Big Buddy,

I believe the only NL coming out is the NL5/Haze C x Skunk. From what I've read Shanti doesn't have the NL5 anymore(it passed). The seeds he dug up were the NL5 x Haze C that he had put away.

soo noo haze A in this new release

is this for sure ?

Hey bigherb :)
Thanks for swinging by, the only people who know what MNS has and does not have is MNS, although many speculate on such things regularly. It is indeed said that Haze A is no longer available, but at the same time hybrids of it are still around from my understanding. Shanti has laid out basic pedigree information on some of his more popular lines, however even that is not a true recipe as more of a rough outline.

From my understanding there is word of impending Northern Lights #5 hybrid releases here at MNS, and without question I feel this to be among the most significant releases in many years within the grow community.

NL5 x Haze 80
NL5 xAfghan 57
NL5x Skunk 57
NLx Haze/ Skunk 68

Dito that!
The A5 diesel rocks the boat, it even tips it over big time!!
Love to grow another crop of that killer herb.
Let's dream together bigherb! Sending the good vibes to Nev and shanti to bring her back.

This is soooooooooooo true!!!!

I'm so excited by this new NL5 (and ortega) release!

Do you think it will stay long (normal line up) or limited?

I would really like to be able to buy those in march but also in 2015 or 2020!

Not sure about how limited the limited editions are, but in the case of the new NL5 crosses, I wouldn't waste any time :) NL5/Afghan, here I come!

i believe Shanti had the NL5 in seedform pure for sure...i don't believe it was tainted at all but just some old beans of NL5 and a few other indica which he had for over twenty years and were actually placed above his fireplace...its an old thread where he stated he decided to germinate the seeds in hopes of using them in the future...this was when i first joined the forum i read that he had many of the old school plants that were lost saved in some seed form...i believe Shantibaba has either resurrected the NL5 from seed or he may have possibly been keeping his clone hidden and under the wraps so other companies would be missing an ingredient when they tried to release some of his strains...i can see Arjan buying a good 10-15,000$ worth of this stock, much like he did with Rez's gear on seedbay...atleast we here at MNS can treat the beans with they respect they deserve...but undoubtedly there will be many feminized and F2 rip offs of these great beans for years to come...grap em while u can all

Dear Sensi Seed Administration,
Recently my attention has been brought to attacks made upon my research on the legendary strain of marijuana known as Northern Lights.

http://forum.sensiseeds.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=6550

Now I must admit, I was taken off guard a bit by the nature of the response(s) from your company. Especially in light of the fact I had written, supported and even recommended Sensi Seeds in the same article you criticize as being "an ad" for Mr. Nice Seeds. Not only was Sensi Seeds mentioned in a positive light, but other seed companies such as Dutch Passion were also given some credit because they themselves are in possession of a line of cannabis known as "Oasis" which is of course said to be Northern Lights #2. Generally speaking, ads do not include competitors of said company. Rather, the article was written for the intentions of bringing the general information surrounding the Northern Lights strain together in an effort to make the general story and facts as easily accessible to the curious reader as possible.

Considering the nature of your responses to my article, I believe its only fair that I am able to respond back appropriately to your accusations about the inaccuracies of my article. For starters, nearly every piece of information contained within the framework of the article itself can easily be sourced to legitimate and valid sources within the industry. To insinuate I would purposely mislead the readers, especially when you, yourselves, have not put in the same kind of research before taking the positions you have, is causation for one to stop and evaluate your true motives and intentions.

In order to address the points of topic made by Sensi Seeds, first one must have a solid foundation of information in which to base their opinion. As I have previously written, the strain known as Northern Lights is said to have originated in the Pacific North West region of the United States. From that point, there is little question as to what happened next. The clone was obtained by Nevil Schoenmaker, subsequently bred by him and offered to millions of people around the world through his mail order cannabis seed business, known as "The Seed Bank."

