Freezing Seeds

You all might find this interesting:

I remember reading this 10 years ago when it came out. All information is 10-40 years old and has been mentioned in earlier posts.

This says the same thing Svalbard says/does - dry your seeds before freezing(desiccation), this is a few hundred dollars(USD). CyroGram may store your seeds $500USD for 5 years(renewable, with a price rise).

For the rest of us, storing your seeds, airtight, at 0F/-18C, will work for 10-20 years. No desiccant needed. You may use a desiccant at this temperature but your seeds won't stay viable as long.

Also, no, my freezer does not ice up. In this case you may need desiccants but that's just a band-aid. You don't have desiccant problem , you have a freezer problem.

Greetingz and Blessing to all of ya,

It seems ro be a great discussion how to do the right way....i Just want to expand the Live-time of the Seeds I bought from various Seedbanks over the Last month and Years ...so i think there were at a right Level, when i bought them.... Might be different from the Seeds i produced myself....

After all i read hear i will make an experience for my self and Store them in my freezer . Put the Seeds in the little Container with some Cotton. The Container will be airtight.....then Put them in a ziplocker an the zipback in a Tupperware Container with some Rice corn in there ....and that Box in the freezer at -18°c.

If there will hold vigor for the next 5 to 10 Years....i am Happy and thank Jah....If Not...
I get me some new from Shanti or other cool Breeder...

Seems to me better, than to Store em in der fridge in the next Years....

The extremely short reason of using desiccants is it is like using a condom when the girl you're with is already on the pill. I really don't want an unplanned kid, id rather the double protection.

Been doing something like that for 7 years now. 100% germination rate.

Over the centuries, the same 3 things destroy plants/meats/seeds that are being used for long term storage - oxygen, heat, light(esp. UV)
This is all covered under Issac Newton's Second Law of Thermodynamics. Airtight packages, protected from light, and stored at -18C takes care of this.

Before freezers, people stored their perishables in a hole dug under their cellar called a 'root cellar' - it was dark, it was cooler, and there is less oxygen there. Ta Da!
The small amount of oxygen there was fine for the exchange of gasses in ripening vegetables/fruit.

Instead of ziploc bags which let a good amount oxygen back in very quickly - consider vacuumed sealed mason jars or vacuumed sealed bags? If not possible than a ziploc is better than nothing.

I bought small foil seed packs, like what commercial seeds come in. can get around 2gram of seed in each. Squeeze the air out and seal with vacuum sealer..

leave your seeds at room temp for about 6 months before you bag em up.

Before freezers, people stored their perishables in a hole dug under their cellar called a 'root cellar' - it was dark, it was cooler, and there is less oxygen there. Ta Da!

think i seen that done in Himalaya they were stashing butter underground

While the above is more appropriate for bead storage, I don't think it is suitable for long term fridge or freezer. Mason jars with rubber seals are more up to task and vacuum sealing them ensures seeds are stored at there predetermind moisture content. I use small labeled amber vials that will accommodate the individual seed straws the seeds come in from auction. I do put several grains of rice within the bottles. I then put these vials into a mason jar that I vacuum seal with my Vacuum Seal 2840 or I use a Pump-n-Seal. I've pulled seeds from 2014 that have a 95% germination rate.

Svalbard is a facility that stores for end of the world scenarios, I'm not sure we need to go that far. Though I do wish I would have stored my Skunk seeds from the 80's in a better fashion :(

I prefer to keep seed in the fridge at between 3-5C, if you keep them in that situation you will be able to keep them for some years...

If you freeze seed you will not be able to refreeze it so be prepared to use it after this one time storage method. Breaking larger batches up into smaller ones is a good option for this method also.

Heat and direct sunlight are just two methods that reduce the germination levels by basically cooking the embryo inside the seed capsule. You can tell nothing from the seed as it looks fine but inside has been killed. Irradiation is just one way the food industry treat things to preserve them longer...it is for me a very bad option but it does give shelf life a little longer. The agricultural industry has used it in Holland to erradicate exporting bugs and eggs via flower/plant export...in a limited way. If this irradiation occurs to seed it is killed, again without visible signs. The use of Kirilian photography is something we at MNS have dabbled with a little.It seems to be one of the safest ways to tell if the embryo inside the seed case is alive or dead. So maybe in the future we will impliment this to scan the seeds for viability.Till then you will need to use the fridge or freezer....all the best Sb

well since I just sent some seed recently to a chap from 2002 stock that had been kept in a fridge all its life...and had very good germination levels I believe the methods of long term storage are as follows....

1. We keep 2 stocks of seeds, i for the everyday use and 1 for long term use.
2. Long term use means vacuum sealing the seed in small quantities in an air tight , moisture resistant plastic bag and kept in the freezer.
3. Short term use is keeping seeds dry in air tight containers, always put back in fridge when not in use.
4. Point about long term stock you cannot defreeze seed only one time and then keep it is the fridge stock, till it is used.

We have seeds from 30 or 40 years ago still in fridges and even if germination is lower it still pops up a few ...so it all works for us.

Here's what I use to get a good vacuum with canning jars:

I keep my seeds in the freezer inside 5ml "cryo tubes" (just a fancy name for what is basically an air tight plastic tube) with silica
gel beads inside.
I put the seeds at the bottom, then a cotton filter on top and then silica gel beads up to the brim and leave them at room temperature.
The beads will change color after a couple days due to having absorbed some of the moisture inside the tube plus what is the cotton filter. Then I open the tube, dump the humid beads out (seeds remain at the bottom of the tube protected by the cigarette cotton filter) and replenish with more fresh silica gel beads, screw the cap again and leave for a few more days at room temp, and they never change color, indicating the moisture inside is now low. Then I put them in the freezer, where they can stay in this condition for many many years, even decades, although I have only tested 5 year old seeds and got 90+% germination rate.

these are the seed foil bags I use... 5x7cm... use a small funnel to get the seeds in the bag. they roll up well and push out excess air... seal with heat sealer on vacuum sealer, no vacuum required. Seen lot of commercial seeds in these usually dated to sow within 3 years of packaging and they all at room temp. All mine went in freezer after 6 month room temp air dry. Expect them to be viable in 30 years but will test viability over the years and report back.

Diamond painting cases can also function as a primary preservation layer reasonably well, especially when combined with simple moisture control (rice and cotton, as already suggested).
The main idea isn’t to replace proven longterm methods, but to highlight how useful these cases are for organisation and seed handling. Smaller sealed vials already, mentioned, can easily be stored inside them, so both approaches can work together rather than being mutually exclusive.
In the end it comes down to use case: maximum long-term preservation vs. practical organisation.
A layered approach covers both, and the tools included in these sets are genuinely useful.

It might be a little bit of topic but the question goes in the Same direction.

What is the best way to Store Male Pollem for further Projects?

We have a small pollintation going on, and the very potent Male is still producing a huge amount of Pollem.

What can I do to keep the pollem usable for a Period of lets say the next three months to selectivly Put some of his Powder to a small amount of female Flowers later on?

The Male in the Back is an Bubble Gum Bx2 from Fleur de Mal Seeds....very Early and is already bringing Male Flowers under 20h of Light, thats the reason we chosed em for the Project (the smell of the stem rub is amazing too)....to make the Bubble Gum F1 and the other Bubble Gum x Bubble Gum BX3 to flowering earlier Outdoor.
