Testing, testing EQ and SSH hybrids

I don't really understand what the S2 generation in this case means.

Does it mean that the SSH x Haze AC seeds are feminized?

MB
This is me guessing, but I think it means that the S2 was a feminised strain, but with the addition of the ac male it will turn it back into a regular strain. I would imagine it was something like Shanti went through SSH lines, really liked that one and so selfed it, used that as the mother with the Haze AC male that makes up the rock n roll lines.

The only bit I can't work out is why it needed to be selfed, but I am assuming that its trade/ industry secrects, and its actually probably a super simple explanation of "these two S1s are delicious, what happens when we cross them?".

i don't think @shantibaba work with feminised seeds

Shanti does not offer fems in his regular catalogue, however we do know that he has many companies/breeders that he does contract work with, hence fem seeds made for other companies and left over fem stock being offered on shantibaba seeds website.
There are 2 ways to lock in desirable traits and stabilize a line, one is line breeding using 2 dioecious plants to produce an IBL, the other is to self a plant (a singular plant with both female and male organs) with observed, desirable traits.
The first generation of this process becomes known as S1, a first generation selfed plant as opposed to F, as in filial.
Depending on the homogeneity of the parent plant used, variation may occur in the S1 population. If one finds a desirable pheno within this group, one can again, self one of those plants to create an S2 line.
Shanti has taken an SSH clone and combined with his killer Haze AC male. The result is that these offerings can potentially impart more Haze A. This is my understanding.
Of course, the originator Shanti, has the last word.

Hi and one Love beloved Braddaz and Sistaz,

Here are a few thoughts from my side — and I want to make it clear that I’m not pointing fingers at anyone, especially not when it comes to our beloved plant.

In general, I’m not the biggest fan of feminized seeds. I’ve had some mixed experiences with them in the past, including a relatively high number of hermaphroditic plants. That said, I’m aware that this often comes down to how carefully a breeder selects and stabilizes their lines. And in this particular case, I trust that Shanti has done that work properly.

At the same time, we all know how this plant behaves. Even regular plants, towards the end of their life cycle, can sometimes throw a few male pollen sacs as a survival mechanism — even when selected strictly from female plants. Those seeds will, of course, tend to be female again.

What I do think happens quite often in general is that some breeders may not fully test plants for stress resistance. Factors like light intensity, nutrient issues, or other environmental stress can trigger hermaphroditic traits. If such plants are then used for selfing, that trait can carry over.

I don’t believe that’s the case here. Selfing does have clear advantages — you already know the traits of the plant, and by pollinating it with itself, those traits can be preserved and stabilized more quickly compared to working with separate male and female lines over multiple generations. And of course, we all know how it is in the business — time is money.

Crossing those lines back with regular genetics can also be a solid approach. Personally, I have no concerns about working with something like Super Silver Haze S2 crossed with Haze AC. I am so Happy to be Part of the Testing, one Love.

That being said, I’m not a biologist or a scientist — this is just my personal opinion, and no one has to agree with it.

As I mentioned, my own experiences with feminized seeds haven’t always been great. And I do think it’s unfortunate when beginners, who are just looking for a smooth start, buy cheap feminized seeds and end up with a seeded harvest instead of the all-female run they were hoping for.

I can’t say exactly why I had those issues. Friends of mine have had no problems at all. When I’ve asked seedbanks, the answer is usually that there must have been an issue in my setup. But so far, I haven’t been able to identify any clear problems — especially not when running regular seeds.

Anyway, these are just my thoughts.

One Love. Peace. 🌱

The environment can produce hermaphroditism even with good genetics. Regarding our initial topic, I think it's more about a backcross. Stop with your feminized seeds; a breeder doesn't use feminized seeds to make crosses.

sorry my bad made a mistake and edited it on page 3. It was a selected female of the seed we sell as SSH. Nothing to do with feminized seeds. Again apologies did not reread my post before i posted it...my mistake.

Sounds insanely good and exactly the kind of forethought shanti would use. I love it.
Peace
