Interview with the Joint Doctor

At what age did you start using cannabis? How long after that did you start growing your own supply?

The funny thing is, I already knew a bit about growing long before I started smoking. As a teen, I remember tending to my father’s weed patch as part of my daily chores, and I certainly didn’t mind, as I found it rewarding to see them grow. My Dad – at the time, a breeder in his own right – never told me any B.S. about marijuana, warning that the worst danger about “grass” was the law. He wanted me to grow up with a healthy relationship with the plant, telling me that if I ever wanted to try cannabis, when I was ready, he wanted us to share my first joint. And that’s how it happened. I was 17 the first time we puffed up. I started growing my own around the same time, and found it quite easy. Living in the country certainly didn’t hurt, since there were plenty of spots to hide plants nearby.

Initially, I grew simply to provide myself with good weekend stash. During the summer, I began to smoke weed daily with my fellow farm-hands. Being high made the most tedious field jobs seem much more tolerable, even enjoyable. I only started growing a small number of plants, but I had some real beginner’s luck. The quality of my first homegrown stash was excellent, as we had some great outdoor strains back then, a bit of a rarity at the time. That year I started to show up in town on the week-ends with the craziest weed any of my school buddies had ever tried.

Do you prefer growing indoors or out? Bio or Hydro?

I have no special preference for either one, although I have more experience with outdoor cultivation. That is to say, they both have their pros and cons. For me, the ideal situation for growing would be in a greenhouse, where you could get the best of both worlds. I certainly prefer working with natural, living soils and fresh, black compost that can sustain healthy biological activity and natural predators. When you start organic from the get-go, you don’t really want to go back. That being said, I am amazed by what some people can achieve with hydroponics.

Apart from Lowryder what other strains do you enjoy growing?

I like tasty strains and unusual plants. I love trying out new flavors and exotic types. But the strains I grow – or that I have grown in the past – are usually a function of environmental conditions and other constraints. It depends whether I’m setting up a small indoor grow, planting an outdoor crop, or embarking on a new breeding project. I like many different types of cannabis, ranging from old-school indicas to early-flowering sativas, to exotic landraces. Some of my favorites include William’s Wonder; Mazar-i-Sharif, Big Bud, Haze/NL, and a few other lesser-known brands, many of which have become hard or impossible to find. Of course, I still have limited resources, and in past years I devoted much of my attention to growing and improving my automatic flowering variety, Lowryder. Unfortunately, because of the legal status of cannabis nowadays, I find it difficult to continue growing without unacceptable personal risk. In an attempt to legitimize my operation, it has become necessary to enlist producer(s) who are in a more tolerant environment or country, or who actually hold some kind of growing license.

Creation of Lowryder

Were you aware that cannabis plants could auto-flower before you saw it for yourself? Did you have the idea of Lowryder before you had the genetics to make the strain possible?

Yes, although I didn’t know how this “autoflowering” mechanism worked, genetically speaking. I had heard of ruderalis, and have seen many small-sized plants growing in the wild. Years ago I started trying out short strains like Mighty Mite – I found it all pretty intriguing. I had little doubt that fully automatic plants could be created. Back then, I even came out with my own short strain, unrelated to Lowryder, that I called 6-Way – but it was never commercialized, though I did try and sell some seeds to a certain Canadian seed magnate, to no avail. I also experimented with growing methods that could produce bonsai-like plants, such as delayed planting, growing in small pots and other types of stresses.

How and where did you acquire the auto-flowering genetics?

