The origins of Haze

What's your point Scoopy-Doo ?!?!?:D

Peace.

K.

Basically he said

What you all seem to forget ,Dont wish to acknowledge or Dont wish to remember Nevil stated he didnt believe the stock was pure haze

BC was actually grown commercially alongside 5HzC1, so it was a 10/11 week plant. This fact alone indicated that HzB was a Haze Hybrid to something early

This was pure haze 10 weeks  come on

I planted the rest of the old seeds. One came out. O for Omega. It was a 1970 seed. I suspected that it was only 25% Haze with one parent being Indica. It too did not really pan out

Well Bigherb, I wouldn't swear on a kilo of Haze Hash, that he told me that he grew them himself.
I seem to remember one batch had a number of years mixed together something like '66,'67,'68. A prominent ancestor was a thing called "Burning Bush"

I'll give you my understanding of how to work with this variety.

As I said before, I got a total of 7 plants from the original seed stock. They were all different. The Original female (the one that I didn't keep a clone of) and Haze male A, may have been siblings, but just as likely not. Yet there was a common Haze like thread among all of them. This tells me that there was likely no pure haze among them. Haze did not improve when put back to itself as I was told and later discovered. People who think that B.C. is the hope for the future ( if it can be resurrected) are likely to be disappointed. A NL5xHzA would be the best mate for it to test this out. Haze males A+C were at best half brothers, but certainly shared a common ancestor, so my guess is that the inbreeding co-efficient to the haze ancestor in Nevil's Haze is at most 37.5%

Which brings us back to my original point, which is, whatever the hell Haze A&C was, the hybrids Nevil produced from them, particularly NL5HZ is responsible for creating the modern Haze legacy, and transforming it into what it is today.

NL5Hz Set the standard, and Neville's Haze, further refined and continued that standard.

Nevil Did it. Those seeds were from 1969, He made the bet, played his hand perfectly, created the 5Hz, and the rest is history.

Thank God for small favors.

Academic arguments as to what is the most "pure" haze are redundant, because the truth is we will never really know. Lets just take a look at what is the best haze that we have today, that is what is important.

Its kind of like the argument of what makes a true "Aryan". OK so the guy has blonde hair but does that really make him superior? Furthermore can we really say he is a more pure "Aryan"? What the fuck is an "Aryan" anyway?
Revisionists, they always want to focus on some myth, and say that what they have is "pure". Its all such a load of shit.

One thing we do know.

Because of Nevil we all get to sample the best, most powerful Haze. And it really is Nevil's Haze.

Yeah, I agree Josh. Regardless of what it's origins and lineage really are, the Haze breeding plants Nevil used were game changing.

It must annoy Sam that it was Nevil that changed the game rather than him and Sam has spent years trying to steal back the credit by promoting his own legend while at the same time rubbishing Nevil.

As we know, until Nevil came back and retorted with his side of things, Sam and his cronies had been rather successful as twisting things to their own ends.

I already answered to you that question Biggie...

Do your math...

Peace.

K.

Cousin kash

I didnt try to point you out it was an indirect post but i quoted your post caz of your thought .If you read below No one else is arguing this point Now nor in the past

Lets agree to disagree its all good, caz we dont feel each other on this .

But Im glad you didnt try to become an accountant :D

Math anint got nothin to do with this its your perception ,Unless you spoke privately with Nevil .It's amazing how you Dont take his post for what it clearly says

Your posted quotes r pointless really your question had nothing to do with the topic of pure haze n i dont have any idea how you came to your conclusion he refers to thai

how bout the O omega quoted post above about indica does buddah thai have indi in her if soo you might be on to somthin ;)

Isnt it clear enough from the 10/11 week BC ,Ive been bashed for quite some time over my NH maturing ,tehn we look at Nevil post about the short flowering time of this unreleased pure haze aswell as resin buds 9 weeks Nevilles haze in the tropics

You fellas gotta start being open minded and listening

As mentioned the Important thing is Nevil has given us a taste of the past and kept alive the haze blood ,which clearly is world class .

could the thai backround in the haze be from the nl5?

If nev is correct, then Sam didn't add any thai until what 73?

Good point deran, palm trees will grow on the south coast of England and that's around 50N I think.

The latitude isn't the only factor of course, coastal locations can finish plants later than inland because they get frost a little later due to the warming effect of the sea.

