What ive found very interesting about growing over the last few years especially is the plants ive had that smelt more than all the rest id grow out end up being the strongest as far as the high goes,

I wanted to get some of your thoughts on how you all go about selecting female plants that may be kept as clones or mothers,When im growing out a pkt or two of a breeders seed line I usually pick out the best smelling plants,

There are many more reasons for selecting mothers and clones to keep i know, the smell is just one reason yes, im pretty sure this same topic is in the latest high times magizine also,

Just something to keep in mind and try for that next special slection.

I've read somewhere that smell and potency are not related. However, everyone sure seems to like the aesthetics of the terpines associated with good medicine. I looked for the bulbous stalked trichomes, then smell second along with yield for breeding purposes.

Hey BAM, I'm with ya. When I was smoking and buying (not growing :D), I always thought 'The smell is the tell.' Even when buying brick import, if I cracked it open and it smelled 'special' in any way (stronger), it was better smoke. Now that I'm growing, I think the same thing. The smell is the tell.

BTW, the SSH I used for my first batch of crosses was not real strong smelling in early veg, but by flower, he smelled as strong as any one of the females. Delicious dry haze, and he has fathered KILLER plants (superspices, sshf2's, supershit).

I was JUST thinking about the 'stinky from the get go/stinkier than the rest' thing when I transplanted the last plant tonight. I put 6 plants ~4+ weeks old (in 12/12 but not sexed yet, 3-4 week veg) into 1 gallons tonight, and the last one STUNK of sweet skunk. I think it is a G/Sk f2, but it is from a batch of bagseed. I have labeled gsk f2's going now too, so I'll be able to see. VERY strong smell, early. I'm not makin any MORE seeds after I chop the males I have for a while.

Hey have you run the BW, BAMBI? I have these LaNinas, and they are some rottten funk, along the same lines as a skunk/pine/piss/garlic/dirtyanus. The Shits I have are young and stinky. :D

stinky pants go commando lol j/k
im def on board with you fella's nice stinky plants = nice stinky potent weed.
the stinkier the better lol.

taste buds

Interesting subject. Throwin in my uninformed 2c's I would guess it went like this. When cannabis thru the ages has been bred for smoke, people have always looked for strong flavour related traits as well as potency. So when we find plants with more flavour they are also likely to carry more buzz, both charicteristics having been heavily selected for. Hell, if people liked great smelling crap weed, strong flavours would probably be more associated with weak plants. Its always interested me that the best weed in a given place will usually carry flavours the locals like in their food etc too. Of course its because they've bred for those characteristics they like best.

Good point, Ketu. I think that there is a link between certain smells, and certain highs or intensity of highs. I can't prove it, but IME, buds that smell lemony, or hazy, or peppery or rotten or stanky seem to give me a more pleasurable high than buds that are incensy, or floral, or 'pleasantly fruity'. I bet that my brain figgured this out in the first few experiences - "Ok, I like this more than that..." - even if I didn't conciously think that a smell related to a high profile.

When I smoke my favorite smelling buds, I go from this:

Hi there, of course im only going by my past and recent experiences with smell and potency, yet the magizines i read now days seem to think the same or simillar, plus its just one slection of many to look for like you said, ie yield and trichomes etc.

Gidday patrick, - bag seed can be a good thing i reckon, sometimes ive found bag seeds that looked really interbred, this occuring by other people like us interbreeding stable varietys i suppose,

I wish i could catch a wiff of those f/2's matey, they sound delicious indeed.

I realize this thread is a month or two old, but its being revived / bumped none the less.

Im up late, browsing the forums to see whats new in the older stuff lmao, bumped into this one, and I wanted to add to it.

you guys are dead on, and its not just coincedence, nor is it imaginary.

Ill try to keep this simple, but if I fugg up in the process and get something backwards, my bad LOL.

as was already mentioned, the smell is derived from the terpenoids (and, dont forget the phenols !)

Now, whats cool.... im gonna work this backwards, for that 'woh' factor LOL....CBG is the first cannabinoid synthesized, and from it we get CBC, THC, or CBD.

CBG is formed from the union of olivetolic acid (C12 olivetolic acid typically) with geranyl diphosphate (GPP). (sidenote, if anyone has read much on THCV, this is the point of difference from THC...C10 olivetolic acid vs. C12 in standard THC).

so, so far, THC <- CBG <- Olivetol + GPP. The real kicker is the next step

Olivetolic acid is, simply, a terpenophenolic, or a terpene + a phenol. SO, the chemicals responsible for the aroma ARE directly linked to the cannabinoids.

Some really good info on the terpenes matey, it all fits in nicely what you said indeed, cheers.
