Northern Lights if we don't do something it'll b lost forever

1st off i know this has been brought up many times but i believe that this will bring alot of old n new growers to MNS if Shantibaba would bring out a more NL dominate line......i've been over on ICmag n jus keep seing things how NL has changed so much and that even sensi's isn't up to par anymore MNS is us NL lovers only hope

I've read thread after thread on how much people love NL n how they want it back thers alot of contreversy on whos got f1s n of wat NL versions do they hav but sein that since Shanti n Nev def had them they shuld still have some around right?

I kno indicas arent' loved by everyone but i believe thousands of people will take these right off the shelf if Shanti came out wit the old NL n new hybrid lines

Just thinkin of how many people love NL5 haze n the NL#5 cut their must b some NL seeds not hybrided that you can choose through to get another good mother n father to start something like a more improved Northern lights

I know that thers the NL5 Haze x Skunk out now but that n SSH is the closest thing to NL out that i trust and their only 25%

I think a inbred NL bred by Shantibaba would bring a old taste n a new love to the cannabis world also adding in something like a NL x Skunk Haze or a Nevs Haze x Nl hybrid

My main ? is the NL#5 cut still alive? and if so i don't understand why it wouldn't b used?

From what i've heard it was a very resinous good yieldin plant that worked well n shortend the bud cycle of everything it was hybrided to y wouldn't she make a good mother for something else?

If you get the chance to read this Shantibaba i'd like to say ty for your time and all the time you've already put in into making these most beloved strains

i and others have been begging for years...when you have all the gems that Shanti has to work with and only a limited amount of time i don't know if we will ever see a NL from MNS...i know its probably not on the books but i've been begging for a full blooded indica from MNS for years, i think best bet is a dreamtime pack which has some landrace NL and Afghan

Forgive Me , But Am I Right In Understanding NL#5 Also Went Under The Strain Name Shiva Shanti ?
Or Shiva ?
I Remember Reading It Somewhere
Also ; Does NLX Belong To The NL Family ? Does White Widow Have NL Genetics In It ?
Just Wondering :)
JKP

From what i've read of what Neville said the NL#5 was only a cutting and Shiva Shantis a hybrid made by Ben Dronkers named after his daughters i don't believe its a NL hybrid but it culd b

and from my knowlegde white widow definantly doesn't have any NL in it

it says its a South indian x Brazilian hybrid no afghani NL genes in ther

Good idea bout the Dreamtime mix tho curious i was thinkin the same thing but all the dreamtime mixes i've seen don't seem to b plain landraces they look like mixd up hybrids not like it says in its description i think shantis changed the dreamtime mixes seeds depending on wat he has quantity of

Shiva Shanti was a NL/Skunk. Very strong but not easy to grow.
Shiva Shanti II (the more popular) was weaker but REALLY easy to grow.

Both are 50% NL, I believe.

White Widow doesn't contain NL.

I have posted a wish for straight NL5 seeds on this forum quite recently. I am a NL lover - No doubt (even though I consider myself a sativa man through and through) I would buy several packs of pure [regular] NL5 straight away.

I used to grow Oasis (NL2) but I found that it (or I) has changed over the years. I tried a few small boutique seed companies versions but they weren't true - or that good. I have got around the problem by choosing an extreme NL phenotype of a NL/Skunk hybrid from a reputable seed company. It took a lot of searching for, though, as there is not 1 per pack at all... It isn't a perfect solution but I'm closer to where I want to be, it'll do until Neville finds the time to do the work on the NL5. I heard he was close to bringing out this line years ago, before some personal troubles he ran into...

i agree wish shanti would do a nl release. the best nl cross i ever ran would be chimeras frostbite. i tried a few different nl crosses and stright nl but none really intrest me. frostbite was a insane yielder that looked drenched in crystals

I too would kill a small rabid mountain lion with my bare hands for a shot at a true NL.. I've kept an eye on the boards over the years and from what I can tell a lot of people like Dr. Atomics version a lot, but I've never seen anyone that knew for sure whether it was a true representation or not.. They just said it was kick ass in general.. Anyone have any input on that one?

Hi all,
I recommend looking further into the Northern Lights accounts to suss out for yourselves what is fact and what is fiction out there surrounding NL.

Originally written by Dr. Atomic
In 1988 I went to Amsterdam and bought seeds from the Sensi Seed Bank, Positronics, and others. I got the original Northern Lights #5, developed at the Cannabis Castle by Nevil Schoenmaker and Ben Dronkers. My current Northern Lights mothers are a result of generation-by-generation selection of males out of a certain batch and females out of another one.

Originally written by Dr.Atomic
I acquired the original Northern Lights in 1988 from the seed banks in Amsterdam. I also got some Northern Lights from the northwest here in British Columbia, and over the last 18 years Ive been perpetuating it and outcrossing it to other strains I like. Its not rocket science; I just observe and smoke. I believe that all pot is medicinal. Thats my credo. I like to say that Im a pot shaman first and merchant second, so for me its about the experience and not the piles of dough. I know people out there think growers get rich, and that may be true for a few, but I think the best pot we have is the pot we grow for ourselves. My favorite strain has probably always been the pure Northern Lights. Potent, stocky and fat from its Afghani heritage, with certain improvements that give it a great long lasting high its got everything. I try to raise indicas that have shown to be good for pain, insomnia, and other physical aspects.

