This might sound crazy, but the solution I found to my insomnia was to sleep on top of all my bedsheets and comforter, and use a fleece blanket as my actual single bedsheet/blanket (maybe double up on the fleece in especially cold conditions). I also use a blanket as a headrest instead of a pillow. In my instance, I think it was the fact that the comforter was trapping my body heat in that pocket between the bedsheets/comforter and the mattress, and the heat didn't have a ready means of escape. I guess it was building up to the point that it would wake me up, because the common sensation during my bouts w/ insomnia was that of waking up overly warm, immediately needing a cold glass of water to drink and splash on my face. Hope this is useful to somebody :)

# - you do have THE best name on this forum, keep it up

Mr Butta (J.B./Jay/butt maker of jays)

Honestly

get yourself pretty much any decent mattress (spend that hard earned, third of your life on it). I dont think the frame makes much difference.

The mattress I have is a sleepeezee pocket 800 (?) costing around £300gbp

For me it was THE difference. All those years on shitty old and cheap, didnt think it made much difference. How wrong was I.... over nite I realised because i actually slept.

The thing is that once you start to sleep better almost everything else seems to fall into place.
your diet will improve as your self confidence, self esteem, concentration and general fitness improve. You will probably get higher from less because you are now clear headed and not groggy. - you may also increase your IQ and life span.
The difference it has made for me is remarkable.

Dude, it was the best money I have spent in years.

You never heard of a mattress curing insomnia? You have now.

hope this helps anyone out there. including you jay (both, jp and jb)

Ya I need a new bed. I know how much difference that makes. But they are pricey. I been shopping around for awhile. Looks like between 1500 and 2500 usd for what I need. Money well spent indeed. Especially with my fucked up neck. I wake up alot from the discomfort. Gotta move, then its hard to get back to sleep. I like the CM, actually I like it alot, but I want something a bit stronger sometimes for bedtime. Just knock me the fuck out! I grew a skunk nl5 cross for a few years and I wish I still had it. Dick in the dirt sleep like a baby strong. I believe the MM will fix that when its released. But thats for bedtime.

You talked me into the SSH. Its been on my short list for quite a while. Thing is its best for me to work one new strain into my garden at a time. Find a mom and then start with the next strain. I have a tendency to bite off more then I can chew, sometimes with disastrous results. I'll get SSH along with MM as soon as the MM comes avail. I think with those 3 in my Med box I should be happy and rested all the time! Sure why not... I like to read and indicas make me stupid. I love them but I swear I cannot retain anything on a good indi. Read the same page 3 times lol. I could see me growing 3 or 4 strains at a time or at least keeping mothers from them and taking clones from whomever whenever accordingly.

You guys rock! Thanks for all the words. JP

I think this might help too. Found em on ebay. $59 US for the 4 bags and $150 for the 5 gallon machine. Free to ship. 200 bucks.

Micron sizes 220.120,73,20

and this..

The Bubble Made Easy machine mixes your herbs and has a timer to adjust your mixing time to your desired setting. We suggest 15 minutes, you may mix for a shorter period for the first run for premium quality plant extract. The machine comes with a 220 micron extra strong zipper bag shaped specifically for the Bubble Made Easy machine. The bag allows the plant matter movement in the bag allowing the crystals to fall off easily. Fill the bag with your frozen plant material, approx. 200 grams of dried plant matter at a time or up to 500 grams of wet plant matter. Do not use stems as they will damage your bag. Fill the bag with ice and the Bubble Made Easy machine with water, put the timer on and sit back and let the machine do the work. Once finished drain the water extract from the machine using the drain hose and run through your bubble bags and enjoy. We also include instructions with each lit.

good input jp

tbh, got a set of bags for £70gbp n grover sourced exactly the right size and shape mixing buckets with lids for £5 each. We got three n some smaller tubs for handiness. With a hole in the middle of one lid, we use a drill with a paint or plaster mixing drill bit. The whole kit is littlke more expensive than the bags themselves, but we have three buckets to use (from one to the other).

I think the washing machine vibe is cool, but we're on a bit more of an industrial tip (replacement equipment is really cheap now - except the bags!).

cb

ps I read with a joint in the asher sometimes, but I really dont find it adds anything. I also get stoned just b4 I gotobed sometimes, but again, donty think it adds any. If your really into it try breathing exercises or position meditation, it helps anxiety and stress which are the most common causes of insomnia. you could also try yoga but I think its a bit more involved...

OK - back to the Critical Hazes.....

Shanti has PM'd me a few times concerning this grow and any small problems I was having...having described my environment to him and implemented the tiny changes he advised I am pleased to say that I have had no more problems whatsoever with these plants. In fact, quite the opposite. These plants are stunning. All are starting to smell now and, to be sure, the neighbour's going to know another fine crop is on its way to his lungs...

I'm just starting to make out 3 distinct phenos, with some interplay between the 3 and some small variation between plants of the same pheno.
All seem to have the same fruity/dank smell to them but some with undertones of white pepper and at differing strengths.

