so your saying Dr atomic has nl but Shanti and Nev dont OK.

nope i never never said that, i'm not english so excuse me for poor english but it's was really not my intention to try to say that...:o
when i did the first post i didn't know about the ortega, at that time the name ortega was for me the dutch passion hybrid, who is NL#1 x ortega, it's only after somebody send me a link of the shantibaba's ortega.
and when i say mns don't have pure nl in the catalogue i'm mind the REAL official catalogue of Mr Nice Seedbank.

Well I hate to admit it but I had the NL strain and let it die off. I had a scare in 91' that caused me to dump everything fast. I received the clones from a lady in Bothell Wa. Her name was Sue, She grew 60 under 6 1000w and I have to say I cry every time I see or hear about this strain. I have pictures of clones and budded plants. The plants grew fast and very frosty coated buds. Fat juicy large buds. Powerful smoke. I loved getting all the trim from her grows as they were lazy and i would find nice buds in there. Then we would pick through it for all smokeables. After that I would crush it in a shoe box lid and shake it down and then scrape off the tricombes into a pile and add it to a hit. It would take your breath away.

I have lived in the northwest all my life. Next to the old school weeds from the 80s and some Thia I bought in Monroe that was the very best smoke I have every had. A truley 1 hit wonder. I would feel like I was on my way to a drunk. The NL was a fun plant to grow and produced mass smoke for you efforts.

i think you will find its were he sourced the other northern lights that could hold problems. its not a verified nl line not once has Dr atomic sead were he sourced it. other than a plant that comes from north west British Columbia. do you know how Meany people say they have the real deal this and that? that's the only point jessie pointed out. yes Dr atomic nl might be the real deal northern lights then again it could be a very good cross. you sead Mr nice doesn't have a real northern lights well i would rather trust Shanti than Dr atomic. i know he breeds with Neville the name behind all pure nl strains. if Shanti says Ortega is a ibl of nl from seed Nev had from 1987 that he gave Shanti to grow out i believe ever word he sead about it being a real deal nl. so your saying Dr atomic has nl but Shanti and Nev dont OK.

I don't want to start any crap here, I just want to bring some light to this subject. Dr. Atomic has quality genetics and his NL is one of the best representations of the original. He took the NL5 from Neville and crossed it with the original NL which he sourced in British Colombia to preserve genetic diversity.

I went to the US to pick up the original US NL5. It wasn't in the same league as mine. The NL boys from the US came to me for my NL5 offspring. It was much better than the original.

Hi Nev

So if the original NL5 wasn't that great, where did yours come from? Did you have some NL5 seeds and picked the best plant from those?

Mine were from that plant (US NL5) and all of the brothers and sisters seemed typical of the line, except one. I expect it was a throwback. It's hard to glean information about breeding from underground sources, but I can assure you that I've spent a lot of time analysing the results of the original NL lines. My NL5 seemed to have characteristics of NL2 and NL1, but had completely dropped any Thai influence from the mother. If you have bred enough plants containing indica, you will have seen some of these throwback indicas. They are not all great, but the short indica like 8 week anomaly will pop up.

Hi all,
As with many area's in the world, there is an underground drug culture in my part of the tundra which has for sometime exuded an appeal many people have found intriging. Thus certain varieties of cannabis have become somewhat legendary in the area, with notable varieties such as White Rhino, White Widow, Silver Pearl etc (some more localized names are also popular, all of them of Dutch descent ultimately) widely known and respected by those connected enough to share in the joys of harvest. And thats just one level of a multi-level complex of stoner interest in the community which all ultimately lends itself to the agricultural driven enterprises of the area.

Northern Lights is one such name to really receive quite a bit of notoriety, especially during the mid to late '90s where the strain enjoyed quite a bit of fame at local parties. Though hardly anything new, as both Northern Lights and Skunk#1 were varieties nearly all hardcore stoners held in high regard at the time for many years prior however. While the trend of naming good weed popular names is hardly a new phenomena, it wasnt nearly as wide spread then as we see it today however because everything at the time was called White Widow lol. So a few examples of Northern Lights which were available commercially then stick out to me as varieties I would love to acquire in seed form once again in an attempt to recapture a moment in time. Though I am very comfortable with what I do have, as its a blessing in itself just to have access to superior genetics at all, its always nice to invite new friends over to your garden!