Below is an ad from the 1985 "The Seed Bank" catalog, which is among the oldest, if not the oldest sourced material on the strain.

seedbank5.jpg

Other than the catalogs from "The Seed Bank" where Northern Lights was originally offered, information on these varieties is scarce besides grow reports and hearsay. One must also take into account the level of breeding the line underwent once it reached Nevil's grow room, where it was subsequently hybridized and worked extensively for many years by Nevil himself. Referring back to the 1990 "The Seed Bank" catalog, it is easy to see just how much work Nevil himself had put into this line.
NL51990.jpg

In between the 1985 and 1990 catalogs, a great deal of hybrids were made with various versions of Northern Lights. In the process, this line became one of the most famous varieties of cannabis in the entire world. There is absolutely no question what role Nevil played in Northern Lights becoming a pillar in the breeding industry and a legend in cannabis circles all over the globe. The man who would later be known as the original "King of Cannabis" sparked an entire industry, a great deal of whom are using Nevil's original stock to set the foundation of their own business's today. He is without question, one of the most important figures in the history of cannabis breeding.

So after establishing a loose foundation of facts, which are hardly in dispute, without further a due, lets take a look at some of the recent comments made by Sensi Seed Administration in regards to the article on Northern Lights.

Fair warning: I'm going to remove the chunk of text at the top of this thread because the hyperbolic tone and the many inaccuracies nullify its informational value.
For a company who was given their just desserts within the article, to see such a hostile attack upon the work presented honestly makes me wonder just how threatened your company feel's with the release of Mr. Nice Seed Northern Lights hybrids. As for the "many inaccuracies," we're going to examine just how inaccurate any statement made within the article truly is.

Interesting is the fact the first point of contention made is not even regards to Northern Lights, but rather the variety known as Haze. A glimpse into the ultimate position that will play itself by the Sensi Seed administration, their goal is simply to attack Mr. Nice Seeds, rather than myself. As Shantibaba himself is now famous for saying, "The proof is in the seed." And without question, the Haze varieties at Mr. Nice Seed Bank including Super Silver Haze, Mango Haze and the aptly named Nevilles Haze are the finest haze varieties on the market today. With Super Silver Haze taking a hat trick in the mid to late '90s with the High Times Cannabis Cup. A variety which is made from hybrids of haze varieties which have origins from 1969, seed collected by Nevil himself from within the United States. Not from lines received from Sam Skunkman, who is also said to have brought Haze to Holland as well, though his lines of haze date from the early 1970's.

That was in the 70's & 80's now I have clones for the last 20 years. My O Haze is not done being worked on that is why I tell people to use it as breeding materials.

Point of contention #1 from the Sensi Seed Administration busted.

Considering this is quite off topic, but rather stands as a mediocre attempt to flame a well respected company within the industry I will invite any who are interested to read all about the true "Origins of Haze" for themselves.

Some more information to consider before we move on to bust yet, another point of contention from Sensi Seed Administration.
Mr Nice Seedbank: Shantibaba explains what happened when a Welshman, two Australian cannabis breeders, and the best selection of old and new world cannabis varieties shared a small room.
Howard Marks (Mr Nice) and I (Shantibaba) met during the late 1990's while I was living and working in Holland. A few years previously (1995), I had set up the Greenhouse Seed Company. Coincidentally, at the same time, Howard was released from a lengthy imprisonment in the USA. During the next few years, we became very good friends and with the success of my breeding work and help from Neville Schoenmaker (the father of Dutch Seed banks), Howard and I discussed the possibility of working together. We decided to start a seed company to help growers throughout the world. Neville and I were already working together on various seed projects, growing and supplying certain strains to coffee shops as well as changing the uses and perceptions of cannabis.

You actually want to talk about neutral reporting of facts, when thus far your attack upon my work and Mr. Nice Seeds has been effectively shot out of the sky? The importance Nevil Schoenmaker has had on the entire industry is without question, and Shantibaba himself has developed some of the most famous lines of cannabis of modern times. Sensi Seed bank themselves uses quite a few lines which are directly related to lines originally created by both of these individuals. So for your company to question the role these men have played in the cannabis industry is akin to shooting yourselves in the foot. Impressive.

