here we go.. lol Its all good Chris is just a hater that wishes hes had the chance to grow some of the genetics I have. I used to post at a different site a lot of the different varieties i have grown and an effort to share and learn. Chris was just a jealous individual and has never had anything positive to share. Im not bothered by him as I am here to lend my experiences and helping hand. Dont have time for online drama.. Im anxious to hear back from Neville

I have nothing against contributors Bigherb, con-artists yes

If anyone honestly cares, ask around to mods on other sites, the guy begs for genes and never returns the favor to the breeder with info....I see the same pattern as he always conducts

Jus dont want Nev to get sucked in or any others....

And Gfem.....trust me lil boy, this isnt hatin, cuz you'd have to up on something to create jealousy.....annnn I for sure aint the type.
You have an extremely warped vision of who've created on here and how your conduct has put you into positions

Be real guy, be real.....for once..please grow up

I haven't grown them out indoors, but I have seen them done outdoors. Outdoors they can easily push 18ft+, but most will end up 12-15ft on average. There are some occasional crosses that show up and those tend to have a very hazy background. Those look like NL#5xHaze when I usually see them, as they are crosses with indica clone females usually. Indoor you may be able to do sea of green with the pure Sativas and get them to finish in 85-120 days, if you tied them down.

have you seen the outdoor recently?

soo i gather you have seed

18ft+,dam i can imagine quite a yield of legendary smoke none the less

.

IMO few of the few pics ive seen of CG have looked quite hazey and actually share a close resemblence to nevilles haze,we know haze has colombian genes, it seems somtimes they are very dominant

my experience has been outdoor and while i throughly understand that pure sativas and sat dom hybrids will not finish depending on your location ,i like to push things too the limit and somtimes i like too see for myself ,last year was my first experience with a haze hybrid and both neville haze and sk/hz finished outdoor in NYC quite surprising but these were mature and i was very impressed ,soo this year i got 1 nev's 2 hillbillyhaze ,NH is a plant i will forever have in my garden

Does any 1 know what was the strains that went from the carribean to s. america in days gone past. Hey shanti is manga rosa 1 of the parents of black widow?

Did Mendo Joe become Romulan Joe later in his life? If its the same guy, he did a terifiic job on the Romulan also IMO. That is an awesome WRhino hybrid IMO. :)_~

Yeah, he later became Romulan Joe. The story about Skunk is that there were a small group of 6 guys living in the Bay Area, they were members of the Sacred Seeds Collective. Between them they developed a number of hybrids using some of the earliest Afghanica seeds that arrived in the Bay Area, by 1975, what became known as Skunk was in existence, the different folks within Sacred Seeds took it in different directions, Mendo Joe liked the more stinky, indica variants and took those with him when he migrated north to one of the Vancouver Islands. Romulan was Joe's grapey super-stinky development of the Skunks he took to Canada. The original Romulan cutting was never very widely spread, Joe was a reclusive vietnam vet biker, but he did pass the cutting out to some people. Someone (maybe Joe himself) crossed the Romulan cutting to a White Rhino and a female from that mating is now widespread under the name Romulan. I think it was mid-78 that Joe left for Canada, he was still around the Bay Area in late-77 but disappeared after that for a good few years until he resurfaced in Canada.

According to Sam's posts at icmag, Skunk is an f2 Afghan/Colombian male crossed to a highland Mexican then heavily linebred from there.

To be honest, I doubt anyone knows what really went into the original Bay Area Skunk, the people who were doing the work were on the fringes of society, outlaws, bikers, Vietnam vets, they weren't keeping records. At least 2 of the original 6 guys involved are said to be passed away, Mendo Joe is definitely RIP, it is said others spent long stretches in prison, if anyone who was involved is still both alive and free, they left the cannabis scene a long time ago, so the details have been lost in the mists of time, sadly.

