Various light-cycles???

Hi, i recently was reading articles told by breeder DJ SHORT and he says due to the light cycles being different in certain parts of the world that the light cycle for sativas should be 13/11 veg and 11/13 flowering or another method 15/11 veg and 10/14 flowering for the obvious reasons they are closer to the equator and thus replicating the actual light cycle. He said that one will notice alot of fine tuning if this is done and that the usual 18/6, 12/12 is basically for indica dominant and general blandness of indoor strains. Is there any truth to this? I would like to try these methods soon but would like some more info first on being either a good or bad idea?? Any info would help!

Better Phenotypes through Environment

After many years of firsthand experience breeding herb, I believe that the two most influential environmental triggers for phenotypic variation and expression among current indoor herb breeding projects are:

1 Photoperiod (a.k.a. photo receptivity, light timing or dark period manipulation)

2 Angle of light in relationship to the growing plant.

Specifically, I find the single most powerful influence to the Indica-dominant phenotype is the 18/6 veggie and 12/12 flowering cycle. The 18/6 veggie and 12/12 flower cycle is an attempt (however poor) to mimic the Indica producing outdoor environment (photo-period). It is my belief that this light timing cycle strongly influences the Indica phenotypic expression. Photo periods at the equator would be closer to a 13/11 veggie cycle and an 11/13 flower cycle.

The exact photo-period formula that I incorporate into my growing/breeding regime will remain a trade secret, but my advice is to experiment with different photo-periods, keep good notes and pay attention. Avoid the 18/6--12/12 photo-periods while "tweaking" the times in half-hour increments or less with each breeding cycle until more desirable results in the finished product and the next generation of offspring are noted.

I'm not sure if this is what you wanted, CANNABISMAN...DJ's book is definitely worth owning...the section on angle of light is great too...hope this helps...jay:)

I would think when growing a sativa strain we would need to ask the breeder what light cycle was used to produce the seeds in order to find a benchmark! Thank god we have such great access to Shanti and his welth of knowledge.

I would love to hear from Shanti on this issue because I an not real sure what ligh cycle I should be using for my mango haze and ASH beens I just pooped!

I have a friend that just finished a lemon haze with an 18/6 -12/12 normal indica type cycle and the haze finished just fine so #@^$%#*^%$( I am totally lost....lol

i definately agree with modifying your light schedule from 12/12 when flowering heavier sativas.

this run with the master kaze is actually an 11.5/12.5 day/night schedule, and next run will be 11/13 since the phenos I have are a little heavier on the sativa side of things...

here's an article I have on the topic, since jay posted his....actually, I think this may be a more expansive version of the same thing :D

What's up, Amoril...long time no talk...;)

DJ Short's book actually contains all those articles...I've never read CC, but his book is awesome...talks about all this and more:cool:...in the front it says...

"Chapters 2-13, 16, 17, and 18 are revised from articles that previously appeared in Cannabis Culture magazine."

Chapter 1 is about safety...Chapters 14 and 15 are about seed production and genetic inheritence respectively...both awesome if you're into that...jay:)
