Fem seeds and there impact on the future of the species known as cannabis.

G'day hempy, if we believe in evolution then all cannabis genetics today are likely descended from one original mutant plant thousands of years ago that was the first ever cannabis plant and the first ever strain of cannabis.

That premise sounds about as rational as Adam Eve. All I can say is, that original plant must have been a hermaphrodite.

Call me od call me crazy but i my self belive the cannabis plant was a gift from god.

That's incredibly weak evidence to support your argument Namaskar... in fact I don't even see anything other than speculation, which I should perhaps remind you is not evidence?

It also does NOT counter the FACT that cannabinoid ratios are determined by genetic factors, NOT environmental ones.

http://www.genetics.org/cgi/content/short/163/1/335

Eitherway that is not the topic of this thread.

Well Chimera i was not talking on behalf of speculation, but practical experiments with plasma light which were done earlier this year and still continue.I agreed with you that certain alleles are responsible for certain cannabinoids, but i don't agree with you that certain environmental factors don't have any influence on the potency cq cannabinoid profile.

This will not say that a Cannabis variety with only a Bd/allele will produce a content of THC > 1.

The UV-index in Oaxaca 1.00 pm in the summer is appr. 16, while in Holland you may be lucky with an UV-index of 7, so there is a big difference. You will see a difference when a variety is grown in both environments with a Bt/Bd allele.

the UVB intensities we need to emulate sunlight

140mw/cm2 - UVB at sea level in California
250mw/cm2 - UVB at sea level at equator
375mw/cm2 - UVB at high altitude such as Himalayas, Kilimanjaro etc

compounds in plants

Although this is not the topic of this thread.Environmental factors can have also influences on the fem/male (70-80%fem/20-30%male) ratio of Cannabis.I've seen it this year with use of seawater extract

Namaste :)

hi all

cannabinoid levels and ratios are influenced by genotype and environment (as usual, in fact).

Genotype (IMO it is the most important aspect)

- the presence or absence of the allele coding for the enzyme that synthetise THC (Bt) is a major aspect for THC concentration. Of course if the plant is homozygote Bd/Bd no THC will be produced.

-The transcription and traduction (the two steps to produce the enzyme from the gene) levels of the gene is also a major aspect.

Some Bt alleles may have a very poor transcription and traduction level (depend on various sequences of the gene) resulting in plants Bt/Bt with very low levels of THC (because very few enzymes).

And some Bd alleles may have very high levels of transcription and traduction. Plants Bt/Bd may have unbalanced ratios because of that (Bd enzyme in a bigger quantity than Bt enzyme).

- The efficiency of the enzyme is also a major aspect and depends on the sequence of the gene. It is expressed as the quantity of product synthetised per second or minutes.

-The level of the various cannabinoids also depends on the amount of precursor products available to the enzyme. For exemple if the enzyme producing olivetolic acid is not working, the Bt enzyme (even if very effective) will lack one of its substrat to produce THCA.

therefore, at the genotypical level, the quantity and ratio of any specific cannabinoid is influenced by the effectivity and amount of enzyme producing this specific cannabinoid but also the effectivity and amout of enzymes producing every components of the biochemical pathway.

Environment

quantity of light
type of wavelength
heat
etc....

cheers

What tests are you using to confirm the increase in CBD/THC ratios you claim? THC fixed plants wont show significant levels of CBD... which was the claim being made. A geographical change in location will not show this result... this claim has been proven false.

These 70-80-% female ratios mean ZERO to me... it amounts to nothing but stoner musings which are not scientifically significant. How many plants were run? What statisitical tests are you using to confirm your results as anything other than random? Are you using molecular techniques to determine sex?

I'm sorry but I'm a trained statistician and these claims of higher percentage of females are nonsense. I've run 'THOUSANDS of individuals in my tests, determined sex via the presence or absence of MADC in males. I've run proper statistical tests significant @ P < 0.001. The results are clear- males and females show in a 1:1 ratio given enough individuals are grown- any deviation you are seeing is attributable to sampling error.

Please prove otherwise; show your work. Anything less amounts to stoner musings... which are in no shortage on this little thing we call the internet.

Well Said..

Hey all!,
Edit- I have 7 not 8 males. Oops. Like Chim said though from such a low selection nothing is proven. But over years and years these are the ratios I have seen time and time again.

Just popped 18 shits. Have 8 males. I too have popped thousands of seeds. I feel they are easily manipulated much like alligators nest temperatures being the single biggest factor for sex determination, cannabis too is influenced in this manner.

Perhaps the alleles of other genes are influenced by the environment which then causes the sexual phenotype expressed to be different than the sexual genotype held?

From my experience, the biggest influential factor of resin production is humidity. This was one of the first errors I saw in RC Clarkes book. He connected high resin with high altitudes which had more UV exposure. He rushed to his conclusion here IMO.

