It's a shame that African Seed Co stopped producing, they had some really nice strains. Afropips sort of took over where they left off but from what I can see they're all out of stock/discontinued, no idea why. I always get Karie surprise mixed up with Caribe by CBG/Cannabiogen.

To me Pure African landrace seeds are really interesting, I'm surprised more people don't breed with them, it can only be a good thing crossing African genetics with other known top shelf strains.

Yes, African lines are very interesting, they tend to be wild and need heavy selection pressure.

I have some Swazis going now, just cloned the best two females, only got one male and it looks like a runt.

I did do a Malawi Gold x Colombian Gold cross a few years ago, need to revisit that one soon, I also did Swazi x Blueberry and I did grow a few but I think I only got males.

That Malawi Gold can be a bit of a pain, it's a lovely strain but low yielding. Yup, i totally agree that african strains need a lot of work done on them as they tend to have a huge amount of variability. I'm a bit out of touch with what the South African growers are up to these days, but they always have some interesting strains that they've worked on for years.

The Malawi I grew had two types, one was low-yielding, grew small buds all over a huge plant that grew lots of long arms giving it the look of a candelabra in structure.

The other type yielded quite well as it grew large but fluffy colas and had a preference for growing a large centra cola.

FFS! In one day there's 5 new pages of arguing. Exactly the crap I love to read through when I am trying to get to something that's actually related to this thread.

I wish we had a time out corner. :D

Anyways, I saw Malawi Gold brought up at the end of the thread, and I actually decided last night to start 10 Afropips Malawi Gold. No clue if its genuine or not, and the seedbank didn't even send the breeders package , so who knows if its actually Afro MG to begin with.

I think Ill start a grow log of it here since there are more Sativa lovers at this site than any other Ive gone too. Hopefully something nice comes out of it.

haha thanks for the laughs guys, im not usually one to rub ppls noses in it but i just can't resist!

BRITISH BULLSHIT HEMPIRE .... on more than one occasion youv slaged cheese off as being a mediocre strain at best, so if its so mediocre why were you breeding with it?? well i say " breeding" more hacking with it??? just o cash in on the hype?? must be as youv said plenty of times its just a mediocre skunk1.... not sure about the rest of you but i only breed and more importantly grow plants that i ador!!

again forgive me as im realy not a mud slinger but on this occasion i think its warranted!

Be more respectful Mr 34 posts. And practice what you preach:

"DONT CONDEMN A MAN UNTILL YOU HAVE WALKED IN THEIR SHOES! ONE MANS HELL IS ANOTHER MANS HEAVEN!"

I'd love to stay on topic but if I ignore all of the attacks on me it gets silly...

The Afropips Malawi was genuine so if the seedbank sent you the real Afropips seeds then you have proper Malawi and a good one it is, too. Makes great hybrids, cross it to something short and fast and look throiugh the f1s and if you run the numbers enough you will find a plant that has the Malawi high taste and character but in a shorter, faster form. I did that with my Colombian, crossed it to a Mazar-i-Sharif Afghan and am going through the f1s now, found a couple that are very close to the Colombian but I'm actually preferring a pheno why is more a blend of the lembo and affie, smoking it right now and it's going to mean an early night I think, after a while the high turns narcotic...

Thanks for the reassurance on the MG. Im also starting Black Widow with it as well. I intend to cross them together. Im thinking of calling it either Black Malawi, or Malawi Widow. I like both.

I currently have the space to run about 15 females under my t5s for selecting. Ive actually got 13 females in flower of my first attempt at 'breeding' (Sam's O.Haze x Skunk #1) x Mr. Nice Shit. Its quite an experience to grow out your first cross made. Its interesting to see a plant with short fat leaves and long internodal distance. I can't wait to explore these ladies.

Widow x Malawi sounds interesting, you could select both indica and sativa males from the widow to cross to the malawi or select a malawi male to hit both indica and sativa widows...

Yes, I definitely plan to do that. Ill be using BW males. Shanti suggests using BW males for breeding, so Ill take his word. Im sure Ill hang onto some Malawi Males too. Maybe play with them some too.

I've had some success using males from sativa lines, most notably the Colombian Gold, made crosses of it both ways - using males and females and the ones with males seem to be pretty damn good, the ones with females seemed to have less Colombian dominance in the f1 stage.

Shanti used a widow male in a few of his hybrids, one that comes to mind that is relavent to your situation is La Nina, where he crossed a widow male to a mullumbimby madness.

You could copy this by crossing a widow male to your best Malawi female.

Ask Shanti for tips on selecting a Widow male...

Look Who is back

I went out to snap a few haze pics and there she was in the pot garden again, standing watch over my girls.
She is letting me get pretty close now.