I've talked to a few people who were living in the Bay Area in the 60s and 70s and they assure me that Sam wasn't a known face in the local scene, they think he showed up in the early 80s as part of Green Merchant, but let's not get into all that! lol One known fact is where California Orange came from. Jerry Biesler bred it from various lines he collected while he was living in Afghanistan in the late 60s, it was finished by 71-72, so we know it's lineage (a mixture of Afghanicas), it's breeder and the timeline of when it was created, unlike the histories of Skunk, Haze etc. Jerry B got divorced and Sam bought a load of Cali O seeds from Jerry's ex-wife, I forget what year that was, and that is the source of the Cali O genes Sam took to Holland with him in 1985. All the variants of Cali-O you can buy today have been crossed with a Skunk at some point to boost the yield, older heads assure me that the original all-Afghanica Cali-O was pretty special, can't say I think very much of any Cali-O I ever smoked in Holland.

Jerry's seed company was Exotica seeds, I believe I posted that earlier in this thread. Jerry's Orange Spice was a combination of Afghanica and sativa. Jerry would be a wealth of information regarding the lines they imported to California, from Laos, Thais, Viets, Lumbos, Mex, Indians, Afghans, Kushes etc. Jerry is still alive but in poor health these days.

BTW, how are you doing BH? I got some pics of the Purple Thais just starting to flower and show off the purple traits.

Also with regards to Romulan, there is a cutting in Arcata/Mendo that I've tried which is something special. The taste is very sweet and not piney, the high is very clear and social with an absolute clear euphoria. This might be remnants of the original Romulan.

Secondly I have spoken to Rob Clarke a few times about places we consider to be the last of the undiscovered land races of sativas and we both agreed it to be in the area above Calcutta to Burma...Nagaland, Arunashal Pradesh area. I have permits with several friends to visit in October and we will be in the hunt to speak with the tribes people and going on Rob`s visit and analysis it seems a few tribes in particular...but I will not mention them so as not to expose exact locations. So this is something that holds potential.
Lastly I received lately a few special seeds from a man who just passed away on the island of Reunion . He had been growing a strain known as many names but this was the source of the original ZAMAL sativa grown at an altitude of 1350m for as long as 40 years...and this is ready for preliminary work so I will keep you all informed of the outcome.

My grandfather and uncle both served in the British Indian Army in the region you mention, specifically the Kohima/Imphal area in 1944 and then my grandfather was in the Arakan and Irrawaddy regions of Burma in 1945. My uncle is buried near Kohima, it's long been a goal of mine to go see his grave, he was my father's elder brother and my family all say I look the spitting image of him, he was 22 when he died.

Anyways, I hope you do make it there and find some untouched landraces.

Funny you should mention Zamal, pure Zamal from Gypsy's stock and the Zamal x Neville's Haze Female Seeds did are both capable of producing absolutely amazing plants. The Zamal genes are extremely varied, incrossing produced immense variation and I'm almost certain it's a mix of South Indian and Thai sativas, probably with other sources bordering the Indian Ocean in the mix too. La Reunion isn't the only island with very old cannabis genes, I know there are very old Thai genes being grown on New Caledonia, I reckon the islands of the Indian Ocean would be a very good place to look for very old genes. The Andaman Islands is probably a good place to look, some of them are closed to visitors by the Indian govt, in fact, there were uncontacted tribes there until quite recently.

Of course, we know that the Thai genepool is gone and the Colombian genepool is mostly 'crippi' hybrids of the old local genes and modern imports, but there are other options, surely? Africa would seem to be the great 'undiscovered continent' in cannabis terms. I know Arjan went to Malawi, but that was a joke! I have a lot of South African and Zimbabwean friends through my cricket playing days and they all tell me that the best weed they ever saw was brought south from central Africa in small amounts by individuals, I've heard so many tales about that weed over the years, I've smoked a few samples either mailed or smuggled (you'd be amazed what smuggling opportunities exist within the luggage of a cricket team! lol) and I've grown a few strains from Angola, Congo, Nigeria etc. There is a lot of potential there and it's pretty much untapped, I have a fair collection of African seeds, just need to grow em!

I know it's not easy to explore 'the dark heart of Africa' but I expect that is where some very old and special genes can be found.

Sorry I missed that info you posted, I'm only as far as page 46 out of 53, it's a long thread!

I know Jerry B is ill, that's a real shame, his book is really good, not sure all of it is 100% true, but I think the bulk of it is and the variation from actuality is probably more due to the vagaries of memory and attempts to protect identities etc. than any bad motives. A mutual friend passed a message to me from Jerry a while back, I've since lost all interest in the historical research I was doing due to personal problems, so I never followed up on it, it would have been great to pick Jerry's brain, but life got in the way.

