1985 seed bank catalog

So I grew my own, and until a few years ago, they were all landrace sativas. Two hit weed mostly, except the Kerala, Durban and Colombian Black. I laugh at people saying that landrace sativas all suck. I sourced some Vietnamese Black seeds this year, and I cannot wait to grow them. Like Durban, they are high in THCv. People take 3 hits of my Durban and complain, so I warn them about the delayed effect, and let them smoke some more if they want. Then it hits them about a half hour later when the THCv wears off, and WHAM!

I love me some creeper weed. It's been forever since I've experienced it, so I'm not sure if it was really the strain or my tolerance at the time. I didn't know it was the THCv causing the delay, that makes sense.

I read the same on the spanish sites about the Colombians being gone now. I have some of CBG's Punto Rojo and Mangobiche. I would like to have their Durban, it looks all sativa and has the anise smell.

As far as the recreating skunk goes, I can definitely see Punto Rojo x Afghan as one possible way. I'll probably try to do Devil x Punto Rojo at some point and maybe Devil x Highland Guerrero/Blueberry. I am one of those weirdos that does like extra stinky skunkyness.

I enjoy reading your experiences with the imports of the 60s on... so what is the strongest that you have in your collection? Can you say more about the Cambo Red?

Many years ago I worked a job in Big Sur. Amazing place, that trip totally changed my direction in life.

I made my own afghan x colombian cross in 1981.
Offspring were not skunky at all.

Genetic tests on Sam's skunk (which everyone agrees is not skunky) show colombian gold as the sativa. Not surprising. Sam took real skunk and immediately starting changing it into something completely different.
Don't expect to find the "formula" for real skunk in the gentics of Sam's line. He selected away from actual skunk every chance he got.
When a line has been diluted and selected for decades away from a trait, at some point, Phylos must certainly lose the ability to reliably identify a parental contributor.

Afghan and Mex is where you want to look.

This time next year, I think the market will finally have real skunk options available through project's like Kevin Jodrey's in who is not trying to recreate it from it's components (afghan P1 x whatever P1) but select it from old true skunk lines from 70's and early 80s and bring it back.

Interesting. The only two things that I can nail down that Sam/Dave/Jungles actually did genetically in Holland was that he de-skunked skunkweed, and he crossed Mel Frank's B line with his de-skunked skunk to make the modern Holland Durban Poison. I grew the modern Holland Durban this year and it is rather lacking in the true Durban high. It also lacks in terpenes. I crossed the Holland Durban with a landrace Durban and I will see what I got this coming year.

Jodrey & Co. have some old lines preserved for sure. He has several old strains that are part of a larger collective in Humboldt and Mendocino. There are still some true breed old heirloom strains floating around Oregon, Washington and California, like Cali-O, real Northern Lights, Mel Frank "A strain" Durban, Blueberry, SAGE, etc. There are also some old landraces here like Colombian Black (AKA, Wacky Weed), Kerala ganja and Jamaican Lambs Bread. I have a collection of my old seeds from NorCal in the 1970s, with a lot of different Colombian and Mexican strains. I also have a growing collection of landraces including Malana, Azad-Kashmir, Lebanese red, various Durbans, Jamaican and SE Asian strains. I am still looking for the elusive Greek Calamata and a good Cambodian Red like I smoked in the early 1970s.

Creeper Weed. Yes. The opposite of couch lock indicas, but they can also produce brain freeze. Or head rushes. The strongest weed in my seed collection? For the sativas, likely Kerala Ganja. Like the Colombians, they bloom really late though. Durban Poison is also strong in its own way, but it is a lift kind of high and not a shove like say, Cinex. Cinex is too rushy for me.

The problem with Cambodian Red is that anything from SE Asia is now called Cambodian Red. Kind of like Mexican Highland, or Colombian Gold. The stuff I had was from a GI in Saigon that sent to to his wife stateside. It was the best he could find. Cambodian Red had an intense clear high like good Durban, but it has a clearer focus to it whereas Durban can cause you to seriously drift. In a good way. Also it did not have the LSD speedy and rushy effects to it like some intense Panama Red had. Cambodian may also be high in THCv, as Vietnamese Black is absurdly high in THCv (and used with a Nepalese to breed the strain Willie Nelson, which I think is the highest tested THCv strain that there is). Like Durban, it is like taking amphetamine, and for someone with ADHD like me, actually slows me down and allows me to hyper focus. I was on Dex for years for ADHD and I had a DEA Rx for it. Dex allows me to focus and not drift mentally. Good sativa does the same thing.

