The origins of Haze

I love taking advantage of the Californian spring & getting a small crop of greenhouse-grown Haze in before summer hits. Last year, my Afghani Haze x Master Kush and Old Mother bastards were done in April!

This year will be different, as the Haze cutting I have planted outdoors will take around 20 weeks. I'm guessing I'll be smoking this one sometime in late June.

I have no idea what exactly it is, but she came from an older gent named Jack from up in Mendo, and he's had her since the '80s. I tried a couple of them indoors this winter, confining them to the perimeter of my grow room, and they do indeed take close to 20 weeks (though I only made it 18 before I lost patience). When flowered from clone in a 7 gallon pot, she topped out at about five feet.

The effects are mellow and cheerful, not a strong sativa by any means but exceptionally pleasant and euphoric without any heart-racing stimulation. The flavors are unique but certainly Haze-y... if you wore a pair of leather boots while cutting the lawn, those boots might taste like this Haze. :D

This cutting is a little too pure sativa for my grow conditions, so after these last few flower out in the greenhouse she'll be gone from my hands... but not before she gets pollinated by a Skunk #1 male. Just in case, ya know?

Hi Jim....This Jack you are talking about, he is not a tall thin black haired guy by any chance ???
Lives close to the coast.

Kanga, I'll ask my source for these clones as I'm sure he'll remember. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if we were talking about the same gentleman...

I like the course-correction that seems to have taken effect on this thread.

Hempire, I'm not sure I agree-- in totality, at least-- with Nev's statement that all of Sam's Hazes were crap. I've grown out a good handful of Sam's Haze/Skunk from Gypsy, and have found exceptional females each time. I recently used a male from the last few I sprouted to pollinate a G13Haze/Amnesia cutting and am very interested to see the results. I've also lately pollinated a female cutting of Sam's Haze/Skunk with an SSH male.

Here's something else I've been fooling with as of late: GHS Nev's Haze x Sensi NL5Hz. Most of the phenotypes were very NL-leaning like their mother, but this lone Haze-type has stood out as unique against her sisters. The aromas are quite similar to the Skunkman Haze/Skunk (lemongrass + compost), with a touch of rubbery NL smell. This little tester is at about 83 or so days...

Thanks for the kind words, british_hempire and bigherb. I was hoping to hijack this thread back from the off-topic nonsense that has begun to dominate.

.

Bigherb, I wish I could ask Jack some questions but never had the chance. The clones were brought to my local medical cannabis dispensary by Jack on the chance that they would sell his clones on consignment. When he told the clone purchaser that they went for 20 weeks, the purchaser answered quite honestly that he wouldn't be able to sell them. Jack, disappointed by the lack of potential sale and with a long drive back to Mendo, left the tray there. The clone manager fished a few out of the garbage for me a few days later after no one else would adopt them. Needless to say, everything I know about this variety comes second-hand from the clone purchaser. The original tags said "Jack's Old-time Haze"-- my first assumption was that it was from "Old Timer's Haze" stock, but the clone purchaser said he made the name up from the scant info that Jack provided.

I'll try to drop in a few more pictures as the season progresses.

Pax!

I applaud you in the attempt it was needed and i think was succesful

I Really love that story ,I appreciate you sharing especially those great details.Respect to you for your efforts and jack for his spreading and preservation .Its sad Seems nowadays most are interested in short flowering hype strains

It be great if you could ask your source more detail about the cutting aswell

I'm not sure I agree-- in totality, at least-- with Nev's statement that all of Sam's Hazes were crap

Jim i agree with you 100%

I was like akid at Xmas wen Nevil first posted than i think i got the first verbal lashing/I was the first to heat the man .There was n still are many questions i have.

There are many/several report from respected IC OT's that praise the SK/HZ line n speak highly of the thunk aswell.I mentioned many times that CC haze hybrids share many similiar traits with MNS hazes incense /catpiss being most common frankincense has been reported aswell.the similarites are intriguing n makes for great argument as for the highly debated in the past n now of
who had earlier stock

I find the statement by nevil about his purple haze being crap intriguing ,Sams admitts that no clones from the bros ;) in santa cruz were saved nor used.what PHAZE was this it was never offered in a catalog n as far as i recall sams said somthin about it disspearing long ago from the gene pool

Kanga

I would love to read any literature sam brings out ,
he has a lot to tell i should think ..

