Mango Haze: Selection In Small Spaces

Hi, Dawn. Welcome to my thread and thanks for stopping by. I've enjoyed your posts since I've been here.

Thank you for the kind words but I have to admit that my sprouting process is far from perfect. I have some pretty good cloning experience and I treated the seedlings the way that I treat clones and it was too strong. I had some yellowing shortly after that feed so I watered the RW cubes with plain, pH'ed water with about 30% runoff and they recovered nicely.

I hope my thread doesn't sound like I'm here to teach, I definitely need some advice here.:)

hi cannatari good luck your grow, those little baby plants will turn into monsters :)

Hi Cannatari-

Hope ya don't mind if I tag along as your thoughts and questions help me organize my breeding attempts. Keep up the good work..;)

Just checked the last update, nice growth

Thank you, 50 CENT.

hi cannatari good luck your grow, those little baby plants will turn into monsters :)

Thanks, Billy.

Wow, glad to hear they recovered. Don't feel bad, I did the same thing. :o
Live and learn, right? ;)

LOL, I've since done the opposite and underfed them. Living and learning.

Good looking "ladies" here C.
I ll follow your thread, it s probably gonna be a great one.

See u.

Thanks maxibiogreen, nice to meet you.

Welcome to my thread and thank you for the compliment, SurfdOut.

Well, I have some very good news to report. One of the seedlings smells EXACTLY like mango fruit! While the rest of the seedlings have your typical vegetative/skunky smell, one plant stands alone with a distinct mango smell to it's vegetation. It's the one with the blue circle, duh:

So, does this mean that Selection In Small Spaces is complete?

I really had no idea that a mango pheno would distinguish itself so early. I cannot accept in my mind that one of these other plants will exceed this plant in mango expression or that this plant will somehow become less mango upon flowering. I'm half tempted to cull the other plants upon a female confirmation from this pheno but I will wait until I have a cured sample to make that decision. My goal from the beginning has been to find the 1 best plant. I prefer to flower only 2 plants of the same cut at a time in my area. I would rather rotate the MH with a second variety all together than with a 2nd place MH pheno so I may never even flower the other 15 plants. Crazy, but I'm that convinced. This plant is in a league of it's own. She makes all the other plants smell the same and nothing like mango.

So, here is my description of this plant:

Out of 16 plants, she is number 11 in height, having 5 plants taller than her.

Her leaf stems are about 60% purple. The other plants range from 100% to 0% purple on the leaf stem.

Her leaves are dark. The other plants are about 30% dark leaf and the rest are pale green.

The shape of her leaves is truly hybrid. Some of the other plants have wider leaves and some have narrower leaves. Height does not seem to coincide with leaf shape as some of the shortest plants have thin blades and some of the tall plants have wide leaves. The widest leaves amongst the stock belong to one of the short plants though.

This pheno is overall an excellent example of a true hybrid. It's neither tall nor short, it's leaves are neither wide nor thin, her coloration is in between all the other examples I have to compare her to as well. None of the other plants look like her at all.

So, as it stands, the selection process will be continued after a rotation of this pheno. This will put me 2 rotations ahead of my goal to use my flowering area exclusively for the best pheno than the standard selection process if the pheno is proven. If she is not proven then I have delayed the selection process by 1 rotation. I'm confident that this plant far surpasses a second choice for justifying the delay. I would not even consider postponing if I were to choose from the other 15 plants. This plant is that unique.

To keep the selection process moving, I will locate a tray of cuttings of the other 15 plants outside in a few weeks to sex them. I will then have females to choose from for the next rotation as an option. I am still curious about the other phenos but I'm also visualizing the outcome of a jar of each right next to each other, "resorting" to smoke the other pheno.

To conclude, I'm very happy about this discovery and satisfied with altering my procedure to accommodate the new information. I think it's a good experiment that can contribute some useful info. I still have several weeks to experience these plants before I follow through with it so it will be interesting to see if another plant reveals a unique quality in the mean time.

Advice, comments, questions and/or answers all welcome/appreciated.

