I can't remember being this excited....

and for a quick report.....

plant 1) this girl is the most Critical Mass and least Afghan Haze. Her nugs are FAT and FIRM and she smells fruity with citrus and berries. She has frost. This plant was the 1 which didn't like being starved of Nitrogen. Her leaves started to go a bit yellow. She has a medium to powerful aroma which is very pleasant indeed. Her arms are longish are weigh down with the weight of the nugs.
Her flowers are actually starting to mature and I would say that she will be reasy in about 2 weeks, which makes her the quickest at about 7.5 weeks from first flower (remember that she is a seedling.) The yield is very good but could be superb if she could go on another 4 weeks - but she won't. Perhaps the lack of N has stressed her a little into a slightly early finish? I don't think so, though.

plant 2) only disappointing because the other 4 are so damn good. Nothing wrong, though. Great smell, as plant (1) but slightly less pungent. Slightly skunky shaped large buds. No cola just large buds. Just a whisper of orange hairs here or there, so 3 weeks more, minimum.

plant 3) the first 'hazier' plant. Not really hazy but a little less dense in structure and more elegant, longer, creamier stigma. Large cola. Large buds. Great to superb yielder with great vigour. Not a single orange hair or swollen bract so who knows how much longer this girl will go? Same smell but the least pungent of all the girls, though still a delight. Possible undertones of pepper.

plant 4) The monster. Tall, vigorous, huge cola, massive yield. Stinky bitch. Lovely fruity, citrus orangey smell with a real berry bottom, not unlike Ribena (blackcurrent squash.) Pervasive smell. A very Critical Mass - like plant with short hairs and fat resin calyxes and glands. Starting to mature now, maybe another 3 weeks or so, taking it to 9 weeks.

plant 5) Initially the runt, she has blossomed into a beautiful plant. Not a runt but just younger by a week - because she is the haziest girl she took longer to start so her buds initially looked smaller by comparison. Not any more! Whereas some of the other girls have started to mature this lady just keeps piling on the pistils. She is developing a great middle cola and some some satellite cola-ettes going on too.
Added to all this is her smell. Unique amongst the 5 girls, she has absolutely no berry smell whatsoever but is all sweet sweet lemon metallic, like a real old school Afghani plant, with definite white pepper undertones but sweet - not at all sour. The aroma is so alluring I can't stop sniffing this girl. It may be one of the best smelling plants I have ever come across, no joke. The stenchiness is very high, this girl's aroma is not subtle at all. You can smell her above the other plants in the room (maybe except plant (4)). Her flowers are perfect pyramids almost sharp at the points! They pile on creamy long stigmas daily with no sign of abatement at all. She is the shortest of all the plants (amazingly) and the only girl sturdy enough to carry her own flowers without bending - even though her flowers are as big or bigger than all the others. This is because there is slightly less lumber with her.
Her resin is sticky and sticks to the end of my big nostrils whenever my sniffs get a fraction too close!!!
She has given me no jip at all, even through the Nitrogen drought, the P/K drought and the RO algae and just keeps going through it all.

I am praying that she is a good smoke as she has all the attributes needed to be a killer mum. When I look at her next to my Mango Haze cut, which went in the same day, there is no comparison - it is like a woman versus a little girl in terms of size and just as alluring (if not more so) in terms of smell. The Mango Haze's flowers just look tiny and light-weight next to this girl's blooms.

I have an ASH grow and a MasterKaze grow coming through but all I can think of is getting a garden full of cuttings from this baby and seeing what they can REALLY do, once I'm dialled in. Mind boggling grow so far. The ASH and MKaze better be REAL good to follow this plant (I'm sure they will..)

Conclusions - like I said, these girls don't like too much N but give them maybe a half dose or a one third dose for the first 4 or 5 weeks of flower to prevent yellowing if you are using a Light-Mix soil, like myself.
Overfeeding these girls won't make them hermie but might make them burn or slow them down. They don't need it.
I haven't used mollasses and the plants still smell so so sweet. I'll experiment further with carb-loading when I come back to this cross in the future (no doubt with plant (5) cuttings.. ) but they don't seem to need it.
I can see why this cross has 5 Howards out of 5 for aroma. It is unbelievable.
I just can't wait to cure and smoke these fruity nugs of joyous wonder.

Hi Grover Sativa

nice to see you found the root of the problem with the hermis. Its really good to hear that there are no more nanners growing.