Pheno 1 - Afghan or indica pheno (Critical Mass pheno) Shortish, stout, a bit bushy. Fattest dense 'nugs'. Strongest smelling - fruity/dense/dank.

Pheno 2 - 'Skunky' pheno. Kind of like pheno 1 but with extra skunk. The tallest, stretchiest, most vigorous pheno. Smell as pheno 1 but a little lighter and with pepper undertones and a slight zest. Grows colas, not nugs. Potentially HUGE yields from this pheno. I invisage finding a keeper amongst this pheno. Lovely.

Pheno 3 - 'Hazier' pheno. Kind of like pheno 1 but with extra haze. Strangely not the tallest pheno of the 3 (that is reserved for the skunkier ones) this pheno has lighter, fluffier buds (still an indica, mind) and the subtlest aroma of the 3, too. The plant looks hazy in its branches and flowers and takes a little longer to start up but stragely it has taken its height from the Afghan side and not the Haze side at all. Possibly the nicest smoke - but who knows? Maybe one for head stash but this cross is about yield, isn't it? I'm ruling nothing out at this point.

NUTE REGIME - these plants don't like Nitrogen. Full stop. My mistake was thinking that I would try a Sativa-like regime where I give the plant all its nitrogen needs at the start of flowering but quickly tail off, knowing that the plant won't need any more. It is at the start of flowering when these girls are most at risk. I was using the schedule of a week behind and more or less halving the N but using molasses with the water cycle to increase the plants uptake of the [weaker] nutrients available. Wrong-o. Once I had done as Shanti suggested and completely cut out the N and the molasses the plants started to really take off, bud-wise. It seems that these girls want all of their nitrogen during veg (and even then, go real easy) and don't need a carb-boost. Shanti even suggested I lose the P and K for a while but I am using Light-Mix and the plants are tall so as a compromise I am using 1/4 strength of the usual regime and it seems to be going well.

The male balls never came back. I got exactly 3 male flowers from each of 6 of the 8 girls. Those girls on the CM side seemed most affected. This was no problem to deal with and I have seen no repeat at all. In fact I am over the moon with the way this grow is progressing. I am convinced the problem was environmental and not genetic.

I did take some photos but my camera is shit and so were my photos. sorry. I think I may invest in better hardware. (Any suggestions welcome. Macro shots a priority, obviously.)

Shanti gave me a no bullshit, absolute guarantee that neither parent of this cross is in any way prone to hermi-ing and I believe him. He did say that this cross doesn't like nutes and he meant that too! If you learn from my mistakes and follow the regime above you WON'T have any problems and will be growing the best commercial haze plants there are. You may have problems when your neighbours smell your beautiful flowers, though. Get a good carbon filter. :D

It is my view that, commercially, this could be a holy-grail cross. I did intend to keep the best from this pack but I think I may invest in 2 or 3 more packs and grow them all out as I think that this cross has the potential for something mind-blowingly special and I want to find it. I would also say that it, at this stage anyway, almost all of the plants seem worthwhile - unlike other varieties which take more selecting.

A real winner - and I am saving money on nutes, too.

PS bearing in mind Shanti is in on holiday, taking time out to give me advice is the sign of a top top bloke. How many other breeders do you know who would do that? It one more reason why you should buy Mr Nice.

Grover,
so Glad you are having success with these, and I'm finding your descriptions wonderfull:) I noticed two different phenos, in mine (will see em again on weds) fuity smell with dark green foliage, and a fruity; thin light green leaved peppery pheno, but no flowers showing after a week of 12/12.

So good of you to share the advice given to you by shanti, I'm very sure many people will use this knowledge.
as i grow mainly hydro i carry on veg food (High N) for a couple weeks in to flower usually, but now will prob switch to flower nutes a week or so before i flip to 12/12, thanks to this info.
good news on the cheap to run strain:D

Customer service like no other here.
anyone in business should take a leaf from shantis book..

Peace and weak nutes
Billy

Thanks for the heads up, Joe - how did you know I collect those type of books?

I've got loads of herbal remedy style books - but not that one! I'll check it out.:)

BL - thanks, dude. I'm gonna feed my ladies tonight and I am just deciding what to give them. At this stage I'm kinda making it up as I go along...

Instead of giving them what I decide and seeing how they react I am trying to give them what they tell me they need. It's hard!
Its like being proactive instead of reactive - except I can't speak plant and they can't speak english so it is a pain...

They don't seem to need any N so that's still out.....molasses is out too....but the flowers are starting to accelerate now so I may give them a slightly higher PK (maybe 1/3 to 1/2 strength) I'll let you know how they go...

One thing I have noticed is that the smells coming from the flowers seem much cleaner and more pungent than I expected, maybe it is the lack of N that is allowing that? What do you think?

I've also noticed that cleaning my camera lens seems to help with the photos...( :o )

Now it is just my skills holding me back (can't blame the tools anymore).....