NL is just a hyped Afghani...not unlike Cheese just being a unique Skunk#1 pheno...the best strains are not behind us, but ahead of us...haze is the way...jay;)

i have heard some pretty great things about Doc atomic's NL...tho i believe its not a pure indica as it was crossed over the years with something to increase (atleast in Doc's mind) the enjoyment of the high...i got a pack of his Blueberry NL that i will be doing on my next run and can't wait to find some nice indica pheno's hopefully for pain/sleep...i would buy Doc's gear cuz i don't see many bad reports about it...but then again there arent a lot of reports on his gear in general but most ppl are more than satisfied with their results from what i've gathered...and his Blueberry NL cross has been used at dispensaries so it could be some good stuff

EDIT: I just read Dr. Atomic's article and its very interesting but i don't take everyone on their word at first glance as i've read that Dr. Atomic doesn't use only the NL#5 in his crosses which may be what one of the two batches of NL he's pulls from (so maybe right now the closest NL#5 is doc atomic but at best i'd imagine its only 50% NL5 and then some other NL because the plants i've seen are not pure indica...but to be fair NL#5 is clone only so i'd imagine he's done his best to isolate the beloved NL traits he is so passionate about

The Medicine Man i have tried had that same type of kick ass total body numbing high the original NL had ---

but we still call the old school NL 'THE Indica'

Best of both worlds?

Please correct me, somebody, but didn't the original NL breeder (in Seattle, I believe) actually cross a sweet sweet Thai plant with an Afghani and then back cross to the Afghani several times?

This is why NL has such a well balanced high. It is not quite 100% indica.

I always found the early NLs kiss ass strong but they didn't nail me to the sofa. I could (and did) smoke it all day. Maybe the flavour could have been slightly more penetrating but it was sweet sweet sweet.

and Jay, - I know you only made that haze post to 'stir up the hornets nest' (something I know we both love to do..) and whilst I agree that Haze is the best daytime smoke, I find ,as a nightcap, it isn't so good. Also, it does absolutely NOTHING for my shoulder pain (which can be almost constant at times)

Whilst I find the Haze a perfect party smoke ('up up up' and it still stops my alcohol cravings) there are times when I want to relax and smoke 'down down down'. Whilst there are some lovely indicas on the market now, alot of them have a 'nail-you-to-the-sofa' quality about them, which I always hate.
I just found that NL had a perfect balance about it, even if it was a little powerful at times..

On the other hand, anyone who grew the original NL5/Haze (my favourite for years and years) probably thought of it as the best of both worlds....and that flavour. The first time I smoked it it just blew my mind. I hadn't tried anything like it for YEARS. I haven't tried the new Sensi Seeds version of NL5/Haze but I am convinced that it won't be the same. Anyone with any experience of it, please chime in!

I still want NL seeds and Early Northern Lights (for the garden). AND I want them from Neville. (It's lovely to write out your wishes - feels like creating a soccer Dream Team!) although to be fair, there are enough gems in the MNS catalogue to keep me happy for years anyway, NL or no NL!!! Nev - don't listen to me, you know what your doing...

No need for a correction, your right !

NL was originally developed by Indian Joe just outside of Seattle. The NL line was created by crossing Thai and a Afghani strain, and then backcrossing back to the Afghani parent (twice I suspect).88% Indica.

thanks for the confirm, Vortex.
Some people may not appreciate it but the history of our [sub]culture is important. Names like Indian Joe, Sandy Weinstein and Maple Leaf Wilson shouldn't be lost to time... and nor should a line like pure NL#5. What happens if Nev's cut loses vigor?

Hey guys :)
There is in fact no Thai genetics in the MNS Northern Lights actually, despite what has been previously reported.

Shanti and the crew are working on the Northern Lights line, and in fact have been doing so for a few years at least. Its not ready yet, otherwise I have to think Shanti would have released it with many of the other new lines that have made their way to the market thus far. If I was a gambling man, I would bet he isnt comfortable with where the line sits and is continuing to iron out a few things. Though honestly I have no direct knowledge of the breeding agenda of the MNS familia, I can only go on what has previously been discussed in the past. It could be since we're talking a prized, worked line that is literally responsible for a great deal of the varieties on the market today that NL will never make it to the market in a pure form. Only hybrids. A move I could appreciate and understand to be honest with you all.

I could ask a dozen questions easily over this variety, but the only one that counts is when can I have some seeds? lol

Ive been after Shanti on this for years, news of the initial work of the Northern Lights stock from 1988 a couple years ago now really got me excited. As this is one of a small handful of lines that drove me to come online and discover their source in the first place.

