First dance with Mango

I said in my critical mass thread that I was tempted to germ a 4th strain to kickstart my home garden..... and Mango Haze won that lottery (I really did a random number generator to pick between 5 strains)

I have lots of Mango crosses.... and a pack of Mango inbred from the auctions. So I'll run the Mango first, see what I like about it, then run the ibl (where I might use a male) and some of the crosses to see what Shanti wanted me to find in it.

Anyhow, 15 seeds in the pack, after 12 hours we have 12 underwater. Not a bad start. They'll keep soaking through the evening. With any luck, some will crack and I'll use that water to add to the zip lock of old indica seeds I'm trying to germ (also pictured). Some real old school nonsense lmao

Thanks buds, im excited for it

At 20hrs soak, all 15 had submerged, though one still clearly had an air bubble in it (was a little floaty at the bottom of the cup). A few starting to crack, no visible roots yet

They're in dirt now, ill update in a few days when they have presented themselves

Alright, since it's been 5 days, and only 4/15 mango have emerged from the soil, ingot my surgical tweezers out and decided we needed to have an exploratory operation.

I found 3 of them curled under the dirt. I'm hoping all three of these survive. They have a chance, now.

One more I found with a tap root coming out, and the rest appeared to be un-initiated. So I've left the remaining 8 to hopefully do their thing

Little bit of a rough start, but its not done yet

Of those 3 dug up mango, 2 have survived and thrived. So far, 6/15 mango

The third of the dug up ones has uprighted itself, but I think it won't go any further. Growth tip appears to be pinched

Still hopeful I do better than 40% germ on these. 6 is better than 0, but it sucks compared to the 18/18 on critical mass beside it.

Anyhow, here's the serious 6

Alright, I was unlucky getting only 6 plants, but it could have been worse.... ended with 3f and 3m

The three females all appear fairly similar, with slightly tart yet sweet citrus notes (really does make me think of a mango).

They've been tipped, and that cut is attempting to root. If any of the 3 don't root, I'll have plenty more chances. No intention to flower the seed plant on these at this time

The males, one smells very much of mango, one hasn't developed a strong nose yet (the runt of the group, still playing catchup), and one that looks and smells a little different; slightly more broad leaves, and smells like a blend of pepper and pine. That's the male in this pic

situation has changed slightly.... the bloom tent is all full up. No room to tuck in a clone of each mango like I had hoped

so, just going to veg and trim the moms back for the next couple of weeks, and start thinking about clones to run into the tent in a month or so. unfortunate, but there are worse problems to have

While we wait another 4-6 weeks to go on the NLD / long flowering plant hunt, I've decided to add a couple of last minute entries

First up, Mango Haze Inbred Line, to hopefully compensate for the poor luck I had with Mango Haze f1s germination

And second, my oldest pack of beans, and one I've always cherished. Breeder died in late 2008 or 2009, 100% not replaceable. I've had the seeds for 17 years, so they're nearly 20 years old or more......
Afropips Malawi99..... his Malawi Gold x Cinderella 99.

Hopefully I get something

Well, I got something, not a lot but there's still a chance (maybe? hopefully?).

So far, 5/17 mango IBL emerged. Not going to lie, I'm a little bummed. That's a combined 11/32 germination on mango haze and mango IBL. Better than nothing, but still

On a surprising note, 4/12 Malawi 99s are up and greening, too. I really had tempered expectations on these, because of age (20 years old), so 4 is awesome.

Strikes and gutters, ya know

Hope there is some vigor in them Malawi 99s. Love to see you get something nice there!

Longball
You and me both, thanks LB. Wish I had bought the straight Malawi gold too, or his congo, but back in the late 2000s I was a little more intimidated by the idea of growing pure sativa expressions than I am now, but hopefully I can find it in these.

I have some f2s of congo99 from The Rev (KOS), and his cherry Malawi (his Malawi x cherry bomb). Don't see them talked about much.

More beans than time...

Well, I spoke too soon

One of the Mango Inbred seedlings damped off, and another one is on the brink

So as of now, I got 3/17 for sure

Kinda sickening, but it is what it is.
