Panama Red was said to be the lowland Colombian Red grown in the Isthmus of Panama by the criminal gangs after large scale cultivation in Colombia became harder due to US sponsored raids. Noriega was in power in Panama so it was easy to grow a ton of dope there as they just paid Noriega off to ensure their crops were not raided.

I've trawled through my archive of old pics of magazines and can't find one single pic of a Panama Red bud or plant, there are tons of Colombian Gold pics but no Panama Red.

This is what DJ Short wrote about it:

Panama Red
From what I've gathered, Panama Red comes from any number of brash entrepreneurs who have damned the tides of oppression and grown copious amounts of primarily good old Colombian Red seeds in the wonderfully situated country of Panama, or any of her many isles.

Located a mere eight or nine degrees north of the equator, this tropical paradise has a coast on both the Pacific or the Caribbean Sea, without much distance between them, but a lot of elevation. The Panama Red that I am accustomed to was similar to the Colombian Red, but airier – not as compressed. It had a unique island flavor to it, with a spicy/sweet Sativa rush. Some called it the Tequila of herb, as it produced a high that greatly lowered inhibitions, creating a desire to consume more until it was too late!

For some drinkers, the Panama Red did not mix too well with alcohol, but for most it was a pleasant party high.

I did grow some seeds of Panama Red on more than one occasion. The plants were of the medium bushy character of the Colombian Red, with a little more hermaphroditism, and very long flower cycle (12 weeks indoor, late November outdoors). Unfortunately, however, this was at the same time that I was also growing the famed Highland Thai and new Afghan plants that were so unique, new and powerful, and the Panama Red became neglected.

Colombian Red
Colombian Red was the near polar opposite of Colombian Gold. This lowland jungle pot (possibly from Brazil) was made up of dark red, almost black, chunky little nuggets of what appeared to be hash, stems, leaf and seed. The aroma was that of cedar and hash.

In the early 1980's, the Red cost only $30 to $60 an ounce due to its appearance, making it one of the best deals going. This pot was a narcotic, knock-you-down-and-out, super munchie, red-eye express. The joints would only burn half way before drowning in their own resin! The smoke was very expansive in the lungs with a powerful pine/hash flavor.

Before subjecting its victim to fits of gorging and deep snoozing, the experience usually included ridiculously long spasms of uncontrollable laughter. The silliest little image could induce hilarity beyond belief. This was the main herb around when the Cheech and Chong movies first came out.

The plants from the Red were among the first grown out by Americans. There were many seeds, medium-sized and dark grey, that sprouted and grew easily into a finished product that was more than adequate. The plants grew low, dark, and bushy, with uneven and somewhat scraggly branches that were easily broken from wind damage. The locally grown varieties rarely budded very much, so it is not certain when they would have finished. It would have been relatively late in November at the earliest.

Well I did manage to find one crappy bud pic and it doesn't look red to me, there is a Laotion Red bud below it that is red however.

The second pic has a Panama Red bud in the middle, hard to tell as it's gone brown and looks to be pretty shitty.

It seams to many people love using names of strains from the past that are not any way related to the real deal and most would not know a real panama red if they fell into it in full flow it seams.

And as for OT1 haze well thats has as much bull shit in its story as a field full of bulls grazing.

Panama red was called PANAMA RED as the flowers were red not a few red pistils its like the canna community has evolved back wards in stead of evolved to a higher self.

Do you believe in the tooth fairy by chance as you seam to be very gullible.

Panama red by the way in the old days was not vued as super weed it was just good smoke and the week most would hear and run to was Buddha or Thia.

you always seem angry were you not loved as a child, are you not loved now, seem your very irrittable like you hav a perminant PMS,im not sure why your constantly getting fustrated in your old age cant get it up or somthin

did you feel i attacked you ?why do you feel the need to take shots always ,you were the coward that backed out of MR mallard offer after making your self look real silly Man up

this is the second strain of yesteryear you spoke of like its in your garden but have given a diaper of input on .CG was the first were i respectfully asked for som info but as usual you ignore n just react for bad vibez.we dont see eye to eye its clear but i dont throw shots infact i give you respect wen its called 4 ,wit no response ever  except to be negative

youve never completed agrow on here or have given asmoke report on the report you started ,im not the only one who asked for it .im not sure you completed a grow at IC either n you act like you kno everything wen its clear your not the brightest light in the grow room

the red pisitils are a trait of the punto rojo, the panama red was said too hav a green pheno aswell which i thnk BH touched on n dubi stated they used a green panama in the hybrid ,soo instead of being negative n always trying to knock somone why dont you be thankful that ACE seeds has tried to preserve some lines which are quite rarely availble in seed form on our market

the OT haze is somthin you never give credit to but you hav no experience with pure haze ,you have admitted this .you know nothin about OHAZE and its charcteristics ,you are familair with NH which is agreat represenation just not OHAZE dont forget that .the thai trait are nothin to do with haze but infact burning bush

i usually try to avoid this n i have lots to say about all this BS here lately at mns but wat will i accommplish ,you are somone that really rubs me the wrong way .your vibez attitude arent needed here your food for trolls .i guess you and many others enjoy the drama

i look forward to your nevs nugs ,i lov to see how they compare to my single handed experiences

enjoy ya night

There is a reason why they called panama red PANAMA RED the flowers were red that pan red cross has no red so has it got real pan red in it dought it i have yet to see any one on line to date post any picture of a plant being called pan red look like pan reds i saw growing in the late 70s early 80s

The only plant i saw was a guy from cw who had an old Angola sativa it had red flowers that was it nothing else to dates even looks close to the real pan red.

Hempy,

Were these the pics you speak of? These are pics glossed from a thread somewhere of Angola Red.

The Angola Red was a stunner. I have some seeds of it crossed to another African.

Grew a few, never saw a red pheno sadly.

Not saying red plants don't exist but to suggest that any plant that isn't red isn't Panama Red is ludicrous. There will have been red and green phenos and intermediate phenos with bits of red.

Very pretty these Angola Reds. I've never seen anything quite like it to be honest. What did it smoke like I wonder.

People argue about the most trivial things on this site. What gives?? I've been on forums for years and this one went to shit fast.
Too much ego for such a small space in my opinion.

Fake or not, the Haze I've burned from ACE is as real as any I've seen from any other company. Besides, don't most Europeans call any sativa a Haze?? Grows like a Haze, smokes like a Haze, must be a Haze!!
They don't call it Panama Red at ACE either, it's just Panama.

To the "knowitall's" I can assure there is nothing fake about the nug sitting on my keyboard in that pic;)

Peace!

New Riders of the Purple Sage

Panama Red,
It'll steal Your woman.
Then It'll rob your head!

Its a song performed by a local band that popped up same year as I started smoking weed. 1969. Some Members evidently became the Grateful Dead.

I surely didnt mean to get people angry. Its a song Folks.

Find Me some Cambodian Red, and Youve most likely found the Grails Mom. I got some from Dennis Peron in 1976 or 1977, in SanFrancisco. He was raided by dirth Police, after paying them off. They shot him. I never got to go back.I got a written perscriptin type note, with bigtop inports letter head, signed by Dennis, saying I was welcome to the secret pot shop anytime. Very Sativa, Very psycodellic, Like seeing colors during the day, from one hit

Have a great day all.
