mate i didn't even read your hole post but skunk man is dead wrong on this and if you reamber over at icmag i had this same discussion with sam and he basically sed i was full of shit well i grew out a Thia as i did at cw and guess what the female Thia plant each grow stayed as a female and never showed one male flower.

The guy from i think its the real seed co who traveled threw Thailand spoke to the farmers/growers they also told him the same thing i have been saying on line about Thia for years they do not Hermie repeat for all reading this they do not Hermie once they have been sexed and are female.

Sativas if there going to show hermies they will at sexing Thias like a few other pure sativa lines only ever showed hermaphrodites at sexing thats it once you culled them and the females and males were sexed they stayed as female or males.

How many seeds did you guys ever see in Thia sticks in the 70s and 80s ? not many if any at all.

I'd have to dig up some research to get the dates, but from memory, the last time authentic Thai sticks were exported was 82-83. My memory is a little clearer on the Mexican situation, they had lost almost all of their original genes by 1980 because there was a huge DEA case in 79-82 where they bust the biggest druglord in Mexico, the head of the Sinaloa cartel. I have a few pages of notes about it, but basically, the DEA had been so successful at wiping out the traditional Marijuana cultivation that the Sinaloa cartel had sunk millions into setting up two new, huge and sophisticated irrigated grows in remote parts, one was in the Sinaloa desert where nothing would grow unless irrigated. The mere fact that they had to go to those lengths to carry on cultivating shows you that what was there before that was destroyed. So if you want authentic Mexican genes these days you need something that was collected prior to 1980 or you have to get off the beaten track in Mexico and hope to get lucky like Bodhi did in Zipolite last year.

The same things that happened in Mexico also happened in Thailand - the govt with US help destroyed so much of the cultivation (and figures of deaths of farmers are in the 30-50 THOUSAND range) that by the early 80s, the govt of Thaksin Shinawatra could claim to have stopped all largescale cultivation. Some did continue but only in the north and west near the borders where criminal gangs have control, mirroring what happened in Sinaloa.

So if we are talking true Thai genes, I think they have to have been collected before 1980 to be authentic.

On the hermie thing, I've grown maybe 100 'Thai' plants from seeds, and I expect they were all from the 90s apart from one lot I know was collected in 1988 by a friend on honeymoon. I reckon the breakdown of percentages ran something along these lines - 80% hermies or freaks, 15% females, 5% males. Of the 80% wierdos, maybe half hermied early on when they had just shown sex, but the other half hermied after a few weeks in flower, some as late as 14-16 weeks of a 18-20 week cycle. I've seen a 'Thai' female at 16 weeks suddenly grow a male branch out of the top of her cola, I've seen a female at 12 weeks suddenly grow yellow single stamen male flowers out of the ends of her calyxes overnight.

I think this is all down to the disruption and chaos of the 80s and 90s in Thailand, when they were machine-gunning poor farmers and burning villages that farmed the weed. People just didn't find the same problems with wierd retarded plants in the original Thai genepool because the farmers had studiously and carefully maintained their lines.

Hempy mate, you have been lucky with your Thais, but I think that is down to you having access to much older Thai stock than most of us. I would love to see someone do a side-by-side with an original Thai collected by the Diggers in the late 60s while Australia was still in Vietnam fighting with the Yanks and a modern Thai line collected from recent exports. I expect they would be broadly similar to a degree but would have large differences too, primarily, the modern one would be a mess requiring a ton of selection pressure to find anything worthwhile. It took me several years and a lot of wasted efforts to finally find a suitable Thai female to breed with, the two reasons that it took so long were firstly, the large number of plants that were retards in some way and never even made it to flower and secondly most of the females turned ladyboy at some point in flowering.

apologies to kanga for discussing thai sticks ,
hope its not too off topic ??

