Northern Lights

Hey there Jesse,

I think the person above makes some really valid points, looking forward to hearing your reply on this one.

Peace GG

Maybe there was just a mistake in the dates, all these facts are +20 years old, you can not say all Jesse's article is bullshit just because of one year difference in stories.

Shanti said 1988 but maybe it was 1986 or even before, therefore everything is allright ?

I think the point of discuss is not to know if the first seeds of NL came from 1987, or 1988, but to know if these NL seeds sprouted recently by Shanti, were the same line of seeds that seeds which the sensi seeds' Northern Lights lines come from.

In other terms, if these NL seeds are the same seeds used to create NL#5 female clone and others NL lines 20 years ago at Sensi Seeds.

But hey, we just talk about strains and genetics, and that's not very important, so please stay cool !

Peace and best vibes to you

Marcel

but too kill all that noise again im intereted in tha haze i kno another thread SAMS says he gave nev haze in 84 ,obviously if neville OFFERED NL1 HAZE in 88 N SILVER PEARL N NL5HAZE IN 89 he had been usin the NL for quite somtime

BECAZ THE OLDSCHOOL HAZES WHICH ARE SOMWAT DOCUMENTED AND SOM HAVE CLAIM SUCH AS HAZEMAN OR SOMBODY TO HAVE SEEN THIS CHALK BOARD THAT NEVILLE WROTE DOWN HIS FORMULAS,from this he created the building blocks for 75% of todays current haze offerings THE A5 C5 HPH AG13 CG13 C1 C5 soo the nl5 has been used prior to 85

im interested to kno if the nl5 that neville selected back wen creating A5 is still held by mns and used in the offering containg the haze A?

Hi, Do you have some info about those strains? I was like... 2 years old in 1985.

Silver pearl.... Hmmmmmmm arrrgggggg (Homer salivating sounds)

hopfully one day soon a full report will be done

85 i was just born lol

Nevil was active in breeding before 1984 and seems to have been selling seeds in that year, though it was quite low key.

The first printed TSB catalogue was 1985, after his return from Mazar-I-Sharif.

Nevil did not run SSSC.
He was doing business with SSC (Sensi Seed Club) prior to 1990, but the true identities behind SSSC are a mystery. I'd be very interested to see any reliable info or documents that mention who was behind SSSC, apart from the ambiguous 'two Dutch nationals', which is the only mention I can find.

NL is offered in the 1985 catalogue, but the first mention of NL#5 seems to be the "1987 Revised Catalogue".
I have an original copy of "The Seed Bank 1986/1987 Catalogue", which mentions an NL#9 cross, but doesn't list NL#5.

Is Jesse Outlawgrower?

Jesse,

I was just wondering, were you the person that posted your NL story over in the Sensi forum under the name Outlawgrower or is that someone else?

It's just that at the top of the story it says by Outlawgrower/Jesse, so I'm a bit confused if it's you.

Peace GG

Pardon me for butting in, since the question wasn't directed at me, but JessE is indeed Outlawgrower on the Sensi forums.

I should also point out that I added 'outlawgrower' to the 'by JessE' at the top of the story, as I thought it was important to mention that the guy posting it was also the guy who cobbled it together.

i'm a bit confused here: are you talking about the Sensi Seed Club (SSC)-- run by Dronkers et al-- or the Super Sativa Seed Club (SSSC), run by "Pim and Kees"?

Hi all :)
Below is a list of some of the newer Northern Lights hybrids to make their way to the MNS menu. As most of you are probably aware, a great deal of these are old classics that have literally been the inspiration of many legends throughout the cannabis scene over the past couple decades.

NL5 x Haze
NL5 xAfghan
NL5x Skunk
NLx Haze/ Skunk
Ortega
What is significant about the said lines is the fact they originate from quite old stock, in fact, the original stock where the famed NL5 herself came from that won the 1990 High Times Cannabis Cup. Northern Lights is an intricate part of many of today's' mainstream varieties, but in my opinion, what sets these varieties apart is just how close to the original lines which made such an impact on the world these varieties are in comparison to other options on the market. We're talking plants selected from the original seed stock, as opposed to varieties selected from the off spring of the originals.

Those are of course just some of the NL hybrids available on the menu, there are many others to choose from however. Some of which Im quite fond of in fact, so its great to see this queen of hearts resurface in such an original form with a nice selection for one to choose from.

:)

where exactly does your info come from that says Ortega is related to NL (other than both being Afghanica)? they originated from two different collections from geographically separate sources in the USA. the relation is..?

Hi Jim :)
Do you by any chance have any information on Ortega to share with us that can be sourced?