But saying that one strain was the strongest or best weed is not really possible. The thing I love about weed is that it is highly variable, and different strains have different highs to them. I used to be called the 'Medicine Man' by some in Monterey because I always carried around a cloth bag with 3 or 4 stains of weed, hash or Thai stick at any given time. A little Oaxacan, some Thai, some hashish, and some local grown. I also get used to any strain that I smoke for more than a week and become tolerant of it pretty fast. Right now I smoke mostly my Lebanese, because the high is not too intense and it is high in CBD (which is why it is not so intense). I smoke it for pain and to mellow my mood. If I want to get really "high" I smoke a cut of Grape Ape that I got this year. It is like GDP, but does not put me to sleep. The best for sex enhancement is GDP. I also smoke it if I cannot get to sleep.

i love all the old stories:D

im in the monterey bay area and theres still some of us that grow the old strains..

viva la sativa!

Good! The wave of commercial weed growers in California starts in 5 more days. If it is anything like here, the good strains will be available for the first year, and they will then dry up. I want to go down to Wonderland Nursery and pick up some gem cuts if they are still available. They are on a pre-order clone list though, and will likely sell out, or are already sold out.

hey all, some great info being shared here, this is turning into a really geat thread.
I'm wondering if Pylos has tested the Exodus cheese cut? the real one if that's possible? I'm sure they probly have andim wondering whatthe genetic make-up is?
what I'm really after myelf is some wacky weed seed(Columbian) and some Zac purple. probly never going to happen but I can dream.
I still have some of reefermans santa marta gold from the cannabis world days when he first set up as RM and a later generation after he worked it for a while towards the piney pheno.
I also have around 5 different batches of the nam black from over the years, the first being from an Aussie who went under the handle "rodwall".
The nam black was some killer weed and hybridised very well, RM,s Willie nelson was a great match up with the Nepalese, two powerhouse lines.
I'm thinking of f2ing the original willie nelson and seeing what I can find in there to work off from. hard to find good Quality Nepalese lines nowdays. I'm not sure where the RSC version came from but have heard it was from RM,s line and not collected by them from there natural enviorment as a lot of there lines are. I was very intrested in there SE Asian lines, but they don't seem to be offering anythingof the type at the moment. it looks like they are still offering there Kerala line, imextremly intrested in this one, its not the original seed from the region but a reproduction, a couple of generationsremoved but I'm sure the goodness is still in there,so would definatly be worth a look. I have been checking out there Chitrali, its identical to a line sent to me from a guy in Pakistan. He sent me 5 different Pakistani lines, unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to check them all out,but one day I should be able to get around to it. I'm hoping to find agood match to my sativas, only time and alotof work will tell. I'm gettingon in years, hoping my son takes more of an intrest in the older genetics, and will continue my work. with him its all OG kush ect ectorits not worth it man. your stuck in the old days dad. he wasn't impressed with the leb, reakon it tasted weird and wasn't strong enough, just waiting for him to try out some of my sativas ive got curing away, I know its goingto leave him spreechless, litrally! haha, anyway guys, take care and keep up the great convo, loving this thread! Sensient

Hey again, Bodhi, are you the one who runs the seedbank? if yeah would love a chat if you have the time. you have some special genetics in your stable. Shoot me a pm if you have the chance,cheers..Sensient

This content is so dense. It is melting my brain. Sensient you are so knowledgeable about this kind of stuff. I’m newer, and I have to say I have never tried the old land races of the 70s and 80s. But I’m getting all the stuff I can to try and experience it. Loving the restart to this thread as of recent. Thank you guys.

Hard to say what Phylos has tested, and what is real and what is not from their samples. They seem to me leaning toward selling genetic testing and mapping of strains for verification of 'whatever stain' for sales purposes. But I do not see the value in that, as legal sales are limited to in-state in the US and patents are not enforceable at the federal or global level. In all the legal states that I have been, anyone can call any weed strain whatever they want. And for the black market there is no enforcement of anything.

what I'm really after myelf is some wacky weed seed(Columbian) and some Zac purple. probly never going to happen but I can dream.

