Hi Neville,
Unfortunately I can feel your pain. I have had two back surgeries in the last 2 years.
I have numerous degenerated disks in my lower back from years of sports activities. (I used to race boardercross (snowboards) for 10 years, got to travel the world). The constant compression and decompression of my spine caused the disks to wither.
In Aug. 2008 I had a disk herniate (bulge) at L4/L5. The bulge was pushing into my spinal chord, causing sciatic nerve pain, and ultimately permanent damage. My lower left leg is constantly numb, as if your leg/foot "fell asleep". In Jan. of 2009, I had my first surgery, a simple lapendectomy (??) to remove the bulge on the disk (it was 15 mm). After 2 months of recovery, I was starting to feel better. However, after 4 months, I felt worse, and it was progressing daily. I continued physical therapy, but that only compounded the problem.
The problem was between the degenerative disks and what they removed, I no longer had any cushion between the vertebrae. My spinal column was literally crushing itself, and you could see stress fractures in the MRI's they had done.
Not wanting to have a 2nd surgery or my spine fused, I continued with physical therapy as long as possible, hoping strengthened muscles would compensate for the lack of disk.
By March of this year, I gave up. I was barely able to walk, and when I did I looked like an 80 year old man or a knuckle dragging neanderthal. LOL
I had the fusion in April. 3 levels. L4-S1. I was walking (upright I might add!) within 12 hours of surgery, with assistance.
I am currently about 70-75% back to "normal". But, I will be able to go snowboarding, surfing etc. this year. While I don't anticipate 100% recovery, (left leg numb, loss of agility and flexibility etc.) I do expect to be able to live my life comfortably and without pain.
(Que intro dialog to the Bionic Man) "We can rebuild him, make him stronger, faster..."
