Why is Shanti's Skunk/Haze not more celebrated? It is about celebrity (SSH/Nev's Haze), cult (Mango Haze) and history (La Niña) but Skunk Haze is better than any of those pretenders to the crown. The odd think is that Shanti spends so much time re-crossing haze hybrids (with NL in them) back to pure hazes or Haze AC (nearly pure hazes) in order to cut down the indica whilst keeping the practicality but he has always had exactly that right here in the Skunk Haze - almost pure sativa in a practical wrapping (once you select, that is..)
If you love Haze and getting high from it - but don't like the sleepy negative downer vibes of Northern Lights.... if you love the super euphoric first spliff of the Mango Haze .... but hate the punishment you get after spliff no 2 (bedtime..) then you should know that Skunk/Haze is the one for you..
If you know me then you know that Skunk/Haze is the one for me!
Different Hazes - there are different hazes out there - different breeders try to create their own 'lines' of hazes... and I've tried them all... the very best line is Sam's Original Haze (O.Haze) of which A and C are two very very fine examples.
Different Skunks - there are many different skunks out there. Some are heavy indicas (especially today) and some are very sweet. The original Skunk 1 was a hybrid of Colombian and Mexican sativas and an Afghan Indica. It was 25% Afghan (genetically) but phenotypes ranged from very sativa to much more Afghani. It's all about selection. The skunk used in this Skunk/Haze is very much of the 25% Afghan 75% American Sativa Skunk type... normal, for the time (Skunk/Haze is an old cross) and so ....
Different Skunk/Hazes - there are many different Skunk/Haze hybrids. 2 of the best - Fumar Con Dios and Fumar Con Diablo (apologise for spelling errors) are no longer available, which is a tragedy. Shanti's Skunk/Haze still is, (so buy it now, while you can!) and genetically speaking, Skunk/Haze SHOULD be : Skunk (25% Indica/75% Sativa) x Haze (100% Sativa) so .... 12.5% Afghan Indica and 87.5% Pure Sativa (mostly tropical) and Shanti's Skunk/Haze very much follows that shape. It's roughly 90% sativa ON AVERAGE - and that means that you can find some extreme sativas in there - I mean 20 week hazes... and there are some ( a few) much quicker, shorter plants, too 10 weekers - BUT these are not indicas with a sativa edge... these are sativas with no vigour. The arms are floppy and the yields are small. The flowers are sweet and lovely and worth having but don't keep these. Similarly, the 17+ weekers - these are lovely, tropical sativas. Hazes, in fact and they STINK. It's worth growing them out but DON'T KEEP THESE either.... the bud is lovely but not any nicer than the keeper phenotype and the plants are unbelievably unsuitable for indoor growing. 10 feet or more. Huge long, looping arms with multitudes of fluffy buds along them. extreme stickiness and stinkyness They are special but completely impractical.... but ..... if you are lucky.... you will find THAT ONE... they are rare and I wouldn't be surprised if you went through a pack and didn't find one but ..the tall sativa that actually starts and actually finishes, whose buds are long but full, (each calyx fat and swollen and sticky), whose flowers stink to high heaven of sweet strawberries, wildflowers, honey and pure electricity.... the one which just looks, smells and grow amazingly, the one that looks like the keeper Super Silver Haze or even more like the keeper Mango Haze but DOESN'T HAVE ANY NORTHERN LIGHTS IN IT!!!
Well, you've found one of your best ever plants.
Mine is in my top 3 - the Super Silver Haze I had, and the best Mango Haze I had (I've had a few...) are only 4 and 5..... it's up there with the shocking, shocking Cheese I found in a handful of regular seeds that Big Buddha gave me in Amsterdam (he never released them, only the fems. - what a shame...) one of those plants was so strong that you couldn't finish a joint without forgetting your name. You couldn't hold a conversation because you couldn't remember how you had started a sentence by the time you finished it and so just spoke shit. My wife would cry when I smoked it and told me she would leave me unless I ditched it. The yields were stupid large, too. And it stank. It was just vigour in every single respect. Never grew anything like it before or since. I made a mistake not keeping that plant, looking back... there are plenty of wives but only one Grover's Cheese... and the Stinky Widow.....I'll never forgive my brother for losing that clone. I only asked him to look after it while I was away for a couple of months. lazy cunt.
I have some photos somewhere... I apologise for the quality - especially of the keeper - it was hanging up and I only got a few of the smaller buds in the photos... I took them all with my phone and not my camera and the CBM x Iraqi Babylon is well out of focus!
The keeper Skunk Haze is about 12-14 weeks (depends if you go with the reflowing or not. I always do. there are maybe 2 periods of reflowing after the main show, so be patient...) and I would say it is about 90% sativa. It is a true haze. It STINKS of very very sweet berries (not quite strawberries but very close) and fragrant wildflowers and also has a real electric haze aroma about it. It is a bit like a cross between Hubba Bubba and lightening. Full on resin from very early in flowering, right down the stems and full on aroma, too. It very much reminds me of a keeper Mango Haze in its look (but with a better colour and a brighter, less sickly sweetness.) It will be the new basis for many of my crosses from now on (if I do many, that is...I'm more into my motorbike, fruit growing in my orchard/vineyard and wine/cyder making atm - but I still grow.)
I should say that I have been diagnosed with ADHD / Autism - and I use cannabis to medicate. The sleepy side actually goes against what I want so I mostly smoke sativas in the day but I can't be buzzing off my head all day, so I don't smoke haze as an all-day situation... at all. I use nice calm sativa based hybrids that taste great.. Skunk Haze is borne of complete craziness - especially when you have a plant like "Hubba-Bubba-Haze" (I just made that up right there!) A keeper Skunk/Haze is the ultimate in taste and high and it doesn't make you sleepy at all. It does make you crazy, though - easy on the medication. It is for the weekend.
Hubba-Bubba-Haze will be in the top 3 best tasting, most euphoric, best and just craziest cannabis I've ever grown. Go find yourself a keeper that challenges that claim!
So here is the concise:
average 87.5% sativa. some crazy 18+ weekers and some 10/11 weekers, too. Ditch all those. The plants will all be around the centre of very hazey sativas. If you're looking for an indica leaning haze - look elsewhere. The smells are very pungent and around the centre of very sweet berry/ fragrant and lovely wildflowers/ joyous haze zest. There is no sickly sweetness (like mango)/pepper/leather/catpiss/soap (like SSH). The aromas are bright, sweet and lovely.
From experience of past grow of this strain...(and not from THIS grow, please note..) Tastes will be similar. Highs crazy, cerebral, expansive, euphoric, no ceiling, no burnout.
Opinion: Shanti's best strain. Forget SSH or Mango Haze - ditch the burnout. Very tropical sativa feel. Glorious yields, aromas, resin, highs and flavours.
Tip for growing the Keeper: Just like the Mango Haze, the true quality is in the tops - so prune accordingly. SOG/SCROG/Multibranch plant, etc... lots of tops. I used All-Mix soil and organic feed (biobizz sort of thing) I worked up to 3ml/litre of grow and 6ml/litre of bloom with every water. There were no issue with over fertilisation at all. In fact 4 fan leaves had just started to go yellow by the time I harvested, so the All-Mix was becoming No-mix.... but I also tailed off the grow with 2 weeks to go (and completely by the last week) The dry is slow and the cure is 4-6 months, I'm afraid. Sorry. You should make berry wines - they're 2 years in the bottle the way I do it!!!
Enjoy!
