I agree on 24/0 being a bad veg idea...I did this for vegging when I very first started, with an HPS no less :) I found my plants grew quicker on 18/6 than they did on 24/0.

Not sure why he feels like the light timing thing is a trade secret...seems a bit silly to me to talk about helping medical users but then lord over the fact that you've found a superior light timing scheme that you're unwilling to disclose.

ESS

this is why I was trying to get someone to ask his veg cycle timing. someone said no question is off limits for him, if someone just asked we could know then..

Yeah, I have used just 24 and 12 for most of my grow career. Recently switched to 20/4 for veg just to save some money on electricity.

BTW, Dj's Flo puts out a ton of preflowers in veg and will flower on 16 hours of light.

Iv always read that you put plants for 12/12 for flowering. And I also thought that you vegetated for just 18 hours, does anyone know what the benefits are of giving your plants 24 hours of light during the vegetate stage. ?

hi all

I remember your post on that '69 haze stock first female you had from the first batch you planted, that flowered for 9+ months and never really did finish.
Nevil said:
It didn't have much resin and after 9 months flowering, with no end in sight, I chopped it. It seem the most impractical plant I'd ever grown. I didn't keep a cutting.
I believe it might have flowered quite faster and more profoundly with 11/13 , 10/14 , 9/15 etc and would finish much earlier.
Like probably within 18-26weeks max as I 've never heard or seen plants (and more specifically hazes) that go much longer than that when grown in nature.
My point is that maybe that plant might been seen as way less impractical if grown under less 12hrs light.

Personally I really like the reduced light regime for flowering sativas indoors , from what I ve seen helps with stretch as well as with long sexing and flowering times. Plus some strains/plants are well reported to need more than 12 hrs darkness to really start flowering.

Hey BH,

I'm not sure I follow your post , how do you save electricity by using 24/0 instead of 18/6? Do you refer to the energy used by fans etc? If not hows that?

From what I understand the only advantage with 24/0 is that you give more light per day so you get faster growth per day. So basically faster daily growth rates.
But to get same amount of biomass to be produced I believe it takes about the same energy used for lighting no matter how you spread it over time.

As far as veg cycles go I dont really use 24/0 often but mostly give a dark cycle. I ve heard about the possible negative impacts on the plant from the constant lights on (but not seen much proof to be honest ) but real reason I dont prefer it over ,say, 18/6 is I like to give my plants a break for a few hours a day (esp when using HIDs). Helps in the sense that I can place lights lower and avoid yellowing/light bleaching cause the plant gets some recovery time . Plus it helps cool down the room and equipment a bit. Which is useful for restricted spaces and/or for growing in really hot areas/summer grows etc.

One great advantage that 24/0 may have over 18/6 is that the plants may grow less stretchy with 24/0 along with growing faster per day.So I m not sure what other advantages 24/0 has to really offer over 18/6.

Hi l33t

You misunderstood me I think. I was using 24 hours of light to veg, I am now using 20 hours of light so saving 4 hours per day of electricity. Seeing no difference. I've used 18/6 many times with halides, whenever I've done 24/0 it was with fluoros.

Reason I am using 20 hours rather than 18 is I'm keeping some mothers from esbe's outdoor strains going in order to have cuttings ready for next year's guerilla attempt and I have seen some of esbe's stuff flower on 17-18 hours, I don't want these stressed by having mixed hormonal signals due to being close to the threshold of their critical dark period.

hi British hempire

I misread your post! though you had wrote you switched to 24/0.My bad..so excuse my mistake..and thanks for clarifying.

Dear L33t,

on a more serious note than my previous post in this thread:

For the first days (2w) of veg in a pot inside the grow room, where you'll flower those babies, I would also recommend 18/6.
For mothers and clones I guess 24h is better - there's also something to do with the stretching of plants between internodes (once you flower them) as add on to the "get faster growth per day". 24/0 would harm plants that are flowering but to my knowledge it would not harm at veg stage (might influence plant growth - but not harm).

I learned from Shanti what you say about 11/13 , 10/14 , 9/15 on Sativas and I have seen the great results you talk about (flowering of course). Your amazing photo gallery on MNS also demonstrates that you "were lucky" with some of those strains too :)

But I guess it's all out there as heard of and would need to be investigated more seriously (also checking on those effects on different genetics).

Now I know that also N. uses it as a standard (added the info to my grow database :) )

just my 2 cents - all the best,

hiya admini

yeah most grow reports show that in practice 24/0 does not cause any problems in veg. Nevil has a lot of growing experience and has kept mother plants for decades too under 24/0 so his opinion is highly valued on the matter.
But like you , I would love to see some more research on this and with many different types of strains as you suggested.