Stress will cause hermis , tiny light leaks , any interruptions during the dark cycle , extreme temps , nute/ph/pest issues can all be the cause.

As for the heavy flowers on branches , there is not much you can do really now other than tie em so they are not falling over but when you run plants next time make sure they have a strong fan blowing at them so the main stem and branches will become/grow harder.

Glad things are back to normal and all grow nicely. Thank you for the description of the phenos , I can't wait to hear how you find the smoke when all are harvested and cured.

Hi L33t,

Thanks for taking the time for the read!

I'm glad you enjoyed the pheno descriptions - I know I go on a bit but I'm fascinated by these plants and really enjoying them.

Yes, a gently sway will definitely strengthen up the branches. I used to grab the stems gently between my index and middle fingers and shake the plants. This really chunked up the stem but I leave things alone a lot more these days.

I think I mentioned right at the start of the thread that I suspected this variety may need a study framework in order to hold the bubs and I was spot on!

Next time I may prune more branches off the stem and concentrate more on the main colas. The colas are really impressive. I'll possibly even put an extra plant or two in there as a result. I bet I'd end up with a higher yield, too.

The thing with these is that they are so vigorous in growth and flower that they can really get away from you! It's a 'problem' I want with every grow. :)

Still, using cuts next time instead of seed will help as they tend to be a little quicker to harden up, maybe.

I'm going to mention the smell again. It's unusually wonderful and worth banging on about. 10/10. Strong but so pleasant.

Plant #5 or #3 are looking like one of them may be the one for my greenhouse this summer - let's see how each performs in the smoke test first (I'm SURE they'll both be great...#5 stinks more and has THAT smell.. ) though I've heard that ASH (the grow that's to come) can be a winner in the greenhouse too. Maybe I'll just buy another greenhouse and try them both!

hey groover,
how are you??
pics look great:)... cracking descriptions too..
need to get my update together for this week..
Been on the piss since then so will try and remember what was what, lol
great job so far tho mate, glad you got past the hermi prob..
did you cut all the drugs now mate?
peace and love
BL

thanks mate.
yes, I stopped taking them as soon as I could. They really fucked me up - mood swings were terrible. I feel much better now.

I'm soo glad I worked out those hermies, too

good show mate glade you feeling better!
so you think it was the RO filter then??
My grow doest need 1 where it is, great quality tap water, but when I get local again 1 is deff needed, a cup of tea from the local water tastes like shit a lot of the time..
we gonna see you for GROW 2010 in manchester, I think cola bro is up for it
Peace

Mr. Sativa,

Keep posting those pictures brother. So your plant 5 is the mash up set, eh...

Your ealier descriptions got me excited to think about my young ones which are coming along nicely.

Looking forward to your harvest.

I hope you are well,

Peace brother,

Chana

Hey BL - I'm sure it was the filter. It could only have been the water, nutes, soil, air or light.

To be honest I did suspect the filter almost as soon as I saw a problem but it is best to change just 1 thing at a time....

Thanks for the good wishes, I'm sure I'll chip up to Madchester with lil' bro. See you there! (I used to live in Manchester for over a year. Interesting place, good fun but scarey!)

Chana, nice to hear from you. What you been up to?

Plant 5 is looking and smelling like a keeper but I'm letting plant 3 give her some competition on the next run with these. They are the 2 longest flowering of all of the plants. The CM side are also very impressive but I was just looking for a little more haze in the mix...I have some Master Kaze coming for an indica lick (I know you love the Master Kush flava, too  )

Anyways, thanks dude, I am well - I hope the same counts for you too (both of you)

Chana - when you flip your plants, they will grow.

I know you are a hydro man but for anyone growing these in soil - you want a sturdy frame to hold fat colas and a strong water transport to fuel the massive growth. Don't confine them! (or as Danny Danko put it in this month's High Times) :

"more roots, more fruits"

:)

fukin stinks as well ...one of em:D

what ones do I have? Iv got no idea...hang on there are only two keepers an iv gotem both...? must have the stinky one then...:)

you've got stinkster and the long-flowering yield monster (photos to follow)

I figure yield monster is the haziest as she is the longest flowering by far and has the fluffiest bud structure (still quite tight, though..)

Good luck with them. You'll love 'em both.

Good show GS,

Got to ask about 64, 68 and 69. Is 64 the all around or half skunk half haze. Also hot tall are the three? I asked this in your Mango Haze thread, but how long did you veg. None of these are clone right grov? You are flower the F1 seed straight out right? Also, which one are you keeping and last one, did you pull a male.

