The origins of Haze

Hi Bodhi,

Interesting, about the four different types of Haze. That corroborates what my old friends in Santa Cruz have been saying to a certain extant, which is that the so called "purple haze" which had also been going around and was common in Santa Cruz in the late 60's and early 70's, is different from "Haze Brothers Haze". If the haze brothers haze was distributed in 76 in 90 days, this also corroborates my theory that it was a very small elite operation, and that's why none of my old friends in Santa Cruz had heard of it.

When I introduced NL5hz in Santa Cruz as "Holland Haze" in the early 90s, nobody had ever seen anything like it, and in the words of an Old Cat, and a very serious smoker, when I asked him about the possibility of "Holland Haze" being related to the Santa Cruz "Purple Haze", he just laughed and said the two should not even be mentioned in the same sentence.

Nobody I have ever talked to about it in Santa Cruz, had ever heard of the Haze Brothers, but many had heard of the "Purple Haze". Let it suffice to say that I believe the 2 types of haze, "Haze brothers Haze" and "Purple Haze" while they are both from the area of Santa Cruz, are entirely unrelated.

Hi Josh :)
As Ive mentioned to you in the past, I am not in the least bit surprised to hear nobody has ever heard of the haze brothers in Santa Cruz, California. Those very close to me reside in Santa Cruz in fact and this is why I know most will say, "who" when you start asking about the Haze brothers.

Outside of High Times Magazine, where can we source anything having to do with the haze brothers?

Purple Haze is a song written by Hendrix, the entire world is familiar with it. There is no doubt in my mind this is the explanation as to why the term purple haze is so well known, not because there were boat loads of purple cannabis being sold that was called haze.

Ive smoked cannabis presented to me as Purple Haze before, it was likely Purple #1 or a similar strain, as there was no haze in it. But a less experienced smoker would fully believe they just smoked Purple Haze, no questions asked. The name sells more than anything else, just as G13, Widow and Northern Lights.

?

I dunno i could be wrong , but ,,
dont dope growers usually keep a low profile ??

i spose that saves them getting ripped off ,, dobbed in ,, etc etc ,,

do you reckin if those guys were growing heaps of good erb at their property they would want everyone knowing about it????

im betting theres no neon light sign saying "the haze bros lived here"

get the drift ??

Hi Jesse and Donald,

The "Purple Haze" I am referring to was going around in the Late 60s, and that is the only haze any of the old hippies and stoners I know from Santa Cruz( of which there are quite a few) had ever heard of.

My Point is, that there definitely was a "Purple Haze" strain going around in Santa Cruz, in the late 60's early 70's, and this strain was not only mediocre, but it also had nothing to do with "Haze Brothers Haze".

Now the fact that no one in Santa Cruz that I know had ever heard of "Haze" outside of "Purple Haze" does not mean that it did not exist, but it is a good indication, as I have stated many times, that it was a very small, elite scene, and not in any way "Famous".

If it became known in the mainstream, it was only because of a series of High Times articles that were written many years after the fact. I read some articles discussing the "haze brothers" sometime in the 90s that is how I heard of them, and I guessed them to be a scam that someone had made up to take credit from Nevil. This is because I was asking folks in Santa Cruz, in the know, about them and the so called "Haze". This is when I learned about the so called "Purple Haze" which was said to be nothing special.

It wasn't until I heard it from the Horses Mouth(Nevil himself), here on MNS a few months ago, that I started to believe that the "Haze Brothers" were more than just an urban legend.

Now Bodhi is saying that for the most part the "Original Haze" was really just one crop, sold primarily by a single person, in '76 over a period of 90 days, that there were four colors or types and none of them were purple. I am just saying that this makes sense, and it explains a lot.

its nice to see us arguing the same point again.

how many people where really growing domestic in the mid 70s?

High times holds a lot of your answers if you actually go back and read the issues from the mid 70s

Its not surprising but a good laugh that the purple haze of the 70's is now being questioned :D

Bohdi didnt say nothin of the fashion purple haze did not exist ,Magenta is what was known as purple haze ,an too those priveldged few the Rootbeer pheno .

Everyone has there opinion sure ,but you can all look for yourself as i have since ive been on the net there are a handful that claim they have experienced santa cruz haze an in no way did anyone say it was medicore

did anybody ever grew smoke positronics "purple haze " ??

I have a small one flowering , looks good in spite leafs are very roundish without haze look ...

Im not that bothered who , where and why on the haze ,

but if it were mediocre i cant see why sam would have kept the seed and taken them to holland ,
nevil said the seeds sam gave him were just as he had said ,
imho would have been nice to see what could have come of the female that was tossed out ..

thats the one thing i find the most amazing about the whole story.

Sacred Seeds is selling a s1 of what an f6 haze or something so they claim in 1980.

A few years later Nevil starts a revolution with a handful of plants.

