Hello All...:D

I am seriously considering attending DJ Short's class next month...I have read his book several times cover to cover...highly recommended, if you haven't already picked it up...I have so many questions of my own, but I also wanted to open the floor to any questions that any of you may have for him...I'll ask him as many as time permits, but no promises...I think it would be real interesting for him to answer questions from the MNS camp as a group...please post any and all questions that you would love for DJ to answer, and I will see what I can do...this includes you too, Shanti...I'd love to ask him one of your questions, whatever that might be...anyway...all the best and looking forward to seeing your questions...if anyone would like some information on the class, just let me know...take care...jay:)

You lucky son of a bitch! That sounds amazing, let us know how it goes. Maybe suggest to him or the organizers to put in mic or two and do an audio recording of the session, like a college lecture. I would love to hear what the guy has to say.

He mentioned that he has been working on re-releasing Blue Velvet...Rose Bud and Azure Haze are also in the works...but no pure sativas, sorry...he said that he has not been able to source/find the Black Magic African, but if & when he does he will definitely work that line...his descriptions of that herb were incredible to say the least...he also said his plate is always full...he's always working on something, but no pure sativas...he talked more about the Highland Oaxaca Gold than the Colombian Gold, but he says that he is very close to being able to replicate the Highland Oaxaca Gold experience...his breeding goal seems to be to recreate the effects of the strains of yesteryear, and not to necessarily recreate the strains themselves...as I understand it, he always thinks in terms of moving forwards and creating something better/unique/different...moving backwards is not his thing...his goals are both clear & defined...jay:)

Audio Recording!

Funny you should mention that...for the first time ever, someone did actually record both classes...DJ said it was ok...I have the gentlemen's contact info, so if he puts it up anywhere I'll try to make it available here...as it is, I took as detailed a notes as I could...the first day he mostly lectured...the second day was all questions and answers...it was better than any book I've ever read...I felt like I was listening to Shanti or Neville himself...I learned so much my mind is still reeling from the experience...I have so much to share with you all...I will be posting all the notes I took during the class, as well as information that DJ shared privately with me...can't wait to share my experiences with you all...these are very exciting times indeed...hope everyone's doing well...peace...jay:)

hey jaybutta

nice to hear you made it to the classes

would love to see the notes you kept and any other worthwhile info he shared about our beloved plant

wish I had grown more of his stuff , his Flo was really nice and unique plant , very different than what i ve grown so far , really nice smoke n effect , real mood changer
bTW which line/s have you tried from DJ jay?

sounds like a once in a lifetime experience.....:)

any info is most welcome...:)

It was definitely a surreal experience...as I understand it, I can go to any of his future classes for free...if you have any questions for DJ, let me know...jay:)

I didn't think I'd make it, but thank God I did...I'm debating on exactly how to cover the class...I have a syllabus for the class, my notes, and my thoughts on the class, on him, and on what he had to say...I didn't realize it at the time, but there really is so much...he is a very complex intelligent individual and I want to be sure that I present him in the right light...I want to be as objective as possible...I'll figure it out and get the info up as soon as I can wrap my mind around it...as far as Flo, he talks very very highly of her...he really considers her one of his very best plants...he said his Flo mother plant is 20 years old this year...he also said if you smoke too much of her she can get racey, but you'd have to smoke quite a bit...he is all about the "head" of his strains...Flo is an active/inspirational high...that was his goal when he bred her, and he seems to think he hit his goal...I have not grown her, and to the best of my knowledge I have not smoked her either...any plant that DJ Short is willing to keep around for 20 yrs has got to be exceptional and nothing less...more to come...jay:)

Hey Jay,

This is awesome!!! Not to often does one have the opportunity to learn from one of the true cannabis breeding masters out there...not to many are willing to go public and lecture on their expertise. I am very much looking forward to more of your posts after you go. I would love to go to this but it's too far away!!!

I do have one question...If you get the chance can you ask him what the primary differences are between the original blueberry and the newer true blueberry? I am interested in more details than the typical description you find on the web.

