jaybutta... is there anyway to ask another question... Where is the Afghani line with all the stink that DJ used?

On another note.. smoked some Rose out of Eugene last week.. very distinct flavor, not bad on the stone either.

Hey there Pufnstuff...please tell us more about RoseBud's flavor/smells/effect...:D

I cannot really recall him talking about the Afghani line he used...I'm sorry...the only reference to Afghani that I remember is it's impact on the Jamaican gene pool...DJ said that the importation of Afghani tainted the otherwise quality sativa genepool in Jamaica...perhaps someone else can help...great question...jay:)

I watched the pbs special a while back, I have to agree that it was excellent.

On the topic of the handheld loupes, I have a 15x just like http://www.indigo.com/magnify/gphmgnfy/triplet-geology-lens.html. I think mine was labelled sunlight supply, and was a little cheaper, but it looks very similar. When I took out the 15x and the 30x in the store I did not notice a 2x distance in magnification, it seemed less. On that link it says the 20 and 30x have a more limited depth of field. I liked the working distance of the 15x much more, you didn't have to get so close to what you are looking at so as to touch it. Not only does it allow you to look at trichomes and other parts of the plant close up, it make identifying pests and infestations much easier. Some bugs are so small you cannot see them with the naked eye, carefully scanning with a loupe is the easiest way.

The ones that light up from radioshack, the pocket microscopes, are probably more useful for determining trichome maturity. Basically you want to pull off a little piece and put it under the small pocket microscopes. Same with the cheap video microscopes. They are more useful for examining finished bud or test samples. But with a loupe you can examine the plants in place, and get in close and look at the dirt.

I would recommend every grower have a 15x loupe, I use mine all the time, I couldn't imagine not having one. It would also be useful to have a higher magnification pocket microscope with an LED light, but they are different tools and have different uses.

You could probably use the loupe with glasses, because you can hold the loupe right next to what you are examining and have your eye a foot or more away from it, and it still works well. You don't have to stick your face right in the eye piece. I don't know if the illuminated pocket scopes would work so well with glasses.

Thanks for the info, SmokeOn;)...I never realized how using a magnifier actually makes everything easier...it always looked to be such a pain in the ass...jay:)

Bubbleman's Bubble Bags

I could not agree more!! I just had me some Blue Dream bubble. Awwsome!!

GB

Hey Greyybeard...welcome to MNS...:D

That sounds fu-king incredible...next time, if you can, post a pic...I'd love to see what Blue Dream bubble looks like...which reminds me...at the class, we actually surfed IC because DJ wanted to show us pics taken by Bubbleman...he's a fan of Bubbleman's work...he said that is the easiest way to create quality hash...jay;)

I found the Rosebud to hit instantaneously, the smoke felt very indica. Flavors had a depth along the floral side of flavors. Didn't have the legs that the Blueberry is famous for. Reminded me more of S.O.L. chronic of the old school than any DJ I have tried, especially in look.

Nice reading Jaybutta.
Just why almost every of your posts are edited for couple hours later or even day later ?

My notes were raw...there were quite a few misspelled words...I wanted to make sure I posted accurate info...also in my haste I forgot to thank DJ Short...jay:o

Go For It!

Hi all

Thanks for the welcome Jay. Iv been arround for a little while, and I love this forum. I haven't done any grow logs before, and I was going to wait until I got my first strain from Shanti, but I have 3 BlueDream clones that were just gifted to me. If you all would like I can make the Bluedream thread. Let me know, otherwise i will wait for the Shit and Shark. Thanks all.

GB

I can't speak for everyone, but I'd love to see a thread of your Blue Dreams...perhaps someone will come on here and post Blue Dream's true lineage too...jay:D

The Class Itself

Hey Greybeard,

I guess you're right...sorry about that...:o

The class was very laid back...there were about 12-15 other people there...some had to leave early...some came late...I really had no idea what to expect, in general...meeting DJ Short was never anything I'd ever spent one second thinking about, so I was nervous...grabbed my green tea and took a seat...there were about 20 chairs in the room, 10 on each side with a walkway in between...it seemed very much like a college class to me...lots of little group discussions...