Its a good lesson in proper breeding techniques for one.

What Joshhazey is saying is kind of important, I think. There is every possibility that some shitty purple indica was being sold as "purple haze" when the radio was playing purple haze every half hour, but that "haze" as we know it i.e the ancestor line to SSH, NH, NL5HZ was some crazy elite shit.

There were lots of hippies in Santa Cruz in 65-75, but not many of them were rich. At $200 an ounce, I'd bet that only a very select and connected few were buying the real haze.

which leads back to high times in new york and lots of people glad to pay that price.
Not saying that haze did not come from cali, but that line "its from cali" has been used since the same folk in question moved to santa cruz.

Read Sam the Skunkman's posting about the Haze Brothers with great interest and wanted to clear up a few things. First, I was there in Santa Cruz in the Seventies when it was all happening and never heard the original growers refer to themselves as the Haze Brothers. The infamous Haze Brothers did actually exist, but they were consumers, not growers.

How do I know? I was one of those three brothers and we bought, smoked and shared as much Haze as probably anyone on the planet. We were originally herb connoisseurs from back east who had grown up on the best Columbian, Jamaican, Panama Red, Thai Stick, etc. But even with our backgrounds, we had never seen, smelled or smoked anything like the Haze. The first time we saw those dark purple buds, we could hardly believe it (nor the price, which was $250 per ounce). From that point on, it became the Dom Perignon of our stashes.

So as far as the tasting test with R from High Times Magazine in New York, it did happen and we roasted, toasted and basted him with three varieties of Haze. He was kind of cocky when we got there and more like cold-cocked when we left. Even with all the high quality weed out there today, I don't think any of it is better or more exotic than the first Purple Haze, which was so dark and delicious, we called it the Root Beer.

Two last notes. First, there was a band, The Original Haze, that played in clubs around Santa Cruz in the Seventies that was part of the story. Second, for those rare few who were lucky enough to own one, there was a beautiful, limited edition grower's poster, that listed the soil ingredients, directions and Haze philosophy, In Haze We Trust. The last line of the poster read "Enjoy!" and we lived by that motto.

So that's the story behind the story.

The 250 i dont think was a staple price,Remember the haze was sold far and wide in the states and as coop mentions some Nyer's at that time wouldnt mind payin that .But id imagine that wasnt the market price for all .Below is somthing to think about aswell from SAMS who was there.

The $250 an ounce price was I bet from R.L. around 1976-1977 that was when prices were the highest due to low stock to sell

Id just like to mention the above quote from hooterool the last line i higlighted Bold IS SOMTHING WE ALL NEED TO REMEMBER ,as of lately .

Im happy to see our haze thread kickin

I don't think it was indica, but I'm not sure... Back in the late 60s indica was very rare. I only know what I've been told, but from what I can gather, it was around, it was decent stuff, but nothing like my NL5Hz cut. That's all I really know about it.

Perhaps Mediocre is too strong a word. I am sure it was good stuff for its time... Mediocre compared to NL5HZ is perhaps a better way to put it.

I was just told that it was nothing like 5Hz and could not even be compared to it. To put things into context: Nothing was like my NL5hz, nothing...Even in the 90s, when one hit kind bud was everywhere. People literally flipped out when they first came across it. Everybody did, including my friends in down in Santa Cruz. People could hardly even believe it was weed.

Haze+ Mystery = History

No doubt Nev brought the Haze to the world, and hybridized it just as Sam suggested (would probably taste like shit otherwise, and not grow in many places). But no doubt the Haze was floating around California for at least a decade before that, was probably just very difficult to finish before the cold weather, and the strategic importance of Santa Cruz may well be overstated.

I'd be looking further east and northeast in them there hills.

Like Nevil, I suspect a Thai Buddha stick the major contributing progenitor of Haze; the same or very similar line that gives oomph to the Mullumbimby Madness...Here's a post saved by Raco from OG, which describes how the MM Thai would often turn purple...
DSC00620.jpg

I suspect if anyone can find a purple Thai; not a Thai crossed to Indica, nor a chocolate Thai, but a bona-fide, blue blooded purple Thai, then the puzzle of the '75 purple Haze will be solved. Twice I have encountered such a beast, twice I have been freaked out of my skin. What's sells in the market these days doesn't come close in psychedelic impact.

I too prefer the lime green version - same trippiness, less anxiety and paranoia.

People still possess that stuff and 35 years later they still sell it for $200-250 and oz;)

Im not debating your friends opinion or word ,just finding it hard to swallow

Somthing to note is the haze bro's haze is a given name by the community from the story which has been presented .If you read the poster (which was around before most of us were smokin) not the sites description's .It list the four varietes which sams has spoke of some very briefly .