Btw just to make sure I understand what you mean here above, are you saying that plants that were vegged under 24/0 show less stretch or more stretch between nodes when they are eventually flowered?

cheers

No problem, I figured you'd just missed the subtle difference between 24/0 and 20/4, it's easy to misread numbers, I do it all the time. Especially when you're smoking killer Hazes as I suspect you are!

I knew you were going to squeeze more out of that one.... :)
My feeling is they stretch out better once they are rooted and placed to veg/flower. So I tried to explain that with internodes to say that I see more distance, better structured plant and more vigourous plants (maybe some also kind of smooth-turbo effect) - but then again just a feeling.

But I would also add that by keeping 24 hours light at mothers and clones level you create more uniformed growing conditions (temperature/humidity = less variations equal less problems with potential pathogens, bacteria ect...), moisture at leaf level also is better balanced without interrupting light ect

Using pure capitalistic standards one could question why turn down production when your can leave the factory running for 24 hours :)

How about someone offers to produce a million clones with different systems and then posts some statistically relavant data demonstrating whatever stuff (here on MNS forums, of course)... :)

All the best,
admini

I know this is an old thread but I've been offline and
I'd love to continue this conversation. A few things:

1. What about the law of diminishing returns? I thought
plants can only process so much light per day, No/Yes?

2. Plants kept under 24/0 must be undergoing some level
of stress as this is not anything close to a normal light
regimen. This would only show over a long period of time?
Most people would not know the effect this would have?*

3. Nights do serve a purpose IMO. Plants exposed to night
cycles, as opposed to those under 24/0, sex faster. This
has several advantages for the grower: it also saves time.
In my mind it saves space and money as well. Am I wrong?

4. Plants that are vegged with some type of a night regi
men transition to flowering faster than those kept under
24/0. It saves at least a week, sometime 2 in some cases.

5. Clones kept under constant light, over time, were not
as healthy and did not root as fast as clones given a night
cycle. 24/0 on clones seems a total waste of resources.

*Excluding Nevil and Shanti of course!

DJShort is convinced the 24/0 is detrimental to the overall
health of the plant, and as I cannot attest to that state-
ment, I can say that I have not noticed a decline in the
health of plants given a night cycle. In fact, I would say
that plants given rest were "happier" and grew just as fast,
if not faster, than those under 24/0. I've also noticed that
plants kept under constant light did not "look happy" from
time to time, and in some cases were given dark periods to
help them recover. I personally believe plants like the dark!

Happier plants make for better bud.

That's what I've found.

I dont like the 24hr light period either,
with having 6hours of dark or semi dark cuttings do better for myself,
They get this if i were to go outdoors anyhow, some people i meet simply think by giving there plants 24hr of light in vege they will give off more growth etc, ive not noticed any difference, I like to save on the power bill and let things in the room cool down for that 6'hours,especially in the hot summer temps where i live, in the winter period i leave the lights on 24/7 for me mothers, dunno if thats a good thing or a bad thing to be honest, ive not seen or noticed any change to them thus far.

I have usually used 24 hours of light for veg. I have found when growing from seed that I get a higher ratio of females with 24 hours and females frequently start showing sex before I even change the light cycle.

In my experience they show sex faster, and they grow faster. I have always used 24 hour for veg, and have never had any problems.

Thank you for sharing Joshua.

You make some interesting statements. More females with
24 hours of light? Females showing first? IME males show
first, but lately I'm seeing what you're talking about and it
intrigues me. I'm used to the old notion that boys sex first
and ladies come last. How long do they take to transition
to flowering? Are you talking indicas, mostly indicas, etc??
Have you tried rooting clones using various dark cycles? 2
b perfectly honest I'd prefer to root using dark cycles, veg
using 24/0, then transition the last two weeks to 18/6 in
preparation for the 12/12 flip. I'd even like (and this is me
thinking out loud again) a timer that gradually reduces the
photoperiod all the way down to 10/14, but I haven't quite
worked out all the logistics. I also like DJ's light regimen for
his male---20/4---as it is almost precisely what I use to
sex my plants. It gives them a nap without sacrificing any
noticeable growth. It also saves ferts, reduces heat, and
gives the grower a chance to address any problems, pest
or otherwise. The advantage is the increased buffer zone.

At least, I believe that.

I have had excellent results using the following regimen to get stubborn plants to finish up quickly, but they need to be getting towards finishing before you try it. Reduce light to 11 hours for 3 days, then 10 hours for 3 days, 9 hours for 2 days, and then leave it on 8 hours of light until they finish. They will finish fast, probably less than a week of 8hours, you are gonna sacrafice significant yield and some potency, but they will finish nicely, and up to a month ahead of cycle. If you have to choose between harvesting early, or doing this... Do this, the buds will still come out dripping with resin, and look totally mature even if smaller.

I also use this technique sometimes to get seeds to brown up, on seed crops.
