Mango Haze: Selection In Small Spaces

Hi Canna
I hope she smokes as good as she looks
Cheers KL

Hiya, Kangalunacy.

The bud is dry enough to roll doobies since yesterday and I am super happy with the results. It tastes different every time I smoke it so I'm probably a couple of weeks from something consistent. The potency is outstanding though.

It is so far the energetic/motivational head change I've been looking for.

I will report more after a little curing time.

Peace.

Canna, those buds are much leafier than any of my Mango Haze, and I had ten different ladies. They were the easiest buds I have ever trimmed in my life. Some nugs were simply 3-5 snips and I was done trimming it. A welcomed reprieve after enduring Sam's Haze/Skunk, which is the leafiest strain Ive yet to grow. Were most of your ladies that leafy?

Hiya, Jonny Rotten.

The pic is pretty representative of how my MH usually looks. The trim work is about average though it's not like most plants I've trimmed. I'll take some pre-manicure pics when I do my 8 week harvest so you can see.

Got a pic of your MH that you can share?

Peace.

Ive still got one lady flowering now. She's got to be at 130 days or so, but nice fat chunky buds. Still has maybe 15% white pistils left now. She's finishing up her third bloom cycle. Ill also post some pics of the finished buds from other ladies that have been curing for 3 weeks-a month.

I completely agree with the energetic, motivational high you mentioned. The majority of my ladies have this type of high and are great for any type of work, and social settings. All around really nice weed. The potency doesn't floor me, but the affects that weed has on me is more important than sheer potency. Of course there was alot more resin on my ladies halfway through flowering, than were at harvest time, so I clearly lost something along the way. Im gonna try to improve that this time around. Fingers crossed!

Hey Canna, I got some pics for you. This is from my last lady that is flowering. I was examining her and noticed that the buds actually out grew many of the trim leaves and swallowed them! Makes for a breeze when it comes to trimming if I can't see those buried leaves.

I noticed when looking at your bud and mine, is that your calyxes aren't as swollen. You mentioned a harvest date of 8 weeks, which I find to be too early. I had one lady that I think can come in at 10 weeks, with nicely swollen calyxes, but I think you may want to push your ladies a few extra weeks.

I would gather you are chopping after the first bloom cycle is complete. It seems to happen around day 50-60 of flowering. If you wait another week or two, you should see a flush of new white pistils, and the calyxes will start to swell more now, and then you can opt to harvest after the second cycle or go for a third like I did with one of my ladies.

The last picture is from one of my heavier yielders I believe. She produced nice chunky buds. The skunk influence really comes through in these ladies when given enough time. The bud structure is nearly identical to Shit/Haze I grew out before.

Right on, Jonny.

Your pics look allot like my 14 week pheno. My 8 week pheno doesn't really do any fox-tailing like that nor does she blow up with new pistils. She's pretty much 100% cloudy trichs and orange pistils by week 8 though. She does swell a little more with time but I haven't found it to be worth the wait. I will experiment with that in the future though. I harvested her again today so maybe I'll let this next round of budding go a little longer.

Thanks for the tips and sharing the pics. She looks great. I've got a 14 week pheno getting it's first 12 hour night tonight so I'll be into some of that action in the weeks to come.:D

Peace.

I have a lady that doesn't do any foxtailing either. Different looking buds than the rest. I imagine its the NL coming through. Im gonna run that lady longer next time around and see how she swells up compared to the foxtailing ones.

Enjoy your 14 weeker coming up. I hope the run goes smoothly. Im a month into 12/12 on my second run of 3 ladies, with more to come as they reach the appropriate size. I can't wait to see how they turn out. I can already see Im gonna have much shorter compact plants this time around. Score. From seed, my 10 inch plants stretched to 4 feet or so within a month. What a hassle that was. lol

14 Week Pheno Day 2

Alright, so I got a Potzilla in the flowering cab along with the current crop which I will be harvesting for the 3rd and final time within a week.

I'm doing something different with the feeding regime this time around. Instead of seeing how hot I can feed Mango Haze, I'm going to see how mildly I can feed it.

As I've talked about before, overfeeding/underfeeding can be determined by which direction the pH swings with the DM Gold. On my last run I was able to keep the pH from moving practically at all which means I was operating at the high end of the acceptable range. What I would like to do this run is set my pH at 5.5 and have it drift up to 6.0, +/- .1, upon 2/3 reservoir depletion in hopes to achieve some vertical growth by operating at the low end of the acceptable range.