I agree 1000% ,ive asked openly and privately .The answer maybe one day

I just think it will never happen ,once a lie is told you have to carry on with what is prsented as truth to maintain its authenticity and clearly it hasnt been done thus far .So it will be more like the book of revelation rather than an autobiography

Hempire, I think mine might be a bit of an early finisher compared to your Seedsman OH's! As you can see, she's starting to sex out a bit and after thirty-plus days outdoors in the greenhouse, it's about time. Our March here in the Bay Area had 21+ days of rain (and most of the rest were fairly steely & overcast), so to me it is impressive that she is so healthy and vibrant.

Sorry I didn't reply to you earlier Jim, I tested out my latest batch of SSH oil and it threw me for a loop for a bit...

Thanks for the hijack, was very much needed, you sir are a gent.

I love that story of how you obtained the Haze. All my friends always take the mickey out of how I'll flower things for months on end so 20 weeks wouldn't have put me off for a heirloom Mendo Haze.

I don't know my Cali geography, is Mendo anywhere near Santa Cruz? They are both counties right, I take it both are close to the Bay area?

As a long term sativa lover, I can say for sure that for that guy to have kept it for years and it taking 20 weeks it must be pretty bloody good because I've grown a lot of long sats that were good but not so good I was prepared to keep em in rotation in my garden. For instance, I've got a Purple Thai going now that gets prettier and more colourful by the day but is already past 100 days and still pumping out new pistils even though she' had no nitrogen since day 65 and all her leaves are yellow and dropping off. So she looks like she is going to go 150 days which is a long f^&$ing time! The Thai mother was one of those that never ripened properly indoors, I took her to 24 weeks and she still wasn't done, the Purple Afghan father was from a line that took 60-70 days max so I am surprised this Purple Thai is going so long, as pretty looking as she is and as decent as the yield looks to be, I really doubt I will run her again as I could run two SSH in the time it takes to run the Purple Thai once and I have my doubts she will be twice as good as my SSH is. Growing indoors in small spaces you have to be ruthless like that, if I lived in Cali I'd just run her outdoors, not mind she took 6 months or more because I think she could produce a few pounds in good dirt and full sun.

Hey bh ,
I recall sam saying his fave of all time to toke was haze and golden thai ,
no mention of columbian or mexican .

I can see how to some everything doesnt quite add up right ,
its true we do try at times to be too "politically correct"

I would love to read any literature sam brings out ,
he has a lot to tell i should think ..

Yeah, I remember sam saying that about his faves.

I've never been politically correct and often I only open my mouth to put my foot in it byt I do care about trying to keep people honest if possible.

I'm sure Sam has a lot to tell but not all of it would paint him in a good light at all so I doubt he'll write a book, he's not the author type I don't think, RCC is the writer. He wrote Hashish sat in the GHS shop so you never know, maybe might be sat in there pen in hand again in the future.

I like the course-correction that seems to have taken effect on this thread.

I don't know that all Sam's Hazes are crap, I doubt that's true myself, just saying that you never hear em discussed online and despite being cheaply and readily available in the UK for the best art of 20 years now I don't remember ever hearing of anyone growing them more than once or any keeper cuts having been kept and circulated.

My direct experience is with Haze and HazeSkunk, did two packs of each and the Haze I never got along with. I ran 5 at a time and out of them all, they all reminded me strongly of Thai apart from two, one was shorter and bright lime green, looked like a Mexican, the other had thin, very pointy leaves and dark foliage with some purple on the petioles and leaf veins, looked very Colombian to me. That leads me to think that the Thai/South Indian parts of Sam's Haze are very dominant.

That makes sense if you think about it.

