Ortega pt II

Just start spraying every 3-5 days after you bring ANYTHING in and make sure that you have something. that works. Keep spraying for 3 weeks. I know to do this with peppers. Weed plants aren't so bad, but I had the mother of all aphid infestations that started from bringing some Iranian/Persian basil plants, of all things, inside to finish making seed. They are just such an intensely fragrant plant that I wouldn't have expected it. I've never had that much trouble with anything besides earwigs and slugs with weed plants though. Frankly for long term, TC seems the obvious way to go.

I think mites be ubiquitous to the weed plant.

You should try the lavender thing. Just saying...

Ortega, what a lovely strain I grew outside in North Wales a decade ago. Fat and Squatty plants and a couple of phenos from the get go. I still have an image or two kicking around and can remember one of my images was used to advertise the strain on another seed bank site.
I'm looking forward to growing some again along with another strain for neuropathic pain. Your system looks really neat and tidy may I say. I've only just got back after almost losing my mind on Lyrica and have acquired a XL Homebox Ambient and 600 watt LED. I've got a couple of Oxypots and am going to aquire another two. Maybe I'll fire up a Jugbubbler too. Wishing you All The Best,
JKP
Bore da mate 👍
I've got relatives on the mid west coast near Aberaeron, and I spent many days yonks ago fishing up north.....Bala and Trawsfynnydd. Beautiful part of the country mate ✌️

It's a shame you couldn't keep them going mate, those Ortega flowers looked amazing 👍
You did nearly make me spray my cup of tea everywhere when you said 'It smelt fruity and skunky, but now it smells like meat and shit!'
F#ckin hell mate that was funny 😆✌️
I must say I bought some Ortega seeds and all the grow reports leave me gasping to try it.....I've never tried any Mr Nice produce, ever, I'm sorry to say 👀

yes those plants were apparently of the 'cured lunch meat, gone high' variety apparently lol. i just returned to this thread today and liked all the responses : )

ran a crop between then and now of jordan of the islands seeds and learned the valuable lesson of planting in numbers and now i am back with the mns gear. 13 seeds (actually 12. had a dampening off on an mks seed), 7 nl5 skunk and 5 master kush skunk

the joti grow had wild variation, and only one plant worthy of keeping. planting 13 seeds (the max the rubbermaid tote will allow) really put things into perspective. out of the romulan x hot rod and afghani there was an outlier in each strain quite noticeable as seedlings by the stem rub and terpenes, and the keeper was the aghani

the romulan x hot rod plants had a racy high and headachy lingering burnout and two had nasty meaty poopy terps. the outlier, which bouquet dominated the grow of sweetened condensed milk, grew ultra fast and produced as much as all other plants combined and finished the fastest at six and a half weeks, but the high was racy and left a burnout

but the keeper afghani was the goldy locks plant for effects. warm come up, long enjoyable high, then dissolves with no burnout. takes two hits rather than the usual one hit and the plant grows very slow, like all the others save the producer.

so will see if i can find an msn plant to replace the afghani. they all seem to be outgrowing the joti plants that is for sure (save the producer/outlier)

i notice 4 of the nl5 skunk are perfect looking and 3 are variegated with deformity. only two of them have noticeable stem/petiole rubs and although subtle they are quite nice, both from the perfect looking plants. keeping my eye on these

the mks are a week or so behind, and the large plant is the afghani (when i discovered high nitrogen fertilizer again lol). will add the high n pellets to the rest of the crop and future crops. actually will just mix the 4-4-8 and the 7-3-3 pellets 50/50 going forward

not to start another grow journal though, will probably just check back in or start a new thread after harvest with some pics and a report when i have smoked and made a selection

as for those other afghani plants only the one that was similar to the keeper would have been worth keeping but it also had burnout. two had nose burning paint/vinegar smell and minimal thc, one of which had almost no crystals the other nanners. and another was low thc/terps also

the keeper had pine smell stem and petiole rub in veg, most crystal coverage in the garden and smelled of orange soda in flower, and finished last at 60 days. now a few weeks after chop the resin is pine with orange ju-jubs. smoking in a joint is not flavourful but i rarely find weed that does have flavour when smoked at the price i pay for weed legally. i vape anyway so all weed is tasty

and the keeper was by far an outlier from seedling stage along with that one rom x hot rod. the terps/stem rubs were beyond anything else in the garden. i can not go back to just planting a couple seeds

still it grows so slow, so on with the search of a next keeper with this mns run

those two variegated NL5S plants look really cool. the shorter one is a standout for stem rub with sweetened condensed milk and a hint of fruit. another standout NL5S smells of cat pee with a classic tangy stem rub that i know from way back (is this from thai?)