Many years ago I started trading seed with a new acquaintance, Antonio, who is now sadly passed on. A spry, dreadlocked Mexico expatriate, Antonio had been collecting and growing unusual strains for 30-plus years. We met through mutual acquaintances and became great friends, though he was old enough to be my dad. I learnt a great deal through him, and we shared a passion for collecting rare plants; from blue potatoes to poppies and hemp. Getting to the point, one of the types of cannabis seed I acquired from Antonio was called “Mexican Rudy,” a strain which stayed short and flowered earlier than anything else we had. I didn’t know too much about it. At first the name seemed contradictory: “Rudy” almost certainly stood for ruderalis, a mythical, rare subspecies of wild cannabis from Siberia which has a short growth habit and quick life cycle; but I failed to see the link with Mexico, though it was the country of Antonio’s origin. Was this simply an unrelated ruderalis-like plant from Mexico, or did it have a link to the real thing? Although no-one can be sure until some type of genetic fingerprinting is done, I now believe that the Mexican Rudy was actually an experimental cross of Russian ruderalis and Mexican cannabis, made sometime in the 1970s, possibly at the U. of Mississippi in the U.S. I found obscure references to this very cross in scientific literature circa 1978. In any case, the strain was kept and grown out in Canada for several years before it got to me. The Rudy was indeed a short, quick-flowering strain, with medium potency. To improve its taste, strength, and just to experiment a little, I crossed it first with a Northern Lights #2 female, then a William’s Wonder clone. Out of the second generation of hybrids, a selection of extremely short and quick plants, flowering immediately under 24 hours of daylight, were selected for further multiplication. All the subsequent generations retained this “autoflowering” characteristic. The hybrid, dubbed simply Willy’s Automatic at first, became the basis for Lowryder. I grew the variety out on a small scale, selecting the best specimens for another five or six generations before it became commercialized. Unfortunately, Antonio passed away before Lowryder’s commercial potential was realized. That’s the toughest part for me: I will never be able to properly thank him. At least, we can talk about him now and acknowledge his contribution with no fear of getting him in trouble. Bless you Antonio.

Strain’s Characteristics

What do you think is a realistic outdoor yield for the Original Lowryder?

Outdoors, you can get between 3-7 grams per plant. Indoors, you can double that amount with good lighting. And hydroponics growers can often achieve one ounce on a good plant. However, some plants typically remain smaller – with Original Lowryder (#1), once in a while you get a much smaller plant (the “micro” phenotype, as Lowryder growers have dubbed it). We haven’t had as many grow reports with Lowryder #2, but this new version should yield slightly more, as it has more prolific budding. The quality of the smoke is much improved.

Future

Lowryder makes home breeding projects both easier and quicker, how do you think this will affect your business? And the cannabis seed market in general?
Lowryder is changing the seed industry. It makes it extremely easy to grow a few easily concealed plants, a fact that has opened up the market to just about anyone with a healthy curiosity and a desire to grow a little homegrown. It is an ideal plant for beginners to try, as one needs no special knowledge about light cycles and such. It can be grown in a backyard garden, patio, or closet, and harvested when ready, just like a radish!

Autoflowering plants including Lowryder are leading to a significant increase in the home breeding and clandestine seed trading phenomenon. As it is very easy to produce one’s own Lowryder seed, many people from around the globe are trying growing for the very first time with success, often crossing Lowryder with local varieties to experiment and come up with their own version. This phenomenon can be observed on my website, where growers are invited to sign up and share their experiences. I struggle to keep up with all the new developments. I am really heartened by all the breeding and experimentation being done with my varieties. When a plant takes on a life of its own in this way, it’s got to be a good one! The whole thing is evolving as we speak. Now, as a seed provider and breeder, you might think that I am losing business to this whole clandestine seed sector. But in fact, more new growers are attracted to Lowryder every day because of its ease to grow, through word-of-mouth. Most gardeners like to start with original seeds, so there will continue to be a health market for original Lowryder seeds for years to come. A key to this is keeping the seed prices affordable, so real Lowryder continues to be accessible to new growers, and also to discourage knock-offs.

The average person buying cannabis seeds in a hemp store or ordering a pack over the Internet is typically an amateur grower. Commercial or experienced growers often already have their own clones or seeds, and are not as preoccupied about trying new varieties, preferring to stick to a proven one. The small-time home grower, medical user or hobby gardener is more likely to experiment with new and different strains. So while Lowryder may never be espoused by commercial growers, it has been a great entry-level purchase for countless ordinary people of all ages, who don’t want to grow a ridiculously huge crop or take unnecessary risks. For this reason, shop owners have told me that Lowryder actually attracts new business, for example, the type of person who may not have tried growing before, and this has helped secure a permanent place for Lowryder in seed-selling shops and websites.

My Truth

before i found Mr nice.. i bought into the hype of lowryder diesel....to the tune of 400$us....to say i was unimpressed is not honest....it was garbage...not only was it not up to par...i would have to say it was the best looking mexi brick...with a fruity ordinary mexi brick high...Just my Truth....