The given lineage of Haze if I remember correctly which way round the Thai and Indian go is:

((Mexican/Colombian) x Thai) x South Indian

Now, without any further linebreeding, that would seem to me to give these percentages:

12.5% Mexican
12.5% Colombian
25% Thai
50% South Indian

I'm not exactly sure what Sam's South Indian looked like, probably a lot like some types of Thai I'm familiar with. Anyways, it would seem to me that out of the dozen or so Haze females I saw, getting 1 Mexican pheno, 1 Colombian pheno and the rest Thai/Indian phenos would fit with the supposed lineage of Sam's Haze.

As I recall, the Colombian one took 70 days to show sex and was female, the Mexican one took 65 days to show sex and was male, the others hadn't shown sex by 80 days apart from two males I pulled, they eventually popped pistils around 90 days. Those first 90 days had been on 12/12 lighting under a 250w halide. I then moved them under a pair of 250w HPS hung vertically, planning to let em fill out the 6ft6 headroom. I put the HPS on 11/13 to encourage them to start flowering and they did, at about the rate of that 24 week Thai I mentioned. I forget exactly how long I let em go but I had to go to Spain and they were nowhere near so got chopped. I think I turned the lights down to 10/14 after 5-6 weeks of 11/13, I forget exactly.

This 1 in 20 being keepers ratio Sam spoke of always concerned me when I was growing his Haze, those are not good numbers for someone growing indoors in his loft space, hell, those aren't good numbers for someone legal in Mendo with a 99 plant limit!

So my theory, and it is only a theory and I'm just throwing it out there for discussion is this:

Haze, the original Cali one was f^%&ing awesome, 500 an oz in 1969 prices awesome and remember, truly golden and great Acapulco Gold was less than that an elbow.

Sam returned to Cali from the Hippie Trail in 1971 and planted Haze seeds, next two years he grew the Thai seeds he mentioned sieveing through kilos of the best sticks to find and the South Indian he collected while travelling through Kerala. He crossed the best Thai and Indian males to the Haze because in the first season he had incrossed the Haze and discovered the incross produced plants inferior to what he started with. Also, I expect he discovered other issues with the Haze, perhaps only 1 in 20 was any good and so he chose those ones to cross to his Thai and Indian males.

Over the next few years Sam tried to linebreed his Haze so that the original Haze traits he found so desirable in the first place were more common than 1 in 20, he never really succeeded in producing anything that great from it, the special Haze qualities were still there but you had to dig for them. Perhaps he found that his different linebreeding directions all eventually led to dead ends so he kept the line fairly broad and didn't inbreed it too much, instead preferring to select the best Haze females and hybridise them, hence Haze x Skunk, Haze x South Indian etc.

When Sam moved to Holland he was short of cash so he sold as many Haze seeds as he could bring himself to part with to Nevil. Included in those were the last of the 1960s Haze seeds Sam had begun his work with plus some of the earliest Haze hybrids Sam had made, perhaps Haze x Thai and (Haze x Thai) x Indian. Nevil found the gold in the pure Haze seeds rather than in Sam's hybrids and was able to capture a lot of the special Haze qualities through hybridising it to his best female indicas - e.g. NL5Haze, G13Haze, HPHaze, SPHaze etc.

Now, if you're Sam you're gonna be really annoyed at this, here you are, a guy from the heart of the Cali scene who was brought to Holland by Wernard as the Great White Hope and told everyone who'd listen how good his seeds were and charged them a fortune for them; and within 5 years of you're arrival, the name everyone associates with Haze in Holland and probably everywhere except that Cali scene you came from isn't yours, it's Nevils because Nevil has produced Haze hybrids that have been truly game changing. That's no joke, Nev's Haze work changed everything and it's still what everyone in Holland wants to grow and smoke today. The Amnesia cutting that is so widely sold and grown there is just a SSH, GHS, Soma, DNA and most of the other seed cos are just selling hacks of Nev's Hazes - Soma and DNA crossed that G13Haze to everything including Soma crossing it to SSH and calling it Amnesia Haze. All this has got to piss Sam off.

I put my theory in highlights to make it clear which bit of my post is the theory bit.

Now discuss....