the uniformity and vigour of everything is quite nice especially for three year old seeds. still waiting for the MKS to catch up, again very uniform and healthy plants

only one female out of seven nl5 skunk. the healthiest most perfect plants were male. some nice grape terps on a few also. the remaining plant is the fastest growing in the garden, variegated and has subtle but nice stem rubs. fruity spicy and mild urinal puck

out of five mks i got two females, and possibly a third but it was growing so slow i cut it before any preflowers. more spicy kind of stem rub on the mks

i threw away a bunch of seeds last spring with my ravine grow attempt (they sprouted but days later a literal monsoon washed everything away) and have only tried one nl5 skunk plant before this one so will have to re-up and give it a proper go. maybe will have to do the same with the mks

It's a truly classic line @dankd. Which is perhaps unfairly a little forgotten about in these days of insta weed.. i'm smoking it as i type and i can honestly say that i love the effect. It isn't blisteringly potent, although i'm certain you could find such individuals in the line.

It's more the well balanced effect, being both mind and bodily effective for my needs..
The "original lines" offered by people like Mr nice seeds etc tend to have the effect i'm looking for, a smooth well meaning bliss.

Enjoy your grow.
Peace

thanks ray. i agree the thc numbers do not determine the quality of the effects

those were some nice plants you got from the nl5s btw. i think your grow may be what made me go back into these seeds after my planting in numbers epiphany. until i get back into some auctions i have another grow of eleven ortega and two mks seeds

also, i believe i am looking for the weed i smoked growing up in southern ontario in the early 90's which was mostly northern lights and skunk. i don't remember any of it per se since it was always changing but it was everywhere

i remember that was the official check if the weed you were buying was going to get you high. how deep was the skunk smell in a bag. not that there weren't any other types of weed actually the variation was wild back then. definitely star anise weed was always good, and northern lights if i recall was mothballs

then there is the fabled m39 commercial regs which were everywhere in ontario (and quebec apparently) in the late 90's early 00's which is supposedly a cross between northern lights and skunk which i won't go into other than scotch tape and mothballs and no skunk at all

that was very much gang weed so to speak. hells angels, chinese and vietnamese. no odour or any hint of skunk

but ya, berries... always good back in the day hopefully will find some with the mns gear

day two of flower today. nl5sk top right corner had a reaction to a supercrop/fertilizer one two punch or something, and has curled tips at a few nodes but no tissue damage and now coming out of it. seems to be a light feeder(?)

the bottom middle mkssk also had a bit of leaf curl after the supercropping and the tips stayed perfect as well

also i broke three top branches off of that mks trying to supercrop lol. it would have filled out the empty space. maybe will stick to lst for now

a mix of smells so far. the mkssk has these random unexpected wifs of spicy old school herb. mkssk1 (bottom left), joti afghani (top left), nl5sk (top right), mkssk2 (bottom middle)

i turned off the hps a few days ago and added the other two (of four) led bars. currently at 80% but will probably go to max soon

the problems i used to have with leds in winter are solved by running a space heater 24/7 in the grow space. i was going to flower with the hps + 2 bars led but when i saw the canopy temp at 30c i knew i had to switch to 100% led. i realize now under led the canopy has to be in that higher temp range with no cold breaks/nights

hid leaf/bud temps are higher so 30c with the hps would mean loss of potency. as opposed to lower leaf/bud temps and canopy temps a bit lower as well at 27-29c with just led, which means the cannabinoids are safe

also, i added 1/4 teaspoon of gypsum powder to a watering for the first time a few days ago and things are looking good now. will see what effect it has in future as i plan to premix with it for a grow also. even though the nl5sk still has curled (yet healthy) tips, it is praying for the first time in a while now too. i learned about gypsum in reading up on leds in the grow forums, actually this one also

on second thought, instead of having the lights at 80% and increasing to max, i now have them at 50% and will be increasing to 60 something percent by end of flower

just got the photone app and it turns out at 80% intensity, the top of the canopy was getting 1200 µmol/m2/s(!) come to find out indoor cannabis without added co2 should be getting 800-900 max and only in late flower

it's at about 750 now with about 33 dli (still need to find out what much of this means)

glad to have found this out now. can't believe i actually need to have the lights at 2/3 brightness of what i had them at(!)

@dankd I only turn my Spider Farmer farmer to 75%, max. Reviews said the same thing about my light, only turn it to 100% of you are supplementing with C02.
this is one of those today years old things for me. happy to have joined the enlightened haha (pun)

edit: with the canopy two feet from the lights i found the ppfd to be 750 when set to 50% and 900 when set to 60%. so from now on will stay within that range for the whole grow, only going to 60% towards late flower, then dropping back down again for the last two weeks
