But what makes you sure Shanti used the NL5 from Nevils backcrossing experiment?

The Haze C male apparently seems to be doing OK.
Yes Mark,
this is the question I ask too,
I would think that EVEN IF NL#5 x NL#1 or NL#5 x NL#2 were not of the quality Nevil wanted
they still would be pure Northern Lights and not of some NL x Rudi hybrid back cross
and 5x2 was sold in the catalog , I have heard is was very good weed.
also Nevil sold many pure NL1 seeds, which female did he use? NL#5 is my guess.

Hey Scorp,
That must be the cross Nevil was referring to.

I can tell you one thing, Shanti and Nevil are both real sticklers when it comes to pedigree.

We would know if the new 5hz from Shanti had Ruderalis in it, because Shanti wouldn't even be selling it as 5hz, he would be selling it as 5hzRudiralis or some shit like that.

Well all I know for sure is what Shanti told me and he said it was the best of the three new NL5 hybrids and Shantibaba's word is good enough for me.
as far as the Original clone,Ya think it's safe to say it's long dead?
if not, then why re-select a new NL#5 from old seed?

hi all
hi Chana ,

great thread and documentation of your grow, the plants look really beautiful
I 'm sure you will find something worthwhile to keep for a long time
cant wait to see how they will explode in the next weeks. They seem they will yield great too.
thanks for the updates

On the Northern Lights..
1984 - Nev gets NL1-8 seeds from the US. From the NL5 seeds he finds only a unique plant , his NL5 female clone. This is the 84 Holland NL5 cut.
1986 - Couple years after getting the NL5 seeds, Nev travels back to the US to pick up the 'US NL5 clone'. According to him the US clone was not as good as his own Holland NL5 clone..
2007 - Shanti did a 'new NL5 selection' using 1988 seedstock from Nevil.
I believe these seeds were made by Nev with his NL5 Holland clone and Ruderalis male..and were at F4 stage as Batman said based on info from Shanti.

So there basically are 3 NL5 clones , the US NL5 clone , Nev's Holland '84 NL5(daughter of US NL5) and the new NL5 selection from Shanti , from Nev's seeds he made after working with the Holland NL5 clone and Ruderalis male.

Thought you may like to know I have just germinated some stock seed from 1988 where the original Northern lights 5 originated from...and got an excellent germination rate to date about 55 germinated from 80 seeds after 2 days.

Here is hoping we can find something of interest for you all....take care all the best Sb"

From:https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=1137196&postcount=24

The NL 1-8 were seed lines and most were hybrids. A couple of years after getting the seed, I went to the U.S. to get the U.S. NL5 cutting. It didn't turn out to be as good or even that similar to my NL5.
When I first got the NL varieties, there were 8 types, 1-8.They came with descriptions, which I published in my catalogue. These descriptions may not correlate with what later developed. The original intention was to purchase seeds from the US NL growers. It didn't work out and supply dried up. I kept the lines separate and inbred them. NL1 and NL2 stabilised into distinct types and NL5 only produced one unique individual.

Hi Nev
So if the original NL5 wasn't that great, where did yours come from? Did you have some NL5 seeds and picked the best plant from those?
Mine were from that plant (US NL5) and all of the brothers and sisters seemed typical of the line, except one. I expect it was a throwback. It's hard to glean information about breeding from underground sources, but I can assure you that I've spent a lot of time analysing the results of the original NL lines. My NL5 seemed to have characteristics of NL2 and NL1, but had completely dropped any Thai influence from the mother. If you have bred enough plants containing indica, you will have seen some of these throwback indicas. They are not all great, but the short indica like 8 week anomaly will pop up.

Nev did mention that his Holland NL5 female clone seemed to have characteristics of NL2 and NL1 but father is unknown really. The mother is the US NL5 clone but the father was uknown according to Nev, thats why he used an X at the Holland NL5 clone father's side , in his Pedigree for NH in the Grail chart he had posted. He didn't know what exact male the US NL growers used.