Originally posted by Sensi Seed Administration

Actual research(instead of quoting advertising material) should have revealed the fact that the 'original NL bred by Nevil' covers quite a bit of ground. The follwing are taken from 3 TSB catalogues:

Cannabis Indica 'Northern Lights'
Northern Lights "9" x Skunk "1" F1 Hybrid
Northern Lights x Afghani "1" F1 Hybrid
Northern Lights #132A
Northern Lights #2
Northern Lights 1
Northern Lights 5 x Northern Lights 2
Northern Lights 5 x SK1 F-1 Hybrid
Northern Lights Mix

Haze x Northern Lights F-1 Hybrid
Northern Lights #1
Northern Lights #2
Northern Lights 5 x 2
Northern Lights 5 x Skunk #1 F-1 Hybrid

Hash Plant x Northern Lights #1 F-1 Hybrid
Hashplant/Northern Lights #1 x Swazi
Northern Lights #1 F-3
Northern Lights #2 F-3
Northern Lights #5 x Haze F-1 Hybrid
Northern Lights #5 x Skunk #1 F-1 Hybrid
Northern Lights 5 x 2 F-1 Hybrid

The original names have been used above, and in the first catalogues the nomenclature hadn't been standardised. So "Northern Lights 1" is almost certainly the same plant as "Northern Lights #1", but I've reproduced all the names, just to be on the safe side.
A nice list, but hardly comprehensive. For starters you have left out the Northern Lights x G13 hybrids, and thats just from a quick glance.

Basically, you can try to draw your own conclusions from the various claims, or you can take the word of one source or another. Only one company has actually been trading seeds for 25 years, and that's Sensi.
That is one thing we can agree on, that we are all free to come to our own conclusions. Interestingly enough however, what appears to be the main question posed in the thread at the Sensi Seed forums was never addressed (lol), which was whether or not the Northern Lights variety currently offered by Sensi Seeds is in fact the same as it was during the late 1980's, as is claimed by the very same Sensi Seed Administration.

Originally posted by Sensi Seed Administration

Sensi knows.

In fact, it's only the preservation of the original individuals used for breeding that allows many hybrid strains to remain the same over so many years.

Using new parents regularly would lead to regular changes in the makeup of a strain, and therefore different strains.

The funny thing about your comment is that most growers interested in breeding and heritage are keen to know that the parents of hybrids are still the same as they were originally.
http://forum.sensiseeds.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=6541

A quick glance at their current strain description indicates that it is indeed, NOT the original Northern Lights offered by Nevil in the mid to late 1980's at "The Seed Bank."

An absolute must for the indoor grower! For many years the Northern Lights® dominated the various Harvest Festivals. Through selective breeding we have succeeded in producing one of the most powerful plants in the world. On top of that, we have developed a pure Indica strain highly adapted for indoor growing: compact, powerful with a good yield and exceptional resin production. A most lucrative plant for the indoor grower.

Awesome post, I used to like sensi alot until I started seeing their products first hand and maybe its the fact that they don't make new parent plants that their stock is loosing its magic. It actually makes alot of sense.

You made my day with this pic!

When my dad used to grow back in the early 90's this is what he grew. To this day its the best pot I smoked hands down. To top this off knowing what I know now, he didnt really do much for the plant and it still produced the best pot I've ever smoked. The things he did makes me cringe, bad habits and bad logic at best. But it was always the most potent pot in the world to me and still is. He still has the correspondence with neville somewhere. Its funny my dad got his wares from neville, I get mine from shanti and hopefully my kid will get his seeds one day from shanti's son.:)

This is why I'm so psyched for all these new orginal releases because since theyre from the 80's they'll still hopefully have that early bredding vigor thats all but gone today (except for mns). I mean those early strains you could beat the crap out of and they'd still perform like no new strains today. The raw potency is gone from these so called "elite" strains.

Shanti......PLEASE bring back the G13xNL2!!!!!!!!

Hi Jesse,

First of all thanks a lot for the amount of information you gave us (this thread but also, road skill skunk, Haze etc etc...).

