This one here appears to have a touch of NL5 in it. Without smelling/tasting it I'd say it's a NL5.SKxAfgT.SK.
N.

Well spotted, it does indeed have some NL in it. The precise lineage is complicated:

'Sour Diesel' aka ECSD came from an accidental cross of ('91 Chemdawg x Mass Super Skunk/NL)x DNL after the DNL hermed and seeded the room. The DNL's lineage is NL/Shiva x Hawaiian.

The Mass Super Skunk is just a pheno of Super Skunk, it was crossed to a male NL5xNL2. Not sure about the DNL, it's something bred in NYC in the early 90s, god knows what Hawaiian was used.

This is the mother of the Sour Diesel/ECSD, a cutting known as Original Diesel among other names:

Original Diesel' (also known as Diesel #1, Headband, Daywrecker Diesel, Underdawg) came from a cross of '91 Chemdawg x (Mass Super Skunk x Sensi's Northern Lights) done by a guy known as ‘weasel’.

Nev, if you wanted to create a strain that had a similar lemons, solvent and fuel smell/taste to the Sour Diesel, what route would you take? Perhaps a Super Skunk male crossed to the Diesel pheno of NL5Haze (A5 or C5? I forget)?

I have a ECSD cut flowering now, 40 days in, takes 80-85 days, when it's done I'll send ya a sample.

Imagine growing the plant that makes the diesel stink, before carbon filters.

All we had to cover the smell was fabric softener taped over box fans, or Lysol, or ONA.

The reality of RKS was, the people that used to grow it were the first to go to jail for cultivation. It was one of the easiest plants to grow but the hardest to conceal.

You Smell THAT!?,

Edit - Matthewriot, 17$ for ONE seed!!!??? How do you live with yourself??? How many seeds you get on a plant? Times 17$ each!!! Does the plant take three years to mature? Dude you need to pay your dues for a few years then win some harvest fests then charge 5$ a seed then win more harvest fests then continue to charge 5$ a seed IMO. If you can, replace the thoughts you have of making a quick fortune with the idea that YOU are a provider of medicine. You do realize you are advertising on Nev's and SB's website charging MORE than them??? The two BEST Cannabis breeders the world has EVER known.!??? Shame on you!

Yeah man, the RKS died out because of it's stink, like I said, Green Merchant drove people underground and indoors and with the primitive setups of the early 80s it wasn't clever to grow a stinker like RKS indoors in an illegal situation, a lot of people were bust, the others switched to less stinky strains, probably what happened in most cases was they ordered seeds from Nev to replace the old stuff they had that was either too stinky or wasn't adapted to indoors.

Hey BH,

I had two friends go down because of the RKS. I grew it for two runs before the paranoia got the best of me. I switched to Hawaiian Indica and the Four Way after two runs with that stench in the air. It was just TOO much for me to handle. EVERYTIME I pulled up into my driveway it felt like my chest was going to explode. Kind of like the first time you "drop in" on a skateboard, or swimming in the sea and something BIG with tough skin bumps into you. The SuperSkunk was a very big fish, that most of us were NOT ready to catch. Thank goodness for carbon filters, NOW I can handle the responsibility.

Cops did a stop and knock about a month after I switched. I moved 3 weeks later.

Well without smelling it, I'm not sure what the term diesel represents in this case. You mention that Northern Lights is behind it and that will include the NL2 male. NL2 as a strain had quite fuelly smells, which to me represents kush (you must understand that this assumption comes from cross referencing kush strains, not hard facts). In any case, the NL2 will account for many types described as diesel. Even the NL5 hybrids would throw a % of fuel like smells, indicating some common ancestry with NL2. I would expect that further inbreeding to 5x2 would throw predominantly NL2 type smells, unless you selected away from this, it would quickly become fixed. Lemon diesel would be a good description of what I call Kush.

Thanks for that input Nev, wish I had some NL5xNL2 seeds to work with!