Something interesting is that Nev mentioned in his NH pedigree he used in his Grail chart the Holland NL5 clone he found dates back to 1984 : https://www.mrnice.nl/forum/58203-post141.html
But Shanti said the seedstock the original NL5 originated from were from 1988..

When I had first read Shanti's post I believed both Nev and Shanti here refer to the original NL5 Nev had found in Holland(daughter of US NL5 clone). So was bit confused with the different 84 and 88 dates..
But after seeing what Batman posted , that the NL5 female Nev used in the NL5HzC were at F4 stage, I believe the '88 stock is the NL5 with rudy that Nev had made:
Is it true that the NL5 x Haze C seedlot was at F4?
the mother was an F4.
i got the information from shantibaba

Nev had said he kept the NL1-8 lines separately and inbred them also..But that was not the case with NL5 as it produced only one good plant. Same info bellow:
I did a series of back crosses with NL5, HP and G13. I did this because I didn't have siblings to use. NL5 was a sport. The brothers couldn't deliver.
I used a Ruderalis for the NL5, picking the male carrying the R factor, which gave pollen at the fourth internode. Four generations a year. The 5th generation, ulimately was the best. I should have gone brother to sister at that point, but I thought it would continue to get better. I went to 8 backcrosses. What I learned was that after gen 4, the results were more dependant on the individual male, than the number of back crosses.
I used NL1 males for the HP and NL2 males for the G13. None of the back crosses ever produced a plant as good as the mother, although the NL5 came closest. Vigour was lost in all cases.
N.

Nev worked with his Holland NL5 '84 clone that he had found in his NL5 seeds he got from the US, and worked it with Rudy and imo considering Batmans info the '88 stock shantibaba germinated, are these and at F4 stage. Afterall if Shanti had germinated the US seedstock that Nev found his NL5 Holland clone , the seedstock would be labeled '84 and not '88..

Plus this makes more sense and the results from that 88 F4 NL5 stock from Nev should produce plants closer to the mother, the Holland NL5 clone Nev found in his US NL5 seeds..especially considering the fact that the NL5 clone Nev had found was a unique pheno and not typical plant from those US NL5 seeds. So I believe that all info so far shows the stock Shanti used for his new NL5 selection was different than the seed stock(from USA) that Nev had initially used to find the original NL5 Holland 84 clone in. I believe Batman is right and that the new NL5 coming from the work Nev did with his clone and a Rudy male..Considering Nevs work and skills I expect the results from the new NL5 from the selection Shanti did should be quite close to the NL5 Holland clone mum..making the new NL5HzC the closest thing to the NL5HzCof the 90s Nev used to offer through the SeedBank and Sensi..

some of my NL5xAfg went 70days so I find it very hard to believe there is Rudy in the NL5 selection...these gals flowered for quite some time for an indica f-1 so my conjecture is the Rudy is not in the selection as the plants would have finished much faster...i know some Affies can go 10wks so its a bit of a long flower for a Indica cross but still Rudy would have brought that time down in a pure indica hybrid without a doubt in my view...Shanti stated recently him and Nev spoke of a database with pedigree's, even more specific than that already available on the strain section of the site

Well I stand corrected. Thanks for clarifying L33t.

So to clarify even further:

This means that the original 89-90 NL5Hz from the Seedbank also has Ruderalis in it, correct?

That is so hard for me to digest.

But it might explain a lot actually, as to why my strains tend to show sex after around the 7th leafset in vegetative, particularly on 24hrs, and why the females tend to show before the males. That is very interesting. I never had any clue that my NL5Hz has a lineage with ruderalis.

Well I know one thing, I have never had any autoflowering issues, ever. Not even once. One of my best lines comes from an F1 hybrid that was 50% NL5Hz and had a 25 day budding cycle, it was a total fluke, because the rest of the F1 seed from this cross was quite uniform having an average budding cycle of around 65-75 days on average.

well,i don't have the real answer (probably only nevil do) but i think your 5hz come from the original nl5 holland cut.
i guess nevil see similarities in the nl5 and in his rudi so he used it for the backcrosses.
if you think about it, the rudi should have been more similar than the others NLs or nevil would have used one of the others...

