The True Origins of Haze

and this is absolutely how a forum should run; if you have an opinion, post it up and let everyone read it. and then leave it alone. the problems start when those with differing opinions have nothing new to add so they simply repeat previous postings with the help of cut, copy and paste. this is the only site where i have ever witnessed such postings and imo, it is absolutely moronic. further if one is unable to discuss in a civil manner, please do not bother to post at all. wtf? a poster gets on the losing side of the debate and the answer is to trash the thread with bs? peace-biteme

I agree 100% speak your piece an move on

The thought of the quote being a negative thing was mentioned somtime ago an i agree to an extent ,It came to mind when i made an earlier response .What i do find helpful is that you can read the post you are trying to answer an reference it right in front of you which you cant do when just go to new post

But i now hit the quote feature an after i finsh my post erase the quote

Greetings Bigherb,

Great job with all your research and accurate description of the origin of haze. It seems that a lot of the players back in the day have amnesia when it comes to the story so I appreciate your efforts to tell the story to the best of your ability from extensive research and interviews.

Best Regards

I appreciate the kind words from you an all the MNS family

Its true memories which werent a piece of you will fade but the footprints you make should always be imbedded in you head .

It took a while to understand that there are very few members of our community that actually had the opportunity to smoke the Santa Cruz haze .Many are much older an the memory faeds with agae but some just have abetter recollection than others .Also some forget what they wish to forget ;) .

Im still open to hear folk share there experience as i can never get enough details .Below is some recent convo i had with Mt Nectar at IC who had experience both smoking a tending a small crop

it's been fun bigherb ....and appreciate ya hangin' with me and my jawin'.......I only speak truth from first hand accounts and feel fortunate to have this in offering

I can't share as much as the original crew as I just turned 50.......but can say for sure Haze wasn't ready till December in Boulder Creek or Corralitos area (two spots we tended in) and as stated some phenos never really wanted to finish...would run on (flowers) till spring and re-grow....are fav was the purp phenos and had varying degrees of coloring...some calayxes were violet to almost black purp with green foilage...others all purple from the start.....kinda' grape licorice anise flavoring with a dash of spicy pepper

at the start the Haze was not readily available to the masses, but I did have two different sources.......one was locally in Aptos....he had passed back in 80's and was the seed source for myself......the other in Boulder Creek region and they were tight with it......they considered it "God's Gold".......

I first was introduced to Haze in '74 and by '76 was tending my first crop of it along with the roadkill skunk sativa from same individual.....he specifically worked on selection of the purple variant within the line ....so the seed line was already being worked towards a true breeding purple while hopefully retaining the high/taste it was so prized for......

as for the bs "closelly guarded seed"..maybe from the "crew"...but we READILY made it available among friends-late 70's .....to think otherwise was jewish.....we were more concerned with enjoying life's experiences while high on the Haze then hoarding for personal gain....the Haze has/always will be a true connoisseur's delight .....like a rare vintage of grapes....it's in a class of it's own.......

to say more I'd take the 5th.............

on the question to incense ...maybe frankenscense...but to judge ones palate vs anothers is subjective to the individual.......the phenos were everywhere when it came to the Haze...as well as the tastes/flavors and highs..I personally thought alot of it was of lesser quality than the commercial imports of the time....can't remember who said it, but an estimated 5% of population was considered top quality..............this is why I became so interested in my sources ability to zero in on the preferred purple phenos.........otherwise I would have never continued the quest......

This is one of my favorite lines below from this Fella ,I found his story genuine an his mindstate an personality were appreciated

nothin' is so special that anyone should not have a chance to experience it..............

Chocolate Thai was definitely still coming in heavy in 1985, first hand, specifically through Long Beach harbor in Los Angeles, I went through lots of it before it dried up around '87. It was loosely pressed in comparison to the central/south American tradition, but pressed, not sticks. A pound would often resembled a semi flat, rounded cow patty. Light brown, spicy, wonderful chocolatey aroma. Huge achenes, damn near the size of citrus seed, no mottling, tortoise shell with red tinges towards the basal end. Grown domestically it had a typical citrus like aroma, you had to store it for months before these more dominant terpenes oxidized and gave way to the more complex aromas that gave it its famous handle. Really up herb, though folk associated it with being burnt out for the rest of the day, it really took it out of you on the way down, but for the first couple of hours you were pacing back n forth looking around for something you already had in your hand etc. Mega out of control munchies, you were way full, about to throw up, but just one more bite, lol. A true classic.

I do agree that most of the Central American imports were crap by then (85), but excellent Thai was still to be had, Jamaican and Hawaiian too, rip your head off shit. -T

nice post on the choco thai and it sounds like it came from another old fart like me? and to enhance the saga a bit i have to ask; was the thai stronger back when then what we see today? lol. you don't have to answer that. there isn't an answer for some things. but for some of the younger folks who missed out on the real thai sticks, one thought must persist. how good was that weed where folks would actually take the time to tie tiny buds onto bamboo sticks? at one time it was that good. it is a natural addition to this complex hybrid we know to be haze. peace-biteme

this NH is finally going to start its 2 week flush.
i really like how the purple starts at the tips of the calyxes and works its way down, sometimes turning completely purple.