Did you ever offer NL2 in pure form? I don't recall seeing it in any of your catalogues.

Hey Kyle, your experience with RKS sounds similar to mine with Cheese/Skunk #1, that shit defeated my carbon filter twice and second time nearly got me bust, came home from work one day and I could smell it as I got out of the car outside my house. That crop was at 55 days so it came down that night, really needed 65 but it was for commercial so 55 was good enough and preferable to getting bust!

Namaste :D

Wow Namaskar, I was not even aware of this, aside from the bit I have read about it on this site, could you please post the rest of this article, for the sake of historical posterity? Remarkable! Thank you for this glimpse into the past.

where im originally from in the midwest us, almost everyone learns to grow with willams wonder or a pheno of it called squeezed louise, you couldn't have any in your pocket or you'd smell up the room, its smell goes through filters and you can smell your house at least one block away. and its smell seriously resembles a dead skunk, its more sativa with small profuse crystals, bright neon green with light pink pistils and grows bush like, sort of like trainwreck in its growth pattern, it wont support the weight of its buds without staking. it yields really well (5 pounds off 8 plants in dwc hydro using general hydro products) under 3400 watts. wish i still had the cutting. i know willams wonder was offered way back in the early 80's is it a relative of rks?
also ive always wondered if the strain was from southern oregon cause there is a town called wonder and town called willams about 40 miles from each other, could be coincidence though? thanks

i am also from the midwest, usa and skunk is a favorite subject of mine but i will only bore you with a couple of comments. one peeve of mine has been the use of "road kill" to describe old time skunk. this is not accurate. i will be the first to concur that the stench was overpowering at times but there is no way one could associate death with the stink. the odor was sharp, it could sting your nose some it was so sharp, but this odor was distinctly akin to fresh spray from a skunk. the first homegrown to show up in midwest, usa in the early to mid70s was skunk and in fact it was the only homegrown for a long time. it was extremely potent too and it is evident that in getting the skunk smell out of the skunk which became skunk#1, considerable potency was sacrificed. i was not a big fan of this original skunk. first time or two it was around it was unique but then odor became an issue. some folks felt both smell and high were nauseating? and it was the main thing coming out of cali then and the only thing for a couple of years. imports were at their quality peak so it was hard to compete for skunk growers?

another little piece of history to pass on also deals with ms. skunk. it's been a long time since my last trek to cali but at one time every major intersection in every large city in cali used to have these newspaper boxes with free copies of various thought and advertising. grab one of these rags to read on the bus? one of the most prominent of these free papers was a radical, liberal newspaper featuring free thought that was called the l.a. free press. in 1973, the l.a. free press published an article that included the recipe on how to make skunk as well as a treasure map of sorts directing the reader to various locations where the genetics could be found. one could go to this area in l.a. for afghani then up to berkley for the columbian and on and on. it does make one wonder how many versions were really out there at some point? it was the only thing being sold that was grown in cali for a period of at least two years, perhaps longer, and then it just disappeared. and no one really missed it up until now? peace-biteme

That's really interesting about the LA Free Press article. Nowadays there are billboards directing you to your nearest collective. ANd you're 100% right - It smells like fresh spray from a skunk. Usually when a skunk gets hit all of that smell is released (as long as it was recent) and it's the same odor - that is, of course if you dig your nose into the mutilated skunk and get to smell last night's skunk dinner!

I noticed that there are phenos of Jack Herer that are dead on identical to Sour Diesel as well. Same sativa looks, same exact sativa smell. I was unaware that NL #2 was one of the plants producing this smell as a base for the rest of the genetics it touched. There's a LOT of hype right now about the NL #6, which I believe is a much later creation than the original Northern Lights. But for me, I've had a rough time finding ANY NL #1, #2, #2.5, #5 anywhere!

Well then lucky me!
Got a mess of roadkill skunk seeds through my collective, Ill keep yall posted on what they turn into most definitely.l. this thread has me stoked!