400$us lol raydiator someone Love's you. got some hemp seeds here from the fishing shop if you wont to buy them raydiator:D. i some time's get seeds from a pick and mix site but normally get full packs apart from the od auto seed to make the order up for free post. i was a bit juviuse at first getting single seed's but after ordering a few for free postage. i made a order last year for 38 different pick and mix strains in pack's of 4 for regular and 2 if fem for the greenhouse. all turned out to be what was on the packet till thief's got most but left a few. only because i think there was to much for them to take. anyway i think lowrider are a good little gimmick but well if you wont to grow them its best to only get a few seeds and make your own from them like the joint doctor him self says. sorry you fell for the the gimmick mate. i have only grow 2 auto strains they cost me about £30uk. i found them great little thing's for chucking in the mother room but i wouldn't dream of filling a grow room with auto's. but the first one i grow cost me about £5 for 1 fem seed cost nothing in light because it was light going to waist and yield was about 3/4 oz dry for £5 cost. bargain when you look at it that way but wouldn't ever waist a full room on them.

I don't have any interest in auto strains, but I do wonder what would happen if you crossed a 24wk haze with ruderalis.

Guys, by posting this interview I did not mean to convince people to grow autos (especially on mrnice board where most people are experienced growers) I just find it interesting from the breading perspective. Also, growing autos does not require much experience, they can be grown virtually anywhere and might be a good fit for people with minimal space or stealth requirements (indoor and outdoor). If it is for you or not is a personal choice based on your individual situation. That’s all.

One more of my rules ... Never grow or deal with Ruderalis.

No matter what ppl say, ruderalis is not good class/species of cannabis
and must be improved with sativa or indica, usually it's hybrid.

All about ruderalis & autoflowering is part of the world where you living.
Its a question do you improving sativa or you improving ruderalis with
crossing it ?

ive run autos before...
waste of time...
i could get a rooted clone put it in flower for 2 months(same as most autos) and at the end come harvest time I bet for the most part the rooted clone will far outshine and outyield the autos.

blizz brings up a good rule of thumb, one Ive stuck to ever since witnessing for my own eyes the uselessness of having ruderalis in a line.
these days if I even see ruderalis when lookin at seeds lineage I will move on to the next product in a heart beat.

but i do understand you posting this so we can have it here in our database of information:)...

take it easy everyone.

What a great read.

I don't see anything wrong with Ruderalis genes. Some of the newer versions are fairly potent and they are great for veg rooms/boxes or growing outdoors all year long.

i am using auto plants as a early outdoor plant. i would agree that there no good to do a full crop indoor as sead you might aswell just use normal plant. it can be a god send on these days you got no weed and your crops got weeks left. a few auto's planted out only grow low so hiding them is easy and there ready in 10 weeks. you might only get about 1oz dry but its a oz months early. and some of the newer auto aren't the best smoke in the world but there better than some.

Has anyone crossed a long flowering sativa with ruderalis?

Maybe a 75/25 mix just to cut down on stretch and flowering time?

Is there any special way how, in crossing, just to take size and flowering like inheritable elements without other characteristics like potency, smell, vigour etc etc ?

Is there any special way how, in crossing, just to take size and flowering like inheritable elements without other characteristics like potency, smell, vigour etc etc ?

there just the same as all plant to cross only thing with crossing them with other strains is they don't always auto flower.

Talking about Ruderalis crosses, but meaning at only autoflowering gens and do not taking other characteristics what must be included in filial (like body structure, body size, buds formation, possible yield, color, odor, taste, potency, "body or head effect" and more and more characteristics ... ) brings weird picture to from ruderalis crosses only inheritable genetics are flowering time and plant size.

Whats will happend, for real, with some of great sativas (cause no reason to use bad sativa in breeding) ?

Just curious is ruderalis known by awesome yielding or extraordinary potency or amazing smell or or or .... what is with these characteristics if you just cross sativa x ruderalis ?

How is possible to nothing from that "improved" sativa wasnt changed except flowering time and body size ?
Whats purpose of crossing some of great sativas with ruderalis instead indica ?

as you know most gens can be isolated with modern breeding techniques. what your wanting if i am right is say a long flowering haze that auto flowers? could it be done don't see why not. i seen a auto haze in the auto section attitude seeds yesterday so looks like someones thinking the same. i bet its not as good as a good haze though. i think it could be done but would take a lot of work because i don't think you could do it making f1's. i think you would first have to make a ibl from a auto haze to inbreed the auto gen. like i sead not all cross will auto so it will have to be inbreed into the ibl. with the ibl then cross back to the haze parent used and inbreed the auto gen again. till it had the haze side you wont. making it a lot of time breeding to get the standard i think you want even with autos. never tried so just going of what i know from making f1's from auto and auto cross. some auto cross can be good plants though the autos not as good as none autos but better than the auto parent in most cases. u planing on being the first person to make a auto haze that takes 15 weeks but can flower outdoor anywhere? it would be nice but you couldn't say fast and that's what attracts people to auto strains at the minute. but yes i think it can be done. but not to make a fully formed sativa plant only a sativa dwarf bigger than most auto though and stronger.

