy camper...he said that plant is 12 years old now...what a plant he must be...instantly makes any other strain more interesting...reminds me of the Black Widow male Shanti has and the Afghan Hawaiian male he gifted Soma...killer males are worth the hunt...that's what I'm after...please God give me one killer male and I will never ask for anything ever again...I promise...some lovely pics you got there...please post more...when I have some DJ genetics to post up, I'm definitely going to post some pics in this thread...I have to admit I'm also tempted by his Vanilluna...he speaks highly of her too...talks about how creamy and consistent she is...it seems like he's really impressed with that plant...I don't know if that makes sense...toying around in the blue lines must be so much fun...at some point I'm going to have to try to grow more of his strains...crossing them with Shanti's work sounds like way too much fu-king fun...thanks again for your support...all the best...jay:D

USB Digital Microscopes

Amen :)

30x hand-lenses: http://www.indigo.com/magnify/gphmgnfy/triplet-geology-lens.html
Which prompts me to ask; Is 30x REALLY necessary? I've used these before, and as the page says, they have a limited depth of field (to put it mildly) and are bloody hard to use IMO. I guess I'll start a topic on this actually...

No...I suppose it's not really necessary...but it is what he recommends...it's funny...I used to have one of those things when I was a child...great little toy if I do say so myself...at the class they were playing with magnifiers that plug directly into your laptop...the cheaper version was something like $50, and the expensive version was only $90...it might even be able to take pictures...they were putting Blueberry grown using LEDs under the microscope...I believe they are available at places like Radio Shack, Best Buy, and Fry's Electronics...really easy and simple to use...thanks for reminding me...forgot to put that in my notes...later...jay:)

The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan

DJ also mentioned a book called The Botany of Desire...as luck would have it, I'd just watched the pbs special only days before...it examines the history of four plants...the apple, the potato, cannabis, and the tulip...I found it so enlightening I had to record it...there's an apple breeder somewhere up in New Hampshire that's growing antique apples...rare tulip bulbs used to be worth NY 5th Avenue apartments...potatoes and cannabis both have interesting histories as well...;)

The Botany of Desire
http://www.pbs.org/thebotanyofdesire/

On Cannabis

"This plant has opened up this very fruitful path of inquiry into understanding
how memory works, how consciousness works, how emotion works. We have
unlocked this whole mechanism which we didn't know existed, and we would
not know it existed if not for this plant."

"Marijuana seems to have made an evolutionary decision long ago that it was
going to throw it's lot in with human beings."

"Strange as it may seem, cannabis growers are part of a very long tradition."

"Cannabis proposes this idea of time stopping, of being able to explore the
present moment. Forget the past, forget the future, just be there and see
what you can come up with."

"They are the best gardeners of my generation, I realized at a certain point.
The best gardeners of my generation are not hybridizing roses, are not working
with orchids. They're working with this incredibly valuable, incredibly interesting
plant called cannabis."

"The way I see plants, they're just as advanced as we are from an evolutionary
point of view. While we were working on consciousness, language, toolmaking--
all these things we judge to be so wonderful and important--they were working
on different tools, and their tools are just as sophisticated as ours."

"The fact that this plant--cannabis for example--can actually change the texture
of consciousness. This is ingenious."

"We would not be the same if not for cannabis, and cannabis certainly is very
different for it's relationship with us. It's one of the great winners in this dance of
domestication."

jaybutta... is there anyway to ask another question... Where is the Afghani line with all the stink that DJ used?

On another note.. smoked some Rose out of Eugene last week.. very distinct flavor, not bad on the stone either.

I watched the pbs special a while back, I have to agree that it was excellent.

On the topic of the handheld loupes, I have a 15x just like http://www.indigo.com/magnify/gphmgnfy/triplet-geology-lens.html. I think mine was labelled sunlight supply, and was a little cheaper, but it looks very similar. When I took out the 15x and the 30x in the store I did not notice a 2x distance in magnification, it seemed less. On that link it says the 20 and 30x have a more limited depth of field. I liked the working distance of the 15x much more, you didn't have to get so close to what you are looking at so as to touch it. Not only does it allow you to look at trichomes and other parts of the plant close up, it make identifying pests and infestations much easier. Some bugs are so small you cannot see them with the naked eye, carefully scanning with a loupe is the easiest way.

The ones that light up from radioshack, the pocket microscopes, are probably more useful for determining trichome maturity. Basically you want to pull off a little piece and put it under the small pocket microscopes. Same with the cheap video microscopes. They are more useful for examining finished bud or test samples. But with a loupe you can examine the plants in place, and get in close and look at the dirt.

I would recommend every grower have a 15x loupe, I use mine all the time, I couldn't imagine not having one. It would also be useful to have a higher magnification pocket microscope with an LED light, but they are different tools and have different uses.

You could probably use the loupe with glasses, because you can hold the loupe right next to what you are examining and have your eye a foot or more away from it, and it still works well. You don't have to stick your face right in the eye piece. I don't know if the illuminated pocket scopes would work so well with glasses.

Thanks for the reply SmokeOn, that's what I wanted to know. I've not used any magnification on cannabis yet, so have no idea how big the trichomes are and what was needed to see them.
