Apparently that's from The Vanished Library by Luciano Canfora. I learned of the quote through Carl Sagan's Cosmos, I haven't read The Vanished Library. Read that quote a long time ago , never forgot it. There's no doubt we could've made it to the stars by now if that hadn't happened. "Everything is as it should be", I suppose ( I always thought it was the Dalai Lama who said that one, but Google says otherwise. I still like and believe it).
