My issues

Thanks for sharing that Useless. I've also got numbness on the outside of my left foot. The nerve is compressed and according to the Doctor there is no way of knowing if relieving the pressure will make it better or worse.

Hi all

Useless,

It is very spooky to me to see those pictures you have. That is just exactly like what I have seen when I go to the Dr's. I too have the DDD issues, and bad. Not just thru my lower back, but the rest of my pinal cord. Dr said something about only two disc being unaffected. I have had two fusion surgeries in six months. He mentioned that the first one caused the second. I have many issues such like Nevil mentions, and yourself. Sciatic troubles, numbness, and bad arthritic issues in the L-spine couple with (can't think of the tech term) narrowing of the spinal canal. I have alot going wrong fast. I try rehab type activities. The very next day, and couple days. I am pretty well laid up doing nothing. I also have two other herniations in my L-spine. DR mentioned the first herniation was worst he'd seen, and in the short time from first surgery. Second one made itself worse. I do honestly hope you can get back to some of your former life. I used to ride/drag race high powered cycles. Imagine clreaing an 1/8th of a mile in less than 1.5sec? It is a thrill. Something I very well may never do again. Dammit I will jump out of a plane oneday...willingly...lol

NEVIL,

Nevil I have much the same issue with medications. Will they work today, or not? I won't buy the shit weed here, and until my garden comes thru. I am out, and relying on pharma for relief. My wife is getting sick I think of my opiate humor at 2am when she needs to sleep for work. Hahaha. As for the operations. I really didn't feel I had much choice. I was also like useless on the verge of not walking. I kept telling them after the first surgery. I had fell out on the floor. Mri proved that more was wrong. The worst being the level above the most recent surgery is in bad shape. If you odn't need the surgery for issues like this. I would not do it. That is my opinion. As for the injection you mention. I believe it is called an epidural. Same thing really they give a woman during childbirth. The first had the same effect. The pain was horrid. Ten days later they did another. It made it worse. So afterwards they did a test. Called a discogram/discography...Damn refuse that test. Never take it. They can tell by MRI what is wrong, and that is a painful procedure. Used to illicit pain response by basically sticking needles into your back with no pain meds. The needles inject a saline solution into the discs. Hurts terrible...
So really my thoughts are this. Unless you are really in so much pain that nothing else gives relief. You are having a dysfuntional issue like mine with my legs cutting out. I would NOT do the surgery. Now please don't be offended friend I have the utmost respect for you, and your contributions. I know your older than me. I am late 30's, and your in your 50's. So you could also ask. What are the benefits? It is harder at an older age to recover, and it is a major surgery. In the case of Useless. I really hope he get's back to what he loves. I miss watching the guys race on tv. Nevil if you do go for surgery. You will need help at home for a couple weeks. Up to a month.

So in ending without knowing your exact situation, and everyday issues. I would say NO. Unless it is an absolute neccessity. I would be more worried about your neck friend. Last week I had my issue there crop up again. Instant headache, and almsot another hospital visit. I feel for you friend. I hope whatever decision you make. It will benefit you...Ns

P.S. Nevil while I am thinking of this. I asked the DR. What are the chances of another surgery. He said in most cases like mine there is a 50/50 chance. So I asked his opinion with my disc DDD issues. He said a domino effect, and more surgery is highly likely. Well more than 50/50 chance. So now with the surgery I've created a beast. A re-curring nightmare if you will my friend. This is a big reason I rec to you to wait until it is the absolute necessary to do so.

Nevil, and Useless...I wish you the best. If you ever want to talk, or ask questions. Hit me up here, and/or pm if you wish. I've got a couple good websites for spinal info

Yea Nev, that numbness in your foot leg comes from the sciatic nerve being compressed at L4/L5. Each area of numbness can be correlated to a specific nerve area in the spine. Unfortunately mine went so long, and was so bad, the nerve damage is permanent.

As a side note, a friend of mine had the same thing happen to him, but to a lesser extent. He got the spinal injections and said the same as you, it made it worse for about a week. He continued with the injections and did say the pain caused the injections dissipated each time. He was on "light duty" at work ( no lifting over 10lbs) for about 3 months, and now he is fine, less some occasional mild pain.

I had no choice but to have surgery. I only wish they did the vertebral fusion the first time. Would have saved me over a year of pain and depression from not being able to perform anything but essential remedial tasks.

My friend was not as severe, and took the non surgical option.

If it were me...I would try sticking to the injections and light work loads for a while, see how you feel in a few months. Surgery should be an "all else has failed" option, IMO.

Thanks for the kind words noshow.

I gotta say, the second surgery scared me a bit. They had to remove and replace 3 disks with artificial spacers. Can't remove them from the back, the spinal chord is in the way. So, they gutted me like a fish, removed my intestines and set them on the table next to me. Removed bad disks and installed spacers. Replaced my intestines and stitched me up. Then flipped me, cut me from ass crack to mid back and bolted in the titanium rods you see in the x-ray pics.
I have to admit, I really did pause for a minute when they told the procedure. LOL My first vision was of war movies and guys getting their guts blown out. They never survive! ROFL
Gotta say though, my surgeon is top notch, one of the best in the country so I am told. He did me some justice. Happy to feel human again. HEH HEH HEH.

yikes...