I have to agree with bh on the time line with the thai seed ,, perhaps hempys seed came from earlier times before the hermie days were so prevalent ,,

given thousands of us have had a similar experience thats all it could be put down too ..

my father in law was in the thai army during the eradication days ,
alas he wasnt on the side we would have been ,, lol ..
he still has a neat scar on his chest from being shot ...
so i have a pretty good idea where they were growing large amounts ..

i have friends still living there ,, they say seed is hard to come across of anything decent , but occasionally you might get lucky , rare though ..

golden thai
,, man i can still remember the taste , one of my all time faves ,, definately in the top 3 of all time for me ...
wonder what the diff was between that and the browner stuff ,,
different strain ,, different climate where it was grown ,, mmm ???

La Nina is a Mullumbimby Madness x White Widow hybrid.

Put me on the list to test the Mm and Oax when they are ready! hehe

Yes, an older gent, a very nice and knowledgeable guy, though occasionally prone to hyperbole (could be me:)) He is the source of a number of rare sativa strains which are on the market. His Uncle was the original keeper of OMS, but passed it on to him in the 70s. He in turn passed it on to many locally and internationally.

I acquired around 40 seeds.

In reality these are probably pretty low on Kanga + Nev's list of priorities at the moment. Nev is so taken with MM (soaring trippiness) and Oaxacan (incredible taste and positive vibe) that he may not want to look any further than to focus his energies on those. Plus the OMS is said to need selection work due to neglect and the potential presence of hermies. Plus many people have contributed other seed lines which need investigating.

But in time I'm sure they will turn their attention to OMS and see what they can find.

Thanks for sharing mate. It all sounds great

Hi mate, thanks for the Nevil's Skunk. I can see where the term "roadkill" comes from:p Very interesting and pungent aroma, similar to Mango Haze with overtones of rotting meat - phew! - and some strong cerebral smoke too. So is this Skunk1 or did Nevil breed some Afghan T or something into it? I think it would be a great match for one of your pure sativas, to add that little extra zing that hits the high notes in the upper stratosphere, because all the bass notes are there.

Now I'm really looking forward to see what all the rest of Nev and Shanti's gear tastes like, especially given your special attention and care. Do you mind giving a rundown of your drying/curing practice? Thanks mate.

First of all the Thai's......out of 30 plants, I had 1 that hermied and that was predomantly female and they were all stress tested. I also only had 5 males, so it looks as if all will be ok, but you can be sure they will be looked at very well.
These Thais and laos are only being looked at for breeding purposes only and I will do that over the next 3 yrs.

Hey Bushy glad you liked it....I have the other one ready now, although i do believe that they could go longer on the curing time.
Hey mate I have already crossed them to the Oaxacan and have clones to cross to a few other things, once they are sorted:D
I forgot to ask Nev on its makeup.....next time:D

As for drying I hang them Cola length in a darken room and dry them at about 21c for 4 days then I store them away in a dark container checking them every couple of days until I am sure that I can seal the container and then store them in a cool dark place.......As you know and Nev can also vouch that the Sats are more potent when stored for a long time and still do not loose any taste or smell if stored well.

Some more pics.....I have also included the Ortega.

Good one mate, that Skunk is pungent and potent. Be interesting to see how she stakes up against the Ortega. I had to dry a couple of Nimbin Purple sat branches a few weeks back - I'd say 4 weeks immature - I smoked some yesterday...woowee!! there's some strong trippy genes in there:D Didn't taste as nice as the Skunk, but more sativa leaning so as you say...needs a longer cure.

That big Nev's Haze looks like she can hold her own in a garden!! Well done mate.

Look bloody lovely they do Bushweed well done mate. Hi Kanga Hope your well mate.

Keep up the great work Kanga and Bushy!!!!! Geezuz the Nevs Haze and the Mango Haze seem to do well here dont they ? How does the Super Silver Haze go up here fellas? As good as the other Haze crosses? To my eyes the Ortega looks soooooo Indica. Hope it survives the rain and the mould . Which Mister Nice mainly Indica strain is easier to grow outdoors in a humid sub tropical climate like ours as far as speed , vigour, size and pest resistance ( especially botrytis) go? The Nevs Skunk , The Ortega or the Nordle ? Cheers Fellas. Great work!