To help with that, I am running this plant in the bottom half only of one of my hydro units that I call "Vortex DWC Mode" which drops my capacity down from 8 gallons to 4. The reduced volume will cause more rapid changes in the nutrient solution which will give me a more detailed analysis as to how she is feeding. Once I have the recipe, I can go back up to 8 gallon or "vacation" mode.;)

Running in 4 gallon mode is going to double my maintenance intervals for 14 weeks. The good news is that this hydro will gain me 8 inches of vertical height which I hope to need this round. 4 foot 6 inches is what I got to work with.

She's been on 500 ppm flowering nutes for 5 days. The pH went up to 6.3 and ppm's down to 460 so 600 ppm would have been a better strength for this plant at this stage. I'm gonna shoot for about 650 when I work on her tonight.

The other obvious change this round from the previous is the change to single tree style as opposed to multiple-plant canopy/SCROG style. The surface area of a 4 foot tall cone is about 10 square feet whereas the canopy style is only 6 so the change should cause a nice jump in yield. My cab is best suited for a single plant so I'm gonna rock it that way from here on out. I'm setting up a second flowering area for shorter/faster plants so I can dedicate the cab to Potzilla pheno's.:D

I'm addicted to these 14 week 5Hz pheno's so I want to make them my specialty. The way I see it, this plant can out-yield any faster plant but the room has to be designed specifically for the pheno. So if I have to build a room specifically for it then my only chance for variety is more 14 week pheno's, right?

So, for the sake of building up a collection of Potzilla's, I'm going to attempt a post-harvest reversal on this plant and do a few feminized out-crosses with the pollen in hopes of breeding a few.

I think that pretty much sums up the outlook on this run. I'm excited that this girl is starting off with really nice geometry and lots of vigorous side branching. She should be a beauty when she does her thing. She is 2 inches of stalk and has 12 internodes from there to the 8 inch mark. The cab is gonna light her up nice and evenly so she should grow pretty symmetrically which would really be something to be had. Finger's X'ed!

Peace.

Day 14 Of Flowering

The 14 week pheno is doing great. I had her on a 650 ppm diet for the past week which went down to 450 yesterday so I replaced the resi with 850 ppm yesterday and this morning she shot up to 950 so I diluted back down to 650. I was having to make pH adjustments every couple of days so I thought the formula could use some improvements so I increased my ratio of primary nutes and using less additives. I should know pretty quickly if I should have done the opposite.;)

attachment.php

It took about 7 days for her to shift gears which is faster than my previous runs with her. She's been growing almost an inch/day ever since.

I couldn't be happier with how well she is doing. This will be my best run ever if things continue the way they are now.:D

In other news I finally pulled the last of 3 harvests after 9 weeks of flowering and 5 weeks of flushing. Johnny Rotten is on point with the fact that the buds swell and get a little skunky with the late side of the harvest window. I've got a couple ounces from weeks 7,8 and 9 so I will report on the differences when it's all cured. Total weight looks to be about 7+ ounces.:D

Dig the root mass after it was all said and done:

Looks like I'm going to have to add the lower half of my hydro at some point since there ain't much room to circulate nutrient through that mess.

Peace.

EDIT: Yeah, 650 was still too high. Knocked her down to 500 ppm. Peace.

Gave her a little hair cut today:

I basically stripped down everything that wasn't growing vigorously and was left with a flowering top at the end of each of 21 branches.:)

Peace.

EDIT: Thought I'd throw in a before picture since I flipped the page.

This was only 3 days ago:

Day 21 of Flowering

So she's at 19" tall and feeding between 400-500 ppm. 500 ppm is actually pretty hot. She seems to be digging it right at 440-450 but will suck that down to 380ppm in a few days. Very precise feeder this one is. It's amazing to see her thrive on practically nothing.

Peace.

Edit: I had to quadruple check this. This was her just 8 days ago! OMFG!

28150d1327606289-mango-haze-selection-small-spaces-pic_0374.jpg

I dare say that her haircut had something to do with her blooming so fast. Perhaps the slow achieving growth holds her back and by removing it she is all systems go.

Cannatari, perhaps your leaf removal affected apical dominance within the plant and allowed for quicker flowering.

I had something similar happen with Shit/Haze when the main cola grew into the lights and singed the tip pretty good. This caused the main cola to foxtail into 4 small separate buds doing their own thing. Not only did this change the plants bud structure, she was easily two weeks ahead of her siblings when I harvested them. Her colas were so much more mature than the rest of her siblings. My thoughts are that I affected apical dominance by singing the apical meristem resulting in faster flowering as Auxin production coming to a halt sooner.