NAhh NAHH nah ,Impossible

I need a sample too make sure its actually SSH ,I dont believe just the pic i need to see a local sign or somthin to know it was actually grown in czech with a date on it for varification

Lmao ,im just buggin out ,ONLY a joke

Much Respect Pindulinka for all the contributions and great smoke reports

The same latitude on the westcoast will never freeze, but if you go to the eastcoast it will be a bitter winter. Anyway I'm not going to say its impossible, especially not with SSH. Even with Nevil's Haze, miracles can happen... Who knows? A really early pheno, combined with a very mild winter and a premature harvest, maybe you could get something smokable. I'm sure stranger things have happened.

Well pin managed to get a lot of pretty sat doms to finish in his garden.

That part of the Czech Republic has a mediterranean climate in summer, winters can be harsh there but summers are hot and dry.

"Original Haze Poster Project"

Hey everyone,

If you're interested in a nice reproduction of the infamous 'Cosmic Boogie' poster, you may want to check out The Original Haze Poster Project.

Ps. I'm not affiliated with this organization.

That is indeed intriguing thanks for the link

Im curious to know if R.L. has copywritten this poster I understand it would be nescessary for the reproductionist to have permission from him or his next of kin

i went to the deep green cannabis festival this weekend, and they had a booth for the original haze poster project, i kept missing the guy, but judging by his claims, the haze may be lifting, and the mystery may be solved..

check out this info from the site..

This promotional poster was designed in 1975 by R.L. and some of his associates in the first known successful attempt to introduce four connoisseur developed strains of Haze cannabis: Gold, Magenta, Silver, and Blue. This ambitious campaign actually created both brand identity and consumer loyalty while advertising the Haze production in the Santa Cruz hills in the 1970s.

It is interesting to remember in 1975-76 as the entire country was preparing to celebrate the Bicentennial Anniversary, Jerry Brown Jr. was running for his first term as governor, and there was a state referendum on the ballot to legalize marijuana.

In the fall of 1976, retail marijuana in “lids” was $15-$25/oz., and top shelf “connoisseur” cannabis $50-$60/oz. When the haze strains were introduced at $200+/oz., consumers scoffed at such a price. The sticker shock soon disappeared in the “haze” after being sampled. To many, the Haze strains were soon considered the “best in the world.” Consumers were given the cannabis, poster, and in some cases, a small rosewood box. All the posters distributed at that time were passed by hand by Bear a local contact (we’ll call him Bear to confuse no one), who distributed 98% of the original crop. The entire harvest was distributed in 90 days, thus the myth of the haze begins, growing far beyond the range of cannabis itself, and continues still…

Investigating the participants with reliable first hand knowledge of cannabis cultivation and distribution in Santa Cruz 1965-1978 would be a near impossible challenge to the best of historians. Fortunately here at OHPP, we have some truly remarkably positioned industry elders to call upon. Suffice it to say, that Grand Daddy Mike has secured true provenance and possession of the remaining (never distributed) posters from the original run of 1000.

Grand Daddy Mike knows R.M., an ex-Santa Cruz distributor during the mid-1970s, who obtained various strains of the Haze, poster and rosewood box from Bear. Bear was the contact and distributor in the Santa Cruz/Boulder Creek area during that era. R.L., the marketing visionary, lived in the area.

Grand Daddy Mike made contact with R.M., and R.M. loaned his original poster and rosewood box to Grand Daddy Mike for use by the Original Haze Poster Project (OHPP). R.M. then contacted Bear and secured the undistributed artifacts which he passes to Grand Daddy Mike. Bear also passed current contact information for the “Queen of the Haze” and some of his 1970s associates. R.M. and Grand Daddy Mike recently met the Queen of the Haze, visited the old farm site and are patiently reuniting the old Haze tribe, and sniffing the Haze trail for more old friends and associates.

Owners of The Original Haze posters, with provenance, may be nominated to become members of the OHPP working group.

The posters are beautiful in both inspiration and execution. Detailed graphics and informative text accurately portray the essential spirit, values, and attitudes prevalent within the marijuana subculture at the time of this historic marketing event.

Strain Brand Identity
The very top center of the poster has a small graphic representation of a cannabis flower blossom and in a white border the word “Trademark.” This graphic is the trademark of the Original Haze strains, listed in the order developed over the lightning bolts, “Magenta, Gold, Silver, and Blue.”

Patriotism
Timed to coincide with the Bicentennial Anniversary -“Spirit of ‘76” at bottom of text- the release of this poster was the patriotic declaration of independence for the State of Haze Consciousness and the marijuana industry, evidenced by the rampant eagle on a red, white, and blue national shield, “Americana” and “1976” on the golden edge of the shield.