My own health has been slowly declining since I got out of jail in Holland, so things aren't very good for me right now, I'm also without a computer, just I happen to be house-sitting for a friend this weekend so I'm taking the opportunity to play with his fancy Macbook!

Glad to hear the Purple Thais are doing well. I lost the bulk of my seed collection and the original Purple Afghan stock is gone, as is the Purple Thai work. I did try growing out the remaining pure Thai seeds and only got three to sprout, two were crappy with hardly any vigour, the third was a monster that refused to show sex regardless of light schedule, I eventually tossed it after nearly 6 months of patiently waiting! If anyone still has some Purple Thai seeds, I highly recommend making f2s as there won't be any more of them and there is a lot of potential for great plants in that line, roughly 75% of the females I've grown or seen grown by others were purple, and there were some excellent individuals. I always planned to further work that line as I saw a great deal of potential there.

I expect the original Romulan is still around, but I doubt it will be easy to track it down. When things in Cali started turning sour in the late 70s a lot of the bikers who were doing much of the breeding and growing got on their bikes and went north, some of them to the remoter parts of Oregon, some of them kept going until they hit Vancouver and the islands, they were the guys who started the indoor growing scene in the PNW, the Vancouver scene was started by bikers, they would setup in barns and other remote buildings, DIY recirc dwc systems (the infamous 'biker buckets'), they'd dig a hole in the ground to put the res in and keep it cool, setup a couple of dozen buckets, hang 40-50 lights in bare vertical fixtures and grow trees. Krusty and doubleds have documented this style of grow in great detail, if you ever saw any of Krusty's old threads, that was exactly how the bikers were doing it. These were very crude setups, they'd use whatever they could find, plastic packing peanuts were a common medium for the baskets, as was river gravel (lots of rivers and streams in that part of the world, lol) and they used basic nutes like powdered 20-20-20 all-purpose with some 0-50-30 mono PK powder. Of course, there are still loads of guys up there still doing this kind of thing, where do you think the bikers get their bud from?

Anyways, Romulan came out of that early biker bucket scene up in the islands of Vancouver and I expect it can still be found up there, but it will be closely hoarded and unless you're a patch-wearing member with the right connections I can't see it being very easy to get close to getting hold of a cut.

I wonder how many orders Neville got from guys who had moved north from Cali and discovered the seeds they took with them weren't suitable for indoor hydro growing? The sativas that flourished in the Cali sun weren't going to work in a biker bucket setup in a barn in Vancouver or Oregon so they needed new genes. Things like Northern Lights were bred in the region to enable indoor hydro growing, but I expect that a lot of those guys sent some greenbacks to Neville for new seeds. Quarter of a century later, Neville would probably love to get hold of the original Cali genes the bikers discarded when they moved north, funny how things have changed.

Incidentally, there is a guy in Canada called doubleds who really rocks one of those recirc DWC bucket setups with bare bulbs, he was one of two guys who invented a motorised sifting screen, it was featured in HT and they reckoned they took two of them to Amsterdam for the first cup in 1987. The story is one was to be a prize for the cup, they say the other one was given to Neville in exchange for cuttings of his two best indicas - G13 and NL5. Doubleds still has both cuttings and has done many detailed grow threads showing them grown as huge trees in his recirc DWC system. Just wondering if Neville remembers this and can confirm it's true. If it is, it means doubleds still has the original G13 cutting. Few years back I sent doubleds some seeds that were an inbred derivation of 'Pacific' G13 x ('Airborne' G13 x Black Widow) a line that was notorious for producing mostly male plants (the few females to be had were killer) so that he could make a cross to his G13 cutting, last I heard he had grown em out and selected a couple of choice males but hadn't had time or space to devote to pollinating the G13, I should get in touch with him, I'm sure the original G13 is something that would be worth preserving and spreading.

P.S. Sorry for taking things a bit off-topic!

You know, I spent a ton of time researching the history of the cannabis scene, I tracked down and spoke to a lot of old timers, read virtually everything written, and after a year or so I decided I had no more interest in it.

