Joe Pietri told me that the BOEL put a load of money into setting up a big pot farm in Hawaii and that is true, they did, easy to check that fact. The BOEL went all over the world as surfers in the early days and they collected seeds from all over the place, not just the obvious places like the Pacific Coast of Mexico (great surf, Acapulco Gold and Oaxacan Gold in the south, Michoacan in the central part, Sonoran and Chihuahan in the north) and Thailand but places like Indonesia, South Africa, The Carribean, South America, if there was great surf, they went there and back then those places all had great weed.
Later on the BOEL sent people to Afghanistan to setup contacts to deal hash with, I'm pretty sure Jerry Biesler was involved with them as he lived in Afghanistan in the 60s. Sam wrote he was in Kabul in 1971, I think that was right around when Jerry left to go back to Cali, it's all in Jerry's book but I forget the dates now. Joe Pietri told me there was a group of British guys running a large legal farm in Afghanistan in the 60s and early 70s producing cannabis for pharmaceutical companies and the BOEL met them and obtained indica seeds with them. Joe told me they exchanged Haze seeds for Afghan seeds but I don't know if that is true, it could well be, at the very least I expect the BOEL exchanged seeds with those guys, whether they had any Haze or if Haze even existed then I don't know but I suspect it did.
As I've mentioned before, Joe Pietri also told me the BOEL grew Haze in Hawaii and shipped it to Cali in packages with dragon logos on, Zamalito says the same thing and posted that dragon picture I posted here. I have never verified this, there must be people around who would know if this is true or not.
If it is true, what was in those packages? I expect it was a mix of different stuff, all kinds of sativas, Mexicans, Colombians, Thais, maybe Africans, Indonesians, Burmese, Indians, could be anything given how far and wide the BOEL travelled. That would mean that Haze was never a strain as such, more a smorgasbord of top quality sativas. Joe Pietri said those shipments were usually sensimilla and there was sometimes one or two seeds in a package but most were seedless. Those BOEL imports were the highest priced best quality weed around at the time so you can safely assume any seeds that were found were grown out, all those hippies in the communes who pioneered the modern cannabis breeding scene would have been keen to grow the best seeds that they could find so I think it's pretty much a certainty that whetever came from Hawaii with a dragon on it had a input into the Cali scene in the 60s.
Of course, someone needs to find out more about what really did happen in the 60s, to verify or dispute some of these tales and it needs to be done now because it was half a century ago and the people who were around to know what happened are dying off now.