As Ive mentioned many times, a specific example of marijuana presented to me as Northern Lights has always stood out to me. It (the buds) was braided in nature from memory, much like that of a well kept womans hair braided into a poney tail. It was light green and well resinated from memory, and it was damn near a 10/10 on anyones scale in terms of quality green. But I have seen many different examples of Northern Lights in the past, all good, some real ass kickers who reminded me a great deal of MNS Super Silver Haze in fact!

Heya brock1, I apologize for posting this. I reread what you wrote, and you're right that we have no idea where his cut came from. I hope I didn't rub ya the wrong way. I just thought you were talking trash on Dr. Atomic, which I see now is not the case.

N, i'm very curious to know details about which characteristics you found to be better. My experience with NL is limited, but I smoked what was said to be NL recently for the first time, and I think I would make it my go-to smoke if I had it. Really liked the stuff. Thanks N.

no problem G4G i think dr atomic version of nl is good mate i cant really call it at all. as strains go i think he's done a better job then most.;) i am not here to bash people's work just find the truth and shear it with everyone its relevant to. if you don't agree you have every right not to mate. i am not here to try taking people right to disagree.:)

i haven't looked in here in a while sorry if i made you feel bad in anyway mate. i know it can be hard finding info on mns new strain. its down to the fact i think shanti like using average joe description of strain. when there first released there ist one till a few people grow them out and do a grow report. it's good to get a idea of what to expect from normal growers though that cant grow 1000's of plant from 1 strain. so i know it's not you fault sorry if i seemed to bite your head of.:)

Hi all,
When it comes to marijuana, Northern Lights is an almost universally known name for quality ganja. I can remember being a young lad in the bad lands, not yet with a bong hit under my belt even, and knowing that Northern Lights was the good shit! So after my first known encounter with a variety presented to my friends and I as Northern Lights, (and probably having smoked NL hybrids unknowingly for sometime) I naturally developed an interest in how to obtain marijuana like that Northern Lights on as consistent of a basis as possible lol.

With time, I learned that Northern Lights and a man named Nevil Schoenmaker had a long and storied history with one another. For a very long time period, we as cannabis board posters were not privileged to speak with Nevil in the way we are now, and in fact there was/is a consertive effort for years by the powers that be (Skunkman and company) to brush under the rug nearly everything Nevil had accomplished in the Cannabis World. Sam Skunkman and his various alias's, accomplices, brown noses and the like (only god knows for sure) often took credit for nearly everything in the marijuana industry from hash methodology to strain breeding, discovery etc. all while conveniently ignoring, diminishing or out right lying about the contributions Nevil in fact brought to the cannabis industry and marijuana culture the world over. With Northern Lights being perhaps one of his most influential workings in my opinion to date. A variety of legendary status, widely used in the marijuana breeding world for over two decades and quite common in the United States in hybrid form or better from Coast to Coast. Hardly a new phenomena either, without Nevil and his pioneering achievements at 'The Seed Bank', Hollands first mail order cannabis seed company, today's gene pool, culture and industry would be nothing as it stands today. A man who has lead and extraordinary life, information on the inevitable release of a Hollywood film based on Nevil's life and times is unavailable at press, be sure to check back for further details at a later date.

When I first started to get involved in the marijuana scene, one of the first gravitating forces for many is the stoner porn magazine High Times. At this point in my life, Shantibaba was coincidentally holding it down at the Green House in Amsterdam and absolutely dominating shit. Even an entire ocean and world away, in a tiny little town in bum fuck egypt, U.S.A we knew full well who the Green House Seed Company was and that they were running shit! Due in large part to the ads, articles and updates of events within the industry in High Times. So flash forward quite sometime into the future, I discovered the guy responsible for making The Green House Seed Company what it was in the '90s had moved on to Mr. Nice Seeds and that he and some cat named Nevil lol had worked closely together and that Shanti has access to the pioneering breeder and merchant in the industry's genetics. With the pieces starting to fall into place, and only an honest desire to acquire the real legendary strains like White Widow, Hindu Kush, Northern Lights etc. the rest as they say is history.