Thanks and Cheers,

Sensi13

PS does anyone know the best place to get DJ's gear?

I already went, my friend...:D

I will do my best to communicate the experience to those of you that cannot make it, and if you wish for me to ask him anything on your behalf, I am willing to do that as well...he is a very accomodating man, very open to discussing any and all facets of the plant...if I may, I would say that DJ would say that the difference between the BB and TB is subjective...simply put, BB leans more indica and TB leans more sativa, but all are selected from the same gene pool, so you can't miss...it's about what works for you...BB may be perfect for me, TB may be perfect for you...they each possess subtle differences that make them unique in and of themselves, and unique to the individual...I kind of asked him the exact same question...I told him I could not decide which of his strains to get, but his answer was not very different from what I just told you...after about 10 seconds of thought, I knew the plant I was looking for is the Original Blueberry...I think it suites me best, as it is reminiscent of the good old days...all of his plants lean one way or the other towards the old school strains...he's moreso into effects than he is percentages, so I wouldn't pay too much attention to those...pretty much, I would say pick the strain which speaks to you and your needs...in terms of the best place to pick up his gear, that's all subjective too...if you do not live in California or Oregon, I would say seedboutique...if you do live on the West Coast, I believe his genetics will become more and more available as this revolution continues...I found Vanilluna, Blueberry, and Whitaker Blues seeds over at Purelife (dispensary), and I know where to get 4 of DJ's strains, 3 of which are cuts from DJ's actual mothers (Vanilluna, Blueberry, F13)...after meeting and listening to him, I can say his gear is worth every penny no matter where you source it from...hope all this helps...jay:)

Whitaker Blues (New!)

Developed by DJ Short's son, 'JD', the Whitaker Blues is a true Oregon
Heritage cross. The mother of the Whitaker Blues is currently referred to
as 'Quimby'; an old-school, West Coast staple cut reminiscent of a classic,
early indica lineage---strong and sleepy in it's effect.

Quimby was crossed with DJ Short's personal Blueberry father, making
the Whitaker Blues appear approx. 80% indica and 20% sativa in structure.
It is a stout plant, short branching, sporting large compact buds loaded
with resin---very vigorous and productive indoors with hues of violet and
blue at it's 55-62 day finish. Finished buds have a pungent/sweet velvety
grape and slight vanilla flavor. Effect is strong with slight initial stimulation
inspiring increased appetite (munchies) and a sedate after-effect.

I knew the plant I was looking for is the Original Blueberry...I think it suites me best

Hi all,
By in large DJ Shorts reputation rest on the lural of being the creator of Blueberry, though the Blueberry that gained such a large following and acclaimed notoriety was in fact selected, bred and marketed by the breeders of Sagarmatha and Dutch Passion seed companies. Original Blueberry. Though apparently from lines DJ is alleged to have submitted. Which is ironic considering some of the schools of thought out there on this variety of cannabis. Nirvana Seeds probably deserves an honorable mention here as well, as the Nirvana Blueberry was among the earliest hypes to appear on the forums, and the price being very attractive, surely helped in spreading the blueberry legend.

Below is a quote from DJ Short himself which explains the early origins of the Blueberry that became so famous during the '90s.

By the early 1990's I was extremely interested in the burgeoning seed market developing in Holland. I had known about the seed banks since 1983 and was always only interested in obtaining more pure, land-race varieties. Unfortunately, there were only hybrid crosses ever available at the time and I had more than enough of my own to work with. By 1993 I finally made the pilgrimage to Amsterdam where I made new connections. In 1994 I connected with the first company that I worked with in Europe. By 1995 I was supplying this company with seed-stock both for sale and for breed work. I had contracted with this company to produce Blueberry, Flo and Blue Velvet.

The first company I worked with in Europe sprouted only 25 seeds of each of these varieties to make selections from. Other than supplying seed-stock, I was only minimally involved in the selection process. I did get to see the mother and father plants alive, however, the selection process had already been done prior by others. Unfortunately, my relationship with this company was short-lived as all the owner really wanted was my seed-stock. Once he had it I became a very low priority in his scheme. In all honesty I was never paid one red cent for any of the Blueberry (or “Flow” or Blue Velvet) that company number one in Europe produced (plus having over 3,000 seeds that I produced completely ripped off).

