Chana looking wonderful in here, happy to hear your enjoying the NL5xhaze. I bet you find a heavy thai pheno because I got one and she is gonna be 12-14 weeks before finished. It actually #1 and I'll post a new pic of her soon, I notice that it will keep stretching and stacking and it seems like at least on my plant that the buds finish from the bottom up, meaning I feel like i can harvest some bottom buds while the tops fill out. Please keep us updated on your hard work chana!

Hi Gratphul4thc, you made it through... respect man. I appreciate your help on my grow a few weeks ago re: stretch... you helped me time it perfect, for my space... thank you brother, another reason why our community is the best... sombady 99.9% of the time, has already made it happen... a few weeks behind your blooming phase and eager to virtually smoking one with you... thanks for posting up your grow and looking forward to your thoughts on the smoke... but before that still marveling at that bud you entered in this months bud contest...

Blessing on the good vibes my friend,

CM

Hi chana,
excellent start of what should be great smoke.
I have some of these OTW and am anxious to start them too.
there is no skunk in this seed so it holds a lot of smoking and maybe breeding potential.
before I placed my order ,I ask Shanti specific about his new
NL5 Hybrids.
question;
"Out of the new NL5 selection hybrids, which one pleased you the most?"
reply;
" NL5xHazeC is the best for me to date."
For me that was all I needed to hear.

good luck
and
keep it green

Hi Scorpion,

Seems the cat is out of the bag eh? Haze C...

Well then who ever has this strain is going to be recreating a past era, and for us, it is the ganja lotto!

For the life of me, I can not find the pedigree on Norther Lights #5 (neat)? Is there no skunk in the orginal cut?

Well it is great to hear they are enroute... I hope they arrive undisturbed and ready to be grown by a person that has tasted NL5HzC from the 90's...

Do you plan on running a journal? I am already subscribed if you do...

Respect for taking some time to post the great news...

CM

P.S. Your SSH cutt is crazy...

hi chana,
I don't think I have ever seen the make up or pedigree of Northern Lights,
Nevil has given us several bits of information on some of his key plants in the
Afghan thread ,
but as far as skunk being in the make up of Northern Lights 5
I have never heard of that from anyone.
I have heard that Thai may have been part of the original clone,
but I think Nevil used his own clone from his selection and dubbed it NL#5 which is the crazy ass photo on the back cover of his vintage Seed Bank catalog.
This NL5 Plant used now might be from NL seed that was made by Nevil's #5clone and a fine NL1 or NL2 type male.

If I get a plant that is similar to my old NL5Haze,then I will crow about it for sure,
but it really is not likely to be the same since we are comparing four different plants from what I had then and what we have now.
all my Haze plants then, were to the A male ,
and now all are to the C male.

Ya Mon!

Hi again brother S,

Thank you man. I appreciate your information on the pedigree of the NL5. It has got me stumped too, but I will take your word that there is no Skunk in NL5 orginal cutt.

My male pheno E looks very skunk in stature, but it just my limited experinece to place the comparison.

Though having Haze C as you stated is really exciting and I can concur, along with Gratphul4thc that we both got a HzC dom in the pack!

Well, just saying, but what if the current NL5hz does taste like you remembered? Now wouldn't that be a treat! and all of us that never had the chance to taste her can be shared by many! I think this would be great!

Big ups my brother,

CM

Whats up brother,

@ Canna and Burb no one responded as to the pedigree of NL5? Got to be some skunk it there...

Thanks for your thought and for sharing...

CM

You could be on the same path as me as far as tracing the skunk trait goes.

This really screwed me up when I heard it and I wish I could remember where I read it:

"True Skunk is fruity, not skunky. The skunky smell actually comes from Afghani."

This holds true in my garden. My NL5 pheno is the only skunky plant in the lot. My Sk pheno's indeed smell fruity.

Peace.

Thanks Chana,

The plants are looking great! I will be following the progress on these pretty puppies for sure.

About the Haze, I think I read Nevil saying on one of these threads, that he thought haze was predominantly Thai, but also had Oaxacan, and Columbian. He was skeptical about it having Indian in it.

But in the end we can only speculate, and to me, it reminds me of the Thai stick I used to get when i was a kid.

those babies look big and healthy, nice man.
Thanks again for the update.