Hi there grover sativa, thanks for that information very useful,i had a few mango hazes that herm up on me when i was feeding high level of n,i wonder if the n made them do that,
It 100%was not light leak and the cheese and rhino showed no signs of herm in the same room,
I'm going again this time i think i,ll use very little n at beggining in veg and stick to a light bloom through the grow i'll let you no how i get on,

Sticky nose

I must've just brushed the end of my nose against a bud when I was sniffin it today - cos now it is SO sticky! (No rude jokes, please) and this LOVELY smell is following me around. Mmmmmm

No more disasters, all the plants look great. These babies must be the most vigorous plants I've ever grown.

Nutes - they haven't had any N, alongside the Mango Haze [Grover's Cut]. Even the Mango is starting to say 'come on Groover - just a little hit of N, please' whereas the Criticals don't give a shit. They're still as green as - well - grass! They ARE sucking up water like nobody's business now, though. Not hungry at all but thirsty like horses!

All but one of them stinks (curiously.) The smell is between very fruity/orange-citric/icing sugar/slight skunk/very slight to slight white pepper. It is delightful. I can't describe how wonderful this aroma is.

The buds are tight and are already forming the colas (just). Thick fuzzy white stigmas; green to light green buds; dark green to green leaves.

Stature DEFINITELY tipping it's hat towards afghani side of the spectrum. Skunk side comes through in the shape of the buds (slightly bullet shaped). Only 1 plant with a hazey twist in its stature and leaf shape and colour but funnily enough it is the shortest! I think this may just be because it is the youngest, though... I will run it through again and find out in a few months time. Also, I thought it had the smallest buds but now I realise that it was just taking longer than it's sisters to flower...The stigmas are just a little bit less fuzzy than the others and the colour is slightly creamy instead of white....She's GOTTA be the hazey girl, surely? Of course this is the one which I called a little shitter runtling at the beginning of the grow...she has had no hermi problems, looks healthy as fuck, she stinks and she is a little belter. I bet she ends up as the keeper!!!!

It just goes to show you...rule nothing out.....grow the best ones twice - you may have missed a real corker first time around....;)

Hermie problems? what problems? even if I get no keepers at all, so long as I get a crop off the hazey girl the grow will have been worthwhile. If you could smell these buds you'd know what I meant...whatever happens I'm buying a couple more packets of these!

BTW

(If anyone has any idea about what might make a plant go hermie, now is the time to say  )

Grover

PS I've cut the dosage of those oxycodone pills down today - the pain is a little more but I feel human at least....:o I'm upping the dosage of hash - that'll take the edge off ;)

Problems? What problems?

Hello all,

Here's a quick update.
A) One problem has completely gone and the solution was easy.
B) Another has arisen and the solution is also instant.

A) First off and most importantly, no more hermie bananas at all. Of the 5 plants I selected to grow on, 2 have been totally problem free. These are the 2 longest flowering and least tight (though still pretty damn nug-worthy) in the buds, the haziest girls, if you will. 2 have only given me the most minor of problems, 2 'nanas each at the pre-flower stage and only 1 has really given me any real problems during the flowering period so far. The problems were never too severe, though, for a pair of tweezers and a quick scout each day.

Firstly, I cut out all the N, as Shanti suggested but still there were 1 or 2 'nanas appearing on this one girl. I eased back in the P and K but still a 'nana or 2 per day...
At this stage (after maybe two and a half weeks without N and 1 and a half without P or K) one of the other girls started to tell me she was hungry so I started up the nute regime again, going real easy on the N but still using it a little and giving pretty much normal levels of P, K and additives. That was about two weeks ago.

Still no real change in the 'nana production of this 1 girl (a huge, vigorous, heavy yielding stinker of a girl. Damn it - always the way!) so my conclusions were that it was NOT the nutes that caused this problem.

At that is no surprise - I think we would all know if Biobizz or Advanced Nutrients products caused our plants to hermie!

So it must be something else...but what?

When I first told Shanti of this problem I suggested 2 possible reasons but he asked me to change just 1 thing at a time, so that I would know which made the difference and which didn't. Good plan, so I went with possible reason no 1, the nutes or N or both. It wasn't that.

So now to try possible reason 2. I made the changes last Sunday afternoon (so just 5 days ago) whilst coming off the pain killers, so it gave me something positive to focus on and take the mind off things.

What do you know? It only went and worked. Twice. Not only did it take my mind off the shoulder for an afternoon but I haven't seen even 1 new 'nana on ANY plant since the next watering, which was Monday evening. So that's 3 days and absolutely no 'nanas at all. YEEEEEEEEEES

What was the problem then? My RO pre- and post-filters had not been changed for about 9 months (should be every 6 months) and worse still, the whole unit had been moved onto a window sill and therefore into the light. Some green algae-like gunk had growing in the housings and I reckon it was that which was poisoning the plants. I changed the pre-filters and the resin in the post filter and disinfected all of the housings as well as flushing the actual RO membrane and it really seems to have gone and done the job. the only thing that has appeared on my plants since I did this has been bud - and lots of it, which leads me onto the NEW problem....

B) The buds are growing so fast and so fat that they are weighing all of the branches down. I've had to tie them ALL up! Such amazing vigor.

It's a problem I want every time I grow. hehe