Simple reason why - almost without exception, the people I talked with had a lot of hatred and anger which they vented at various others. For example, I spent 4 hours on the phone to one old timer in Oregon who must have used the phrase 'So-and-so is full of shit' 100 times in those 4 hours. Sure, he had a lot of interesting info to share, and he did freely, but in equal measure, he had a lot of bile and hatred to spew, and I'm not prepared to try and muck-rake through it all to try to filter the good info from that which is coloured by personal opinions.

I started my research because I was genuinely interested in learning the history of the cannabis scene, I stopped when I realised what I was finding would mostly cause problems, arguments and bad feelings, I decided it was better to 'let a sleeping dog lie' and not rake over the coals of old fires that were better extinguished.

So now I am only interested in the actual plants, the past is the past and I prefer to look to the future, I think it would be better if we all did the same.

Excuse for a little input. Purple Thai... mmmmm
Here is my two cents - F-13 by DJ Short, the best off in my opinion from these lines :) really as description from him: Holy Grail plant of four-star excellence

Click to pics for resize.

I have yet to try F-13 but I'm familiar with Flo. I like Flo a lot as a smoke, but I hate trying to grow it, the green pheno is the only one that isn't problematic and is the only one with a yield that could be considered 'good'. I think the green one is the Oaxacan pheno. However, that one is the least desirable in terms of complexity of high and taste (like Nev I think they go hand-in-hand) and the best phenos in those terms are the least vigourous, smallest yielding, more tricky to grow ones that show the most Oregon Purple Thai influence. Interestingly, I happen to have a pheno of Purpurea Ticinensis that is extremely freaky and looks like the OPT from Prarie Fire/Reeferman I grew years ago. Purpurea Ticinensis is a strain from Felix in Switzerland, he claimed to have found it growing as an ornamental in an old lady's garden. Felix and Breeder Steve were neighbours so there is a possibility that Purpurea Ticinensis is actually related to Oregon Purple Thai as we all know Steve grew a ton of DJ's genes.

Anyways, what I'm getting at is this, Oregon Purple Thai would fit the bill as a female parent to cross to a Nev's Haze male if the criteria for selection are quality of high and quality of taste, it has it all in those regards, but it has the sizeable downsides of minimal yield, extreme freakiness and very difficult to grow. DJ considered it to be so good that he chose it as the core of his work and I would love to see Neville work with it.

So there ya go Nev, see if you can get your hands on a good quantity of Oregon Purple Thai seeds, I bet that with some careful and skilled work, the unique and special qualities of the OPT can be harnessed without the drawbacks of it's freakiness and trickiness. It's not leathery and livery like the Thais you speak of but it has all the complexity of high and taste you seek.

Here is a line worked toward the Oregon Purple Thai phenotype.. it was bred by RC Cola.

Gawd this is a long thread, a work in progress I guess.
I just want to thank you all, this research ultimately benefits people like me most (15 years MS), all of this fallout leaves the med scene chock full of relief for those suffering.
Thank You
BH, great to see you posting bro, I still have the Zamal/haze you sent me on ice, cant wait to try that one out, Ill try and cross it to either highland Nepal or maybe a killer landrace Afghan, see what I get.
Ill be setting up an attic grow and Im looking for a big plant that can be trellised and grown perpetually. I mean harvested and re-vegetated again and again in the same setup, growing and spreading and from what Ive read Zamal is very much that kind of plant. Correct me if Im wrong but they grow into trees on the island and never die.
My friends girlfriend is an adventure tourist guide and shes been briefed to scour the world for seeds for me, hopefully shell get on reunion soon.
Cheers ol bean

Oregon Purple Thai seems to come highly recommended by people who should know what they are talking about. What's your opinion Snow? How does it rate compared to others of it's type?
The structure of the Maduro reminds me of the Oaxacan I once had.

N.

I've smoked the Maduro and some other hybrids which have Oregon Purple Thai (Purple Thai) in them. The high is electric, trippy and visually colorful. Its hybrids are also grounding without paranoia. The smells are always deep and rich like Italian Lumbrusco wine.

Oregon Purple Thai is: Highland Oaxacan Gold x Chocolate Thai.