I have noticed most mountainous regions I have lived in had low humidity. My outdoor and indoor BOTH exhibited more frostiness when living in these low humidity regions. My indoor had NO more UV just lower humidity.

IMO resin creates a barrier around the tissues that "sweat" less efficently than the fan leaves. This barrier reduces the rate of transpiration by creating a barrier between the stoma and the low humidity environment.

Just Some Observations,

Or perhaps you don't know what you're talking about and the talk of male markers is simply over your head?

IME anecdotal evidence is worth jack shit but you might not understand that joke.

Do you think that's why the high altitude roses have so many more trichomes as well? ;)

It's kind of sad how your observations are such old antiquated hearsay. Thanks for the fallacies Kyle.

Nevil-

Why do you avoid my questions? Maybe there's a bit of Sam Skunkman in you too?

Green, are you above or below the 25 - 30 mark?

Don't wanna know exactly, just curious. You have an aggressive way of debating. How long have you been growing herb? Have you done any multi-generation large scale controlled tests and/or breeding?

If you have covered it, please direct me to it. I see most others in the debates resume. After all, seeing peoples work helps to putting a worth on their arguments.

Which questions are you directing at me? I believe that I have given my opinions regarding intersex / hermie traits as well as why I believe that it is possible to influence seedling sex in some instances.
What I have noticed is that the tone of the thread is once again becoming less civil. I can respond to this in a number of ways, the simplest being to get out if the way of flying shit or lean on the Mod button (something that I am loath to do).
I'm happy to oblige you as long as we treat each other with respect. What's your question?

Not really sure if I saw what you disagree with GitT?

You are proficient at quoting however.

Maybe you should make some observations of your OWN then bring them back to add to the discussion at a later date?

Regarding MADC markers. Perhaps the alleles of other genes are influenced by the environment which then causes the sexual phenotype expressed to be different than the sexual genotype held?

Perhaps This Is Over My Head But I Will Attempt To Contribute Anyway,

Crickey, i think for this thread i'll just skip pages 3-18, not that awake yet.

Personally i find no issue with fem seeds, they are just great for anyone without the space/time to be soerting out males and females, so if i just need a space to fill i can just throw a seed in. I honestly can't complain.

As to the arguiment of it driving out the good genetics and weening down the gene pool and all that lot, well the attitude customer base, and most other seedbanks, well they are used by kids, small sale hobyists like me or just the bang for buck commecrcial chap. There are still plentyyyyy of people out there who retain old school genetics and are constantly working at getting true strains out there i regula form. I think it's a touch silly to assume that these guys have just given up with rela cannabis. The market being as it is (profit!) might mean it's harder to locate these genetics, but i've noticed that there are a lot of low scale forum based seed co-op type places around with some really good lines you don't generally see on the high output banks.

So no one is going to pop seeds and show me the 70% female ratio?

Sensi Seed's NL#5Hz from the early to mid 90's consistently exibited a higher ratio of females than males. Back then, it was a well known fact among growers that about 80% were females.
Unfortunately I do not have any of those seeds left today to show that to you, but I am sure others who have grown this strain will remember this particularity.
I cannot really explain it, maybe it had to do with NL#5 being a true female and Haze a variety particularly not prone to hermaphrodism.
Surely Nevil has an idea...

Peace.

Hi All

Listen to this carefully as I will put a stop to this thread further if people cannot talk to each other . We are all adults here and choose to be here to help and discuss.Nevil is also being gracious with his time as too myself with helping sort out many people and many questions. We do this because we care. If those who are loosing their cool on this thread cannot discuss things properly and cite references to back up their case rather than give opinions, then cease to contribute on this thread as it is no longer needed.

People who are civil to others will survive at MNS forum, others will be asked to leave. We have never needed to do this as yet but it is now on the cards. So this is a finally warning, please do not think we take sides, we do not , we just do not need members who are not courteous and respect differences of opinion.

Thank you for the understanding now discuss or leave would be my advice....Sb

I'm curious what your thoughts are on this one Nevil.

Can you answer my questions to you please? You want others to answer your questions, please answer mine.

It will only add credibility if you can. If not, it takes you out of the debate.

Thanks,
R

Ideas make debate squidbilly, no reason to make this an a posteriori/a priori issue.

But if you must know I run a 15,000 sq ft legal warehouse grow. Currently setting up 6 24kw flower rooms. What are you doing besides ignoring evidence and derailing threads?

Derail away TROLL!!

Grower for 8 years, used to work in a psychopharmacology lab, have published research in peer reviewed scientific journals. We actually had a schedule 1 DEA license because we were working on some artificial cannabinoids.

I really don't think this is on topic cartoon man ;)