Hi mate.....Yeah it seems as if all the MNS haze+ strains do well. I really like the SSH and have some very nice Pheno's of this strain, where as the NH and MH seem to be all similar. Although I did have a very early flowering MH, in fact it has actually finished.
It has been a very hard season for anything Indica and this last week has been devastating on most things as we just had 3 days of non stop rain.
So it's hard for me to say what is the best, but at the moment I would go Nevs Skunk as it does not get such a big head as the others and is a bit more solider. Bit more protected from catapillar attack as well.
Stay well mate and thanx for all.

Look bloody lovely they do Bushweed well done mate. Hi Kanga Hope your well mate.

Thanx mate.....yeah I am well, although I wasnt to good a few days ago after I checked everything.....bloody rain:mad:
Oh well as Wal knows and I am sure Bushy does as well.....outdoor growing definetly has its high's and low's......now if we have a nice dry autum finish like normal, it will be a nice high in more ways than one:D

Hi mate spot on about the indica strong hybrids in this shitty weather. I just checked my plants and along with the ubiquitous snapped branches, one of the Nimbin Purples basically resembled shit on a stick. consequently have had to chop alot off that still needed some weeks in the Sun. Oh well as you say, hopefully a dry end for the sativas. Next year will all be indoors:D How's that SSH you thought was the queen of the crop?

Yeah mate I thought that would be the case, got a bit the same prob with those Fets.....I am still impressed by the Ghana and Shanti's Mazar as these had no mold at all and that Maz was lying down.
The SSH is looking unreal and after that rain and now 2 days of sunshine she is glistening:D
That MM x Skunk and JBM went down and squashed the BW:eek:, both of them are ok, but the BW was pronunced dead on recovery.
Anyway mate if you go indoors I will stay outdoors.....Lol

Too true kanga ,, anything that makes it through this year well is very hardy .
Ive had a bunch of stem rot since the cyclone , but the surviving sativas are looking ok , some pretty good ..
Toking an early one now , it had 500 mm dumped on it the week i picked it , but boy its some good stuff , no tolerance build up and no ceiling ,
ill get some pics next time for sure ..

Ill be enjoying watching your finish and hoping for a dry one man ..

Hi ya Hempy......yeah mate it was pretty bad, although it wasnt the same rain that hit the South Coast. But it was 3 days of that nice soaking rain intermittent with a few heavy showers, just the stuff you luv at spring but not during heading time.....I did know it was coming and managed to prepare a fair bit which helped, but still caterpillar shit and rain dont go well together:(

Hey Wal, thanx mate, I have everything crossed for a nice finish. I do hear that it is going to settle a bit now and we have been getting Westerlies starting as well, that will dry things out and also take away the humidity and dew.
Hey mate glad to hear you managed to get something out of your deluge. As I said I think water cress would have been a better option for you guys up there:D
Ok mate all the best for winter......oh by the way I will have some Female/Male percentages for you shortly and this will be with back up....lol

funny actually , i was getting mould already with all the rain ,
but then the sun came out ,,
man more mould than ever ,,, really prolific with the humidity ..

as you said though kanga , its generally around areas where caterpillers have attacked , or closer to the ground ...

hi great grow truly motivating. a quick question how big/ tall would u estimate say ssh or any other sativa dom plant to grow if grown with a maximum of about 12-13hrs of day light growing from seed. i ask this as were i live the photo period doesnt go past 13hrs.

Hi Iron.....I would put most of MNS hazes to go around the 10-15ft mark, depending on the growing medium/soil.
If you have a long flowering period then all the better as they can all be pushed to get the best results.

Mould, I hate that stuff. I agree with Wally, always seems to attack where there has been some damage to the pant. Where I live it rains so much I often have to run a dehumidifier indoors. I try to avoid growing large colas because of the mould problem, seen so many that moulded in the middle, so I try to grow plants with 3-4 smaller colas instead of 1 fat one.