I'm so sad with Sensi seed reaction, but This reaction only confirms what we supsect since their problems of germination, of support and their entry in the feminised business.

They just prove that they are not as good, competitive and serious as before, and your article put them into a corner.

Again, thanks a lot, and please go on with your articles that are for me a well of knowledge.

ps: sorry for my english, french here =)

Hi Djulz :)
Thanks for swinging in, nice post.

It appears as if Sensi Seeds is indeed quite threatened by the notion of a release of the MNS Northern Lights varieties as apparent by their most recent personal attacks. Interesting to note is the progression of hate coming from their end, especially in light of a response to the personal attacks they initiated haha. Their most recent post includes doubt that Shanti himself even posted the quote which I had sourced upon claims of "highly dubious or patently false" from Sensi Seeds lol. :D

Now, there may be some context in the rest of that thread that I'm unaware of, or it could be someone else using the name 'shantibaba'. I have no idea.
And apparently Jorge Cervantes doesnt even exist. (Note: According to Jorge he was actually with Nevil when they obtained Northern Lights)

Also, your assertion that NL came from the US in clone form seems to have been pulled out of thin air.
All - Time Highs by Jorge Cervantes

The modern era of marijuana cultivation and breeding has produced a plethora of cannabis strains. Like a fine wine, a strain of marijuana is a story in and of itself. Here are 10 of them

#3) Northern Lights#5
This strain was developed by " The Indian" on an island in the Northwest. He started with 11 seeds and named them NL#1, NL#2 and so on. Of the plants, Nl#5, NL#8 and NL#1 were the best, in that order. Neville of the Seed Bank shuttled clones back to Amsterdam from Seattle in the mid-80s. Today, Northern Lights #5 is the main variety that breeders use. It's often crossed with other varieties, such as Blueberry, Haze, Juicy Fruit and Jack Herer. Varieties are available from Sensi Seeds (who Registered the name), Canadian Professionals and Nirvana. At least 70 different varieties contain NL genetics. Northern Lights #5 is an absolute must if you grow indoors.

Genotype: Predominately Afghani Indica/Thai Sativa; very stable.
Taste: Strong, full-bodied, hashy.
Smell: Sweet, piney.
High: Body/cerebral stone can cause couch-lock.
Potency: 14 - 16% THC; very strong; great resin production.
Culture: Easy to grow; can be pushed with fertilizer.
Traits: High Flower-to-leaf ratio, compact buds, purple tinge to leaves as plant matures.
Yield: Very good; a favorite among Commercial growers.
Disease / Pest Resistance: Somewhat resistant to thrips and spider mites.
Indoors: 60 - 70 days.
Outdoors: Early October.
Ease to Manicure: Easy and fast.
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Good but low volume.

Also on the subject of research, if you'd taken even a cursory look around these forums, you'd see that I've stated on many occasions that, to the best of my knowledge, the Northern Lights offered by Sensi Seeds is NL 5x2.
To the best of your knowledge? Anyone know what the date is? Ive got March 4, 2010 here in the United States.

So why is it I have a quote here from the very same Sensi Seed Administration from February 16th, 2010 stating they're not even sure if what they're offering is NL#1 or NL 5 x 2? To the best of your knowledge? Really? Seems pretty Incompetent to me. ;)

Again, this demonstrates that your assertions ("the main question posed in the thread at the Sensi Seed forums was never addressed (lol), which was whether or not the Northern Lights variety currently offered by Sensi Seeds is in fact the same as it was during the late 1980's") are supported by a laughable lack of research.
Now thats quite impressive, I caught you in a bold face lie and you've demonstrated my "laughable lack of research" exactly how? But if you say so Sensi Seed Administration, than who am I to argue with you?

And I think perhaps my favorite quote yet

im interested to know wen neville first established the seed bank?

sams claims he gave nev haze in 84,the first haze hybrid nl#1 haze was released in 87

i dont believe the lines are related but id like to kno as much about the reported dates of releases

Which came first, 2007 or 1987?

Wow. Where to begin? Overall, it’s probably best to let you simmer in your soup of half-understood rumours.

