The BSHW is supposedly a Sativa(ZP/ZPcross?) x Afghani (Holy Weed). Snow has a broad leaf indica pheno of BSHW as well. His example is the most extreme expression from sisters I have ever seen and it's such an old line. It's pheno's are all over the place and so are the SAGE pheno's.
The bud that I got my seed from was also sugary sweet like you said, Josh. Maybe the Afghani contributes to that.
I only mean to say that BSHW and Haze may share a close and common ancestor. IMO, the timeline, the distance, the phenos and the accounts make BSHW a good example in the research of California Haze.
Peace.
EDIT, I was typing this post while you were posting your post, BH. I've heard that story about Perry and the surfers but not about the loco. Good stuff.
Very interesting Cannatori... I know some of the folks that originated the Big Sur, and I can tell you right now, that the Big Sur Weed had major influence all over California, and particularly in the Emerald Triangle, especially Mendocino. Most of what I have seen in Big Sur has been sativa dominant sativa indica hybrids. Big Sur is the root, and Esalen was a major hub of what was to later become known as "The Hippie Movement".
I knew more than a couple of the original Psychedelic Rangers, and had the honor of turning them on to the original Seedbank NL5Hz, and let it suffice to say, that it left them speechless, one even accused me of lacing it with Angel Dust. So stunned were they by it that they openly admitted that they had never seen anything like it. Many of them were in their 60s and 70s when I was hanging with them like 15 years ago. I know some of them have passed on.
I think the Haze is another thing entirely. The haze brothers are a legend, that none of the heavy cats I know in Santa Cruz had ever heard of, so they must have been a very small very elite scene, isolated from the rest of the California scene, cause these folks I'm telling you about were dialed in, even in the 90s when I was hanging out with them.
The original cats who started it all, everything, they knew Timothy Leary, they were bringing in all the red label from Afghan, etc.
It all started down in Big Sur man... I told them about Nevil... It only took the Holland Haze to convince them, nobody had ever seen shit like that down in Big Sur, or Santa Cruz, or anywhere, for that matter. Of course everyone knew of the "Purple Haze", in Santa Cruz, that shit is old hat, but Nevil's 5Hz? Nobody had an inkling that shit like that could even exist.
If you taste and see the Big Sur you can tell that it is somehow related to so many of the old school California races, but the Haze? well it just seems to me like an entirely different animal.
