Old road vs new road during The Great White Wait
Here is a picture of my old road taken from my front porch. I have since moved about 2 miles away. As you can see, it is a one lane dirt road. If I was leaving and you was coming to visit me without calling, well, we would meet headlight to headlight. Someone will have to back up or we will have a '
Mexican standoff'. No one wanted to back up because the road was more than a quarter mile long with 2 turns and a hill. If you went off the road even a little bit, you would never get back on it without being winched out by a big tow truck. It was also a 'private' road, so the town did not plow it, it was up to me. I did not have a plow. It was very hard to plow because as a single lane and you cant go off the road at all, there is no place to put the snow as it piles up over your plow.
I called every plower in the phone book and either they would not do it or they wanted a ridiculous price. They all knew the road. Eventually, I found a
fool plower to do it.
The deer sure liked the road as it made their life easier. In the background is a buck keeping an eye on his harem. Whenever you see a group of female deer you can be sure a buck is lurking somewhere nearby. The last few deer seem uncertain. I have one thing the buck does not have. Food! Hard to come by in The Great White Wait! You can see the road is tough to plow or even drive on . All I had was a 4 cylinder Honda Accord with all-season radials. Never missed a day of work in 20 years.
This is the old road looking from the main county road. Hard to tell, it goes uphill so you have to give it a lot of gas to get up the hill. But. At the top is a hairpin turn, most people gave it so much gas that they kept going straight, right off the road! In 20 years I never went off the road. I could see that there would be a lot of backing up to do if other cars came so I started driving out to my mailbox on the main road, a quarter mile away with 2 turns and a hill, backward. I would get mail, pop a u turn on the main road and drive to my house backwards. Pretty soon I could drive backwards just as good as forwards. It is an old trick I learned from
John Dillenger.
It you look just to the right of dead center you will see an overturned plow truck. Did I mention that it was a very difficult and dangerous road to plow. Driving on it was no picnic either. I loved it but no one else did!
Here. A little better picture of the plow truck off the road. Did I mention it was a dangerous road? I just happened to be walking to the mailbox when this occurred. I went over to the truck and the driver was knocked out and I could smell gasoline. I climbed up to the passenger door and got in, woke him up, and helped him out of there. Luckily, the truck never caught on fire. But. I still need the road plowed. Finally, I got someone to come plow it but when he saw the truck overturned he did not want to do it. Dang it! I did get him to do it but he never came back.
New Road
The new road is sweet. Two lanes, plowed by the village,it is so sweet I feel like I am living in a big city now, rather than the wilderness like I was before. Just go down the road, take a right.
Then take a left.
Proceed down down the straightaway and take a right.
In a little bit you will see one of my property signs.
And then it is Home Sweet Home!
Of course, I like summertime so much better. There is some nice flat, and sun-filled yard there to plant my medicine, and I do own property on both sides of the road, but,
BUT, I do not own the road that goes right thru the middle of my property! So if I plant in the ground, someone will just drive by at night, cut down the plants, throw them in the car, and that's it. This is why I
have to grow in containers at the side of the garage, hidden from police, criminals, and whoever else drives on the road. The road is part of an easement deal made with the town and a previous owner of the land over 100 years ago. Just weird to have a road thru the middle of your yard.