Pride
The eagle holds a ribbon banner “Connoisseur’s Choice Cultivated California Cannabis” which shows both pride in an exceptional product and community region, both considered “cultivated.”

Ecology
The shield border and the bottom of the text repeat “In Nature We Trust,” and the poster contains ecological endorsements “No Chemicals,” and “Organically Grown Acclimatized”. Acclimatized meant inbred for yield and potency to flourish in greenhouses of the Santa Cruz region of California.

Defiance
The declaration - “Warning: In some states cannabis is still illegal!” - refers to the referendum to legalize marijuana on the California ballot for a vote in 1976. This attitude of regional independence expressed the poster author’s belief that the bill would pass, which proved to be unfounded.

Astrology
Representations of the twelve Zodiac signs border both sides of the graphic, six on each side entwined in cannabis leaves and flowers. Multiple references to seasonal dates in the text portion are stated in astrological terms.

Ethical Practices
One of the prime values of the cannabis subculture, epitomized by the Haze distribution practice, is represented with the “Honest Weight” text on both sides of the triple beam balance scale at the bottom central of the graphic.

Playfulness
The small banner “In Joy” celebrates the spirit of the cannabis cultivator at his work, and in his Haze. “The Cosmic Boogie” was an acknowledgement of the universal dance of life that unites us all.

Do not take literally the specific soil and nutrient formulae, the pH ranges, or the suggested cultivation dates.
All these “clues” were meant to give direction, while deliberately misleading imitators.
Actual growers may have been given a decoding card which perhaps said, “Reduce first two soil ingredients by half. Eliminate kelp, double compost and dolomite as organic nutrients. Shift pH range .70 down. Use 1967 Ephemeris to decode astrological dates.” Maybe not.

Hi all,
The legend of haze as it stands today is born out of the success Nevil found with the lines of haze he worked in the '80s. Thus far, this is the reference point I look at to pin point where all the fuss about this line really started to happen. We can reference haze as far back as the '70s it seems in High Times magazine, but there are many questions left unanswered in between then.

In my opinion the word haze in association with marijuana really started to become a house hold name due to the strains of cannabis Nevil sold at The Seed Bank, which won many awards. These varieties were sold to customers all over the world, and no doubt the qualities of the plant spoke for itself. It is these prize winning haze varieties that everyone today is in actuality speaking of when they talk of haze. And like with any prize winning, industry pillar, there are others who have copies and reproductions of these lines in an attempt to cash in on the cow.

In attempting to locate any kind of history with validity, we really need to look at the sources we have available. From the best sources we can trace, it looks as if the mystery of haze will never be solved. But time as a way of marching forward, no matter what. One can not speculate on what comes down the road, but by analyzing all of the available data thus far we come full circle back to a mystery which ultimately gained ground once Nevil plied his genius to the line.

With the popularity of High Times Magazine, the legend of haze has been perpetuated across the globe by the prize winning varieties of haze such as Nl x Haze, Super Silver haze, Jack Herer etc. And ultimately the line which is so famous today known as Haze traces its modern days roots right here directly to Shantibaba and Nevil at MNS. So popular culture in regards to haze has been shaped a great deal by the efforts of Nevil and the popularity of High Times Magazine across the globe. Though the story of haze is as intriguing now as it will be ten years from now. Because we're talking about among the most special varieties of cannabis in the world today.

nevil did a great thing for us and the plant when he worked with the haze, but its rep started before he ever heard of it.
imagine what we would have today if nevil got to select from thousands of haze plants and not just 3 or 7.

i'm indeed glad Nevil, then shanti, got the line to work with. as an oldster however, i am acutely aware that haze was already famous pre-dutch seed bank. whether the fame would have continued is another question, and a mute one at that.

Bohdi

I think it's great this piece of history is being made available to the public, but as ive mentioned they had to get permission from R.L. or next of kin to do it legally.Soo i wonder who may have contact with the man himself or his family ???

I have sent a email a while back to the site with some questions non pertaining to the aquiring the poster but never got a response not a thx for inquiring .

I understand you kept missing the guy ,Did you Get you get to speak with anyone at the booth ?

Again thanks too Nevil n Shantibaba for preservation and their world reknown master piece hybrids .But the haze was Quite famous long before both of the masters had any fame and im glad thats understood and Recognized