What I can tell you for absolute certainty is that MNS is without a doubt the place to come and get the real Northern Lights. In terms of breeding, marketing, distribution Nevil is directly responsible for this lines legendary status and he of course is part of the MNS team today. As are many of his lines, which are pillars of the industry.

all this talk about Northern Lights and i am going crazy to grow a good NL indica dom hybrid...so i am gonna soak my ten Berry Jam seeds tonight from Doc Atomic (BBxNL)...although its not from Shanti i hope to find a nice male to cross to my prized Aurora Indica female and bring a lil of a euphoria to its jaw dropping power...will be doing this with either Angel Heart of Critical Haze...i'm leaning toward the Critical Haze cuz i think it will be more indica but i've seen some very heavy leaning afghani plants from Angel heart and i'm torn...i am gonna let the Berry Jam germinate a week ahead of whatever Haze i choose so that it will compensate on veg..my only concern with the Angels are the occasional stretch SSH pheno but i can always tie em down...i can only germ 20 max and don't feel that 5 AH and 5 CH would be an accurate description of the strain potential so i gotta choose ten of one of em...maybe i'll do 7 of each as a compromise, i really can't decide as both AH and CH will have some SUPERB plants but i need a lil indica goodness as the indica jars are running low...darn Shanti your genetics are so good its hard to make a decision :)

Great info JessE - We'll just have to enjoy the rest of the catalogue whilst waiting for ol' NL to make her appearance. I'm sure that when it is ready we will know. If there is a test grow for that one I just KNOW Sarah will pull my name out of that hat, I'm just going to will it so hard!!!

Curious - your dilemma is hilarious and seems so familiar,somehow...so many nice seeds, which to choose? Go for as many from 1 variety in my opinion, you get a full spectrum of the variety's potential and are more likely to find that Afghani pheno in your angel heart seeds too! Good Luck!

As for Northern Lights? Cola Bro and I have found a female Northern Lights pheno in our mango haze plants - and it is one of mine... COME ON!:D
Short stocky plant, very little stretch, branches held in towards the stem somewhat, leaves slightly darker than the other mango hazes and she started to flower much quicker, too.
I have some cuttings from her (she was plant #8...) so I'll see how she goes...with any luck I'll have a superb, fruity, sweet NL mother on my hands...If not then I suppose I could always buy a couple of packs of Dreamtime and look for a NL pheno in there.

well i threw down ten Atomic Jam (NL x BB) and got 7 sprouts...four are performing nicely while the other three are extremely slow...put down some Ash (bout 5) 10 days after the Jam to accomodate for stretch and also 6 Afg. #1 which only 4 sprouted...so the MNS had 100%germ rates and others didn't come close...but got a nice lil variety of plants in the garden...the Afg. #1 is scaring me cuz the plants look so different, the leaves aren't very marijuana like but more rounded and they are very odd looking (maybe cuz its an IBL)...gonna throw some more Ash down to fill in the gaps of the poor looking plants and also the Afg #1's if they don't start looking more like a pot plant and less like an odd weed you'd find in the woods (but maybe thats the point i don't know lol)...i shoulda went with more Ash or some Devil instead of the Sensi Afg. they really are ugly plants lol
*Also the Doc seems unreliable at best regarding the NL in his hybrid...it says he uses NL#5 but also a NL from another source outside amsterdam so thats two different NL's he's combined and inbred together for years so in all actuality on paper the atomic jam is (NL5xNL?) x Blueberry so its only at best maybe 25%NL5 which could be found in a lot of the haze hybrids like SSH...maybe i shoulda went with some SSH and found that NL pheno that finishes quick that grover sativa has...but i will keep u updated on how Doc' Atomics hybrid turns out...i never used a canadian breeder before

hey curious - you must let me know about those Blue Jams. A slightly fruity twist on the juniper taste I love. The only thing is that Dr Atomic says that it adds a little interest to the NL high. Does that mean his pure NL has an uninteresting high?

An interesting point about his NL being a NL5/NL cross, although, to be fair to him, NL was bred in the states, well outside Amsterdam (no matter what the dutch may try to persuade you...) so he is within his rights to use an american version...

As for my Mango Haze - NL pheno....it smells a lot in flower (unlike pure NL) looks identical to a pure NL and NOTHING like the other Mango plants. The buds are fluffier than NL (as you would expect) and more interestingly coloured. They had a visible coating of resin glands from the first week of flowering. The resin is glistening and noticeable (good bag appeal for any commercialists out there) although the actual glands are smaller and more silver than pure NL which are bigger and whiter. The smell is fruity, for sure but not really mangoes, though. More metal lemon/bitter orange with a real sweet undertone. Unfortunately I can't smell any white pepper (haze) or juniper (NL). I think there may be juniper in the smoke but the smell is being surpressed somewhat by the sweet fruitiness. Its on week 6 and to be honest, I could start thinking about cutting it now. In fact, the last water was pure RO, so I may stick it out in the cold greenhouse to finish it off quick as I need the space indoors (the haze pheno Mango is spreading beyond all control and my love is now with her - I'm fickle like that - and at this time of year overcrowding plants is a no no no no no for mould reasons. Besides I have the momma from mrs NL pheno in the veg room so job is already done..)

I'll give you a quick smoke report on mrs NL pheno as soon as I can.