No man ,No Ruderalis in this NL5 x HazeC hybrid from Shantibaba.
unless I have misunderstood you're post.
I think that it best in the future if you want to say Nevil Said,
you should include the Complete Quote from when he said it.

sorry for that, here the quote.

I did a series of back crosses with NL5, HP and G13. I did this because I didn't have siblings to use. NL5 was a sport. The brothers couldn't deliver.
I used a Ruderalis for the NL5, picking the male carrying the R factor, which gave pollen at the fourth internode. Four generations a year. The 5th generation, ulimately was the best. I should have gone brother to sister at that point, but I thought it would continue to get better. I went to 8 backcrosses. What I learned was that after gen 4, the results were more dependant on the individual male, than the number of back crosses.
I used NL1 males for the HP and NL2 males for the G13. None of the back crosses ever produced a plant as good as the mother, although the NL5 came closest. Vigour was lost in all cases.

thank you blackberry,
That saddens me to think I have ruderalis genectics in seeds I have just purchased.
had I known this ,I would have passed on them...
well let's see what the other growers say when they do a smoke test of their plants.
Ruderalis

well it's a rudi that nevil selected and breed out, so i think it's not that a problem...
and if you really mad about the seeds you could just dump them in my yard:D

it's all good,'m not mad just not well informed these days.

Hi Blackberry and Scorpion,

I am fairly certain that Nevil stated on one of his posts that he recieved NL5 as a cutting from a guy known as the Indian.

I think what Nevil is saying in Blackberry's quote is that he did a backcross using NL5 female and Ruderalis male, not that he created NL5 with a ruderalis. There is no ruderalis in NL5

I believe Shanti still keeps a pristine clone descendant of the original NL5 cut that Nevil originally got from the Indian.

did a backcross using NL5 female and Ruderalis male.... There is no ruderalis in NL5

there was none till the bx, info passes on recessivly or dominantly, mathematically its in there

i know u can hold a mother for real long time, but ive seen too often gentic drift within a time, its no option imho to keep gens in their living form (someday the dna info will tell its time to die, thats life), u need to store em for future, im sure we all know that too well, i doubt any of those famed old cutz could be possible alive

No need to fear Bro,

I found the quote from Nevil:

I met the Indian to obtain the US NL5 cutting two years after getting the seeds. This was the only NL cutting that I ever got. If I ever sold seeds from this US cut, it wasn't for long. It was already superseded before it got it.

Well I'm not sure to tell you the truth, but Nevil has told me that he still has the original NL5XHz cut, so maybe thats where Shanti got these seeds from but I don't think so.

I know Shanti still has the original HzC male, and I think he still has the original NL5 as well. I am guessing thats how shanti made them.

Its only about 25 years or so, that is pushing it a bit for a clone line but... Not at all inconceivable.

These phenotypes look considerably more indica than my original NL5hz cut from over 20 years ago, and they have a shorter budding cycle. Maybe that has something to do with "genetic drift". Who knows?

the seattle story goes like this: ghani n thai

now, do you know any ghani fast as nl, or even a cross with thai in it, tho only in small amounts

its too fast for my indica expirience, tho i know for some 35 day finisher hmmm, its somehow an exeption to the ghani expiriences ive encountered

genetic drifts resulted within mothers in different forms and variations, some beeing change of aromas, declining potency, "must flower" impulse, hermies, cell "sqlerosis" and some more, earliest drifts starting at 4 or 5 years of age
ganjas evolution is still perdomenantly based on a 1 year cycle

would be intresting to ask the crowd here, whats their expiriences with old plant stock :)

But what makes you sure Shanti used the NL5 from Nevils backcrossing experiment?

The Haze C male apparently seems to be doing OK.

OK Deran,
I'll start with you:
What is your experience with old stock?
What is the oldest stock you have dealt with?
What changes did you notice, generationally?

the oldest clone stock I have ever dealt with is 6 years.

I noticed some changes from the earlier generations: Slightly faster budding cycle, the leaves were getting kind of like a wavy effect. Slightly more potent. I was worried about the leaves going wavy. But it was never much of a problem. I lost the clone cause I had to shut down unexpectidly.
It was NL5hz coincedentally. Good thing I had made a bunch of seeds. I noticed that the wavy leaf effect was passed on to sexually produced progeny as a recessive trait.