But for pity's sake keep it civil....

does the rcc/sam haze suck because of their thai stock?

Again the Master, Nev always complained about shitty Thai stock.

Am i buggin was this sarcastic ? :)

Not sure who says the haze from SAMS sucks ,In actuallity all the haze available today on the market is from sams with the very rare single handed exceptions

Also not sure about which post of Nevil's you refer to that thai was not good ,i remember the thai buddah reference to hawe and than the article blow confirns jut how specila the thai Buddah was an the high price it demanded aswell as the times articlein 75 with the thai being the most expensive

Is the 89-90 Seedbank NL5hz the same as the Seedbank NL5hz that is being sold now? My assumption is that the mothers and fathers are the same. Wrong?

P.S. I'm very fond of Hempy's buckets. :)

... Meanwhile, I don't think anyone has bothered with Sam's Original Haze very much, the hybrids of it like HazeSkunk, Indian Haze have been easily available for years from TFD and Seedsman but have never garnered much attention, I've grown em, never found anything special....

...Haze = Mexican/Colombian, bred in Cali in the 60s

Original Haze = (Haze x Thai) x South Indian, bred in Cali in the early 70s

If I'm right then that would account for why Nev's Haze hybrid work is better than Sam's - Nev's has more Haze in it!
I believe I've seen some post where people enjoyed Sam's Haze x Skunk on ICMag. Could it be they haven't experienced the quality of weed you guys are used to? I know that would fit me.

If Haze = Mexican/Colombian why would the leaves be so skinny like Thai?

Well done hempy, you reacted according to type exactly as we knew you would. You reallyare a cranky old git who doesn't know when to stop going on like a broken record about the same old shit until it gets to the point where people can't take it anymore and have to tell you sto shut the fuck up.

i tried to be nice but you 2 just cant help you selfs can you.

No you bloody didn't, look at the last dozen pages in this thread, you've been anything but nice.

You are right though, we can't help ourselves, when someone is being as much of a thread-derailing pain in the arse as you were then decent guys like me, Wally and Jim can't help but try to put the thread back on track. Jim's a gent, but me and wally just get utterly fed up of your bile and no, we can't help ourselves and go and point out you're being an ass again.

We've been round these houses for years hempy and you've always been the same - nasty. The way you try to dominate threads and belittle people and post pics with misspelled stupid captions just to get cheap shots in at people is all incredibly self-centred, immature and stupid.

A mature adult wouldn't behave this way, especially not if he, as you keep saying, has so much respect for the owner. I do have respect and I was asked if I would do my level best to get along with ya because we are on the same side in this at the end of the day but you can only stretch the 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' truism so far before you just have to shake your head, walk away and say to the owner 'sorry mate, I tried but he's just too much of a nasty piece of work'.

You're like a big kid hempy, a nasty one at that, you really should try to grow up, be less emotional in your responses and instead of turning every little disagreement into a personal vendetta learn to deal with it as a rational adult would and agree to disagree.

Now if you don't have anything to say, get the hell out of this thread and let the adults get on with their nice civil discussion about Haze. If you really have to let fly at people with your bile and hatred go start a 'You're all fucking stupid cos I say so' thread where you can argue and bitch and moan all you like without ruining things for everyone else.

the only "haze" i ever had experience growing was home grown fantaseeds years ago.

i can say its nothing like the other hazes i've smoked or hybrids ive seen or grown.

Found uddno how many females, with only one being a keeper and after 110 days i was lucky to get 3 grams a plant, but that smoke was amazing.

The best haze i've smoked to this day was some Chocolate Haze about 9-10 years ago, i was happy to throw money at it.

im curious to hear about the taste an aromas of the keeper n non keepers ?

chocolate haze that sounds tasty ,Where was that from ?

was it full on chocolate taste

i have experieneced this trait in haze b4 just not the dominant taste

You have something you want to say to me Hempy? I've tried to be civil, and I will remain that way, but I will say this: Keep my name out of your mouth. You can misinterpret my post all you want

Bobby Digital,
Its funny how Scorpion, hempy and myself have all misinterpreted your post. Perhaps we have not misinterpreted anything at all, and you're unable to accept the rebuttals levied? I am not sure how you think things are suppost to work, but your view seems a little bit skewed to me to say the very least. Are you actually going to tell hempy to keep your name out his mouth, after you're the one who instigated his rebuttal in the first place? You do realize, thats how these things work, right?