There are Colombian Black (AKA: Wacky Weed) cuts floating around the PNW. I missed getting one by a few hours this summer. OMMP growers had to cull the herds this year from unlimited numbers of clones to 12 per grow card. I have also seen some seeds of that for sale. I have Zac Purple seeds by way of "real" Big Sur Holy Weed. Tiny and purple. I got the bag of seeded weed myself in Big Sur back in the day. It was just called Big Sur Purple by then, as no one there really ever called it BSHW. The strain blooms really late though and the last time I grew it in Southern Oregon we had an early frost in October, so no F1/IBL seeds. I may do another run in future.

I still have some of reefermans santa marta gold from the cannabis world days when he first set up as RM and a later generation after he worked it for a while towards the piney pheno.

I have over a dozen original 1970s Colombian strain seeds. From the better bag weed in the 70s. The last time I grew any Colombian I was still in California, and they bloom so late it is insane. Most are naturally piney. My last 'lombo run was also an all gold strain; the whole plants were turning gold in October. It started raining and I gave up on them, and put them in an old abandoned house on the lot with the main house I was living in. My lesbian neighbors found them and got some bud off of them, and told me later that, "Those were yours? They smoked up real good!" Um, OK... that was in the waning years of the glory days of cheap weed. The early 80s.

I also have around 5 different batches of the nam black from over the years, the first being from an Aussie who went under the handle "rodwall".

I have a VN Black strain coming in trade that was the one used to make Willie Nelson with. I never have been interested in any Nepalese lines, as the Nepal weed from that I smoked with the likes of the Cambodian Red back in the early 70s was really harsh. I was not that taken with Temple Balls or Fingers either. Most hashish was made from harsh weed, because it was harsh weed. I expected the Lebanese to be harsh for that reason, but Lebanese Red buds are as mellow as can be. Floral and lemony. Great taste. I really do not know why they make this stuff into hashish! Other than the fact that it is on the mild side of potency. So I take 2-3 hits instead of one? So friggin' what. My nephew smokes this sativa extract that is so strong that it made my brother pass out on one hit on Christmas. I had to do a stroke check protocol on him. I am on the local ski Patrol here and I have an OEC card which is the same as an EMT II card, and I do a lot of first response medical stuff. Some of the new extracts are down right hazardous. 80% THC kind of stuff.

I was very intrested in there SE Asian lines, but they don't seem to be offering anything of the type at the moment. it looks like they are still offering there Kerala line, imextremly intrested in this one, its not the original seed from the region but a reproduction, a couple of generationsremoved but I'm sure the goodness is still in there,so would definatly be worth a look. I have been collecting more Indian sativas lately. I have a Kerala and another unnamed South Indian sativa Ganja to try growing this year. They are late blooming, but I am going to try some new methods here this coming year to get them to bloom early. I also have several northern Indian sativas, a Malana Cream and a Kashmir strain, and an Azad Paki strain. I do not go out of my way to get indicas, but I also got a few different Paki indicas this year, one is a Chitrali, and the other is through Morocco which apparently is growing half Paki strain weed now. I also have several Malana crosses, several Jamaican crosses, and some other odd lots.

My nephew says the same thing. Its all extracts and OG Kush re-re-re-re-crossed and back crossed strains. He was not even phased by my 18% Grape Ape cut that I grew this year. It has a clean high and no couch effects. A few years ago I grew OG Kush and several other latest top selling strains to see what all the hype was about. I was not impressed. Its all couch lock weed. I like uplifting and mellow sativas. For me Durban Poison is the bomb. I smoke Leb almost every day, all day. A few hits here, and a few hits there... keep the bizz level and going... no need for head rushes, brain freeze or to pass out 3 times a day. I also smoke GDP to get to sleep some nights. White Widow is also a good day time high if I want to change my mood. Original WW, now called Black Widow. A plug for Shanti here... my nephew thought that WW sucked! Pure sugar coated milky white buds when harvested. Its just not dank enough I guess. Same with my ex. She thought that BSHW and Highland Mexican was bunk, and just wanted the narco lowland Colombian and pure indicas. *shrug* Good thing we are divorced, I guess?

I got to figure out where to get some of Bo-Dee's gear. Those purple laos look wicked....

Laos is where all the Thai genetics and production went after they shut down growing and producing Thai sticks after the VN War ended. Or so they tell me. There is a good YouTube vid on what was the greatest Thailand growing area ever, now nothing is there but memories. They point across the Mekong River at Laos and say that the genetics are all over "there" now. No one wanted to go there though because of the risks.

Hey, maybe worth checking out. Hope you hang around mate. Would love to see the outcome of some of these genetics. Sounds like you have a treasure chest. Would be nice to compare the outcomes of the Vietnam black we hold. SENSIENT
