Hi Greg, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions :)

I might misunderstand, but as you say 1-4 were very short indica-leaning phenos of whatever you bred into them, starting with your pure afghans, ranked in order of their flavour? Then the same with 5-11 as hybrids?

Am I correct in thinking that the 1-11 numeration continued when you sent Neville the clones, and his reference to them by the same numbers? And if that's true, and I've made a lot of presumptions here so it probably isn't, does this mean that the various NL lines originally had no direct relation to each other?

G`day AxR

I`m having trouble understanding what you mean by the bold highlighted phrase .

The 4 original Afghan seeds bred - selected Luther Burbank style [ keep the best discard the rest] . Then crossed to other strains ranging from Afg #1 to Thai and Indian at the other extreme .

Are you asking were different plants from the Afghan pool used rather than just 1 mother ?

I was looking at a Seed Bank catalogue recently that had NL #8 x Sk . That might be where Nevil got the notion the NL #5 was a Thai cross . The old story that I have heard over the years and then again here was about the Thai in NL .

I always wondered what gave NL the calyx to leaf ratio . Afghans pre NL that I saw were very leafy but covered in trichs . Not a good smoke as ganja . Needed to be made into hash IMO .

Well, Greg indicated the numbers were also a ranking system. 1-4 for pure indicas and 5-11 for hybrids ranked in order of their flavour, I presume high also factored somewhere into this ranking too?

Edit: After reading back I realised I had mistakenly thought Neville received NL cuttings first, then made seeds from them when of course he received seeds first, and later got a cutting of NL5.

Still, I wonder were the original seeds he received labelled 1-11 in Greg's method, and did Neville keep this numbering when he grew them out, this would be either coincidental or go to explaining the wide phenotypical differences, eg, #1 is a true breeding Afghan, #2 is Hindu Kush type etc...

I'm just speaking stoned conjecture though so take it with that in mind... :)

Aloha, We all know Nevil made Northern Lights #5 world famous as to the rest of the 1-11 original strain seed he received in the mail only he has the answer??

Aloha Greg,
Wow! Well I think unless/until Neville comes and says otherwise I'm going to go ahead and assume Neville did indeed label the strains as a group "Northern Lights" and most of us (and perhaps him too?) have assumed that they were close relatives or somesuch.
Many people think of northern lights as "a" strain, and tend to think of it as indica because the indica phenos of #1 afghan and #2 hindu kush have been the ones released and it would only make sense to think these too come from your seeds labelled 1 and 2 (unless Neville says otherwise).

G`day APRS

Nevil said on this forum he crossed NL #5 with NL #1 and called it NL#5 .

He also said Sensi NL was NL #5 x NL #2 .

There was a NL #8 x Sk #1 in an early catalogue .

I remember a post from Nevil about his descriptions of what he thought the different NL lines were. I can’t remember where it’s at and I didn’t do a search. I came across this one not too long ago while searching for something else.

The NL2 was IMO a NL version of Kush. More weight and that puffed up indica type of bud that NL5 had. The taste was very similar to the Kush4 that I remember as coming from Ortega. (correct me if I'm wrong Jim). The Ortega type was more what I would describe as a typical landrace although fairly consistent. I used an F4 NL2 male over the Kush4 to produce a vigorous hybrid that was true to type. It was the Kush4 that made me realise that the NL2 was primarily a Kush. The NL2 needed some fresh blood as the F5 wasn't as good as the F4. I had planned to take the Hybrid back to NL2 and as the NL2 had already been released I expected others would do the same. I must be living in my own world as it doesn't appear that anyone saw the connection that seemed obvious to me.

I never got any Kush from Sam. I did get another Afghan from him that was unrelated to A#1. It a was coarse large seeded variety with big calyxes, but lacking potency. I used that in the Black Domina (25%).

All the NL lines were from seed not cuttings, as was the Kush4.

Aloha Greg, on the reply screen look above where you're typing in the middle for a little paperclip icon. Click that and a box will open that allows you to upload, and then insert the uploaded image into your post.

Hope that helps :)

Hey Hempster,

I'm not sure why Greg doesn't post here anymore, he has a thread at the GHS site promoting his seed lines...
