Im up for a test mr hempy ,
ill happily grow a pure equatorial sativa outdoors where i live , vs your indoor ,
unless your afraid of embarrassing yourself why not join in ...

i see you going around hassling others , argueing , telling them they have no idea ,, they are fools etc etc
i would think you are one of the thorns in the side of a small site like this ,
you should learn your place and control your ego ,
learn some humility hempy and we would all be a lot better off ...

I'd be prepared to send you both some identical seeds for this trial grow-off, not to fuel any nastiness but for genuine interest in furthering our knowledge of how best to grow these sativa beasts.

hey bh , nice to see you doing some research on uv and light spectrums ,, wasnt it you that built the led board??
I agree with the blue light needed for sats ,, i always added one to my rooms ,in the form of metal halide , and if i had sativas , it would be over them ,.,
'
im sure we will eventually work out what it is that makes the tropics different ,

we know it already ,

just getting that reproduced is not that easy thus far .

Yeah, I built a load of different led lights and did a load of tests, main thing I learnt is at their current state LEDs are a good way of throwing a lot of money away. You can grow amazing quality bud with them, it comes out stinkier and tastier and fristier than hps or fluoros or halide, but the buds are always really small. You can up the yield a bit by adding some fluoros, but unless you're a micro grower, they ain't cutting it. Thing that stopped me using them and going back to fluoros and hps is leds keep going wrong so I had to keep replacing them and in an array of over a hundred it's gonna keep going wrong. The drivers don't last that long either, generally they fail after 6 months so it's a frustrating and money intensive pursuit, making diy led lights. The commercial units are improving but until they are a lot cheaper and they fix the yield problems by inventing much more powerful leds then I'll leave em to the rich to play with.

One thing that hempy does get right in his indoor grow is he uses a seup where the plants are getting enough light but it is diffuse rather than intense. I've found intense light from halide or hps can cause sats to grow new vegetative shoots out of their buds, my Oaxacan did it I remember.

There is a number of things you can do to help pure sats finish indoors, not giving much N after the first month of flowering is important then cutting it out altogether at a certain point is also important. You can reduce the light hours down to 11 or 10 too but no matter what you do, unless you have a lot of money to spend on fancy lighting then outdoors is the place for tropical sativas.

Ducksfoot is a great example, I could not get it to finish indoors at all, grew like a champ but when flowered went on and on and one and produced very airy buds, taste was not good and while it got you nicely high was nothing special at all, I ended up giving it all to friends.

Now Wal, there's not many men who could match you and your environment for top line marijuana, but to be fair, Hempy does produce some seriously strong ganja. Now I know he's a grumpy and abrasive fella, but see I think that's part of his charm.

Now back to the competition, as Nev says you guys have to grow the same plant, so if you don't do clones, why don't we get that Cheese grower from the UK who produces identical Cheese phenos from every seed, to send you guys some seeds:D

Nah, but come on let's have a civil competition chaps:) Nev and Kanga too...anyone else?

I'll be the judge:D

hey bushy ,

the rudeness and abrasiveness has been noted , amongst some other annoying traits ,, bullying , egotism , ignorance etc it shouldnt have to be tolerated really ,

we are grown men that can talk with civil tongues , no egos , not head swells , no rudeness ...
usually i dont have folks talking to me like that , nor would i ever talk to anyone in that manner ,,
if they do however ,, i will definately respond ....

with the grow challange ,, i welcome it ,
theres no chance an indoor grown equatorial sativa can compete with the same grown in the tropics .
im stunned and amazed that anyone could think they could ...

...
Imho HPS lights on their own are not of much use for finishing a tropical plant, you need to supplement with blue spectrum lighting. 10k Actinic type fluoro tubes that have a peak output around 420nm definitely help with tropical plants, they are less stretchy, fill in more and produce more terpenoids. 6400k cool whites are also worth using as they put out plenty of blue but the 10ks are better.

On the UV thing, UVA is bad for plants imho, it causes premature aging of the resin heads, they go brown under high UVA exposure long before they are mature and it is a brown colour, not the amber you see when it matures. UVA also causes plants to produce more of the carotenoid type terpenoids and these have red and yellow colours so the flowers under high UVA exposure will turn a deep purple as they now contain not only chlorophylls which are green but also carotenoids which are red and this gives an overall purple appearance.