Useless,

I know what surgery your speaking of. I just can't rem the exact technical term. I was told mine was not a major surgery. I'd call BS. I was scared when I researched into the surgeries. I was scared they would want to do what you had done. Whatever it is. These are major surgeries. I am glad your issues are working out, and I do hope you get better. With the spacers replacing the discs taken out. They didn't use manufactured pieces with me. They took out bone from my hip to do that each time. That hurts terrible.

For the area I'm in. I have a Dr highly rec'dd. I years ago was meeting many poeple that had procedures done by him. None were un-happy. Myself I feel that the surgeries did what they were suppoused to, but that is where it stops. Like you...from years of the issues like the sciatic nerve being compressed. I stillhave pain, numbness etc. SO what did the surgery really help? We will see as the main thing I'm worried about. The legs cutting out. That has been happening again. Well that's it for now...Ns

BTW nice to meet you. There are quite a few here that have these issues. Hope you stay, and learn with us all. Goodday...Ns

My back blows today too! 8( Alright got my complaining out of the way. Couldn't find the ole bugger thread so I figuered I would do my bitching here.

NoShow- I'am very happy you have seen the benefit this injury has had on your relationship with your son. I find that I have alot more time for my family also since being hurt. Everytime life takes something from you it seems to give you opportunities elsewhere IMO, you just have to be able to see them through the gloom you might have.

Nevil- Those injections SUCK! I had 2 of them. I will never forget that burning sensation as the Dr. pressed that steroid creme into my spinal cord. That stuff took at least a week to dissolve too. Man, it felt like someone had their knuckles IN/ON my spinal cord for a week as it dissolved. My sciatica seemed to be worsened by the second injection so that was enough for me.

After doing the 2 injections, I was assured I made the right decision regarding NOT having surgery.

Funny, my experiences with modern medicine made me move to California to find relief from a plant. Guess thats to be expected though when the people approving medicines for the FDA own stock in the companies that make the meds they are approving. Conflict of interest? 8/

bitching...lol

Kyle,

I know what you mean, and many here have the similar issues with the back, and spine. No worries friend bitch away to your heart's content.

There are many days. I am just down. It may be my injury, and it may be my meds I am on. Whatever it is. I sometimes look right past the good that has happened. GOOD? Good from two fusions within six months of one another? Well many may not think so, but I do try to stay positive somewhat with the issues I am facing. I have spent more quality time with my son, and I have met many great people here at Mns. I also think sometimes I am lucky. I may have issues walking, and it is very painful all over. yet there are poeple who can't walk. While that is sad, and I wish I could help them. I can't beyond kind words. I consider myself lucky to just be in pain. I am unsure of how this happened, why, or how the OG injury came about. Let's just say this. How many people do you know walk away from a triple digit speed crash on a motorbike, and live to talk about it? So I am lucky in that sense. I also think that I have regained a new passion for poker. WHich I greatly enjoy...So we will see where this all leads. have a great one, and I hope your feeling better brother...Ns

btw: I had the epidural steroid injections also. The first one hurt terrible...Didn't help, but went away after about five days the pain did. Well went away a little bit. Ten days after the first one they did another. It fekked me up so bad. I called them a week after still hurting like they said to call them, and let them know. I went in to see Dr, and the rec'dd me to the neurosurgeon. I saw him, and a week later had a test called discogram/discography. man that OSB hurt...refuse that test. Tell them the MRI can tell them what they need. Imagine three needled in my back at the same time. Then injecting something into them to see which ones elicit a pain repsonse. Anyways a couple days later see Neuro DR again, and tell me the bad news. So three weeks after first visit to Nuero DR I had first fusion. Fibe months, and a day after first one. I had the second. First one fekked it up so bad. It collapsed the second one.

Well I go to DR tomorrow, and I have questions to ask him. So I hope your all well, and be safe...Ns

You are one lucky guy to be alive my friend. I never had enough sense for a motorcycle, I jump cars, so a bike would be the death of me.

Ever check out the "GhostRider" videos? That guy is my hero. I once drove 1884 miles in 20 hours. 90+ mph average including stops for gas, and VERY fast food, not bad huh?

I'm lucky to be alive as well (not only because of how I drive). My injury came when a bus hit me while riding my bike home from work. Imagine that, I get injured not when I'm behind the wheel driving cross country at 130+ mph, but pedaling at 15mph for a few miles between work and home. Life is funny, always expect the unexpected.

Those steroid injections seem so primitive to me. Weird too how your second shot effected you like mine did me.

Hope the Dr has some good news for you tomorrow.