Why is it so many of you feel a sense of entitlement to post whatever you like, no matter how negative, or wrong, and feel that a rebuttal should not be rendered? Do you actually believe you should be able to say what you like, without anyone responding back? If so, I would wager you have a great deal to learn in life.

You are not going to come into my thread, which Ive spent a great deal of time on, and tell me what I can or can not post, and wager innuendo threats to Hempy, after you're the one who called him out in the first place. It never ceases to amaze me how many of you with no real knowledge or passion for the plant can downplay others desire for the facts, truth and straight and narrow. I can not count on my fingers how many times I have been trolled by the same individuals, for extended periods of time and ignored them all the long. But once I do respond back, people like Bobby Digital are quick to say Bad JessE lol. They remain quiet while the trolling happens, but once a reponse is rindered, all of a sudden they are outspoken. Funny how these types of things work...

You speak of respect for the website, but you have none yourself Bobby! Where is your respect for Shanti's rules of not divulging contents of pm? Do you think its acceptable to highlight a specific part of hempy's post, and say JessE essentially said the same thing in private message, and not be called out on it? You are a walking set of contradictions, which is why you initially got a private message in the first place instead of an ass kicking on the forum.

I personally find you to be a two faced little bitch Bobby, and if you do not like to hear the truth, then perhaps this is not the forum for you? Because this has always been a no non-sense forum, from the beginning. Ive watched this forum grow from its infancy at other websites, into what it is today, and will no doubt evolve into tomorrow. A majority of you, you included Bobby, have had absolutely zero to do with that. You only find yourselves here now, because people like Hempy and Scorpion, Kashgari etc. helped build this place from the ground up. Now you new arrivals show up, attempt to change a no non-sense forum into bullshit central, where you attack others and yet expect no one to respond back in kind.

It is you who came into this thread, and started running your mouth. Not the other way around. And in three seperate post you make inflammatory comments, yet expect not to be pulled up on your actions? Get real.

Hi BH,
Now I think you are getting to the root of it. And I think in addition to this, I believe there is one other important variable. That is some profound effect, call it luck, destiny. I might call it gamblers luck... But in the famous words of that great Jedi Knight, Obi Wan Kenobi--"There is no such thing as luck.." So... Maybe it was The Force. But whatever it was, those few plants that sprouted out of 2000 miscellaneous haze seeds, whatever they were, just happened to be the shit of all time. Nevil has the knack of knowing the shit when he sees it, and capitalizing on and leveraging a small window of opportunity. He made the bet, played his cards to their full potential, and we all reaped the benefits of his perfectly played hand.
The Hand of Destiny, gave us all Nevil's Hand of Haze.

Some real good info being shared here so thanks to those that are doing it.

As for those that are using this for an open bitch fest can you please take it to PM if you want to act like kids as I'm here to learn not see post after post of childish shit & name calling that is never going to solve any thing or help any one in the community.

This a quote I have taken from some one & I hope it doesnt offend any one but it's a good mantra while using forums.

"fighting on the internet is like winning Gold in the special olympics, yeah you won Gold but you're still a fucking retard"

Time to put hempy on ignore, he's gone into rant mode again, this is like a broken record with this guy, FFS.

I don't even understand half of what he wrote 'numbs beans retinue' that's just stringing random words together, a retinue is a group of people who follow an important person.

I dunno, senility is awful to see....

Back to the topic at hand, Joshua, nice post, I agree with ya. Like I say, Nev's ability to spot the good shit and use it to create something special is probably a large part of why Sam is pissed off with him, Sam has an ego bigger even than hempy's so you can imagine how he feels about Nev's name being more associated with great Haze than Sam's ever will. Maybe there's something karmic in that and Sam has bad karma?