I have no doubt that Mr. Nice Seeds is the best option for anyone out there in cyber land reading this to acquire the closest and most legitimate thing to Northern Lights as you're going to find in the modern industry today. A quick search around the net yields video and pictures that will leave you astonished as to the growing capacity of the MNS facilities and those who run the show! Lending itself to the best selection of genetics possible, from lines tracing their origin without any bullshit lies or propaganda so commonly found in today's industry to the original sources as to assure the customer that they are getting the real deal. Not just a poorly made copy of a once legendary line! Or worse yet, something else entirely labeled a popular name in a seed for cash scheme!

Nevil's original lines, which revolutionalized the industry and are still industry staples to this very day are readily available in as of original and true form as you're going to find anywhere else in the marijuana seed industry. Shantibaba is himself responsible for some of the most revolutionary lines of modern times as well, including the real White Widow aka Black Widow, and its many legendary hybrids in Great White Shark (Shark Shock) and White Rhino (Medicine Man). Many of todays more popular varieties, which have names such as The White, OG Kush, Diesel etc. are all in fact hybrids of many of the lines which trace their true origins right back to Shantibaba and Nevil. Both of whom can be found here at Mr. Nice Seeds today.

just when i was sure what strain i was going to get i come across this thread, dame this site is good? that g13xnl looks very tasty:D

from the link above......

The story goes that that all the various Northern Lights plants that were given to Neville Schoenmaker at the Seed Bank were female clones. Soon after, many new plants showed up on the Seed Bank list, including several different Northern Lights strains. This is where the history begins to get a bit hazy. How exactly these new seeds came to be is unclear but apparently Neville Schoenmaker used the plants that he got from the Indian to create new hybrids by further crossing them to some males of Afghani origin. He might have acquired them from the same source as the females but the Northern Lights males were never labeled, so their history remains unclear. The best guess is that Neville Schoenmaker created the new seeds by further hybridizing and inbreeding the plants that he acquired from the Indian to their old stock. Northern Lights #1 was described as a true breeding Afghani IBL (inbred line), suggesting that it contained none of the Thai Sativa that was later incorporated into some of the Northern Lights strains. At what point the Thai Sativa was infused into the genetic lineage is however unclear. Most likely it was bred into the Northern Lights #2 hybrid at some point. Regardless of their origin or genetic makeup, two particular males labeled Northern Lights #1 and Northern Lights #2 are clearly mentioned as the fathers of many new plants in a Seed Bank catalogue from the 1980’s. Northern Lights #2, a wonderfully potent Northern Lights #1-Hindu Kush hybrid, is still offered by Dutch Passion under the name Oasis.

I met the Indian to obtain the US NL5 cutting two years after getting the seeds. This was the only NL cutting that I ever got. If I ever sold seeds from this US cut, it wasn't for long. It was already superseded before it got it.

I never grew that particular clone but it smoked like the best hashish . Back in my growing days ( 1996? ) me and my grow partner sent away to BC ( Emery ) for 60 BCSC Northern Lights # 5 seeds .

hi,
this seedbank are still selling that strain, i did buy a pack to make a grow test versus other nl strain like dr atomic, ssb, ortega.

i haven't read the whole thread yet, but i have to add that the first non-bagseed grows i did were with NL originally from sensi, but sourced through a friend from Schenectady NY. block buster potency (we were new to indicas in MN, so it came as a double skull fuck LOL), low smell in grow, great smell in the bag, great vigor, almost as uniform as clones from seed. And the best thing is they were idiot/bullet-proof. I could not get any to throw male flowers using light contamination. this was in 88-89. i lost all the seeds i had left in my move south...left all of them in a hot car in the Texas sun for a week before i realized where i had left them. :(

I would love to get my hands on some of these gems again.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to stop in, your kind words are all very appreciated. A few years ago now, having the opportunity to write for a small handful of magazines, I put together several articles which were all born out of the idea of bringing as much credible information to a centralized location as possible on a few subjects which were of interest to me. Up until that point, a great deal of information was scattered about the internet, and knowing that a great deal of us are interested in the back ground of many of today's most respected lines, it seemed natural to attempt to open up the picture on a few subjects.

Interesting link cox, when I read the article, and several others located at the website, they all reminded me quite a bit of my own work...

Someone out there should be very proud of their efforts, well done.

Sorry for my ignorance but where can you buy NL #5 @ Mr. Nice ? I guess I don't see it listed .

Hi Black,
There are several NL5 hybrids available, though they may not be listed in the strains section located at the top of the forum here. If you're still curious, a quick pm to Shanti should do the trick.