Hi josh,

Well I stand corrected. Thanks for clarifying L33t.
well I 'm only expressing my opinion based on the info posted so far, I can't say for sure as only Shanti and Nev really know what the '88 stock Shanti germinated really is.But the seedstock from the US, that Nevil's original NL holland cut came from was from '84 according to him, not '88. So if the '84 and '88 dates posted by Nev and Shanti respectively are accurate..we are talking about different seedstock..

This means that the original 89-90 NL5Hz from the Seedbank also has Ruderalis in it, correct?
like blackberry I too believe the NL5HzC Nev used to offer through the SeedBank and Sensi back in the day were using the original '84 Holland NL5 female , which is also used in the NL5HzA , mother of NH according to Nev.This '84 Holland NL5 female is what most people are familiar with when it comes to NL5 genetics from Nevil.According to Nev the US NL5 was not used much or for long as it was not as good as the daughter..

hi godislove,

Nev always picked the fast sexing male plants in his NL5 Ruderalis project when he did the backcrosses to the NL5 mom so I expect the resulting hybrids plants from the new NL5 selection from Shanti to be similar in flowering times compared to the fast original NL5 female mother which was an 8weeker if not mistaken. The ruderalis content becomes minimal (under 5%) after the 4th backcross to the NL5..but the plants from this line will not all be nessesarily exactly the same as the clone (mom)..I mean maybe some slightly slower plenos pop up from the NL5 ancestry or from the genetic combination with the Afghani Shanti used.Plus a lot of factors are responsible for the flowering times in plants..making it hard to draw real conclusions based only on this.

Nev went up to 8 backX's with that NL5Ruderalis breeding project, but Batman said that according to Shanti the NL5 mother in the new NL5HzC offering was at F4 stage.Maybe Nev suggested that specific stock from that breeding stage to Shanti to look for a new NL5 replacement..this would also make sense considering what Nev said about the end results being more dependant on the idividual male after gen 4, than the number of back crosses..and about the generation 5 ultimately being the best..Anyway whatever exactly the new NL5 selection really is I 'm pretty sure Shanti found something worthy from Nevs old seeds that holds up to the rest of the top lines..otherwise he wouldn't have been offering these..

this last post was pretty informative...if he in fact used a rudi, he undoubtedly only used it the one time. then crossed the offspring back to the nl5 and continued to do so until the plants resembled the original nl5. I presume the rudi he used would have been very recessive to begin with.

Come to think of it, this is a brilliant idea because he would shorten the flowering cycle some and pass on mostly nl5 genes. So what you would be left with would not bear any resemblance to a rudi.

Of course, this is all speculation.

Hi all,
Very interesting read.
Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
YS

Diddo here, thank you Blackberry and of course the original L33T, thanking you taking the time to post up solid information. Respect!

Hopefully after Gratphul and I finish this out, Mr. Baba will enlighten us with his selection pedigree officially...

Great info added so far... hats are off to you guys.

As to Rudi being used in the F4 gen, I am cool with that... Nev has yet to steer us wrong, and I am sure if it is Rudi as descried above, I am going to agree with Longhorn, as what better way to speed up blooming times, especially for the indoor growers...

I am going to get some of this bud out there to the community... maybe a few of our Sr Members who know what original NL5Hz smoked and tasted like, can do a smoke report for us all.