I've been meaning to recreate this hybrid (OPT) in a more modern form. I just crossed the Maduro with Acapulco Gold x C99 (male).

I'm thinking adding a Oregon Purple Thai or a Delores Purple Thai would be a good match for Nevilles Haze and they both have good bud structure, high resin production.. funny now that I'm thinking about it. I crossed a Purple Thai male to a MNS Nevilles Haze (f3), the purple Thai was not the Oregon Purple Thai but a Purple Afghan x Highland Thai. I only was able to sprout one seed from that pollination as the others didn't pop. So I have a Nevilles Haze (f3) x Purple Thai (male), I also have several purple Thais (females) and other Thais I could cross that male NH x PT.

Nevil,

Let me see if I can upload some more pics of the Maduro for you.. and Flo close up shots.

Hey Snow I was just wondering if your OPT is more stable than the one Reeferman grew. I read somewhere once that the strain he was growing pissed him off so much he wanted it dead because of its mutancy.
Lol....now that is getting upset.
Looks nice though and doesnt seem to be any troubles with that one.....nice pics mate.

mendo joe

British Hempire, you have clearly spoken to some people "in the know" of west coast history, do you really believe the whole mendo joe = romulan joe story? A huge part of nom de fleurs "other sacred seeds story" revolves around this and no one ever mentions the opposing romulan story that predates nom de fleurs account by several years and comes directly from someone that for certain acquired the cut directly from Romulan Joe... Jay from Next Generation; part owner of the very first seed company ever to sell romulan--(federation seeds). Romulan was not even named until late 90's and then it was by the staff at hemp bc.. who also gave the source the name romulan joe. Pretty sure rom's actual name is port alberni pine bud. The story from Jay is no where near as romantic as nom de fleurs.. just a plain ol back yard in bc and a mismash of genetics, pretty sure he has the whole account on his website. I want to believe nom de fleurs sacred seeds version of events but there are too many holes in the story imo.

ps. flo/purple thai get my thumbs down for the grail.. just not a good match imo two different ends of the sativa spectrum.

My nose is twitching again, do we know anthing about the HOG?
N.

From DJ Short

The Oaxaca Highland Gold, somewhat similar to the Colombian Gold, lacked bright gold color but sported purple and red calyx tips on its blondish-brownish-green buds. It had larger buds surrounded by long, skinny leaves. It was a nearly pure Sativa which grew tall at 45°N, outdoors. It was also one of the most symmetrical Sativas I have encountered. The plants grew long side branches toward the bottom, and the even growth made these productive beauties look like Christmas trees when mature.

The Finished Product: A very sweet and spicy herb of the highest quality, with a hint of fruity pine aroma. ) A certain, unmistakable flavor comes to mind: that of incense cedar/frankincense/burgundy/floral with spicy/savory undertones. Coffee, chocolate and fine tobacco were also present, but the sweet incense cedar is what I most recall from the Highland Oaxaca. It produced the most desirable finished product, in my opinion, and has yet to be replicated to my complete satisfaction. The seeds for this variety were small, dark and round, and the plants exhibited slight signs of hermaphroditism and required surveillance to maintain seedlessness.

The High: A long lasting, creeper high that kept coming on in waves over the hours, this stuff had no ceiling. One phenomenon consistently reported from the Highland Oaxaca experience was that of peripheral visual distortions of primarily cartoon color images. This tended to increase the visual distortions caused by other psychedelics such as mushrooms or LSD.

Never heard anything about Hermies in any of the Mex's I saw or tried.
Could it possibly be caused by growing under lights ??

A bit more...

Highland Oaxaca Gold vs. Chocolate Thai:
The Highland Oaxaca was structurally a different strain (tall, with a definite main-stem, symmetric with less hermaphroditism and better formed buds). The two were crossed and the resulting seeds produced the famed Purple Thai that I was able to use for quite awhile. The Purple Thai exhibited the symmetry and desirability of the Oaxaca with the potency and dark coloration of the Chocolate Thai–the best of both worlds, and its hermaphroditism was much more manageable. It also cloned well. The plants from these seeds also passed the test of equal or improved quality progeny in terms of finished product. Personally I preferred the finished product of the Purple Thai to the Chocolate, not just due to its growth patterns but in terms of the overall effect.