Ive got some pics that lady. I hope you dont mind me sharing them.

This plant is 75% Skunk/25% Haze hybrid I made using Sams Haze/Skunk and Shantis Shit. She's 79 days old from seed at harvest day. I started flowering around week three. Very faster maturer for 80 days from seed. Fastest Ive ever seen. Ive been meaning to see if I can replicate this with some clones of Shit as well as a control. Once I get my broad mites under control Ill give it a go. Or perhaps someone else is willing to give it a go?

Hiya, Johnny.

I just looked back through my journal to confirm if she is faster this time around or not. It looks like I am a few days ahead if any than my first go with this pheno but I think it's a matter of her being more developed and not more mature. Either way it's splitting hairs and nothing dramatic.

Your ShitHz looks great. I can really see the Shit coming through. You probably got yourself a cross that as good as anything out there. Good job! Don't mind you posting it at all. My next seed run will probably be Shit so I'm stoked to see your success with it in a breeding project. Keep up the good work!

Peace.

Thanks for the compliment on the Shit/Haze. Shit definitely made its mark on calyx size and flowering times in this cross. My Haze/Skunk mom had small calyx's and using Shit increased them significantly in all my ladies. Unfortunately only 3 out of 13 had true Shit bud structure. Ive still have the two males in my garden and I dont see any reason to get rid of them. :D

Enjoy Shit on your next run. You're gonna love the smells. Its some stinky Shit. I have one F2 in flowering now, and Im so excited. Its been many months since Ive gotten to flower a Shit. Ill show you what you're in for with some future pics :).

Its time to tend to my ladies, so have a great day all.

Hiya, Elmer.

She was a little hot this week at 650 ppm but her demands did increase as opposed to previous weeks.

Peace.

Mango Haze Day 35

I bumped her up to 650 ppm for the past week and the ppm/pH remained unchanged through the week which is an indication of me having fed her a little on the hot side. She is up to 27" tall as well.

Basically immediately after my last update did she start throwing single-blade leaves and lots of sugar. Smells like sweet mango fruit.:D

She's looking great Cannatari. I was curious if you have seen intersex traits with any of your ladies, and was it reduced/increased/or same in future runs? All of my ladies went hermie on me, but weren't in great health and had broad mites. My first two runs of two ladies has had issues. Im hoping my second run of a third lady has no problems. Tends to happen in day 60+.

Ive a few more ladies to flower soon a second time. They're very healthy, so maybe Ill do better this upcoming time.

Hiya, Jonny.

Thanks for the nice compliment.

Only one time did one of these girls herm on me and that was on the 8 week pheno at the end of a perpetual harvest attempt. We pulled bud off that plant for 2 months after the initial harvest and once there were no fan leaves, the buds started developing nanners.

I have called this the "Post Harvest Reversal" and I'm going to try it on my current run with the 14 week pheno. I think the key may be to feed it when you would otherwise be flushing so maybe flushing could help you avoid an unwanted reversal in your situation. I'm not smoking crack when I say that my 8 week pheno only needs to be fed for the first 30 days of flowering.

What is your grow style and what do you feed them?

Peace.

If I were Jewis, this would be my minora:

28674d1329445206-mango-haze-selection-small-spaces-pic_0443.jpg

I think you are right on with the feeding thought, and I think we are a product of our North Amercian culture, whereas the Europeans may have learned it easier. Our Indica programming and 1000K light influnce, has to be rebooted when it comes to the lovely hz plant.

I agree you do not need to feed your buds 1400 ppm to make big buds or give them massive amount of kw to do same.

The amazing power of the sativa...

I noticed that when I was in week 6 to around 8 and flushed using my rockwool medium (around 200ppm) that my hz or sat lines in the loose bales would through nanners too.

Keep up the great work C and have a good weekend all!

Chana

P.S. If I were also Jewis, I would rock my yamaka to the side a little...:D

Hiya, Chana.

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous how light these plants feed. This pheno spent the first month of flowering on not much more than a cloning formula. It's getting to where I have to consider using RO water since my 100 ppm tap water is 1/4 of the formula.

I'm curious to know if and when this girl I've got going now will stop feeding. I would predict around 7-8 weeks which means plain water for as many as 7 weeks!

The answers are coming...

Peace.

I grow almost all sat heavy hybrids and I use a ppm of 250 until the last few weeks of flower and then just plain water. I used to use 5 -10 times as much fertilizer but it never made my grows any better. A bottle of flora nova last me forever now, lol.
