3 x Mango Haze 1000W Vertical RDWC Grow

Hi all,

I popped 6 Mango Haze seeds in 3 different occasions and ended up with only 3 seedlings. From these 6 seeds, 5 germinated, 3 are females, 2 died because they couldn't get rid of the shell and I did not helped them either, and one never germinated because the shell cracked before I put in in the cube. I'm working slowly because of local regulations and me not being in a hurry, this is my hobby.

It is interesting to note that I tried to match environmental factors to increase the female/male ratio and apparently it worked, or I might be lucky that 3 out of 3 are females. I used a higher content (compared to other elements) of Nitrogen in my reservoir, 18/6h photo-period, 1000W Metal Halide 4000K, 60% Relative Humidity, and temperatures ~25C. I wonder if using a 7000K or 10000K MH Lamp would help even more with the female/male ratio.

I'm currently at Day 0 of 12/12 photoperiod, and plants are at +/- Day 36 from seed. I'm attaching some pictures of my follow up. I will try to post weekly pictures of the grow.

Please let me know what you think and don't hesitate to ask any questions.

I forgot to mention, I took 4 clones of each before flipping the switch.

I just started the WAITING GAME! lol

You're increasing the odds of getting females with the environmental factors you mention, I believe.

3/3 is pretty good in any case :D.

I get around 6/10 female on average I think. Isn't it strange that expression of sex is not set until after germination? Blows my mind.

Bonne chance with the MH's, well worth a go IMO.

First time I tried it, I did it in soil using bagseed with a 6500K CFL, and increased nitrogen, that time there was also an increase in the female/male ratio. That is why I went for it again with the Mango Haze.

The most interesting thing I want to try is not only to control sex through environmental factors but also phenotype expressions. I have read in different threads the same information presented by DJ Short stating that one can control sativa/indica expressions in hybrids through environmental factors. Since I live close to the equator, in a mild tropical environment, I would like to try and bring the next MH seedlings to show more sativa expressions by exposing them to outdoor conditions but allow them to stay in vegetative state so as to take clones before flowering.

I would also like to grow them outdoors but I can't find a suitable spot at the moment.

Update - Week 1 Pictures

Two clones are showing roots already @ day 7, clones are from MH#2 and MH#3. I guess those two might be my temporary moms. Waiting on a mom from MH#1.

I had 2 issues this week with the transplant of the plants to the new system I built, so all plants are showing stress and slow growth. I guess because of the stress, plants haven't had a chance to stretch much this week. Issues were mainly with the roots. However, plants are recovering fast and creating new roots, I hope growth this week is going to be insane.

None of them have shown alternating nodes, but all 3 have shown pistils. Next seedplants I will leave them vegetative until they present alternating nodes in order to research more into my doubts as stated in my "Sexual Maturity" thread.

Actually 5 clones are showing roots, 3 x MH#3, 2 x MH#2. 1 of MH#2 is going into an empty slot I have in the system.

MH#3 and MH#2 show more vigor, but MH#2 structure looks sativa, that is why I went for a second MH#2 plant. Either way I will try to run each pheno at least twice.

Hi X,
Looking good in here, Mango Haze is a line which I believe a lot of potential rests. It may be the true Holy Grail though Super Silver Haze is something one will find hard to beat seed for seed, plant for plant in my opinion as well. They may be two of the finest bred varieties in the world, easily among the best lines from seed in the industry today in their own right.

Not all Mango Haze plants are created equal though, selection is required and there will be some plants that you will just fall in love with. I see that you are planning on taking clones, wise decision, just make sure to tag and label them properly according to donor plants.

Sometimes shells can be difficult to fully shed and they will require assistance in order to ensure you do not lose the seedling altogether. I have found you have to gauge each case on a seedling by seedling basis, as not all situations are identical though the problem is usually the same. Sometimes I will gently squeeze the shell with my finger tips, attempting to break the lining of the shell case in order to remove it from the cotyledons underneath. Other times I may elect to use tweezers, in both cases I will usually attempt to very, very gently keep the plant in a s.e/south west hemisphere of sorts simply to avoid jerking them out of my medium, whether it be rockwool or soil.

These varieties are highly prized and each seed counts for its weight in gold, so I have found it in my best interest to attempt to make sure each one see's the light of day as it could be the prized plant that you're looking for.

This is a more sativa dominant 50% haze line, so depending on your part of the world outdoors may not be a viable option to flower to completion without a green house. However make no mistake about it, you're dealing with one of the finest strains to come out of any camp in the industry today. Treat her well, she's a sweet heart. :)

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for the info. MNS has some great seeds definitely, you can see it in the plant's vigor. I'm eager to smoke Mango Haze, since SSH is one of my favorite smokes while I was in Amsterdam.

Mango Haze should grow outdoors without any problems, I live in the tropics (lat 7deg). Day length varies from 11.5h to 12.5h throughout the year. What I'm actually wondering is not only the spot but the best way to keep it vegging for a long time, I bet I could grow a huge tree in this area. However, right now is rain season and it is raining non-stop, I have to wait until it stops because even in the dry season it rains quite often.

I wanted to note that all 3 plants seem like they are producing trichomes in the smaller leaves, and there is assymetry in some of the plant's nodes as well I just didn't noticed it until now.