UVB on the other hand has been shown to stimulate THC production, Mechoulam demonstrated that UVB could turn CBD acids into THC acids in a lab environment and there are other studies on the effects of UVB on live plants that shows some benefit. I forget the names of the authors now.

Apart from a couple of expensive Phillips medical tubes, all UV fluoros put out many times more UVA than UVB. The reptile types are no good, not enough UVB and lots of UVA, same with tanning tubes.

I still need to do more experiments but so far I can definitely say blue light in the 400-450nm range is way more beneficial to plants than UVA in the 350-400nm range and UVA has negative effects. When I have the money to buy a medical tube I'll experiement with UVB, so far I've only tried UVB in conjunction with lots of UVA.

Some pics of some of my experimental lighting setups and an Oaxacan that turned purple and had brown damaged trichomes from too much UVA.
Thanks for this info. Maybe you've hit on the reason UV doesn't help some people indoors. The UVB comes with UVA. Very interesting. I'm going to save it for later. I'm growing some Ducksfoot indoors, very badly I might add. They were under a HPS. They turned yellow and one died. I tried all kinds of different feeding. More water, less water. Finally I moved them under some compact fluorescents and they immediately got better. I've grown Ducks before under a CMH and they did much better than this time under the HPS. At the end of the last Duck grow I changed the light to a HPS and they started looking ill. I didn't attribute it to the light at the time but after the second grow I'm beginning to believe that some plants hate HPS alone. Have you used HPS with the 10k Actinic type fluoro as a supplement?
Here's a thread of my first grow of Ducksfoot.
http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=146402
Here's a thread with the yellow ones. They looked much much worse. I took the picture after they had cleared up some. The were almost completely yellow. Yes I'm not the best grower in the World so I already know I can suck. No need in telling me.
http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=200087
The reason I posted both is the first didn't do all that poorly. The smoke I got was good. I liked it. Potency was not one hit zombie but it was good. Maybe using a CMH is the way to go for sativas? I know that plants that do well under a HPS yield much better under the HPS than than the CMH.

man you are just one bitchy dude arent you hempy ,,
you havent seen me saying your sativas are crap compared to what i grow outdoors ,,
i could given the evidence and pics i have to back it up , ,but i havent ...

ive grown sativas indoors hempy ,, do you think you are the only guy that has ,, im sure you do ,
some of us have try to keep our egos a little in check ,

you completely lack tact , and you are no help in threads like this ,,
you should stick to your spindly indoor sativas hempy .
.

Lack of tak lol please mate you seam to have a problem with me Donald and have for some time yes i mite get abrasive in some of my replies but its because i feel like i am dealing with a smart ass at times and i dont like smart asses.

You mite be a nice guy but for some time i dont seam to be seeing this in you and your replies towards me and i am not the only one noticing this.

You act like i have not grown out doors and have only grown indoors well sorry i grew for years out doors and my plants were huge ask any one that knows me about my out door plants think my indoor sativas look spindly well i can name some one you could ask with credibility to tell you just how good they looked but no point my pics speech volumes and what a Neville haze flower as thick as my arm not good inuf and it was not the largest flower.

You guys are kidding your selfs if you honestly think that sativas can not be grown indoors properly there are botanical gardens and many other indoor gardens around the world mimicking tropical and desert and other environments for plants to grow in and Eco systems to function yet your trying to tell me we cant grow a sativa indoors well i do as do many others so who is kidding them selfs here me or you.

Why is it for years i have posted things on indoor growing relating to sativas others have not is it because i am smarter than most NO its because i have made cannabis a big part of my life as i love the plant i study it and let the plant teach me.

I know there are different things indoor sativas need to growing sativas out doors and yet i have posted a lot of this info to help others and they pm me thanking me why is it you guys feel your right yet your the ones saying you cant do it or cant achieve as good a result in as you can out when others are that alone says a lot just there it tells me your not doing it as you should be.

Tell you what Donald show me a single indoor sativa pure sativa to match my thia above you have grown and i will take your challenge.