Needless to say this lack of concern prompted me to seek other possibilities that culminated in my relationship with the second company I worked with in Europe. At this company about 50 seeds of each variety were sprouted, but I was once again mainly left out of the selection process except for sampling a number of finished products and making selections based on those (which is enough, actually). I never got to see any of the live plants from this selection process at company number two in Europe. I also contributed seed-stock for three more varieties there; Blue Moonshine, Blue Heaven and Purple Passion. The owner of this company was satisfied with paying me the minimum amount I would consider adequate. Fortunately, part of the deal was my ability to remain independent and work with whomever else I pleased.

I can remember the blueberry of the '90s well, as is probably the case with quite a few of you out there. If you were to follow the hype at certain forums today on the net, you would initially be inclined to seek DJ Shorts Blueberry out (for a hefty price at that) under the impression you were getting the same blueberry that became so famous. But that is in fact not the case, as DJ himself has admitted his lines today are from different, but related stock to the Original Blueberry of the '90s.

Naturally when one tries a variety they like, and are inclined to grow their own, acquiring the original as you know it is the direction one ultimately wants to take. Like with any purchase, cannabis seed or not, research is always required before making a committment. Because there are no refunds, and few companies operate under the umbrella of customer service Shanti does. Its small revelations like these and more that are discovered when one examines closely the hype presented, versus the reality of the market at hand.

Blue Satellite

I must admit that the bubble hash from the Blue Satellite is among the finest and most desirable product I have sampled (outside of my own) since the 1980's!

Very nice link, JessE...;)

I give credit where credit is due...since it was originally his seed stock, he gets the credit...:)

Reading through that link reminded me of something else DJ Short said...the BSatellite he loves so much is actually on the cover of his book...I know it says that the plant shown is Flo, but it is not...that BSatellite plant was harvested approximately one week after the pic was taken, and turned into hash for DJ and company...he ranks that plant as some of the very best hash he's ever had in his life...DJ Short is a BIG FAN of hashish, as you will see from my notes once they're posted...when I said I was looking for the Original Blueberry, I meant I was looking for his version of Blueberry, and not the plants that were selected from such small populations...rest assured, his Blueberry is superior...unfortunately Short and Shantibaba share much in common when it comes to being ripped off...that too is something I was fortunate enough to discuss with him...the similarities between him and Shanti are ridiculous...first Sag took his stock without his input, then Dutch Passion eventually screwed him, and then things didn't work out with Spice of Life...either way, the Blue lines all originated from DJ Short, which is the only place I would ever source my Blueberry...you cannot compare a plant selected from such small populations with plants selected from hundreds of specimens...as good as I remember Blueberry, I expect his to not only repeat the experience, but actually surpass it...I have no doubt in his abilities...I am eager to see plants from seeds from the original breeder...who knows... perhaps DJ Short will join our beloved forum and tell us more...jay:D

EDIT: It is not labeled 'Flo', but 'Heirloom Blueberry'...honest mistake, people...:o

Good to hear from you Jay,
The DJ Short Blueberry and True Blueberry sales of today obviously owe credence to the success Blueberry received in the '90s. However rarely does one hear about Dutch Passion and Sagarmatha's role in the development of the line, which was instrumental in the strains success, facts which many who are so passionate about the Blueberry line would find of interest when considering their options in the blue family.

The original hype on the forums was Nirvana Blueberry. A variety which was available cheaply, $15, and which was marketed heavily by the powers that be at Overgrow.com many years ago. It was the first hype to get real push, next came Trainwreck, OG and Bubba Kush etc. Its these three companies who originally offered Blueberry, in the case of Nirvana perhaps on a grand scale, that helped cement the blueberry legend. I believe its a mistake to assume DJ's version is the superior version, as that would seem to indicate its the original version which enjoyed so much success. Because as we've seen its a little more complicated than what initially meets the eye.
