Hi Nev. With regards to the striking similarity between Mullumbimby Madness and pure Haze, having given the concept some thought, I realise that it is possible that the two strains share a relationship beyond containing Thai genes from a certain region and era.

Starting from the early 60s, intrepid American surfers had settled in Byron Bay (15-20kms from Mullumbimby) because of the fabulous surf locations in the area, and these were followed by another large group of Americans who ariived there to escape conscription to Vietnam. This can be verified by the fact that the Californian film maker Bud Browne filmed a large portion of the Endless Summer, the most famous 60s surf movie, in Byron Bay.

Growing up in Byron Bay I had many friends whose parents were Americans, mostly reformed hippies, and mostly from California. In fact a couple of my good mate's parents were from Santa Cruz. Most of these people smoked and cultivated ganja and it is possible that Thai stick seeds that arrived in Byron Bay - made there way to the USA, or conversely - an early Haze made its way from the US to Byron Bay.

It's a definite possibility.

There is also a large Jewish community in and around Mullumbimby, and these people are also great travelers, collectors and sharers of Cannabis genetics.

That story about one of the Haze Bros. meeting a surfer down the Cali coast and being gifted the purple haze may not be as far fetched as people think. If you look thru the info I collected about Mullumbimby Madness, there is a report from an early 70s grower who stated that if the heads were left until mid May (which is an early time to harvest a pure sat like MM) they would all turn purple.

Of course its all speculation, but its good to know that some fresh genetics have come into your hands, (as well as the superb Oaxacan) via a source who has tirelessly worked, reworked and selected them for their vigour and potency, and that they may soon emerge into the public arena.

cool story bushy , but i reckin its grasping at straws a little ...

imo , genetics made from similar stock can produce similiar results ..
it doesnt mean they are the same ,, just similar parentage , lineage , ..

we all received the same sort of genetics t hat these "grails" hail from , so similar strains have come from them .

Well the latest evidence is that Hempy originally gave the Haze to a Californian surfer in the 60s. Needs to be ratified though:)

It was Me. It was 1969. He gave it to me. I had a rick james long board.
Im already in enough trouble this year, and next year looks worse.

mm yep,, well if we ignore the massive shipments of thai sticks round the world , these theories can be believed ..
personally , the logical thing ,, which is we all worked with similar genetics is more platable to me ...

darn sorry on the spelling there ,,
but surely you cant believe anything other than we worked with the best we had , which was thai ,, and some indian , columbian etc , i dont think it was a single person that influenced this ,, it was the generation ...

No Maui males

All 3 Maui Wowis went Female unfortunately. this is what I will have to use as pollenators now:

Maple Leaf/ LA Conf
Double Thai
Mexican/Orange Kush
Thunderbud haze
Golden tiger
Nevilles Haze
Vietnam Black/Thai
Old Time Haze
Mango haze
Oaxacan ((Oaxacan x Durban Poison) X Oaxacan

Here's an informed synopsis of the effect of adding a Mexican to a Haze line, from Ace seeds ...

crossing a long flowering haze with a good mexican is a good way to add happier effects and to reduce haze flowering time without indica genes in the mix. There's a famous mexican haze clone in Holland, it's a very nice smoke.
:D

Mexican Haze is supposed to be A5 (NL5Hz) crossed to a Mexican male. Story I heard was that they had some Mexican beans from some great import pot, beans were old having been saved years before. Only one germed, it was a male so they crossed him to their best female. Mexican Haze is sold in the Dampkring and is one of the best things in Amsterdam in recent times imho. Some similarities in high and taste to the Oaxacan I've grown so I expect the Mexican male they had was a highland Oaxacan/Acapulco/Michoacan type from the pacific coast southern Sierra Madres. Just my guess but it definitely reminds me of those typs of Mexican.

Nev, I'd love to see a good Mexican type from you. I know you had the Oaxacan #2 in the early catalogues, something like that blended with some NL5Haze could be very interesting. Hint hint. lol

Did you do an Oaxacan x Pollypak?

Let me see if I can do some mind reading here. Nev do you think these crosses would be the route you're thinking of taking?

NL5Haze x Mexican male

Mexican female x Nevil's Haze male

I can't help but think that a little bit of NL5 in there is essential, pure sats are great but not everyone lives in the tropics and indoors they are trouble for most of us.

I see that the Mango haze is dropping pollen this morning. My headband (Honeydew cut) is at 66 days. Im thinking about pollenating it with some of these hazes, on the lower branches and just let those finish out.
The Oaxacan is probably about to dump pollen too. Probably hit the headband with that too.
Maui Wowi and Super silver haze are in full bloom now too, and just about ready to pollenate as well. The Thais and green haze/thais are throwing a few hairs but going slow

Honeydew Headband

I hit this plant with the Mango haze pollen. Im smoking some early picked(at 63 days)Its lemony spicy wonderful, and possibly the finest job Ive ever done. It tastes fuckin wonderful and the High is instantanious.

I have a female Nepal?Himalaya plant that is currently being pollinated by an Original Haze Male,
if a special female comes from this I will cross that to the best Nevil's Haze F1
I can get from the seed I have.
{Nepal x O.Haze} X Nevil's Haze.
Nevil, if I get something nice from this ,Ill send you the nepal x o.haze and you can blend it to your NH male...worse case ,maybe some outback bush weed seed.
:D