I am a guy that says it as i see it and sorry if i react when i am treated like a mushroom but that is being honest and that is who i am tak belongs in a womans tea party and bull shit belongs in a field or in a compost heap not in a grow forum were others are reading it trying to better there understanding of cannabis and how to grow it.

so if its the same .. lets see them as thick as your arm indoors hempy,...
what you are showing is a shadow of a sativa flower ..

im done with you hempy ,,
you are not worth argueing with ,
just dont respond to my posts with shit like you have in the last several post ,,
indirect seemingly ,, but not so ,,
stay in your closet with your spindly immature , starved for sun plants ,,
i noticed youve even overdone the ferts in the last pic
shame on you ...

Who's pushin' who's buttons?

I'm sure you fellas all grow some mighty fine sativas.
So grow em, and I'll do the testing :)

Nevil kicked the bass pedal to the haze treble and turned the base metal into gold

and uncle Sam was still in Vietnam, Afghanistan or somewhere freakier than Japan I'm told

and what the fuck am Irony he said?

he said he thought he said those jorge cervantes medical marijuana plantations looked like someone tried to stick a fucken jungle gymn on a marijuana plant

so in his mind he imagined Jorge the intrepid journalist climbing up to get a better look when he fell in and found a clown dressed in green and purple attending to a super silver sour diesel salvia divinorum who said he was a gynoecious haze brother and offered him a space cake ...and suddenly he was Joe Pietri growing tomyum haze on a hill in Hong Kong

hehe said he was looking for the acid pheno

DJ Bushweed, Dig it!

Without Hempy and some others, the majority of you would still be growing Sam's Skunk and Haze at Icmag.

We have shown you who were the real seed Kings.

You all should be a bit more grateful...

Peace.

In between the verbal fist to cuffs(sp?). I found this compact fluorescent with a high K temp rating.

* Spiral Aquarium Compact Lamp

Key Specifications
◇Watt:9W/11W/13W/15W/20W/24W/26W
◇Voltage:110V-240V
◇Base:B22/E27/E26
◇Color temperature:5000K/6500K/9000K/10000K/20000K
◇Other we have 50-50/ACT 03/colormax/PG etc.

Would there be much difference between the 10000K and 20000K. I've found 6500K for very reasonable prices.
23 Watt - T2 CFL - Reduced Length - 100 W Equal - 6500K Full Spectrum Daylight - Min. Start Temp. 0 Deg. F - 80 CRI - 70 Lumens per Watt - 15 Month Warranty - Energy Miser FE-IISB-23W-65K | 1000Bulbs.com
Maybe technology is catching up and indoor sativas are the wave of the future.
Can't find a price. I also just realized they're made in China. Hmmm... Some stuff you get from China is very good. Some stuff not so. You can't trust their specs a lot of times. I wonder if a US or European manf. makes these high temp K medium base CFL's?
After more looking. Amazon of course. Found various aquarium lights. The 50/50 ones such as this look interesting. Some are pricey.
Amazon.com: Mini Compact Fluorescent Colormax Lamp Light Bulb 50/50 - Home, Garden & Pets: Home & Garden

I wonder if the 50/50 would provide better growth for all plants?

I knew who was the King, before any icymag, OG or even the internets.

A magazine of old, a story they told. Of a man "Who would be King of Cannabis"

That king did spread his seeds far and wide. The seeds they grew and soon they knew. It was true. He really was "The King of Cannabis"

The seedy and the greedy soon came, to steal his game.
They knocked him down, they stole his crown.

But the job had been done, the finest in the land had been obtained, improved, and perfected. Spread far and wide for all to enjoy, and we still do. :)

Thanks Nevil

I've not tried 20k tubes, they are for aquariums, You can also get 14k ones. On ebay you can get 10, 14 and 20k halides and all sorts of fluoros, not looked at CFLs, I always use T5 and PL-L tubes as they are the most efficient and best suited to my setup.

I do not speak about you...

I always feel a bit embarrassed when I see the rudeness that several so-called 'breeders' express towards some honest growers like Hempy...

Peace.

K.

Not like hempy hasn't been rude in the past.

Karma can be a bitch.