Im not sure what is modern breeding ?
Here is just about two characteristics, flowering time and size.
Im curious how is possible to someone can isolate two gens, can you share that info with me ?

I dont get you about autoflowering haze of 15 weeks in flowering ?
Who need it ? Whats purpose of it ?

Keep Haze on 24/0, transplanted outside in June it will start flowering !
For something like that its useless using Ruderalis and change many Haze characteristics. At least we grow Haze cause Haze characteristics, if its changed with Ruderalis what is purpose of growing that "Haze" ?
_____________________________________-
I know what you mean by IBL, but do you know how many plants its needed to start to find one who have 90%haze sides and its autoflowering ?
How much failed crosses its needed to find similar male parent for it ?
Even that, its impossible to isolate just autoflowering gen but implemented in Haze .... simple impossible.

haze x ruderalis

Of course it would take some inbreeding with ruderalis that had dominant genes in structure/flower time, but non-dominant in the stone. I don't plan on trying it, have too many things going on, but it would be interesting to see the results.

modern breeding i would put under the newer breeding techniques like plant tissue culture ect. here is a link to lemarcel's thread in it he talks about protoplasts. http://www.mrnice.nl/forum/showthread.php?t=3664 not to get into to much detail but you can take any gen from a plant like the auto gen and put only that gen into a different plant like haze. so what you get is a pure haze that auto's. try a google search on them mate. but not a easy task and not really for hobby growers. though it could be done in practical by anyone. so you see you could get a 100% haze auto. with only the auto gen from the auto plant. but it would take a lot of work not something i would like to take on as it would be very expensive and time consuming just to isolate the auto gen. how Meany 100% hazes have you grow? there not really common most hazes are a cross. the benefit would be for people that only grow outside in a northern latitude where they cant grow a haze outdoor. 15 weeks was just a averaged if you grow autos you would no they don't start flowering for 2 or 3 weeks then a 12 flowering for a good haze that's where the 15 week flowering auto haze come from. because i don't think you could make a haze flower fast and still have a good haze taste and high. so what your saying has no use could be very useful to some people. one man junk is another man gold mate. would i like to grow a good auto haze outdoor uk yes. could i be bothered to breed one no. there would be to much work involved for a small hobby grower like me to do a serious breeding project on it. unless i use normal breeding and done it as side breeding project. that would take to long imoa with a lot of waist plants using space up because i couldn't use the none auto and wouldn't know till they started autoing which to cull so would have a lot of plants to cull which i don't have the space for. hope the info i give is enough for u to understand that not only can u make a haze cross but a pure auto haze if time and money wasn't a problem thanks to modern breeding technology.

I dont have habit to name sativa like a haze but in our conversation its mentioned Haze so I continue in that way ...
Problem in outside growing/flowering are with Sativas ...

Thread what you linked, talk about something else, I mean on nucleus and whole gen base.
I know its possible to isolate specific gen but nobody doing that in cannabis breeding (or I dont know for that), hence that
your part about IBL have sense but there left one big problem ... how with IBL to isolate just one gen from one parent and hold all other non changed gens
from another parent, do you see problem ?

Sativa can and will got autoflow gens if we cross it with Ruderalis but in same time it will be changed numerous of other gens.

Only god knows how much it will be changed yielding, smell, size etc etc ...
If there is changed so much of orig gens how we can call it autowlofering Neville's Haze ?

You can take 500 seeds and search for orig mom and dad to copy an strain.
But its impossible to find exactly orig mom and orig dad.
Similar yes, but exactly not.

I agree, some ppl are already in love with autoflowering strains, but its useless for me.
Just lets take this straight , taking only autoflowering form Ruderalis is not correct ... crossing with it its taken much much more ... so what Ruderalis have more good in it except autoflowering ? ?