Thank you,

Chana mas

Hey Chana,

Sorry - I've been addicted to FIFA 10 on my XBOX!

Yes, these are the seedlings, not clones. I took cuts from them for mommas.

Usually I prefer to keep the seedlings as mommas and just flower cuts but sometimes it doesn't work out that way...

I'm keeping the 2 longest flowering ones because these will be the ones with the most Haze in them. Also, the longer flowering ones are bigger, yield wise.

I really only want 1 of them - plant #3 (I know, it's changed so many times...)
Its the longest flowering (still in the garden, in fact) and by FAR the biggest (it's HUGE) I haven't posted pics of it yet but I will soon. They all smell nice so that's OK (all except skunky one which is not as fruity.)

I had 8 males and 8 females from the pack but only went with the strongest 5 females in the end.

One of the early flowerers on the CM side was quite impressive and is a great smoke but that side has too much indica 'knock out' for me, hence choosing the longest flowering ones.

At the moment I'm keeping plant #5 because of the smell and because it has a bit more haze than the CM side but I only want it as a bit of competition for the real keeper (plant #3). It's always better to choose the best 2 or 3 and make a final choice after a second grow

I like plant #3 best because of the HUGE yield and haziness and unless plant #5 is a motherfukka of a smoke I'll end up going with #3 after the second run. You'll see why when I post a pic or 2..

64/68 and 69 are all nugs from plant#5. The middle pheno, I suppose. You can see that the flower structure is not as dense as the more indica phenos. It is a beautiful flower and wonderful smell, even if the yield isn't that of #3...

I vegged for about 5 weeks (ie from the sprout's first appearance to 12/12) and the ladies ended up at between 5 and 6 feet tall and pretty wide too. The yields varied quite a lot, with the skunky one being the smallest yielding but strongest smoking so far... The flowering times for the seedlings is between 8 weeks and the last one has been in for 10 weeks so far and still has some to go..

The highs of the 8 weekers (so far, anyway - curing is ongoing..) is strong indica medicinal but with a laid back hazey breeze coming through. Taste is grapefruit and other stuff not yet identified (meat?) Overall a very Californian style indica smoke, on the Critical Mass side, anyway. I haven't smoked ANY on the Afghan Haze side yet...

I killed all the males but I found a seed in the impressive indica flower, which you are welcome to if you want it. It will be from a hermie, though. I generally only use F1s and Shanti makes them better than me!! I do have 'breeding projects' for fun every now and again, though but I would use the female of this variety, anyway, not the male...I just wouldn't trust my selection of a male from such a complicated hybrid..

I'll drop you an e-mail tomorrow

Take Care

With my eye, I spied, plant 5 eh! Same plant. Seriously. We all have our favourites I guess. Just really excited about the longer strain for head stash though. Cant wait to see 3.

GS, on the sative/haze side what is the width. I am doing less plants in flower now from 40 to 16 and just vegging longer. I am telling you man, never grew a sative right out before. It was always about cash cropping until the last year or so... what I am basically asking is how many Haze pheno's could I spread out under 2k. I dont need to crame it in, would like to approach the flower out process in a natural way and tree like, and use the bm if I cant bend to lower vertical growth. I have 16 MK's, MK x Diesal and Sativa Hybrid from SOL that I am vegging hard like close to three months, next one is going to be MNS almost all the way. So I will have to give it a good go around and learn from you :)

My CMs expressed sex in mid February and I think I got 6 fems out of 8 seeds. Two I am not quite sure yet. Could be male though. Post when the tree are a little bigger. I kept them growing very slowly but they should be coming along shortly. I think by doing that I lost a month (got to manage the current cycle though).

You are a good cat for sure, I wil accept, but you must take something in return from me. Phuket, Thailand circa March 2005, I call it Tsunami (landrace sativa); work for you :) I wonder what Shanti thinks about growers/breeders inbreeding his genetics. IMO, I think it is fine as long as it is not used as a base strain for a grower/breeder to profit on by feming it or selling Shanti genes in another package.

Dont worry about throwing your males out. I am sure I will have one shortly could you need a cut or maybe I would just send you the pollen.

Good looking out, I do appreicate your thought out response once again. I am learning a lot from Mr. Sativa himself, true to the your name sake.

Peace G,

Channor O'Connnor