I had forgotten about her and almost walked right into her. She flew up but came right back close to me and alit above the plants, like she was waiting for me

Well put

I never said fems were the best thing since sliced bread at all, I was highly critical of the hacks who use the technique to make seeds from cuttings of well known strains like SSH, Critical Mass etc to turn an easy profit, I've been saying this for years.

What I did argue with you about and still stand by is that there is nothing wrong with the feminising process, it is a useful tool in a breeder's arsenal, but like many tools is open to abuse - I mean, you can use a hammer to build a fence but also to smash someone's head in, don't denegrate the tool just because it is open to mis-use by some people with bad motives.

The crux of the argumet we had was that you had all these strange notions about feminising changing genes and other wierd things like that. I pointed out and still point out, that all that happens when you spray silver ions on a cannabis plant is that the silver ions inhibit the ethylene hormone and this prevents the formation of female flowers.

You see, the genetic information to produce male flowers must be present within the female otherwise spraying with silver would not work.

An analogy would be the gynocomastia(sp) that bodybuilders suffer, they take so many drugs that mess with their hormones that they suffer a condition colloquially known as 'bitch tits' - proper name gynoecomastia, in short, they grow female breast tissue, many bodybuilders and steroid abusers have had to have cosmetic surgery to remove this excess breast tissue.

The drugs the bodybuilders take don't alter their dna, they just mess with their hormone levels, the genes to grow female tits must already be present.

Same thing with cannabis, spraying silver to feminise doesn't alter the plant's genes it just messes with the hormone levels which allows the male gene to express itself.

So you're quite wrong, I haven't changed my view at all.

As for your critisism of 'breeders', I'd like you to quote any instances where I have applied that tag to myself, I'm just a grower who likes to grow unusual and rare heirlooms and cross em or if I find a really good one like the Colombian Gold I make a load of seeds of it and share em with people that would appreciate and enjoy the strain or those who like me, like to dabble in making their own hybrids and would like to assess the strain for possible use in their own work.

Interesting we had a few pages of good discussion with no arguing or negativity then along comes hempy...

I dunno, some people just can't resist calling others names, it reflects on their own character flaws imho

I'm one who can't afford to buy a bunch of packs of seeds at 100 dollars a pop then grow them out and throw them away, I buy one or two packs and use a male if I find a decent one. I am not greedy, give most of my stuff away, and I definitely take offense at Hempy lumping me in with the guys who charge 100's of dollars for shit genetics that hermie all over the place. Get a grip, not everybody is out to rip people off.

Dr. Purpur
Sounds like you have your own personal groupie just like a rock star :D

I understood

It wouldnt matter. Its all organic!

Shes out there right now. She stays in the pot garden. She lets me get pretty close

Problem is those with no knowledge continue to shit on those who do.

Get over your issues with bh already. If you dont like the dude dont buy his shit. But stop talking shit about the dude especially when he formulates full legible sentances and paragraphs. He does a pretty decent job explaining himself, you may not like his personality but the dude is a smart cat.

In a free market economy the consumers decide what to buy.

Saddest thing of all coop, it's all part history these guys are banging on about, I can't remember how long it is exactly but I think it's nearly 2 years since I sold a seed and besides, total number of packs of seed I sold through breedbay is probably not much more than 50, I never made much money, the seeds were cheap, the descriptions were accurate and in almost all cases were genes you couldn't get elsewhere, things I went to great lengths to obtain an then put the work into working and selecting, where the strains were tested there were pictures and detailed info, in the few instances where they were untested, this was clearly stated.

I sold seeds at breedbay via auction for about 2 years, I have retired from that, I still make seeds in small numbers, mostly for my own benefit but also to be able to share the things I think valuable with those who would appreciate having them or would like to breed with them themselves.

I don't expect nor want anyone to speak out and say what I've given them or what use it was to them but I will say this - I have helped a lot of people and for every seed I sold I must have given away 100.

So fling all the shit you want, I know I'm not perfect, no-one is, but I really don't see what point there is in this continual character assassination. Funny thing is, apart from one exception, not one of the people who actually know me has a problem with me or what I have done in my seed making and sharing activities, all the hatred is coming from people who don't know me at all.

Anyways, enough about me, can we please try to stick the the topic of this thread.

I haven't got any plants flowering to show pics of atm as I'm in the middle of stripping down and sterilising my space as I had yet another recurrence of the dreaded mites. Waiting to go into flower are some Colombians and Swazi and a hazy 11-12 week pheno of SSH. I've added a 80W UVB lamp and 4 x 30W UVB tubes as I want to try to get these sats to express more like they would in the tropics.
