should be interesting to see how they both turn out ive heard good things about sensi NL well those that could get them to germ anyway.

Hi All

well I meet Ben in Bali soon as he is also working a little there nowadays with property. So nice to see both seeds in a thread will show him how Sensi is doing as he is rarely in Holland nowadays.

I think Ortega is a strong plant for those who like heavy hitting stoning...but will watch this thread like all of you to see how you feel it goes...

all the best sb

NL 10 and Ortega coloring

The other day I PM'd Shanti about some coloring at the tops of my Ortegas. 3 of my plants had a slight purpling color at the very top of each plant. This was on the biggest leaf on both sides of the top set. It was slight and I was unable to get a good photo due to the camera I use is a cellphone. Thats why most my picture kind of suck. I have only seen this before on strains that are known to turn purple. Shanti replied by asking if my EC was high or where was it at. I dont have a meter so I cant answer that. Has anyone seen this before on any plants that are not purple? Or can a plant exhibit colors like this with a high EC? My grow room is 74-78 degrees, rarely! over 80 especially this time of year and I've never seen it below 70.

I just love the look of this plant.

The NL #5 (my numbering not actual) declared female as well as the #6. So as of today I have 3 NL females. 4 of the rest are looking like males and 1 is still undecided.
NL #5 female.

The NL #10 is still having problems. When I first noticed the issue I transplanted into a larger container. I gave it 7-10 days and it was not getting better. I flushed it on the 2nd with a 1/4 strength of Pure Vida (a new fert for me) I typically do not normally use a new fert on a plant I have not grown before. I break rules sometimes and hopefully this time will not be that bad. Today I looked at the plant and it appears to have helped the mag issue but now it looks under fed. Not that surprising considering I flushed it with a weak solution. I also had to top the plant due to height restrictions. I hope this will not stress out the plant to much that it will not be able to recover. This plant was my favorite NL during initial growth. So I am a little dissapointed to say the least. The following pics are of it today.

I believe this is a magnesium issue. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?

This is the top I cut off 2 days after flush

The ph is 6.2-6.3. New growth starts out yellow then turns similiar to what you see in the pictures. There's a lot of weird Deformities towards end of leaves. I am thinking possible mutation/virus but at the start this was the best looking NL. I'll probably flush it again in a week or so and I may just give it a light feeding between now and then to see what happens. Kind of losing hope in this one though.

males and females

So a quick update I culled 4 NL males this last week.
NL #9. This is what all the NL typicaly look like. At first I thought there would be more variety given there listed as f1. it seems they are more of a stable f1 than I thought.

NL male # 3 2 and 7

Typical root mass of NL males culled

This is the stem of NL 3. Def not hollow. None of the males displayed any outstanding characteristics for breeding so I will not be saving any of them.

Ortegas #5 6 and 10 flowered by a shot of #2. Lovely ladies that are being put into 18/6 under 400w of MH. I want them a little taller before I take cuttings. 25 days to show sex, WOW!

There is still NL #4 that is undeclared. I have 3 NL females one of shich is still having problems. I have been thinking about culling it because of all the problems but I think I will be hanging onto it because I have the room and I want to get it to recover. The rest of the ortegas are still under t5's and I believe the rest are males but unsure.

To date I have 4 NL females the #5,#10,#4 and the #6 shown below.

I have placed the #5 into flower on 6-15. It was apporx 20 inches tall and virtually no smell.

The #10 is on its way out. I first thought it was a magnesium issue, I know think its more possibly zinc related. Nothing I seem to do makes any improvement. As a last resort I am going to repot the plant in a milder soil mix and see what happens. It may just have no tolerance for ferts.

Ortega 1 Declared female and is 15 inches tall.

Ortega 2 is female and 14 inches tall along with #1 it is one of the most compact ones.

Ortega 5 female 16 inches tall

Ortega 6 female 15 tall

Ortega 7 female 12 inches tall. Bottom of stem curls a complete 360.

Ortega 9 tri female 13 inches tall

Ortega 10 female 15 tall

I have cloned the NL5 and it showed roots within 10 days. Very typical from what has been reported with the northern light strain. After all of these shots were taken the ortegas were topped for clones. I have not been able to get much for smell off of the NL. The ortegas are just starting to smell a little. Especially when you rub the stems. I cant pinpoint it yet but I think the odor will be strong on these ones. I plan on vegging these until the clones take. Once they do I will be putting them into flower.