Soo your thought that the HBH n purple haze are 2 different strains depends of which way you look at it .Haze brothers haze comes from the story that Sam the skunman has told of the 2 brothers j n R and could possibly be SAMS result of saving/preserving the Ohaze line .Truth is the purple haze was distrubuted by the the actual brothers aka 3 guys from back east :D

If my above statement confuses you, Go to my Ohaze thread at IC read SAMS post # 838 page 56 ,which is in response to hooterolls post .

I find it amazing an quite hard to believe any 90's bud is quite compareable to the imports of the 60's an 70's .Im curious to your friends experience's an age also what year he lived in the cruz since ? Caz we have 3 fellas at IC who can tlk about their experiences in the cruz during the 70's and we have hooteroll's post BELOW which states the exact opposite of what your friends opinion have been

Hi all,
At some point truly authenticated information stops, and resting on word of mouth begins. But using legend to fill in the blanks has never been good enough for me, and will certainly not help answer any questions. Our best source of information on Haze prior to Nev is High Times Magazine and Sam the Skunk Man.

Who is willing to bet the house on eithers' word?

The legend of haze at it stands today can be traced directly back to Nevil and Shantibaba here at MNS. As I have previously explained. But making assumptions based on word of mouth, rather than fact, will only lead all of us back full circle to a mystery.

Whoever the haze brothers are/were, there are articles in High Times which ultimately describe the mystery origins of the variety. Who today can verify who these haze brothers really were? And of those who may utter some kind of verification, can we trust their words not to have some kind of personal motivation behind them?

There is a lot of mystery involved with this line, and I do not personally see the blanks being filled in anytime soon. But we can at least say for sure Mr. Schoenmakers and Shanti have had quite a bit to do with this lines fame as it stands today. This much makes me feel good to know, because at least we can establish a place to acquire said magic lines lol.

Jesse

This is your thread but you do remember the title

I dont wish to take nothin away from Nevil nor shantibaba ,I have always given the respect an in my deepest reach without pics the mention that there is a connection to My favorite ( NYC ) haze and the Mns haze hybrids ive experienced.

But why do you persistantly mention haze/ohaze or anything to do with the origins can trace back to Nevil or shanti ? Nevil recieved stock in 85, haze was around 15 years prior

They both have nothing to do with haze from santa cruz other than the stock that Sams sold Nev.If you look back at those nevil threads he openly and honestly says he never smoked haze from santa cruz and when I question specifics of the Sams story he says i have a good point and these are things he cant answer

Sams has'nt given us more nifo since the start of my thread aka beginning of several haze articles .Im not sure what more authenticity you might exspect ,the hooteroll story/post was not argued by SAMS more or less agreed upon in a interesting fashion .hooteroll's story coincides with Happyhi 's of IC aswell as the Ht R or RR haze articles .

Ive got a funny feeling some new info will be revealed sometime soon

Thanks to MNS we can have a taste of the past an the haze lives on

till than lets enjoy as the motto goes

Yeah.... I really don't know. It's all just conjecture and hearsay. I think there was probably all kinds of stuff going around called "Purple Haze" because of the Hendrix Song. Who Knows?

My statement about 90s one hit weed, is mine alone and has nothing to do with my friend. I did not move to California until early 90s and I brought my haze with me, so I really don't have first hand knowledge about those early imports in Cali. I was just noting that even with all the really kind outdoor buds going around Cali in the early 90s when I was there, still nothing was even close to NL5Hz.

What I am really trying to say, and I think I am right about this, is that there was all kinds of stuff going around called purple haze, that shouldn't be confused with Haze brother's Haze or the "Original Haze" that Bodhi is discussing, and that Original haze was obviously a very small scene, made famous first by Nevil and the Seedbank, and then later, as you just stated, by Sam S.

Once Nevil made it famous and well known, through the Seedbank, he of course was honest about his source. In this way he actually made Sam S. really much more famous than he was.

Nevil's Seedbank Haze varieties came from a batch of seeds that were labelled 1969, and these seeds came from Sam S, who traded them from the original haze brothers, in exchange for Sam's Skunk.

Most likely the so called Positronics Original Haze, is actually a watered down variety of haze from Sam S's Skunk Haze hybrids, and that is why they have so many indica looking and 12 week phenos.

It makes sense that Sam S would not have any pure O Haze because he sold Nevil 2000 pure seeds that he guessed would never sprout for an exorbitant amount, and out of those 2000 seeds, Nevil was only able to sprout 7 seeds, which still came as a surprise to Sam S. Even if Sam had saved some of the Haze Brothers seed, there is a very good chance he would not have been able to get them to sprout.

The proof is in the pudding: it stands to reason that if Neville's Haze, which is only 3/4 Haze, throws phenos which are fully 6 weeks longer than any phenos found in Positronics O Haze, that Positronics O haze is most likely less pure than Nevil's 3/4 haze
.