I’m tempted to point out the many, many places where your information is incomplete, incorrect or simply ass-backwards, but why waste the time? Your own ‘research’ contradicts itself several times, and if you can’t read your own text closely enough to figure this out, what chance does anyone else have of educating you?

Frankly, your childish tone does more to undermine your laughable arguments and attempted ‘gotcha’ moments than anything I could say. You’re simply a pompous fanboy trying to sound authoritative on subjects you know nothing about.

Still, I still can’t help chuckling when you refer to the above as ‘research’ and whimper about ‘attacks on my research’. You think too highly of your own malformed opinions and arrogantly present them as facts.

The thing that made me decide to post is not your ignorance, but your cowardice and dishonesty. You have long posts above, where you claim to ‘bust’ various arguments (based, as ever, on your lack of information). The mental gymnastics necessary to keep telling yourself that you’re right are plainly visible.

What really caught my attention was the fact that in post #57 you weren’t brave enough to link to the thread again, or reproduce (or even acknowledge) the document that proved you and your ‘research’ utterly wrong.

Let’s call this Exhibit A, a reproduced forum post from 2007:
A bit of research would yield the source of the information presented, which just happens to be among the most respected minds in cannabis today.
A:
1988NL5.jpg

Point of contention from Sensi Seed Administration number two busted.

Let’s call my piece of documentary evidence Exhibit B, a scan of a paper catalogue from 1987:
B:
TSB_1987_01_3.jpg

TSB_1987_04_3.jpg

So … Exhibit A from 2007 says "...germinated some stock seed from 1988 where the original Northern light 5 originated from"

Exhibit B, from 20 years earlier, offers NL#5 hybrids in 1987.

This means Nevil was working with NL#5 in 1986, maybe even 1985.

Even if he only started working on it in 1987 and somehow had hybrids for sale the same year, this catalogue definitively proves that your source is incorrect. This is why your ‘research’ is laughable.

The fact that you refused to acknowledge this in your last post is truly pitiful and shows just how little interest you have in the truth.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you try to find a way to squirm out of this and claim that you were right all along. However, if you can convince yourself for a second that a 2007 forum post from someone you’ve never met outweighs printed material from 20 years earlier, you’re simply delusional.
(we won’t go into the fact that some of your other quotes in the posts above also contradict the 2007 forum post).

Point of contention from Sensi Seed Administration number two busted.

Yep. Your ‘busting’ skills are on full display. Pat yourself on the back.

As I said, I won’t waste the time pointing out your many other mistakes, but I have to laugh when I read stuff like this from your post:
The importance Nevil Schoenmaker has had on the entire industry is without question, and Shantibaba himself has developed some of the most famous lines of cannabis of modern times. Sensi Seed bank themselves uses quite a few lines which are directly related to lines originally created by both of these individuals.

To be clear, Sensi Seed Bank IS the modern incarnation of The Seed Bank. There was no break in continuity between TSB 1990 and SSB 1991.

Nevil ran it for 5 years, Ben has run it for 20 years. All of the genotypes collected and combined by Nevil still exist, plus many, many more. This is an uncontested fact; a rare thing in the cannabis breeding world, where most of the newer companies claim person x stole genotype y from breeder z.

Sensi Seed bank themselves uses quite a few lines which are directly related to lines originally created by both of these individuals.
The part about Nevil is uncontested. Nor is it controversial to state that hybrids created by Shanti are related to existing SSB lines.
But as ever, your interpretation of these facts is ass-backwards. Would you care to name some lines originally created by Shanti that subsequently became part of the SSB collection? More to the point, can you back up this claim with some documentary evidence? (hint: forums posts don’t count)

Are you under the impression that the 1990s came before the 1980s? This would explain your confusion about this point and the one about the origin of NL#5.

I really don’t what would be weirder – if you were actually a representative of MNS (which would mean you’re doing a godawful job of promoting them, since you can’t get basic facts straight) or if you’re simply a lickspittle, hoping to curry favour with someone you regard as a hero.

I guess if this post survives, that would suggest you’re just a lickspittle.