Good morning,

CM

I was under the impression that the F4 Batman was referring to was a "NL5xHz F4", witch mothered ssh... that makes sense, for a strain that is 'professionally bred', to use P1's from an inbred line to create an F1 strain..
Having grown 2 strains mothered by the new NL5, I'm also 99.99% sure the new NL5 selection has no rudy in there.. I'm thinking along the same lines as scorpion here...;)
If nev wanted to preserve the NL5, would he have stood a good chance finding it again in a F1 of 5x1 or 5x2???
good luck with these Chana Masala

hi billy,

"...
Hz C male produced 5Hz1 which won a Cup or 2, this was a daughter of NL5 which won a cup. 5Hz1 when crossed with Sk1x HzC produced Silver Haze which won a Cup. Ben renamed it Jack Herrer. Somebody else renamed it Diesel. 5HzC X Sk1Hz C was not as good as 5Hz1. Mango Haze (5Hz122)is a full sister to 5Hz1 and these two were the best out of tens of thousands.
Haze A produced 5HzA2 (5A2) and was featured on the cover of the 1990 catalogue and is the mother of Nevil's Haze, the father being HzC."

"Northern Lights 5 crossed with Haze male C. Is the best Indica / Sativa hybrid that I've ever done. HzA male to NL5 was also excellent and was the mother of N.H.
...."
From the info posted that I ve read so far the mother of SSH is NL5HzC1-which is a F1 hybrid , a cross between NL5 and HazeC male....unless there is some info that has been posted from Nev or Shanti that shows otherwise..
Nev said the NL5 was the mother of NL5HzC1 and NL5HzC122(full sister to NL5HzC1) , so that also means the NL5HzC is not an inbred line.
..If they were..Nev would have not said that NL5HzC1 was a daughter of NL5. It would have been a NL5Hz daughter instead...

From the NH pedigree in the Chart for Grail that Nev posted its seen that NL5HzA (mother of NH) is also a F1 cross between NL5 female and HazeC male.

Maybe Batman can chime in and help a bit , clarify what exact mother Shanti was refering to..

That would be helpfull as he recieved the info in pm from shanti... and told GitT in pm.. I believe..
I would make sence to me at least, if nev worked NL5xHz a few generations to find the mother of SSH... this industry hey??? LOL
I'm sure the NL5xHZC seeds that were sold from the Seed Bank were F1's...
At this stage though, only shanti nev and batman know the truth... LOL
when I get some batteries I'll get pics of my NL5(new)xHzC.. she IS gorgeous I tell you... simply gorgeous.... and only a few weeks off...
peace all

OK Deran,
I'll start with you:
What is your experience with old stock?
What is the oldest stock you have dealt with?
What changes did you notice, generationally?

the oldest clone stock I have ever dealt with is 6 years.

I noticed some changes from the earlier generations: Slightly faster budding cycle, the leaves were getting kind of like a wavy effect. Slightly more potent. I was worried about the leaves going wavy. But it was never much of a problem. I lost the clone cause I had to shut down unexpectidly.
It was NL5hz coincedentally. Good thing I had made a bunch of seeds. I noticed that the wavy leaf effect was passed on to sexually produced progeny as a recessive trait.

11 or 12 years old, that particular cut is the one with potency degradation, tho nothing else seemed to change, maybe the haze smell aint so pronounced as it was when i met that clone 7 years ago (haze hybrid), other changes in different stocks i worte down up there, what ive observed, and its not only my observation, others see that too, thats also a reason i write it down, never forget the - dumb me factor - ;)
its hard to judge generationally, keep the mothers outside the flowering chamber for a year and try it out again was my motto, not bc of determination of the gens, more just bc i was bored with the same genetics over n over again, then suddenly you bloom out those cuts and ask urself hmmm that was stronger last time i smoked it, tho a lot of time passed by inbetween enjoyments .. it should be the other way round, like with cured buds imho

another cut wanted to bloom, no matter what i did, 24 hours of light, taking cuts ... much nitrogen, grow stimulants .... for me it was clear, that this dna info told the plant its over, only after 5 years , i say only bc i lived in the assumption, that plants could be hold for ever ... as you can read sometimes somewhere .. and those storys of old mothers (parental stock), it could be true, but with such expiriences it makes me wonder, if u need to select a particular cut without those time limiting factors, and that made me again think ... how many seeds are necessary to find an unlimited time dna info plant ...

too many questions open, which collide with my expiriences, tho im not saying its impossible
