Hi Nev. With regards to the striking similarity between Mullumbimby Madness and pure Haze, having given the concept some thought, I realise that it is possible that the two strains share a relationship beyond containing Thai genes from a certain region and era.
Starting from the early 60s, intrepid American surfers had settled in Byron Bay (15-20kms from Mullumbimby) because of the fabulous surf locations in the area, and these were followed by another large group of Americans who ariived there to escape conscription to Vietnam. This can be verified by the fact that the Californian film maker Bud Browne filmed a large portion of the Endless Summer, the most famous 60s surf movie, in Byron Bay.
Growing up in Byron Bay I had many friends whose parents were Americans, mostly reformed hippies, and mostly from California. In fact a couple of my good mate's parents were from Santa Cruz. Most of these people smoked and cultivated ganja and it is possible that Thai stick seeds that arrived in Byron Bay - made there way to the USA, or conversely - an early Haze made its way from the US to Byron Bay.
It's a definite possibility.
There is also a large Jewish community in and around Mullumbimby, and these people are also great travelers, collectors and sharers of Cannabis genetics.
That story about one of the Haze Bros. meeting a surfer down the Cali coast and being gifted the purple haze may not be as far fetched as people think. If you look thru the info I collected about Mullumbimby Madness, there is a report from an early 70s grower who stated that if the heads were left until mid May (which is an early time to harvest a pure sat like MM) they would all turn purple.
Of course its all speculation, but its good to know that some fresh genetics have come into your hands, (as well as the superb Oaxacan) via a source who has tirelessly worked, reworked and selected them for their vigour and potency, and that they may soon emerge into the public arena.