Ortega 4 has been my favorite all along because of its round leaves and short stature. It turned out male. I could not be happier. Hopefully when I pop the rest of my Ortegas I will have a female that also leans afghan.

Ortega 3(top pic) and 8 turned out to be male. They both had a low tolerance for fertilizers. I have been giving the plants about 1/4 strentgh pure vida. Easy cull for both.

Hey RF,
All the pictures look quite fantastic, it seems that your Ortega are much more compact and lush compared to the NL...i've heard great things about their NL but these Ortega's are already shining ahead of the others imho...can't wait to see the comparison on yield and potency, great growing and a great idea for a sidy by side...soon i hope to compare Shanti's NL5xAfghan to Nirvana's Aurora Indica which is AfghanxNL as the aurora is a real head/body smasher from previous experience and can't wait to see how they perform side by side

Looking good Resinfinger,

Got some Ortega and NL hybrids myself in the post this week, but won't be popping them for a while, gonna run the new haze hybrids I got first.:D
But I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what they turn out like, could be some lovely winter time smoke and I think you'll do them justice.

Regarding the plant you were having a few problems with, I find a light seaweed spray seems to get alot of plants back on track, seems to work for plants that are suffering nute def as well as nute burn.
Peace, GG

the ortegas def have more nodes and are compact and bushy. I actually thought I would see more similarities between the two. We wil see if they stretch alot in flower. There is alot of leaf though on them so that could be a downer. The NL's may really bulk up. They def have a good rep. It's still early so time will tell. I don't really grow for yield, it's not my focus but nice to have. The NLs have given me some nute probs but more than likely that's my fault although nute tolerance is a desirable trait IMO. Potency will be the key of course. Good luck with your comparison thread I to have the nl5 afghan and am waiting to grow them.

GG
good to have you joining the fun. I'll give the kelp a try and see what happens.

Just dropping in to see all the girls. It's going good though I like the looks of the Ortega a little more. :)

2 ortegas into flower

NL5 19th day of flower and is 36 inches tall

NL10 this one sucks. This was about 5 days after a light kelp spray. I dont think it made a diff. After this was taken I knocked off most soil leaving a small ball and transplanted into same size container with sunshine #4. No additives and pure water for a few weeks. If that does not work shes gone.

Ortega 10 first day of flower 7-3 and 20inches tall (same as NL5)

Ortega 1 first day of flower and 20 in tall

The rest of the Ortegas are still vegging. Im waiting for a few to show roots in the cloner. I have more pics but that error message popped up and im not waiting.

Hi all,
This is an excellent thread Resinfinger, Im willing to bet quite a few are paying attention to your results. Another great grower here at MNS, CosaNostra, is also growing the Mr. Nice Ortega and I must say Im quite impressed with the level of breeding that we're seeing from the MNS camp. This is a Northern Lights variety that has quite a reputation for itself, looking forward to this and more in the future rf.

:)

I wish I had grabbed a pack of Ortega when they were available, but I can't complain with the choices I made - SSH, Med, Shark, NL5/Af, NL5/Hz :)

I didn't think another NL variety would be special, but these pics put Ortega at the top of my wish list.

Thanks for the thread

Jesse

thanks for the kind words. I have not seen a thread on cosanostra's ortega's. Dwc225 and medicine man have threads as well on these. I think we are all at about the same point with them. Dwc225 had some issues with the person taking care of them or lack there of but I think he has cuttings that we will be seeing soon. I'm impressed by how uniform they all are, medicine mans IMO look healthier than mine but other than that they look identical. Def a testament to the breeding skills at mns.

I'm glad my thread has helped make up your mind on your next purchase. Considering we have not seen any in flowering yet. The ones you did get I'm sure you will be happy with. What ones are you gonna start with? I'd love to see more nl5 x afghan or nl5 x haze threads.

Thanks again everyone I'll have more going into flower shortly and I will try to as detailed as I can during the flowering stage.

I popped a few of each pack. Most are still vegging but I have a nice looking male and female MedMan flowering. Both are compact and stinky. The hollow male stem smells like honeysuckle.