I Got Your Back NoShow and Nevil (:)),

Funny

Kyle,

Not funny you get hit on bike at slow speed, but how the story matches up to mine.

I could run her just under 200mph true speed. Was short of that goal limited by my gearing. Now my story matches this way...

I repair bike from that crash. My buddy buys bike from me as I can't really ride it. Job at the time was literally seven days a week all day. Well on an off day buddy comes over to my house, but two hours late, and in car instead of bike. He wiped out leaving his driveway. 5mph crash spun out on spot of oil. Did more damage to that sucker than I did in the Hi speed crash...Ns

Back issues

Kyle,

I love them vid's. That guy is nuts...now the funny part is I used to ride just like that. Man I wished I'd thought of videos...lol. Yet I didn't wheelie all too often in populated areas. I didn't taunt the police. Yet say hypothetically I never ran from them a couple dozen times...lol. I can say this. It got so bad for me. I would leave my house on the bike. I'd have a Leo follow me. He'd turn off. A ways down the road. There's another...eventually he'd turn. Id get out of the city. Damn there's a county sheriff. All over me like stink on shit. I eventually had to leave the two counties around me to be able to ride. To open that beast up. Thrill junkie...adrenaline junkie if you will. I fully admit. Now the best part was running that beast hi as a kite. I know some would say bad news, but so damn exciting. I got to sleep now...peace brother, and hope your troubles find relief...Ns

hey no show, ive posted some info on another thread on how to treat pain with canna caps

Glad you like the Ghost Rider noshow. That guy has the largest nards recorded on video. Heh. Did you see the one with the turbo hiyabusa? 499 hp on a bike that probably weighed a few hundred lbs. BIG NARDS.

kyle

Kyle,

Ghost rider is crazy. I did shit similar, but he just steps it up ot lunacy level. I had a '00 R1 with a kit. Withthe kit I still came in at 11lbs less than the stock bike in weight. That is what the internet will do. As well as the following help I received from my old webboard online. I was 1.5lbs below the low setting on the kit, and making the power the kit made on the absolute high setting. 220rwhp, and 254motor. Now back then that was extreme. Nowadays that is a small number. Had it dyno'ed at a place where the owner of the shop actually gave the Roush team classes in engines etc. Now think of a car guy his eyes lighting up when he saw the numbers on the bike....<<<Priceless. have a good one...Ns

Dr visit

Hi All,

I had a DR's visit today. In short he thinks I will be ok to go back to work. Yet he also says with the DDD issues. That my back is likely to, or easily ready to re-offend. Causing another issue within. I am not released to go back to work, and I will take my time when going back this time, but I just don't really see that bright of a future such as he does. I hoep so, but I just don't. I am sick of daytime tv, but I honestly really have enjoyed being home with my son, and if financially we could afford to. I would.

So what I am worried about it the work part. I don't have a hard job, but there are parts of it that I know push my back to it's limits. Yet if my back holds up. My job will help to get back in shape. So I guess we will see.

On a lighter note. I have a friend from work I have kept up with. We talk, and text each other on a weekly basis. He is a decent guy, and the only one at my job I keep up with. It was nice being in town today. We got a chance after I went to the DR's to get togehter for some food. Visited for about 1 1/2 hrs. Good to see him again. Well that is all for now...Ns

L4-L5 Sacral Illiac Joint

Morning noshow
I Don't Know Wether I Mentioned I Fell Off A Scaffold In 89 And Mashed My Back.
The Feeling Of Pain Was Exruciating And After I Had Managed To Get Up It Felt As If My Torso Was Going To Fall Off My Legs And I'd Snap In Two
Today I Am Feeling That Pain Once Again ( Reduced Opiates / Quality Bud )
My Sciatica Is So Severe I Often Stub My Big Toe Stepping Up On To Curbs
Saying That , I Could Also Drive A Six Inch Nail Through My Big Toe Without Flinching.
I Am Considering Having My Sciatic Nerve Severed ( No Phantom Limb Pain Issues , I Hope )
Has Anyone Heard Of Papaya Disc Inserts ( New Zealand Medical Science ) ?
" No Pain , No Rain "
Joe:)

Hi Joe

Joe,

I remember the story. My issues are bad, but I know they didn't come on as quick as yours did. Mine more developed over time. I might be a goofy fellow, but I still remember incidents from when I was a teen that make me think my back was going bad then. I am not sure of exact how it happened. Yet I highly suspect two incidents. A cycle crash, and a workplace one. With you feeling like your stubbing your toe. I have control over my foot, but it feels almost dead. Making me wonder how I move it. Stepping off of a curb with my right foot first can be a harrowing experience. Sorry my friend I have never heard of those inserts. I do hope your feeling good today....Ns

;)..here in Thailand we only have the Coconut and Mango Disc Inserts farmed locally and very cheap.;)Sorry but i could not help myself...no offence my friend;)

hmmm

BLB,

I'd rather have the mango than hip bone they have used...lol...Ns