MangoHaze is not just about the Mango! Depends on what you are looking for. Sexing will most probably bring you down to 4 plants. Don't you have space to flower 4 plants and having clones from each?

Would really recommend to flower all females.

Hello, nOpe. Thanks for stopping by.

I have room to flower 4 plants, I have been able to squeeze 6 in my flowering area at 1/ft2. A friend of mine recommends that I not place cuttings outside to sex them so I'm going to try flowering 8 plants and hopefully cull enough males so I can replace them with the remaining 8 plants and hopefully have everybody sexed before I run out of room.

I agree that it's not just about the mango and as these plants are starting to show some really nice aromas, it's becoming clearer to me that I'll be keeping 2 or 3 of these plants for a long time. I don't have to remove any of these plants from my garden until I need to make room for some new beans so I'm not in any hurry to chop these.

So, I will be flowering and preserving all of the females for quite some time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and advice, nOpe.

Hi Cannatari,

Looking excellent so far... I know it would be a guess, but I bet your pheno 11 is it, is male. But hey, I will wager a rolled joint of NH to you MH...

I just say Coop throw up a nice journal for his NHM.

Brother, please do not cull anything. I know you said due to space. Maybe it is time for a modest addition, hehehehehe...

Thanks for taking the time to post this log.

I am excited for you.

Cheers,

CM

Hello, Chana. Nice to meet you. Thanks for dropping in.

So...you want to try to spoil my good time with talk of a male plant? I'll take you up on your bet. You may be correct, but I won't pass up a chance to smoke your NH.:D

I was keeping my finger's X'd that a mango pheno male was less re-occurring than a female mango pheno. It seems like a mango male would be more rare than a mango female. I'm thinkin' that since SB's NL5HzA selection is Mango, maybe the trait occurs more often in the female but IDK how all that works. My logical mind is having trouble accepting that it's a 50-50 chance that a male plant will inherit his mother's traits more often than his sisters. Maybe I'm comparing plants to people. I do know that I'm thinking about it way too much. I'm excited and bored at the same time watching these baby's vegetate.:D

Cool my new friend and nice to meet you as well...

Didn't mean to wish the male seed keepers on you, sorry if it came out like that... just got excited for you, you wanting a special female and me reading Hazy Ladies reply in Billy's Sativa thread, and all this Hz male progeny testing with male and thinking, I am now hunting for future male specimens to keep until mary say it time to make seeds... alias as you patiently wait, I will be eager to see what happens....

You are on for the smoke my friend. In all good fun, thanks for sharing in your grow and let us all take part. This indeed will be a special cultivar in your collection.

I am not sure what the NL5Hz taste like, as I too have heard reports of mango in particular pheno's... wishing you all the best on what you would like to pull...

Take care,

Chana

Right on. I'm pretty much at the exact spot as you, trying to figure out whats a keeper and how to seed her, working with 9 Deadhead Og.

My pack of NL5xHz should be here in another day, cannot wait!

Bummer about the first 45, but things happen for a reason;)

Mmm...I really want that NL5Hz. I'm looking to knock up a MH with that and SkHz male. I have to make my selections before I have room for new beans and more selections.:(

How far are your D-Head's? I won't be flowering for about another 6 weeks yet so you might beat me.

Please share your NL5Hz grow when you're rollin'. I bet you're headed for lots of good times with that.

Hey Man-

How's your babies doing? Any new revelations?

I put my nine out to flower on Nov 25th. Been keeping notes on each one and reading alot.

Waiting for a better moon to start the NL5Hz.

Sup SurfdOut?

The ladies are doing "O.K.". I'm in the middle of moving and they are not to happy about the transition. I've been a little busy needless to say. They are all 8-14 inches tall now with pencil sized stalks that look like arrows. I'll get some pics up after I'm done with my relocation. Enjoy my drawing of what I'm working on in the mean time:

Hi Canna, nice design and graphics... you have a gift brother...

Is your design up for discussion?

Peace,

CM

do you guys know how big even a 50/50 haze plant can grow to by the end of flowering you will need the flowering space for 1 plant not 4 600wats for that small space for haze is over kill.
