Sending Pollen / Pollen Exchange

Can Pollen be sent in the post and whats the likelihood that it will still be viable upon arrival?

Anyone ever done it?

Got balls

G`day Folks
A very good question imo .I have been interesred in this subject for a while .Apparently heat and moisture are the biggest threats to viability [remove all plant material from collected pollen and use a dessecant or simmilar ]
But I`m all ears if some of our members have more info /1st hand expirience.
Chime in guys an girls this thread could really open up some amazing possibilities if we could find a way to preserve pollen for transport .
Thanks for bringing this subject up .

If it was possible to send and it was possible to keep it viable once it arrived in its location then we could start our very own Cannabis Sperm bank..

We could call it .. Canna Jizz Junkies!!

???'s

I have also thought of this. WHile I have no evidence to support what I say next. It is only theory...

If HEAT, and MOISTURE would be the main issues. Then we would need to remove that trubles. So unless we have someone step in who has done so tell us. I think we can shoot our ideas here. Remove heat....Simple mail it during the winter time/cold season. Yes it limits the times we can mail, but also removes the element of heat. I know they would be in a mailroom somewhere, but I don't think long enough to need worry. Moisture is harder to deal with. Maybe put pollen in a straw, and then straw into a small medicine bottle packed with rice. It should be safe until it arrives.

Now I'd like to know what can be done as for the mailing. Can, will this be cinfiscated? They might think it to be something illegal, but how culd they test it to see if it was pollen from our herb plant? Well those are my thoughts...Ns

I never have sent or stored pollen.

I saw this yesterday and thought a little about it. Ideally I think timing the two plants would work best. Meaning one person starts the female and shortly after ( week of two) the male is started. Once pollen is collected immediatly send it via 2-3 air or ground.
I've read that freezing pollen is the way to go when storing. Avoiding storing the pollen I think may help. Although if you could freeze it and ship it with dry ice may work as well.
Properly stored while shipping in airtight container with desiccant is how I would do it.

I'm probably wrong but that's my two cents.

Well you can get ice packs that last 24hours so keeping it cool/cold aint no problem as long as its within 24 hours.

When you think of the conditions pollen has to endure in its natural climate, you would think that a few days in the post would be no biggie.

How long is pollen usually viable for as I have heard people getting seeds months after they had a male drop pollen in their grow room by accident

after doing some quick reading this is what I have found

I keep it stored with rice and flour in the vials
I have kept pollen for over 18 months and it has still been viable. I don't keep it in the freezer i keep it in the fridge.
i have also used a contact lens case with no rice, but with flour and pollen was viable after a year.

I would try sending it sealed with desiccant no ice and seeif it works. I've read it's viable for a month to a year depending on where you research. If frozen it seems to last longer. I woul assume if collected, mailed and pollinated within 2 weeks it should be ok.

Hi

I have also read that mixing with flour will help to spread it out more. Yet I have only read this. As have always used pollen, and saved it. Then again I have used within a few weeks...Ns

I would also feel that as said. If sending thru the post. That a few days won't hurt it. Gl...Ns

Hello to all

I' ll can say this in a while, i received some pollen and i just put it few days ago on a plant i have behind my window, so i' ll see soon i hope:)

I received another time a bigger amount i' d say, and the pollen didn' t work, it was old pollen too as i know, and i used a lot of, and 0 seeds not even a start...so i don' t know what play for that, but i' d say the age..

Got some NYCD pollen at home and it worked for one year, kept in the fridge with dessecant. I have put in my freeze a few amount of Haze hybrid A pollen to see if it can live longer, but i will have to try this in some ages.

Agree with you, i think if the pollen is really new and fresh, it will be ok, moreover if you prepare a good package

this is VERY possible...day or two in the mail at most is best..winter temps may be an issue, with hot/cold packages, you know indoors then outdoors with postman.

I'll post up some info on this in a day or two...times short for me right now.

rice and flour are good starts, proper drying and goodly amounts of pollen help.

G`day Folks
Thats got the ball rollin ,now all we need is someone with 1st hand exp .All we have is annecdotes so far c`mon bros an sisters I know the truth is out there !

As I understand it, pollen is only good for about 3 days. I have had some success keeping the pollen in the fridge, but it soon becomes a hit and miss affair, and I couldn't afford to miss. Pollen will "germinate"(what's the right word?) in the presence of water.
I always hosed down my males prior to use. This causes the pollen which had been shed, to release it's germ-plasm and is no longer a threat. Fresh pollen is then used from newly opened flowers.
Most mail services are not reliable enough to guarantee success. Putting it on a plane would get it anywhere in the world on time, but you might have trouble explaining what it is. Of course, only small amounts are required. It might become "lost" in a bigger package. Last time I couriered mail by plane it cost $180 if I remember correctly, and that was years ago.
We need more research into extending the life span of pollen. Any scientists out there?

ok...another forum I'm on...folks share pollen fairly often.

first you need to dry it very well, low heat like under a heat lamp, full male flowers "just" ready to open or FRESH pollen. next it NEEDS to be kept dry, no water, it kills the pollen, and lowest humidity as possible. it should be packed with a desiccant and kept in fridge or freezer if to be kept for any length of time.

the usual routine is this, collect and dry pollen on a pane of glass or mirror( the more the better)take a small bit of rice and flour( as an extender and dryer) and dry them also, once its all dried to your satisfaction( no hard rule here and cooking pollen is BAD) pack it ALL in a sealed glass vial , then freeze or mail ASAP.

much of the pollen will not survive, so as much as can be gathered the better, but if you only need 100 or so seeds its VERY doable. it can be a bit hit or miss as Nev said. mailing Continent to Continent could be an issue, though I know folks that have done it with success.

you can keep pollen for 3-6 months no problem, up to a year plus with some good luck.

I use these little screw top vials.

I make a foil slide , for if the bananas open while Im away.

Pollen tends to stick to foil, so You have to dust it down.

Then I dry it, add rice kernels, cap it tight, refrigerate over night, then into the Pollen Bank in the freezer.
As You Guys know, its hit and miss with stored pollen, but it sometimes works pretty well.
Ive been wondering how long pollen would stay viable stored in a pyramid?

I did about 30 assorted pollination crosses over the past 12 weeks outdoors. While many were from fresh males, some were from freezer stored up to a year or more. I will share the results when I get things sorted out.

G`day Doc
Thanks for your input bro ,I can see some very interesting manipulations coming up .
Love the slippery slide , neccesity ; the mother of invention .Keep up the good work!