He had his laptop set up and he showed us the syllabus as he went through his talk, as well as pics of his plants, including pics of his kids, when they were young, standing next to oldschool landrace genetics...he took questions as he went, but on the first day he mostly went through the entire syllabus...we took three breaks each day...one for lunch and two for stopping and talking...he never left...his lunch was brought to him, so there was actual education happening even during the breaks...this was when a few of us really got to know DJ a bit better...instead of the full class, there were only about 4 or 5 of us conversing...

Many of the questions from the actual class were very basic...the class itself was made up of people from all walks of life...all colors/backgrounds...different levels of experience...caregivers, dispensary workers, dispensary owners...newbies...people wanting to transition from chemical ferts to organics...and I think there were a couple of hardcore commercial op types, but that's just my guess...in any case, some people were well versed in certain areas of cannabis, and some people really didn't know all that much but were curious to know more...each person there was a different as the next...eclectic is the word I'm looking for...it created a surreal atmosphere...felt like we were talking with a tenured college professor...he fielded all questions and he was extremely nice about it...

The second day was more laid back than the first, and much of the time was spent talking about what DJ talked about the first day...he dropped a lot of heavy sh-t on the first day, describing old school P1s and landraces he'd had experiences with over the years...the famous Chocolate & Juicy Fruit Thais, Highland & Lowland Thais, the Oaxaca & Colombian Golds, the African Black Magic and many more...he was also asked about some of the more notorious members of the cannabis community, but those questions and his answers to them are irrelevant in the bigger picture...he helped me see that...it was only the 3rd class he's taught...I think the people that took his first two classes must have been in complete shock...having two full days with a breeder who welcomes ANY question was an absolutely incredible experience...as I believe I said in the beginning, I spent much of my time thinking I was listening to Shanti (or Neville:)) himself...

Simply put, the environment was incredibly comfortable, the class was tiny, and the teacher was excellent...the material could've been a bit more in depth, but I was very happy anyway...if DJ ever wants to give a deeper class than that, I know it's something he could easily do...once it's legalized, I'm sure he's going to put his trademark on his strains...after that, he can pretty much do anything he wants to, I think...personally, I just wanted to see the mind behind the fantastic strain Blueberry, and meet the only other true breeder I would ever want to meet besides Shanti and Neville...the notes/concepts/contacts/etc were icing on the cake...

I wasn't disappointed in the slightest...excellent class from top to bottom...it, like this forum, proves that great minds attract great people...that's my word...jay:)

Class Materials

Hey Dawn...good to read you...we got a syllabus to keep, as well as some info on a few of his strains...the only strain info I got pertained to Whitaker Blues...;)

Only two of us took thorough notes during the class...most people just went to interact with DJ and pick his brain...they mostly had specific growing questions...it was basically just hanging out with DJ and listening to his various experiences, then occasionally getting in a question or two...much of the information covered I didn't even bother to write down, as I knew most of the people I would be relaying the information to---the ol' MNS Crew---have more than a basic knowledge of cannabis...in a nutshell, it's 2 days with DJ and you can ask anything you want...it is not easy listening to growers ask about dealing with fungus gnats effectively and building organic soil when you're hoping he'll give the key to unlocking any breeding project you may want to try...the time spent in between lessons, when he sat and smoked his tobacco pipe while covering topics not normally discussed in his class, was the best...if anyone reading this gets to go one day, don't leave when the class takes a break...get your tea/coffee/candy/cookies and stay and talk with DJ...worth every damn penny and then some...money wellll spent...jay:)

Hi Jay im new on this sight and the two threads iv read so far which have been the one started by Neville and this one have been fascinating to say the least. Thanks for taking the time to post the info up. One of the things that interests me is the tolerance breaks he likes to go on for 5 days. What does R and D mean when he says he never wakes and bakes. Thanks again:)

Thanks for taking the time to read it, fucker...:D

"R & D" means Research and Development...DJ only "wakes n bakes" when he is assessing a strain that he's working on breeding/perfecting...otherwise it is not something he regularly engages in...DJ is a strong advocate for everyone taking a break once in a while...if possible...it was part of our discussion on moderation versus abuse in the consumption of cannabis...incidentally, it's recently been announced that DJ will be giving another class on October 9th...go if you can...jay:D