Hey Jesse,

Any chance you could answer the above question for me.
The guy from the Sensi forum says it's you and you haven't denied it so i'm still wondering?

NL5 x Haze?

Hey Jesse,
Do you mean NL5 x Haze A or C?
Just curious cause the NL5 x Haze C is the C5 haze witch we have been and still are growing for many years now. I'm growing 16 C5 beauties at this very moment together with 2 Neville Hazes.
Lovely plants and superb herb if you know how to grow them.
Anyways, the A5 Haze (NL5 x Haze A) is one of the strains that we've lost over the years, too bad cause that is a very very strong breed!
I would love to see the comeback of this killer strain. Not that i like it so much personally but over here it's a legendary strain!
Grtz,
Y. Sam

Hi Sam,
From my understanding Haze A and C are related varieties, though Haze A from my knowledge is no longer available. You're right about this being a killer strain, I was just reading Scorpions assessment of the NL5hz of old and its got quite the reputation for itself.

Thanks for swinging in Sam :)

I've read more good things about Sensi's NL5/Haze than any other Sensi strain.

MNS definately need to release their own version, is NHS C5xSkunk or A5xSkunk?

Hi Trillion,
Here is some info on NHS from Shanti that may help answer your question. :)

NHS or National Health Service or NL5 Haze x Skunk uses the original selection of Nevilles NL5HazeC female to a rather strong skunk line from a batch of very old seed I selected from 1988. It was done well and hopefully the testers of this strain will show you all what is in the genes....I can tell you things but I prefer F1 seed to illustrate it grown independently by members here. All the best Sb

I've spoken with Ed Rosenthal at length about Ortega on a couple of occasions. Slightly less than a decade ago, Ed was providing clones for local dispensaries, allegedly approved by of the city of Oakland. I'll spare everyone the details of his subsequent bust & trial, as that information is readily available on the internet.

Ed was growing a significant number of plants-- several warehouses worth-- from his large stash of seeds given to him over the years by Neville, Wernard Bruining, the Dronkers (as well as from his own collections), and eventually distributed the clones around the area. While most of what came out of that warehouse were unique specimens (crosses usually-- though not always-- designated by a letter & a number; A-10 was one of the more popular examples in the area), some of them were introductions of older genetics, like Ortega.

I got very attached to Ortega and grew her for several seasons. In the years after she slipped from my grasp I've had a couple of chances to talk with Ed about the Ortega. He told me much of the same story as you see repeated elsewhere:

Ortega came from a local Oakland grower known as "Maple Leaf" Wilson, the nickname coming from the Afghani plants he was known to grow . "Maple Leaf" was a friend/associate of Mel Frank, and eventually Neville & others purchased a significant amount of Wilson's stock, perhaps through Ed (he never said it himself, but seemed to imply it... it's no stretch to think of Ed providing seeds for Nev-- see the "PEHT" listing in the Seed Bank '87 Revised catalog as proof of these sorts of exchanges). (One wonders if Sandy Weinstein is involved somewhere in here, but Ed never mentioned Sandy's name in our discussions and I never thought to prod him to make or deny the connection.)

Early references to Wilson's stock can be found in the Seed Bank 1990 catalog ("Original Afghan Mix: This seedline comes from the collection of the late 'Maple Leaf' Wilson, reputedly once of the first collectors of Afghan seeds...") and the Super Sativa Seed Club ('87?) catalog, where Ortega is known as the "Oakland Indica" (there is no reference in the catalog as such to Ortega = O.Indica, that clarification recently came from Ed himself, who explained it as a NL5 = "Basic 5" sort of thing). There may be other references to this 'collection' in early Dutch canna-seed catalogs, but my collection is incomplete. There's certainly no indication of these genetics in the '87 Revised catalog. Did the Seed Bank ever sell pure Ortega?

If you really want to pin down the Ortega Indica as being part of the "Maple Leaf Collection", a pretty simple connect-the-dots using some relatively recent Sensi Seeds introductions should do the trick.

Marley's Collie
From Sensi's website:
After dozens of experimental crossings, the best Jamaican lady was pollinated with a pure Afghani cultivar from the syrup-sweet Maple Leaf Indica family, producing extraordinary results.
From Ed's 'Big Book of Buds':
Jam[aican]2 (female) x Ort[ega]15t7 (male)
First Lady, Black Domina and Maple Leaf Indica are other Sensi varieties that make use of the Ortega. MLI is at least 25% Ortega (a female used in this one), as is BD (an Ortega male used here). If Ed's versions of the Sensi 'recipes' are to be believed (he swore up and down that they're correct, no matter what Sensi has said otherwise), Sensi Seeds has used at least three distinct Ortegas (two males, one female) in their breeding programs over the years.