Hi X,
Well you can go about this in a variety of ways, all pretty much centered around 18 hours of light or more a day to keep it in a vegetative state. You can keep it in a closet set up for the vegetative cycle, a spare room, attic, basement etc. I would likely consider just putting them in a large pot with a nice loose soil mix personally.

If that is not an option you could consider an outdoor security HPS in order to supplement the day light if you can time it correctly. Let us know what you come up with, sounds interesting.

USA Here

I just went to order some Mango after much research and was denied because of my location. I need to find a reliable seed bank that carries these that will ship to the USA.

Hi Guiness,
It sounds like you've did your research mate as if anyone looks into the strains before they make a purchase, which is a very wise decision, they will find that Mango Haze and Super Silver Haze are without question varieties everybody wants in their garden at some point in their growing career.

I recommend sending Shantibaba a message privately and seeing if he cant point you in the right direction.

Thanks Jess,

I am new here, been banned from sites (not for anything to do with seeds, mostly by big mouth or something), but I didn't want to do anything inappropriate. You can tell I have been looking for a Haze that I can manage. It will be all head stash for me as I do not do anything illegal commercially.

Thanks

All female?

Cool thread.
I always wondered if environment had all that much to do with a seedling turning out male or female.

You said you wondered if you raised the kelvin if you would end up with more female. T5 or even cfls are common at 6500k and the T5's can put out 40,000lumens using the 8 bulb 4 foot ones.

I have only used T5 or cfl for veg and I seem to have a very high female to male ratio, so maybe you’re on to something?

So with perfect conditions and the right spectrum lights are you thinking it's possible to get close to all female? I am a newbie to this forum (the only one I use) but have been growing for quite sometime. Until the last few years it was always a seed here or there from some kill, and they would always turn female. Now as I have learned it was most likely because it popped a naner late in flower making it feminized. (I thought I was just the world best grower, or luckiest)
So in cannabis the stronger of the 2 sexes are female? or weakest because they need better conditions to survive?
How about the seed stock? If the seeds were harvested early or the plant that made the seed was stressed, would this have an effect on the male/female ratio?
I have always wondered about how sex was determined.
Maybe someone knows the answer, or it was just luck?
Peace,
Toasty

Hey Toasty,

First time I read about controlling environmental factors to increase female/male ratio was in Jorge Cervante's MJ Bible, and later I found the same information in different websites.

As I mentioned before, it is also interesting to note that DJ Short states that one can also help hybrids to express indica or sativa traits through environmental controls (light schedule, temperature, humidity, etc). That is what I would like to try next, and try to get more sativa traits in my MH.

Update - Week 2 Pictures

I think I might be actually starting Week 1. I'm seeing alternating nodes and more pistils. There is also more vigor, but I might be only seeing the signs of recovery (they lost some roots during transplant). The new clone (MH#2.1) tripled in size (maybe 4x) in a week, and I set it in the system measuring only ~ 2in. Just the clone shows how much vigor there is in these plants.

MH#2 shows some nitrogen clawing. This is bad for the plant but a good sign that this is the most sativa out of the three. All three plants present about the same vigor and size. I guess I don't have much to research anymore, but wait to compare yield and smoke reports from both runs (seedplant and clones) in order to be able to select my first mom out of this batch.

Update - Week 3 Pictures

It is actually Week 1 of flowering. It is interesting to note that sexual maturity was reached at week 8/9, I had a hiccup during transplant but it shouldn't have affected the time to reach maturity. Plants show a lot of vigor, specially MH#3 and MH#1. The vigor amazes me since this is my first RDWC system, which I built and designed from scratch and I have not dialed it in yet, and I just replaced my HPS bulb which was dying. I hope to see lots of more improvement this week. I love the vertical setup because I know these plants will reach the ceiling (6.5ft) anytime soon, they are halfway in their first week of flower (~3-4ft)

Now that the plants started flowering it can be seen that actually MH#1 seems the most sativa out of the 3, it presents long skinny fingered leaves, long internodal space, longer maturity, etc. MH#1 smells sweet and delicious, however I can't determine exactly the smell. I hope I get some nice smoke from this plant.

MH#2 hasn't recovered completely but it is flowering fast. Since it seems it won't recover completely I will start evaluating the new clone MH#2.1, which shows lots of vigor and is healthy. MH#2 has also a sweet aroma but there is also a hint of skunk.

MH#3 presents the most vigor out of the three plants, but I think it suffered less during transplant as well. MH#3 has a more skunky aroma. I was checking the bucket and the plant hit the tent and it smell like something was rotten, I actually got worried and started smelling everything in the bucket and it was the plant releasing the smell while it hit the walls of the tent accidentally. I grew some lemon skunk and it never smelled like this, not even at harvest. Also, MH#3 is the only plant that did not loose branches or leaves during transplant, so it should represent plants structure more accurately. It seems MH#3 has a "menorah" shape, however I have to wait a little longer to actually determine plant structure. I hope MH#3 is like cannatari's potzilla.

I think I have a lot of variety in the characteristics of these 3 plants. So it is true that at the end it is a matter of selecting the right plant, since MH is such an excellent line it seems hard not to find a keeper.