Simply incredible ty Jack . The calyx size ! , the resin production !! , the purple colouration !!! If that stuff smokes as good as it looks you are a lucky and very well deserving grower amigo. Very much appreciated and I know you probably whacked it up earlier on your thread but can I ask how long that baby has been under 12- 12 for , mate ? Once again gracias Jack , bloody amazing , kudos to you :)

like tomhill, my father got alot of choco thai in los angeles in the 80s. from what i was told there was alot of thai stick going around at that time that had been laced with opium. so maybe thats why the thai stick was so good? hahaha. great info and great discussion going on. this is how it should be folks.

does anyone else remember reading an article, probably high times, about how the monks made thai sticks?
take a big cheese wheel of hash,
put in a big pot on a filter stand, in the ground with alcohol
invert lid with ice on top and the alcohol will evap and condense, dripping on the hash and eventually dissolving all the goods.
then they wrapped buds on a stick and dipped them in the reduced hash oil.

im sure plenty of people did this,
i just wonder how many people knew what it was they were actually smoking, or did they think it was unadultered cannabis?

The NH#4 up there is around 76 days of 12/12 at the moment.
i dont think it smokes as good as it looks. but ive only smoked some small clone plants that i tested at 90,99, and 105 days. the 105 was the best.
its more nl5 heavy in my opinion.
im looking for flavor.
but it does have a slight ?lavender? smell.
potency is good so i think it will be fun to breed back to other 50% haze C plants.
ive never smelled frankencense, what does that smell like?

good point jack. im gonna follow up on that definitely with the whole hash on thai tick thing. sounds much more plausible than alot of opium drenched thai stick around. cheers brother!

JL

The stories of "opium dipped" thai sticks have always seemed far fetched to me, but considering that opium production was the primary source of income in the area (Golden Triangle anyone?) the explanation of the sticks sometimes being treated with a wash produced as a by-product of opium production seems plausible.
That part of the Thai story is not very interesting to me though.

Tom, I picked up a QP of that chocolate Thai in Mendocino when I spent a summer up there in '83. They didn't call it "chocolate" when I got it, but you have described it perfectly.
The Thai that I grew myself in '81 was much better (I suspect age/condition of the buds was the biggest factor for the chocolate Thai.)

The topic of Thai an its relation to haze is one that has interested me .Its partially because the information is abit hard to come by (which is why post like Tom are appreciated ) about the thai of the Old ,I will have to look for them but if i recall R from HT did soo R reports on old thai 's .

The highland an Lowland are noted as having different taste an effects
both both amazing in their own right .I have seen a few post with lowland being noted as spicy an incense like aswell as the golden an Buddah thai described the same way this tarit is used by a few posters to describe some old thai .

But as to the connection with thai an haze is that it was surely a later addition from Sams in attempt to preserve /save the Santa Cruz Ohaze .Some supporting evidence below

post by Sams

All of the S Indian and Thai crosses were toward the end of Haze production. Not only males were used for crosses. The 3 year timeline was just someones dream , Haze was grown for over 10years by the haze bros , Sacred seeds tried to stabilize Haze with mixed results. The quality dropped considerably. The problem is that the best Hazes were F1s Hybrids , and Haze stabilization can not be done without a loss of vigor.

jack hairy

Its upsetting to know such a beauty didnt live up to her potential .But maybe a clone or cure will give different results .lavender is a trait which i dont recal Common with NH .

As for frankincense ,First things that comes to my mind is Church in the catholic church during mass an funerals Frankincense in burned

Also check my thread i have posted here post #47 provides some links which might help explain

Brothers & Sisters,

If I do recall correctly, Sam’s answer was directed to me. In order to understand the exact facts regarding the makeup of Pure Haze, It was necessary to stir the waters, forcing the ones involved to jump in order to correct me. Guess what… It worked!!! I still wonder (he,he,he) what Sam did with all special individuals pumping up in each generation, but at least we know basically how things were done. Obviously, that I cannot forget BOEL, and what was their herb of choice, named LSD on a stick… but that is another story.

May peace be with all of you.

all that i have sampled is uncured, so i am looking forward to a some fully cured nugs down the road.
i do know that some of the most amazing plants i have seen still had strong flavor and smell when wet, uncured, so when i find one like that again i will be happy.

dont get me wrong, that NH#4 is good, i think its just that it has more of an nl5 smell and flavor than haze. i will keep it for a bit and make some seeds, but it is no where near as good as my nh#1

im surprised a little to see color coming in on this one. the temp ranges from 70-85, so it is not cold induced.

i have a clone that hits 120 days today, gonna cut it in the morning and ill show you the pics. it is pretty much solid purple. but it gets down to 56 in that room.

Damn jack hairy your favorite nevils has a killer calyx leaf ratio. Three plucks of the hand and you'd have a cola trimmed, looking absolutely beautiful there jack.

jack

Sup brother looks amazin glad you got ya hands on some nevs stock

I look forward to a smoke report after cure . Im curious as to the taste an aromas yoy get from nh #1

Best wishes

i wish i was a little better at descriptions, but...

while growing it seemed very citrus/sour/piney with a little fumeyness.
now that it is dried, i get less of the fumey citrus and more deeper tones that i could guess is the liver/leather tones.
in some ways, it reminds me of catnip plants buds. there is a similar smell in there.

i forgot to show you guys these pics, i did put them somewhere else but i foget where...

this is the same NH#1 at 120 days and temps dipping to 56

instead of just letting this one dry till its smokeable, its in a bin curing properly, so ill report back once i dip into it.

If ever some pics have made me want to crack seeds, it's these jack. God damn, that is some chunky nevs you have there. If i hadn't just started some other seeds, i'd be cracking some nh's for sure.

Inspirational, thanks for sharing
